Romantic Thriller/Suspense

St. Petersburg, Florida – The Present

After a horrible event, Macayla Burkett left her previous job, but now she has difficulty meeting her bills. In her new job, she works as an animal recovery specialist for former police officer Jefferina Franklin, who runs a private detective agency in the Tampa-St. Petersburg area. Only on this case, Mac, as she calls herself, is a detective searching for the whereabouts of three missing grey hounds stolen from the Derby Lane racetrack. It is a police case, so she cannot do anything other than look for clues. Her mission leads her into a dangerous situation.

Oliver Kelly, a transplanted Australian, goes ‘all Aussie’ in language when annoyed. His Australian shepherd companion, Jackeroo, is in reality a rescue dog. They both work for Bolt Action Rescue K-9 Services, or BARKS, as trainers of search and rescue teams for natural and man-made disasters worldwide. Oliver is in St. Petersburg Beach for a conference where he is a scheduled speaker; the very thought of it gives him the willies. He also plans to take advantage of the beach for stress relief from his job. On the return to his hotel after finishing his run on the beach, he passes a woman scrounging around a dumpster, looking for food. His initial reaction is doubt about a homeless person in this high end area, but he stops to help.

The scruffy looking woman is Mac, trying to rescue a Pomeranian. This encounter leads to a physical confrontation with two hooded figures taking baseball bats to Mac’s car. Interest sparks between Mac and Oliver. More trouble follows Mac, especially after Oliver leaves on a BARKS mission, increasing the suspense throughout the story. All three main characters, Mac, Oliver, and Jackeroo, are well developed. Mac is serious and avoids relationships. Oliver is humorous and avoids relationships. Jackeroo is a well-trained dog who likes to please. When I first started reading, I thought, ‘Pet detective? Really?’ but as author D.D. Ayers works her wonderful plot, I began to think that she planned that initial reaction and then used it to pull the reader ever deeper into the story. It worked; another great story for this series.

“I won’t hurt you, Sloan. I promise.”
There was no logical reason for her to trust him, but he’d been careful with her up to this point. Perhaps he’d be careful with her with what came next. She nodded mutely, watching as he rolled on a condom that he’d retrieved from his pocket. Her body hummed in anticipation and trepidation, but she didn’t let it show as he moved back to join her on the bed.
Jude palmed her between her legs, his big fingers exploring her. It didn’t seem possible that he could spark pleasure with a few specific touches, but it didn’t take much to have her relaxing, letting him once again take the lead. He kissed her neck. “Feels good, huh?”
“Well, I—oh.” Her eyes went wide when he pushed a second finger into her. It stretched her, the feeling not entirely pleasant at first, but he merely waited, pulsing the slightest bit, until pleasure took hold once more. She clutched his shoulders. “Kiss me again. Please.”
“You don’t have to ask twice.” He took her mouth like he owned it—like he owned every part of her. Jude slid between her legs, his body rubbing deliciously against hers. His hard length slid through her wetness, creating a friction that sparked a tide of desire deep inside her. Again? I couldn’t possibly…
He nipped her bottom lip and then soothed the slight ache with his tongue. “Ready?”
There was no mistaking his meaning. She nodded. Despite the earlier orgasm and how good it felt to have him moving against her, she was so incredibly empty. Instinct had her hooking a leg around his hips and arching up to meet him, needing more, so much more.
Jude reached between them, and then he was at her entrance. He kissed her, tongue twining with hers as he pushed into her, just a single inch. It was too much and not enough and she couldn’t help but thrash, pinned in place by his big body, overwhelmed by her helplessness and what he was doing to her. “Jude, I—”
“Shh. I’ve got you.” He rolled, taking her with him. One second she was on her back, finding it hard to breathe, and the next she was straddling him where he sat with his back against the headboard.
Sloan looked down, daunted by the sheer size of him. “I don’t know if this is going to work. You’re too big.”
He laughed, deep and full-throated, the sound rolling through her like the tide. “You can take every inch of me, sunshine. I promise you that.”

