Women’s Historical Fiction

Massachusetts 1941~1964

When the U.S. enters the war in 1941, the world changes as the men go off to fight, and the women are left at home taking over the jobs the men leave behind. Couples are marrying quickly not knowing what the next day will bring. When Babe gets a letter from her boyfriend, Claude, asking her to marry him, she catches a train to the camp where he is stationed. The trains are bursting with servicemen, wives, and girl friends, mostly people who live in small towns and have never been away from home. Babe, an unsophisticated young woman, has a horrific experience while traveling. She blames herself, but is determined to move on. Babe and Claude marry, and she follows him from camp to camp until Claude leaves for England, and Babe returns home.

Babe is happy to get a job with Western Union in 1942. She receives the ticker tape, sets up the telegrams sent by the war department, and sees that they are delivered. She receives wonderful, loving letters from Claude and prays that he will be safe. Their friends, Millie and Pete, are also corresponding; Millie is due to have her baby any day while Pete is overseas. Another special couple is Gracie and Charlie who write about their little girl, Amy; they reminisce and enthusiastically plan for the future. Will these three men stay safe throughout the coming conflict?

In 1945, some men return home and others do not. They look older and feel different about their loved ones; they know the difference is mostly within themselves as they deal with the aftermath of war. The war widows suffer bereavement and loneliness, trying to put their lives back together.

Lunch counters, teletypewriters, and women taking the jobs previously held by men…war has come to the United States. NEXT TO LOVE is the story of three women who have known each since they were children. Will the men all come home, back to their wives who are waiting for them? They watch the mailbox for letters—the soldiers writing about their experiences overseas, and the women waiting and praying while writing about their everyday lives. Although the people deplore what happened to the Jews in Germany, there is still prejudice against Jews and Blacks in the small town. The story moves through the war and continues to relate how the three women and their families fare as the years roll by.

NEXT TO LOVE is a beautifully written, poignant novel as the world loses some of its innocence and lives are changed forever. It is a realistic, heartfelt tale of love and heartbreak, a story that readers won’t want to put down.

Dallas, Texas - Present Day

Bernadette Hogan is one tough lady. After years in the Army, she came home to take care of her mother who was showing early signs of dementia. Now, Bernie is a personal body guard for one of the richest men in the country, Jeremy Bridges. Bernie lives simply, saving every dime to finance her mother’s care. Her apartment isn’t the best place to live, but it’s cheap.

Jeremy Bridges is self-centered, handsome, and rich. He does what he pleases and never bats an eyelash at public opinion or comments, not even when he wears tennis shoes with his tuxedo and leaves his black tie deliberately untied. Jeremy does contribute heavily to many worthy causes, and he frequently has several women on his arm, but only the beautiful ones. Bernie tolerates Jeremy’s cavalier attitudes and protects him carefully. Always at his elbow, she makes sure no on can take him down. Usually she’s able to ignore his arrogance, but tonight, after a rush in the safe room inside Jeremy’s house, he pushes the envelope a little too far. Bernie has had all she can take of his uncaring demeanor, and she attacks him verbally, which leads to a lust-filled and passionate coupling, after which, Bernie quits his employ and walks out of his life for good.

BLACK TIES AND LULLABIES do not mix, unless you want to know the outcome of that night in the safe room. Yep, Bernie is pregnant, and Jeremy is the father. But that doesn’t matter to Bernie. The first thing she does is ask Jeremy to sign away his parental rights. He refuses. Now, Bernie is stuck in a dead-end assignment (pregnant ladies cannot be gun toting body guards) and Jeremy is a headache she has to contend with. Jeremy, on the other hand, is determined to be part of her life.

BLACK TIES AND LULLABIES is a story full of sparkling characters who bring life to an age-old tale. Bernie refuses to raise a child with Jeremy. His worldly ways are not a good example for her child. She wants nothing from him. Jeremy never expected to get married, let alone have children. It just wasn’t in his plans for his life. But now, faced with the real deal, he isn’t sure just what to do, so he attempts to boss Bernie around. Bernie gets lots of advice from the guys she works with, and she ignores her mother’s words of wisdom. All this makes for a good story, don’t miss it!

