Q: Tell us about your new release.
A: FALLEN FIVE is the third book in my The Lightkeepers series, continuing the story of Detective Micki Dare and her partner Zach Harris, as they battle dark forces at work in New Orleans. In this outing, a bizarre suicide leads the pair on a harrowing game of cat and mouse, where nothing is as it seems, and they’re forced to question everything—including their loyalty to each other.
Q: Without giving away any spoilers, give us a hint about a favorite scene.
A: There are so many moments in this book that are favorites! I think my most favorite scene is when Micki must confront her personal demons—which have come to call. For me it’s intriguing and creepy on several levels. We all have our personal demons, the ones that secretly torment us in the night; the scene poses a question to the reader—what would you do if your demons became a reality? Would they be able to destroy you?
Q: When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?
A: I wish I could say I always knew I wanted to write. But I can’t. I didn’t catch the writing bug until after I’d finished both a BFA and MFA in the visual arts. I’d secured my dream job—a university art instructor—when I came down with a really nasty summer cold. The drugstore cashier dropped a free Nora Roberts romance into my shopping bag. I’d never read romance, but I was hooked! I went into a romance reading frenzy, and during that frenzy, I decided I had to try to write one. The minute I put pen to paper, I knew I had found my true calling. I’ve never looked back!
Q: What is a typical writing day like?
A: For me, there’s no such thing as a “typical” writing day. Two days a week, I do a writing “boot camp” with friend and romantic comedy writer Haley North. My house one of the days, her’s the other. Sometimes I work at my favorite coffeeshop, and others times in my home office or on the porch. I even do a writing retreat a couple times a year—just me, my computer and Roxie, my wonder retriever.
Q: What has been one of the most surprising things you’ve learned as a published author?
A: Just how fun the writing process still is after all these years. Truthfully, the creative process still feels like magic sometimes. Conversely, I’m equally surprised by how difficult the process of birthing a book still is. You’d think after thirty-six books, I’d be able to pop stories out, no sweat. I suspect I can’t have one without the other, so I just try to be thankful with whatever the writing day brings.
Q: What writers or friends influenced you in helping you become an author?
A: Besides Nora’s brilliance, early on, writers Emilie Richards and Karen Young took me under their wings and taught me so much. Their friendship and belief in my writing meant everything to me.
Q: What does your family think of your career as an author?
A: They think it’s pretty cool. In fact, I have two sons and they’ve occasionally used my being a writer to help them get girls.
Q: Besides writing, what other interests do you have?
A: Art, movies, pilates, and of course, wine, chocolate and coffee.
Q: Can you tell us what’s next for you, writing wise?
A: Thanks for asking! I’m currently working on my next stand alone romantic thriller, tentatively titled DEAD INSTEAD. After that, book four of The Lightkeepers series, FOURTH HORSEMAN.
Q: How can readers connect with you online?
A: I love to connect with my readers! I’m very active on Facebook at Erica Spindler, Author; I’m also on Instagram, Pinterest, and Twitter. And please sign up for my newsletter at . You get all the info on what’s coming and where I’m going to be as well as cool, subscriber only contests. Thank you!