Praise for The O’Malleys Series

"It can be hard to make a ruthless assassin into a sympathetic character, but Robert handles the task with ease. She also deftly shows Sloan’s transformation from a pampered and protected naïf to a strong woman with a backbone of pure steel. A tension-filled plot full of deceit, betrayal, and sizzling love scenes will make it impossible for readers to set the book down."—Publishers Weekly on FORBIDDEN PROMISES

The Tate Brothers , Book 1
St. Martin's
ISBN: 978-1-250-12279-7
May 2017
Contemporary Romance

New York City – Present Day

When Navy SEAL Sullivan “Van” Tate's adoptive father, Noah, suddenly dies, he's left with the task of stabilizing his father's business empire, which includes bringing his adoptive sister, Chloe, to New York City. Chloe has lived in Wyoming her entire life, sheltered to the point of rarely leaving the family ranch. But it's up to Van to give the news to her that not only has she not been left anything, she isn't even Noah's daughter. Turns out that Chloe's real father is the unscrupulous billionaire rival who's been trying to take over their company.

Chloe looked up to the man she thought was her father, but he always disappointed her by making promises he never kept. She knew the reason she was kept guarded on the ranch was because of a concern that Noah's business rival would hurt her. Turns out this man was her father! Then there is Van. When Chloe was young, she had a crush on him, but he was older and never seemed to care about her. Now she's in New York, staying with him under his protection, and soon an attraction explodes between them. Van keeps his feelings for Chloe under control, but in bed he unlocks the uncontrollable passion that burns between them.

Van and his two adoptive brothers didn't get along with Noah, who sent all three boys to boarding school. As they matured to adults, each went into a branch of military service and avoided getting involved in Noah's company. Now they're forced by their late adoptive father's will to take control of the empire and fend off the vultures who want to take it over. Van hasn't seen Chloe in eight years, and the reason he's stayed away is because he considers himself flawed after losing a woman he was assigned to protect. His guilt over what happened has him feeling unworthy of any woman's love, and especially that of sweet, innocent Chloe. But as much as Van tries, he no longer can resist giving into the red-hot attraction for her.

When Chloe was a child, Noah gave her a snow globe depicting Rockefeller Center, and she's hung on and cherished it all this time, waiting for a chance to finally see New York City. Now she's in the big city, but Van won't let her outside to explore. After she inadvertently reveals where Van has her hidden, they are forced to move. But this only intensifies the sizzling attraction between them. The sex is torrid, but does Chloe want more from Van than this? Her real father is a danger hanging over them. Readers know it's only a matter of time in THE DANGEROUS BILLIONAIRE before Chloe and Van come face to face with him.

The first tale in The Tate Brothers series by Jackie Ashenden tells about the three men adopted by Noah Tate, and how each brother has been hardened by the life they've led. The military taught them well, and they don't want to give it up. In THE DANGEROUS BILLIONAIRE, Van may have to decide which is more important: the military or Chloe. Meanwhile, the danger for Chloe increases as her father makes his moves. Does this include claiming her as his daughter, or is she just a pawn in his nefarious plans?

The sexual chemistry between Chloe and Van is powerful, but their connection is even stronger. In THE DANGEROUS BILLIONAIRE, it takes nearly losing Chloe before Van realizes how much he needs her. A sensual tale that will have you on the edge of your seat, grab a copy and see what happens in THE DANGEROUS BILLIONAIRE.

Book Giveaway #1: THE BAD LUCK BRIDE by Janna MacGregor

THE BAD LUCK BRIDE – Janna MacGregor
The Cavensham Heiresses
St. Martin's Paperbacks
ISBN: 978-1-250-11612-3
May 2017
Historical Romance

England – 1811

Alexander Hallworth, Marquess of Pembrooke, is seeking revenge on his childhood friend, Lord Paul Barstowe. Alice, Alex's youngest sister, left a suicide note upon her death begging Alex not to blame Paul. So it stands to reason to Alex that it was because of Paul that Alice killed herself. It seems that Lord Paul has proposed to Lady Claire Cavensham, known to the ton as “cursed” because of the number of men who either died or broke off the engagement. Now, at a ball, word has it that Claire is being dumped once again. To Alex, who orchestrated much of Lord Paul's demise in Society, this is the opportunity to publicly humiliate his former friend by taking his betrothed as his wife.