Seattle, Washington and Elsewhere - Present Day

What if you ignored the incessant ringing of your cell phone, only to discover that answering it literally meant life and death? This is the scenario for former combat engineer Tyler Locke and linguistics expert Stacy Benedict. Tyler is on the Seattle ferry, bound for Bremerton, when he finally answers his cell phone. The caller tells him he has a few short minutes to disarm a bomb or people aboard the ferry will die. Oh, and his father has been kidnapped! When Tyler finds the bomb hidden inside a van, he discovers that he can’t defuse it unless he can read Greek! The seconds tick away...

Meanwhile, Stacy Benedict has received a call on her cell phone from the same person, sending her to the same van aboard the ferry both she and Tyler are on. Stacy can read the Greek codes, but can she decipher them fast enough? So many people depend on them.

Criminal Jason Orr has been on a lifetime quest to find what he calls the Midas touch. He is convinced that a secret room he found once as a child holds the treasures of the real King Midas. Tyler thinks the man is crazy, but he has no choice. He must follow his instructions. Jason Orr is holding Tyler’s father and Stacy’s sister hostage. And he’s given Tyler and Stacy just five days to track down King Midas’s hidden gold. The only clue Tyler has to go on is an ancient manuscript written by the Greek inventor Archimedes, 2000 years ago. They race against the clock from Seattle to the Greek Islands, Italy, and finally back to New York in an explosive conclusion.

THE VAULT is a top notch and fast paced thriller full of twists and turns. There is tension and nerve wracking suspense as Tyler and Stacy race to beat Jason Orr’s clock. Secondary characters include Grant, Tyler’s co-worker and best friend, and the deadly Gia, the only other person who’s seen the gold.

This book will hold you hostage and give you a wild ride!

Paranormal Romance

Druida City, Celta - 421 Years After Colonization

Laev T’Hawthorn made a terrible mistake as a young man and he’s still paying for it. He married a woman whom he thought was his HeartMate, but she was far from it. Nivea enjoyed all of the perks that come with marriage to a high noble, but had no interest in being loyal, or faithful. When she died along with others in the city after a plague hit, Laev was left with a broken heart and the realization that Nivea had not only stolen from his Residence, but had hidden or sold his HeartGift to her. Knowing that he has a true HeartMate somewhere, Laev is, however, not interested in finding her, or remarrying.

Camellia Darjeeling has picked herself up by her bootstraps after being deserted by her family at a young age. Opening up her second tea shop in the city, Camellia wants to stay independent, and isn’t interested in finding her HeartMate, even though she is aware who he is. Men have always hurt her in one way or the other, and she’s not going to allow pain to interfere in her existence any longer. She has her close friends, and her new Fam, Mica, and the success of her tea shops to keep her content. When her father and uncle storm back into her life, extorting money from her and destroying valuables in her house, Camellia is even more determined not to trust another man.

Life has a way of getting complicated, and for both Laev and Camellia it draws them together, whether they like it or not. Camellia’s father and uncle have been implicated in the theft of Laev’s Residence’s belongings, including some gifts he’d given his late wife. The tentative friendship that blossoms between Camellia and Laev soon becomes more than that, despite both of them trying to keep the other at arm’s length. But threats against Camellia and secrets both are trying to keep start to get in the way.

The Celta novels are so much fun to read, I really look forward to each one. The Fams, mostly cats, can talk telepathically with their owners, and they bring plenty of humor to the stories. HEART SEARCH is intense, romantic, and, at times, heart wrenching as both Laev and Camellia try to sort through their feelings for each other, and deal with their pasts. There are plenty of other characters from the previous novels to help with this romance, and the exciting conclusion will have readers on the edge of their seats.

HEART SEARCH is another terrific tale from the brilliant mind of Robin D. Owens. Don’t miss it. And do check out her website for the previous books: .

Fool’s Gold, California – Present Day

Finn Andersson comes to Fool’s Gold looking for his twin brothers, Sasha and Stephen. They have only a few months until they graduate from college, but they left Alaska for California to try out for a reality show, much to Finn’s consternation. Dakota Hendrix finds Finn extremely rude but defuses the situation with friendliness. Dakota advises him to allow his brothers to make the decision and not try to drag them home. After all, they are of age and the show only lasts ten weeks.

Twenty people, sorted into ten couples, are chosen to be part of the reality show in Fool’s Gold. They are sent on romantic dates, and every week one couple is voted off of the show. The last couple wins $250,000.00 plus a wedding if they are so inclined. Dakota, a child psychologist, is given the responsibility by the mayor for protecting the citizens of Fool’s Gold from any Hollywood craziness. It is a town with many women and few men.

