WEREWOLF IN LAS VEGAS – Vicki Lewis Thompson
Wild About You , Book 7
Signet Eclipse
ISBN: 978-0-451-41568-4
March 2014
Paranormal Romance

Present Day Las Vegas, Nevada

In all of humankind, very, very few are aware that werewolves live among them. In fact, they do, and Weres are among society's most wealthy and prominent members. The Landry pack of San Francisco is a good example. At the moment, the heir—and next Alpha—to the Landry empire is missing. His sister, the company's CFO, tracks him to Las Vegas where she plans to convince him to come home and settle down. Giselle is disturbed to learn that Bryce has been seen in the company of a human female, Cynthia Dalton, the sister of Luke Dalton. Luke just won a bar from the brother of the Cartwright pack leader in a poker game. Luke's father and the Cartwright pack's Alpha were once great friends, but then Angus Dalton won the neighboring casino hotel from Harrison Cartwright. A feud developed between the two families when Harrison stalled in turning the casino over to Angus. The hotel and bar were built especially to cater to Wares and extensive renovations were necessary before passing it to a human. During the negotiations, Angus died of a heart attack, and Luke blamed it on Cartwright. Now Harrison is also dead, and Luke has his revenge against the Cartwrights by winning the bar from Benedict, who inherited the bar from his father.

Some Weres believe it is time to let humans know about them and they even promote intermarrying. Giselle is definitely not one of those. Luke is not happy with his sister, either. Cynthia was a semester away from graduating with honors from Yale. Now that their father is dead, she wants to stay in Vegas and do what she's always wanted, to dance as a showgirl. Giselle and Luke meet and join forces to find Cynthia and Bryce. What follows is an entertaining chase where these two strangers are faced with riddles and jokes from their AWOL siblings. Luke's overly strong protective streak becomes evident to Giselle, who is strongly in favor of women making decisions for themselves. She's not afraid of voicing her opinion, either. With such different personalities, not to mention Giselle's attitude against humans and Weres mixing, she fights mightily against the physical attraction she feels for Luke. She even likes his smell, and that's with her superhuman werewolf senses.

Ms. Thompson has done it again, written movingly about a mismatched pair of potential lovers. And she does it with heart, humor, and sensuality. The previous books in the Wild About You series are set in Manhattan, the North Woods, Greenwich Village (an e-novella), Seattle, Denver, and Alaska. They are all tied together, but I can recommend each one (though I missed the novella) as a satisfying read.

Cairn, Australia - Present Day

Kat Jackson and Marco Corelli have been best friends for almost twenty years, there for each other through good and bad, but now that may change.  Ten weeks ago, they'd had a little too much to drink and ended up sleeping together, and now Kat is pregnant.  Thanks to the disease that killed her mother, Kat has never imagined having children, and now she's not sure what to do.  If she's a carrier of the same disease, does she really want to put a child through the same thing she experienced?  Add in that Marco's job keeps him out of Australia most of the time, and Kat has some pretty big decisions to make.

Marco is surprised to learn that he's going to be a father, but not entirely shocked by Kat's attitude.  He manages to get her to his island home before a cyclone hits, leaving them temporarily stranded and giving Marco the chance to convince Kat to marry him and raise the baby together.  He understands what is worrying her, but Marco is about to show Kat that he can be just as stubborn as she is.

Friends become lovers in SUDDENLY EXPECTING, but is there a chance for something more?  Their decades long friendship has seen them through the death of Kat's mother, her scandalous tabloid-fodder years, and a few marraiges and divorces - but a baby is a whole new story for both of them.  As they are stranded on the island, neither Kat nor Marco is able to ignore the desire that flares red-hot between them, but Kat isn't willing to risk their friendship, even for the best sex of her life.  While waiting out the storm as well as the results of the genetic tests to see if Kat carries the fatal disease that killed her mother, she is forced to look at her life and what she really wants.  Marco already knows what he wants, but convincing Kat to give them a chance will probably be one of the most difficult tasks he's undertaken.

With a few other surprises thrown in, SUDDENLY EXPECTING is an emotional, romantic tale.