Claire has had it with being humiliated at every turn. As she receives word of Lord Paul's note backing out of their engagement, the Marquess of Pembrooke comes to her rescue, or so it seems. She is hardly able to ignore a marriage proposal that seems timely to save her from more embarrassment, but she does wonder why a man of Pembrooke's reputation would suddenly want to marry her? Still, this may be her last chance to have the family she dearly wants. With the approval of her uncle and aunt, with whom she's lived with since her parents' deaths, Claire agrees to wed the very rich, very handsome marquess.

Neither Alex nor Claire assume anything in their new marriage – least of all love. They certainly seem compatible, and Claire is charmed by her husband's seemingly sincere caring. Claire is completely unaware of the reason Alex proposed. What will happen if she finds out?

THE BAD LUCK BRIDE is the debut novel for Ms. MacGregor, and it's a fabulous start. Well defined characters, a unique plot, and beautifully written, this is a sweet, sometimes poignant story of two people coming to terms with life. Claire is much tougher than Alex gives her credit for – she's been through a lot, and has her own secrets. And Alex learns more than one lesson about revenge and how it affects those around him.

A great beginning to a new series and a new author.

Promo and Book Giveaway: BEYOND REASON by KAT MARTIN

Tell us about Carly and Cain's book BEYOND REASON.

This book turned out to be one of my favorites.  But how could I not fall a little in love with Lincoln Cain, six foot five inches of powerful male who is also a mult-millionaire.  It takes a strong woman to handle Cain, a man who spent two years in prison before he turned his life around.  He’s tough, but so is she.  The book takes place in Texas, set around the trucking industry.  It’s fast-paced and hopefully a lot of fun to read.

What makes their story special to you?

X  I think because both of them were so strong.  Each could make it on his own--but together they were unstoppable.

What is a typical writing day like?

X  I am not an early riser.  I’m up at seven, coffee and watch the news, then head into my office.  I do email, a little PR, then start writing.  I write till five or six, then it’s time to unwind with a glass of white wine.

How much time does it take for you to research a book?

X  Some take more work than others.  For Beyond Reason, I visited a truck driving school.  The guys there had some great stories.  One of them made it into the book!!

Do you have an interesting writing quirk or habit?

X  I like quiet.  I don’t know if that is a quirk, but I love just being in the book.  I have great views out my windows, that an quiet is all I really  need.

What has been one of the most surprising things you've learned as a published author?

X  How difficult it is to break out.  I have written close to seventy novels.  I thought success would come much earlier and a whole lot easier.

Are you planning any book signings in the near future?

X  I’m not sure.  I may be at Book Expo in New York.    I don’t do a lot of signings anymore.  I‘m planning more travel for next year.

Besides writing, what other interests do you have?

X  I love traveling.  I would be in Europe every year if getting there wasn’t so hard.  Next year we are planning to go to Asia--Hong Kong and Tokyo.  It’s an area of the world we have never been.  When I’m in Montana, I love to set off in our trailer.  It’s a smaller one, so we get can out in the woods.  Wonderful to be out in nature.

Can you tell us about what's coming up next for you writing wise?

X  After Beyond Reason is Beyond Danger.  It’s Linc’s partner’s story.  Beau Reese is rich, handsome, black-haired, blue-eyed and flashy.  He was an amateur race car driver before he left the circuit.  He loves fast cars and fast women.   He is also wanted for murder.  The woman he turns to for help is lady detective, Cassidy Jones.  She’s smart and she’s no pushover, exactly the woman for Beau.
Third in the trilogy is Beyond Control, Linc’s brother, Joshua Cain’s story.  Josh is a former Marine special operations soldier who turns Texas rancher.

By Sharon Kendrick
Marry a sheikh in return for a hefty financial reward? Jane Smith, a shy researcher, normally would have laughed in Zayed Al Zawba’s handsome face. Except it’s only for six months and the money will rescue her sister, who’s caught up in debt.
Sheikh Zayed will do anything to inherit Kafalah’s neighboring oil-rich lands. Even if he has to wed plain Jane, though he’ll never long to consummate a marriage with her. But Zayed never imagined that Jane’s frumpy clothes were hiding such delicious curves, or that her quick mind and untouched beauty would tease and tempt him beyond his wildest imagination.

SHARON KENDRICK began telling stories at the age of 11 and never stopped. She enjoys writing fast-paced, feel-good romances, as well as music, books, cooking and eating. She lives in England with her two children.