Sasha has dreams of stardom, but Stephen wants to find his own dream. Both are determined to not return to the small town in Alaska. Finn wants them to finish college, but when they refuse to leave, he takes a job as a pilot for the show so that he can keep an eye on his brothers.

Dakota is one of identical triplets. Because of a medical condition, she is told she will probably never be able to have children; she decides to adopt a child from Kazakhstan. She and Finn become friends, as she constantly helps tamp down his concerns for his brothers. Although she and Finn are attracted to each other, his worry for his brothers trumps any flirtation. But can they resist each other?

Aurelia lives in town and has signed up for the reality show. She has a difficult time standing up to her mother who complains incessantly, never satisfied with her daughter. Will she be chosen as one of the contestants?

Especially striking is the wonderful dialogue in ONLY MINE. The conversation of the characters sparkles. It is funny and realistic, and the characters are very likeable, making readers want to know more about them. They have their problems to contend with, but manage to keep their lives interesting and fun. The romance is steamy and the storyline intriguing. Finn is not interested in a lasting relationship; he has every intention of returning to Alaska, so Dakota must guard her heart. ONLY MINE is a story of choices for all three men.

ONLY MINE, the fourth book in the Fool’s Gold series, is another winner for this author.

The Ghetto - Present Day

Ember is a good little fairy. She does what the big bad boyfriend/gang boss says because it is better for her that way. Even when that means whoring out her intoxicating blood to vampires. Fortunately, she meets a man who can help her keep her blood where it belongs…in her body. Unfortunately, that fairy is her boss's boss and one of the toughest of the roughest.

Diamond wants one thing, to kill the SOB that took his girlfriend from him and turned her into a vampire. When he meets Ember, he knows she is just what he needs. Diamond is Ember's chance at survival, but a surprise is waiting for both of them at the end of their journey. They are falling in love with each other.

Thrilling and gripping, BLOOD CURSED is very original. Vampires and fairies? Mob and gang bosses? Magical drugs and soul stones? Who would have thought to put all that together? Good for Erica Hayes, because it works quite well. The story flows at a nice strong pace. It is quite captivating from page one.

Ember needs to grow up and grow a backbone. Throughout over half of the novel she is complaining about her situation of being under controlling men, but when the opportunity arises, she will never defend herself or stand up to them. Poor pitiful Ember, she cannot fight her own battles as readers see very early on. Diamond is a more interesting and developed character; however, his dialect, although meant to be cute and add spunk, is just distracting and aggravating. At one point he says, "Chillify, mate. Didn't do nothing. Set her straight. She's just sparkle****ed, or something." I had to go and look at other comments to make sure I had not received a typo copy.

All in all, the idea of vampire and fairy monsters is highly original and entertaining. I have not read others in the series so I cannot speak for those characters, but these didn't do it for me. I hope the next in the series will have a new set of characters and take on a bit more of a serious note.

Book Giveaway: A BAD DAY'S WORK

Title:  A Bad Day's Work: A Novel (A Lilly Hawkins Mystery)
Author: Nora McFarland
Publisher: Touchstone
August 2010

About the book:

For fans of Lisa Lutz and Janet Evanovich, the debut in a new series, A Bad Day’s Work is a fast-paced and funny mystery starring a wonderfully flawed TV camerawoman named Lilly who is caught at the right place but definitely the wrong time.

Nothing seems to be going Lilly’s way. A TV news photographer at her hometown television station, she’s one of the hardest working “shooters” there, but her pit-bull personality and a series of unlucky blunders have put her job in jeopardy.

So when an urgent story breaks in the middle of the night, Lilly is determined to turn her bad luck around and get the respect she deserves. But the pressure is on—either she delivers amazing video—or she’s fired. After busting her butt and dodging the cops, Lilly has what could be the biggest scoop of her career—exclusive video of a murder scene. Or does she have it? Lilly is stunned when the tape played in front of the entire newsroom is nothing but dead air.

Soon she’s on the run from criminals and police, both of whom claim Lilly’s video is the key to solving the murder and think she pocketed the real tape. Can she escape her pursuers long enough to catch the killer, or will she end the day as the next victim?

Lilly’s bad day just keeps getting worse, but the one thing she knows for sure is that she’d like to live to see more of them . . .