A Perfect 10:

MONTANA BRIDE – Joan Johnston
A Bitter Creek Series #11, Mail Order Brides #3
A Perfect 10
ISBN: 978-0-345-52748-6
January 2014
Historical Western Romance

Montana Territory - 1875

After surviving the Great Chicago Fire of 1874, eighteen-year-old Miranda Wentworth left her three sisters in an orphanage while she traveled to Texas to become a mail order bride.  Miranda took along her brothers, Harry and Nick, and left behind: the twins, Hannah and Henrietta, and their youngest sister, Josie.  Miranda promised she would soon send for them, (TEXAS BRIDE, April 2012).  Months later, with no word from Miranda, the three remaining sisters escape from the orphanage and set out traveling West on a wagon train.  They are separated when Indians attack their wagon and take Josie prisoner, forcing Hannah to leave a wounded Henrietta behind to search for help. (WYOMING BRIDE, January 2013).
Karl Norwood is expecting an experienced widow and her children.  When they finally arrive, he sees a very young woman accompanied by two children who cannot possibly be hers.  Karl hates falsehoods, but he accepts Henrietta's story and sets about arranging their marriage.  Now that he has a ready-made family, Karl is anxious to bed his wife and create his own offspring.  His new bride is beautiful, and Karl feels blessed that this mail-order bride is easy on the eyes.

Henrietta, or Hetti, tries her best to warm up to her new husband.  He is definitely not the man she would have chosen as her husband; Karl is short and not handsome at all.  He doesn't stir her blood when she's near him, not the way his best friend, Dennis, does.  Alas, she made a bargain.  She has to protect the two orphaned children, Grace and Griffin, so marry Karl she must.  Hetti is lucky to be alive after Karl's Chinese assistant saved her from certain death by removing the arrow in her shoulder and nursing her back to health. And she feels responsible for the death of the children's mother, so the least she can do is take her place and marry Karl and see that they all stay together.

Henrietta becomes a mature young woman in the pages of MONTANA BRIDE.  Sometimes self-centered and spoiled, Hetti begins her journey to Karl's logging camp a very inexperienced young girl who quickly learns some very hard lessons.  Through the days and months that follow, Hetti sees that even though Karl is not as handsome as other men who have caught her fancy, he is truly a beautiful and caring person inside.

MONTANA BRIDE is the third book in the Mail Order Bride mini-series about the Wentworth children; and it is also the eleventh novel inside the Bitter Creek series.  Once again, Ms. Johnston has penned a wonderful story!  I have not found information on the next book in the series, which will surely be Josie's story.  Each of these books stands well alone, but you will not want to miss a single one of them.  Each book connects with the previous novels at the end of the story as we follow along with Pinkerton Detectives hired by Miranda, who are searching for her lost sisters.

MONTANA BRIDE is an especially heart-wrenching and romantic novel, with a bit of mystery too.  This book is no less than Perfect 10!  An unlikely hero and an even more unlikely heroine, Karl and Hetti bring us a one of the best stories of the year!

Do not miss MONTANA BRIDE or this series!

Europe and North Africa

Diana Morgan has been an Oxford philologist (one who studies languages) specializing in Greek mythology and the Amazons. She grew up with the knowledge drilled into her by her grandmother that the Amazons were not myth, but reality. Her love for her grandmother, who disappeared before Diana's parents could commit her to an asylum, remains deep in her heart. When a stranger offers her an opportunity to possibly reveal the true story of the Amazons to the world, the normally reasonable Diana jumps at the chance. Armed with a handwritten book that her grandmother left behind, and wearing the jackal bracelet mysteriously sent to her, she travels to North Africa where she is met by a scruffy Middle Easterner, Nick Barran. The secretive circumstances surrounding the archeological site is made all the more mysterious when Nick takes Diana's cell phone away, and he makes it abundantly clear that he doesn't want her there.

The newly discovered temple is deep underground, and Diana is fascinated to discover that because of her grandmother's notebook, she is able to translate the words written on the walls. She is also stunned to recognize a duplicate of her bracelet in the sarcophagus they open. But she finds herself in danger when she is in the temple alone, and it's only Nick's quick thinking that saves Diana before the entire site explodes. Diana is beginning to understand that someone, somewhere doesn't want her to discover the Amazons' story, or to find what some believe is a lost treasure given to the Amazons at the fall of Troy.

With the help of her childhood friend, who is an archeologist, and a reluctant Nick, Diana sets off for Turkey and then Greece to find more clues. But whom can she trust? Is Nick working for someone who doesn't want her to succeed? And why is someone back in England involved too? There are too many accidents, too many shadowy people for Diana to feel safe in her quest.

Every other chapter in THE LOST SISTERHOOD tells the story of Myrina, the first queen of the Amazons, and her own quest to find and rescue her sister and other women kidnapped by the Greeks from their North African homeland. Myrina learns how to fight, becomes a leader of the small band of women she takes with her, and eventually ends up in Troy, shortly before its fall. The historical detail and the incredibly brave women, in the past as well as the present, made for a terrific read. There is non-stop adventure for both Diana and Myrina. Each woman must learn whom to trust, and also how to use their physical and mental skills to protect themselves.