By Sharon Kendrick

$5.25 U.S.; 224 pages

1)      What is your favorite part about writing The Sheikh’s Bought Wife?
I felt very fortunate with this particular story because it almost seemed to write itself.  Both characters came to me fully formed and were eager to tell their story.  I must add that this does not happen very often!

2)      What was challenging about writing this book?
The challenging part was in making an outrageous and misogynistic hero come good at the end.  Also, it was crucial to the story that Jane really did fall in love with Zayed, because he is the kind of man she despises.  But then she gets to know him…

3)      How would you describe the relationship between Zayed and Jane?
I would describe Zayed and Jane’s relationship as tempestuous.  He is a playboy and she is a prude.  He loves sex and she’s never had sex.  They are both distrustful around each other but then the layers begin to get peeled away and what you are left with is a red-hot love-affair which was never intended to happen.

4)      How did you come up with their names? Do they mean anything specific?
Character names are very important to me and this book was no different in that respect.  One of the meanings of Zayed is “in abundance” and I thought that was very appropriate because he certainly has lots of things in abundance….sex appeal, money & land, for starters.  The one things he’s never had is love.

Jane was chosen specifically because the heroine is plain – but of course, by the end of the book we discover that she is the most beautiful woman in the world in the eyes of her Sheikh!

5)      How long do you spend researching before beginning a book?
I sometimes spend weeks mulling over an idea and once it has grown I try to add to it.  I go and watch films and read books and magazines.  Whichever country I use (or invent) for the story, I then try to immerse myself in it.  Often, I use only a fraction of the things I’ve researched but the knowledge I’ve gained helps inform my writing.

6)      How long does it typically take for you to write a book?
I write four books for Harlequin every year, for the best-selling Presents imprint.

7)      If you didn’t write, what would you do for work?
I would be a potter!  I absolutely love working with clay.

8)      When did you first realize that you wanted to be writer?
When I was about seven years old my teachers always used to read my stories out loud.  I discovered that writing was the thing I was best at – and, even better – I loved it.  I still do.

9)      What is your favorite thing about writing romance?
I love creating characters and conflict and inventing a different world every time I write a book.  Bringing two warring lovers together for a dramatic and mutually satisfying ending to their story is a great feeling.

10)  What book are you currently reading right now?
I’m reading THIS MUST BE THE PLACE, by Maggie O’ Farrell – who is the most superb writer and comes from Ireland (where my mother was born).  I am also reading ITALIAN IN 30 DAYS, because I’m supposed to be learning the language at evening class.  I’m not very good but I try!

LUCAS by Delores Fossen
1)      What is your favorite part about writing LUCAS?
LUCAS is the 12th book in the Lawmen of Silver Creek series so I really enjoyed visiting with all the cowboy heroes from the previous stories. It was like going home to a family reunion.

2)      Is there anyone who you based Lucas and Hailey off of, or who you drew your inspiration from?
I was inspired by Rayland Givens from Justified. I thought he had that edge that I wanted Lucas to have.

3)      How many books have you written? Is there one that you would consider your favorite?
LUCAS is my 88th published Harlequin, and I’ve written 12 other books. It’s so hard to pick a favorite, but I think for now it’s BRANDED AS TROUBLE, an HQN that comes out July 1st.

4)      When did you first realize that you wanted to be a writer?
I’ve been writing as long as I can remember, but I didn’t begin writing seriously until my kids were old enough to start to school.

5)      What is your favorite thing about writing contemporary romance?
It’s fun to “build” the ranch where my cowboy heroes and heroines live. And, of course, the best part is creating happily-ever-afters for them.

6)      What is the biggest misconception about your genre?
That the books are easy to write and all the same. They’re very different, and they’re definitely not easy. It takes a lot of work to pull a story together.

7)      What are a few of your favorite books? Do you have any recommendations?
I have SO many favorite books and authors. I love B.J. Daniels, Julie Miller and Lori Wilde. I also read Stephen King and Dean Koontz.

8)      What are your future projects are you working on?
I’m working on three new HQN books for my Wrangler’s Creek series. They’ll be out in 2018.

9)      Do you have any tips for people suffering from writer’s block?
I think it helps to make a schedule and then stick to it. That way, I know what I’m supposed to be doing every day.

10)  Do you have any advice for new writers?
Write as much as you can and experiment with various ways to do the same scene. That’s how to learn the best way to tell the story.