The author has generously donated to Romance Reviews Today a few copies of her book, so we are giving one away here on the blog. To learn more about Nora, visit her website at

SHADOW WALKER by Allyson James

SHADOW WALKER - Allyson James
Stormwalker, Book 3
Berkley Sensation
ISBN: 978-0-425-24182-0
June 2011
Paranormal Romance

Arizona and the South Pacific - Present Day

When a huge sinkhole opens up underneath Janet Begay (a Stormwalker who also wields Beneath magic) and Sheriff Nash Jones, it’s just the beginning of a whole slew of trouble. There are creepy magical hands in the hole that seem to want to hurt Janet. A bunch of unexplained and undoubtedly malicious damage to Janet’s hotel has occurred, and a new county inspector with a really bad attitude who wants to shut her business down shows up (suspicious timing anyone?). Worst of all, her boyfriend, Mick (a dragon) has been seen meeting a frail blonde in out of the way places. Janet is sure she that with the help of her friends and allies she can rescue her hotel, but the blonde is a whole other thing. Cheating isn’t an option as she knows Mick loves her and he’s proven it again and again. So, that means the blonde is up to no good. It looks as if it’s up to Janet to prove that her love is just as true and she’ll do whatever it takes to rescue her dragon in distress.

SHADOW WALKER brings readers back into the always amazing world inhabited by spirited Janet and her fiery lover Mick. Janet has grown a lot through this series and, although she’s just as different and dangerous as her grandmother always suspected, she’s definitely the kind of woman you’d be proud to stand beside. Still a bit gun shy about admitting how deep her feeling sometimes run, she’s about to face the most important fight of her life in this book…saving the man/dragon meant for only her. Mick is every woman’s dream; sexy, tender, brave and bold, he’s Janet’s perfect match. Even their magic combines in wonderful ways. He’s definitely not the sort to give up without a fight and, together with Janet, he seems certain to win this battle.

The Stormwalker series is populated by a diverse and fascinating cast of characters. Some of them are: Sheriff Nash Jones (a magic void, he’s Janet’s friend/enemy, still not really sure), Maya Medina (Janet’s electrician and Nash’s lover), Cassandra (Janet’s Wiccan hotel manager) and her lover Pamela (a wolf Changer), Fremont Hansen (Janet’s plumber), Elena (Janet’s scary, but excellent cook), Jamison Kee (a puma Changer and Janet’s friend), and of course, Janet’s grandmother Ruby (she thinks Firewalkers are generally no good, but likes Mick anyway). Oh yeah, Janet’s sister, the powerful and probably evil Gabrielle, is back in town, and the mysterious god Coyote is around from time to time as well. New to the scene are Ted Wingate (the county inspector with wandering hands and malicious intent) and the mysterious blonde (trust me, she’s evil). It may seem like a large cast but the reader is never confused, and all of them are integral to the story in their own way.

Full of mystery, action, passion, characters you’re sure to adore, and above all else, great storytelling, this is a fabulous read, one you’d be a fool to miss. Then again, I feel like that about all of Allyson James’s books. When God was passing out talent, He must have given her an extra helping. So, looking for your next favorite book? Get a copy today of SHADOW WALKER, it’s certain to fit the bill.

Paranormal Romance

Massachusetts, Michigan, Louisiana, Maine, and Georgia - Present Day

Corinne Bishop was born a Breedmate (intended mate for a Breed male, aka a vampire) and adopted by a Darkhaven family she treasured. Then at only eighteen, she was kidnapped and spent the next seventy five plus years being tortured by Dragos (a Breed intent on ruling everyone, Breed and human alike). Recently rescued by the Order (a Breed league based on justice and action) Corinne has only one purpose in life now, to get back the best part of her life, the piece Dragos still holds.

Hunter was once one of Dragos’s most deadly assassins. But he found a new reality when he was taken in by the Order. His only purpose now is to destroy Dragos and his entire organization. However, when he’s given the task of escorting Corinne back to her family, he discovers there just might be something, or rather, someone, more important to him.

Can a Breed warrior who denies all emotion and a woman who is full of them fight their pasts and come together to embrace a future? It’s possible, but first they’re going to have to try to bring down the darkness hovering over everyone—Dragos.