THE LOST SISTERHOOD is an impressive five hundred and seventy five pages long, but it was impossible to put down. Meticulous research, a delicious mystery, and characters that leaped from the story make this brilliant book a Perfect 10.

Book Giveaway ....

Never mix business with pleasure. Never bring politics into the bedroom. In a way I did both when I took Jackson Rutledge as a lover. I can't say I wasn't warned.

Two years later, he was back. Walking into a deal I'd worked hard to close. Under the tutelage of Lei Yeung, one of the sharpest businesswomen in New York, I had picked up a thing or two since Jax walked away. I wasn't the girl he once knew, but he hadn't changed. Unlike the last time we'd drifted into each other's lives, I knew exactly what I was dealing with... and how addictive his touch could be.

The inner circle of glamour, sex, and privilege was Jax's playground--but this time, I knew the rules of the game. In the cutthroat business world, one adage rules all: keep your enemies close and your ex-lovers closer...

A Perfect 10:

ONCE IN A LIFETIME – Jill Shalvis
A Perfect 10
A Lucky Harbor Novel
Grand Central
ISBN: 978-1-4555-2113-5
February 2014
Contemporary Romance

Lucky Harbor, Washington – Present Day

Aubrey Wellington grew up in Lucky Harbor and has been depicted as the beautiful but brainless female who always seems to get in trouble. It doesn't help that she was recently involved in a scandal that her now ex-boyfriend is touting in his self-published tome. But despite it all, Aubrey is determined to put the past behind and fulfill her lifelong dream of opening a bookstore/cafĂ© in an old building that needs lots of work. Her grandfather secretly hires Ben McDaniel to remodel the building to help her out; unaware that Aubrey has a secret that she's been keeping from Ben. Part of it is that she's attracted to Ben, but feels like he's off limits to her, especially since she played a part in something that affected him years ago.

Ben has been in a tailspin since his wife, Hannah, died, but after spending time away, he still comes back to Lucky Harbor to settle down. He's an engineer by trade, and has done work on the side to help people out, but he's decided not to return to this occupation. Ben and Aubrey have known each other since they were kids, but he always thought she was a bit of a stuck up beauty queen. He knows she's been through a lot lately but wonders how serious she is about changing her image. Ben spots a list of names on a piece of paper Aubrey has—one of which appears to be his—and wonders why he is on that list.

After accidentally stumbling into an AA meeting, Aubrey has a revelation that leads her to try to make amends to many of the people she's hurt throughout the years in ONCE IN A LIFETIME. She is especially ashamed of what she did to Ben, since it caused him to break up with his high school sweetheart, Hannah, for two years, though they did get back together. Aubrey is seen by many as a troublemaker who won't succeed, but she wants to change this with her new venture. My guess is that readers of ONCE IN A LIFETIME will swing back and forth as to how they feel about Aubrey at first, since she has a rich history of hurting people, but slowly they'll see that she is as much a victim as she is an instigator.

Ben has been pushing away family and friends who want him to get back into the swing of life by dating, and they mean well, but he still carries the memories of Hannah close to his heart. He has literally buried himself behind a wall of grief. Ben is a bit amused by Aubrey at first, mainly because she is trying to show she's turned over a new leaf and tries to not rely on people. The sexual chemistry sizzles between them, and for a man who is in mourning, the stirrings of desire for someone so different from Hannah puzzles Ben. Aubrey tries to fight the attraction, because she knows soon—very soon—she's going to have to come clean with him about the past.

ONCE IN A LIFETIME is part of the Lucky Harbor series, but this can work as a standalone if you're not caught up in the series. Her best friends, Leah (ALWAYS ON MY MIND) and Ali (IT HAD TO BE YOU), do make appearances, as do the two heroes from those book. Lucille is also back—as rascally as ever, but we get introduced to two little girls in foster care who are looking for a father. Is Ben father material?

Having read every book in the Lucky Harbor series, I can honestly say that ONCE IN A LIFETIME is now one of my favorites. From the first page all the way to the end, I couldn't put it down and is one of the reasons I am giving it one of RRT's Perfect 10's. Aubrey and Ben have their issues in the past that made it difficult for them to get together, but their connection just runs too deep to be ignored. Their tale is sensual and intensely emotional at times, but once they have found their way to each other in the end, it's a journey not soon to be forgotten. See for yourself and snatch up a copy of ONCE IN A LIFETIME.