The evil that Hunter and Corinne have suffered in their lives is DEEPER THAN MIDNIGHT. Hunter was bred and raised by Dragos with only one mission, to be the best killer possible. Emotions, physical touch, any weakness, was burned out of him. However, Corinne manages to touch a sheltered spot in his soul, one that still hungers for those things and will do anything to get them. Corinne was once a joyous young lady looking forward to a bright future. Amazingly, she survived the past decades of torture and still came out with the capacity to both enjoy life and embrace the possibility of love. Both of these characters are strong in their own ways, and when they come together it isn’t just about passion (though trust me; they’ve got that in spades). They’ve got the potential to be a couple destined to help bring about change and make the world safe from those who would see it ruined.

Readers of the series will be happy to see many of the secondary characters who’ve featured in previous Breed novels are back for more in this one (see for a complete listing). Lucan (Order’s leader) and Gabrielle (his mate), Sterling (an Order member once with the Enforcement Agency, a Breed group more concerned with politics and empire-building), Tegan (a founding member of the Order) and Elise (his mate, once mated to Sterling’s brother) are among those back in action. Lazaro and Kellan Archer are members of a Darkhaven family nearly destroyed by Dragos and they would love to see him permanently put out of commission. Victor and Regina Bishop are Corinne’s adoptive parents; their reaction to her reappearance is both startling and heartwarming. Taggart, Murdock and Mathias are members of the EA; unfortunately, only one of them could make the grade as a good guy. Dragos is a determined man, certain at this point, that not even the Order can stop his plans. Unfortunately, he may be right. All of these characters (along with many more) contribute greatly to the story and are certain to leave you eager to learn more about them in future books.

Lara Adrian has an undeniable talent for creating books that leave you at times angry, frustrated, happy, and breathless. In case you weren’t sure, that’s a compliment. ;-) Intricate plotlines, intense and fully developed characters, and under them all a vivid sense of place combine to make her books some of the best around. DEEPER THAN MIDNIGHT takes its place as the finest yet. Of course, I think that at the end of each of them. Don’t miss this fantastic tale, and keep an eye out for the next in the series that will feature Sterling.

WEDDING MAGIC by Patricia Coughlin

WEDDING MAGIC – Patricia Coughlin

ISBN: 978-0-425-24123-3
August 2011
Paranormal Romance

Rhode Island – Present Day

Wedding planner Sophie Bennett’s life is all about weddings and happily-ever-afters with the family business, Seasons, providing the show. Unfortunately, her own life doesn’t currently include a Prince Charming. When one of the potential clients wants to be married at a local oceanfront mansion, Sophie knows that if they land this account, it will provide a big boost to their business. However, there’s one possible hitch in the plan: the mansion is currently owned and occupied by a reclusive author named Owen Winters who makes it clear from the first moment Sophie approaches him that he’s not interested. Nor is the ghost who inhabits the mansion…

Many years ago, Ivy Halliday, the late resident of the mansion affectionately referred to as the Princess House, was engaged to marry the love of her life, but the groom failed to show up for the wedding. Her heartbreak echoes throughout the house as a ghost, and Ivy is firm that no wedding will take place in her home. But Sophie is one determined woman, and when Owen abruptly changes his mind to let the wedding take place there, her victory is short lived. First she has to agree to Owen’s demands, including the stipulation that Sophie move into the mansion during the wedding preparations. Then Sophie has to contend with one irritated ghost. But when there is a will, there is a way.

Owen may be a wealthy and successful author, but his real life is steeped in tragedy. His only child was killed in a car accident, and Owen feels guilt for not always being there for his daughter. Owen is against the interruption the wedding would provide, yet something about Sophie brings out the “yes” in him. Living in close quarters with her will surely bring him out of his shell. Of course, if they didn’t have to deal with an ornery ghost, things would go a lot smoother.

With WEDDING MAGIC, Patricia Coughlin has penned a tale that runs the gamut from funny to serious. In between, you’ll grab a hanky as Owen and Sophie fall in love. Owen thought the strange activities in the house were coincidences until Ivy materialized in front of him, all pissed off at him because he was occupying her house. With Sophie temporarily living with him, he begins to slowly open up and explore the uniqueness of sharing a life with someone, albeit a relationship that starts out platonic. For Sophie, she has her own demons to face, notably getting past being jilted by her ex-fiancé and being left feeling she doesn’t deserve her own happiness. Then there is the Cinderella likeness of the WEDDING MAGIC—two older step sisters (whom Sophie nicknames the J’s) and her being pushed aside to do the mundane tasks while they bask in the glory and fame while running Seasons. Is there a bit of fairy tale magic at work? Or is fate ensuring that Sophie will be the one who wins Owen’s trust and love?

A very likeable, contemporary romance with a splash of paranormal, WEDDING MAGIC is one of those reads you can’t go wrong with if you want something that leaves you feeling good. I’ve never read Ms. Coughlin before, but after reading WEDDING MAGIC, I’ll be sure to check out her backlist.

BLOOD HUNT by Shannon K. Butcher

BLOOD HUNT - Shannon K. Butcher
The Sentinel Wars, Book 5
ISBN: 978-0-451-23429-2
August 2011
Urban Fantasy

Kansas City - The Present

Three races from the ancient past, the Theronai, The Sanguinar, and the Slayers, form the Sentinels and fight the demonic, and just as ancient, Synestryn. The Sanguinar, as their name suggests, drink blood and are hunting for humans whose blood is powerful enough to rebuild Sanguinar strength.

The Sanguinar Logan is tired and weak, but he battles a Synestryn demon to save a couple who will breed children destined to feed the Sanguinar and help save their dying race. The Theronai have a program of pairing people with certain qualities that will help rebuild all the Sentinel races. During this deadly battle, Logan finds a woman whose blood instantly restores his strength, stronger than it has been in many years. He knows he can never have her, for he must give her over to the breeding program.

Hope has lived ten years without any memory of the time before she appeared. While she helps the homeless at a local shelter, she also constantly searches for her lost memories. As she tries to help a weak, and she believes dying, Logan after watching him battle an unbelievable creature, he grabs her and sucks blood from her neck. She finds this the ultimate of sensual experiences. While she is attracted to Logan, she also is wary.

Hope's blood has also attracted a very evil Synestryn who has decided that she is his possession and her blood his.

BLOOD HUNT is an action packed thrill ride. Either Logan is saving Hope, or Hope is saving Logan while they are trying to avoid each other's attraction. Quite a few side stories and characters thread through Hope and Logan's story, sometimes usurping their drama. These threads come from earlier books in the series, so while a reader can follow the plot of BLOOD HUNT, they will probably want to begin with the previous stories: BURNING ALIVE, FINDING THE LOST, RUNNING SCARED, and LIVING NIGHTMARE. All the stories share a vivid and convoluted story line, a rich and intriguing setting, and very passionate, desperate, and driven characters. Fans will love this new story.

Back on dry land Tracy sees Wanda who guesses her condition. Even though she is the landlord of five run-down beach cottages, Tracy has landed herself the best friend ever. Wanda, the smart mouth waitress, is now a trendy pie-shop owner. Janya, once a lonely young wife, finds her arranged marriage is working. Alice, a frail widow, is now raising her granddaughter, Olivia, who is on the verge on becoming a teen. Maggie, Wanda’s daughter, has joined the group. The ex-cop is reeling from betrayal at work and her ex-lover. The welcome that is extended to Maggie means a lot to her. Somehow this eccentric group of women have really made Happiness Key just that.

As the storm season approaches, Tracy is not the only one with a problem. Janya and her husband, Rishi, find themselves in the middle of a mystery. New friend, Harit Dutra, asks to leave his two small children, Vijay and Lily, in their care while he searches for his missing wife. He goes missing, too, and the whole community is horrified when both are found dead in a run-down-seedy motel. Since there are no relatives to claim the children, Janya and Rishi find themselves instant parents. Maggie steps into help and puts her life in danger. She starts asking questions, and the answers are making somebody nervous. With a deadly storm approaching fast, everyone must get to higher ground. Some won’t make it. Is this the end to Happiness Key?

Emilie Richards has penned a winner. The story is well written, and the ladies with all their eccentricities make the story vibrant and endearing. Suspense is woven through the plot as the story plays out. Enjoy this hot summer read; it sizzles.

Q & A with Jayne Fresina...and a giveaway!

1. Tell us about your newest release.

SEDUCING THE BEAST is an Elizabethan version of “Beauty and the Beast”. It’s a light-hearted romance of mistaken identities and about two stubborn people learning to cross the class divide. I think it’s a great love story. I had a lot of fun writing it.

2. Can you tell us a little about your favorite scene in the story?

It’s difficult to choose just one! I would have to say the point where Maddie (the heroine) finally manages to pierce the Beast’s hardened heart and makes him realize that he’s fallen for her. I won’t give too much away, but there is a small food fight involved, followed by a steamy love scene. Poor Maddie has been trying so hard, up to that point, to get through his arrogant mask. Finally the balance shifts in her favor.

3. When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

I’ve always loved books and stories. I started writing them in my head when I was quite young, but I kept them to myself. I’m not sure I thought of becoming a published writer though until much later. I thought I was going to be a ballerina, then an actress! Becoming a writer wasn’t something I imagined until I was an adult and finally plucked up the courage to let someone read one of my stories.

4. Where do you get ideas for your stories?

Most of the time it just comes to me out of the blue. I could get inspired by a song, or something I’ve just watched on TV or read in a magazine. At night, I scribble ideas in a notebook by my bed – often characters will come first and I might write out a few scenes of dialogue before I actually build the story.

5. What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?

I write very early in the morning, but I always have to brush my teeth before I write. I might not shower until later in the day (I’m fortunate in that I get to work from home at my “real” job too), but I ALWAYS brush my teeth before I sit at the computer.

6. What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your books?

I’m constantly surprised whenever someone bothers to let me know how much they enjoyed my books. Complete strangers. I’m also shocked that I ever got up the courage to let strangers read my work! Never thought I would do that. Now, when they love it as much as I do, it’s a real thrill.

Another thing that has surprised me is the way ideas continue to flow for me. As soon as I’m done with one manuscript, I think I’m going to take a break, but then I can’t do it. The minute I sit down at the computer and open a new document, I’m off! If I can’t get to a computer I’m fidgety and restless. I wonder why and how my mind works this way. How does my head – which is not particularly clever - come up with these stories?? I can’t imagine what it must be like not to have ideas constantly crowding in, characters chattering away in your head all day. I’ve concluded it’s a kind of subtle madness.

7. What authors or friends influenced you in helping you become a writer?

My family has definitely influenced me more than anything. I believe I inherited my love of stories from my father. Growing up, he frequently entertained us with tales of his childhood in the country and his early years as a young firefighter. He had a talent for putting the pictures clearly in your head, even though you’d never met the people he was talking about. For a long time we tried to get him to write his stories down and finally, in his eighties, he sat down and started writing his memoirs. I’d love to see them in print one day. My sisters were eager readers and I picked up that habit from them. One of my sisters used to read “Agatha Christie” mysteries to me when I was sick in bed with mumps and then measles. Once I started writing, I got a few brave friends to read and review my work. The encouragement they gave me was invaluable too. I’m not sure that any one writer influenced me. I had some excellent English Literature teachers at school who nurtured my love of the classics – Chaucer, Shakespeare, Austen, Bronte, Hardy….etc.

8. What does your family think about your career as a published author?

They are very supportive, although I think they’re amused by it. I know my sisters have a hard time reading some of the racier scenes, knowing their little sister wrote them! I do try to warn them. I think they would rather I was writing children’s books!

9. Besides writing, what other interests do you have?

I draw and paint, although I haven’t done any for a while – since the writing took off, I’ve been too busy with that. I used to get into the painting whenever I was taking a break from writing. I also like to cook, but I’m not very good. I have a hard time following a recipe and usually decide to start adding other ingredients. I made a vegetarian curry once for my mother-in-law, Kathy, and I don’t think she ever recovered.

10. Can you tell us about what’s coming up next for you writing wise?

After SEDUCING THE BEAST I have the follow-up coming out from Lyrical Press – ONCE A ROGUE – which is the story of Maddie’s little brother. I’m also working on the third book in that series, THE SAVAGE AND THE STIFF UPPER LIP, which is Maddie’s daughter’s story. That should be completed soon. I have a print version of my PRIVATE COLLECTION trilogy coming out from Evernight Publishing later this year. In spring 2012, my first Regency romance A FALLEN WOMAN will be released by Sourcebooks and I’m also currently working on the sequel to that. Lots going on!

11. How can readers connect with you online?

My website is and readers can contact me through that. I also have a Facebook author page at:!/pages/Jayne-Fresina/137708499635497

Thanks for the interview!

Some men are born to make dynasties and some women are born to make trouble.

Hellbent on arranging a pardon for her exiled cousin, Madolyn Carver will stop at nothing to achieve her aim, even if it means seducing the mysterious Earl of Swafford. So what if he's known as "The Beast" and is immensely powerful? Plucky Maddie isn't frightened off easily.

Returned home after too long abroad, The Beast also has a mission. He must remove his younger brother and heir to the vast Swafford estate from the clutches of a most unsuitable woman. When a misunderstanding leads him to mistake Maddie for his brother's cunning mistress, he takes her captive under the guise of The Beast's manservant. Now she can longer be a threat to his misguided brother's future, or so he thinks. And surely, The Beast's infamous iron will can resist the charms of one particularly disobedient, witty, intriguingly stubborn young woman.

But there is a far greater danger. A deadly assassin has come to the Swafford estate, and The Beast's fear of falling in love might just be his downfall. Maddie, the woman he won't trust, is the one innocent soul who can save his life--and his heart.

Hot August Nights

After a rather cool spring here that lingered into the summer, it's finally gotten hot. I don't know about most people, but when it's hot out, it's almost perfect to stay inside where it's cool and read. It's too hot to do much outdoors when the weather is inching toward 100 degrees. I can remember growing up we'd go to movies in the evening and aftewards hit the drive innfor ice cream. Ahh...the good old days!

I just recently finished reading Carly Phillips' SERENDIPITY for review and really enjoyed it. Another of my favorite reads this summer was HEAT WAVES by Susan Lyons. And for quick and fun reads, there's always the Harlequin Desires. Rarely do I find a dud in them. I read a lot, mostly for review, but sometimes they tend to blend together. Yet, when I see the blurb, I remember them and some of my favorite scenes.

So, now you know what I've been reading, tell us about yours. What are you reading...have read...or plan to read soon?

Q & A Dianne Venetta and a giveaway!

1. Tell us about your newest release.

Jennifer's Garden is my debut novel which epitomizes the showdown between a career woman's criteria for the perfect husband and what true love means.

In a race against time, cardiologist Jennifer Hamilton is caught between her mother's dying wish and taking the risk of a lifetime with Jackson Montgomery. He's the man hired to complete the landscaping for her new home; the venue for her upcoming wedding. Jackson's everything she never wanted in a man, but as the job progresses, his lure pulls strong. It's an attraction she cannot deny.

And one that puts her career on the line. Jennifer has some decisions to make, choices that pull her in opposite directions. Her best friend Samantha Rawlings is pulling her toward new horizons yet her traditional mindset resists. And then there's Jackson.

Personally, I'd follow him anywhere. 

2. Can you tell us a little about your favorite scene in the story?

For me it has to be when Jennifer's mother Beatrice visits the garden. It's a tense moment for Jennifer because this was supposed to be the setting for her wedding, but instead, opened the bloom of a new relationship. While her mother knows she has feelings for Jackson, he doesn't and Jennifer's not sure she's ever going to tell him.

But what happens during this scene changes everything. It's beautiful, touching and will make you want your very own Jackson Montgomery.

3. When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

Years ago the inspiration struck. It was quite unexpected but very insistent. Like every other devoted romance reader, I was consuming books at alarming rates and one day, a story popped into my head and demanded to be written. It was just that simple! And I, being the dutiful-devoted-lover-of-all-books had to comply.

While my debut novel is not the book of this first inspiration, I do hope to publish the original story one day. It's about the mother-daughter relationship and how we must first learn to accept ourselves and our choices before we can begin to accept another's.

4. Where do you get your information or ideas for your stories?

It's definitely true that writers write what they know. At least they start out that way. Who knows where I'll go next but Jennifer's Garden is set in South Miami, home to my childhood. I chose this venue because of the flair and flavor of this tropical city and the fact that my novel centers on an outdoor wedding. An easy fit, right?

The second in this series will be released in October and features South Beach and the city downtown.

5. What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?

Well this question gave me pause. Would this be my tendency to ignore the laundry machine as it bangs against my office wall during its spin cycle? Or do you mean more along the lines of what odd habits do I have? I guess I would say it's my need to have two computers and three piles going at all times. I'm very visual and if I have a question about some detail in my story, I want to research it right then—without losing sight of my story page.

As to piles, I'm a plotter and have everything organized according to scene. Sex scene, work scene, emotional scene, love scene (yes, not all my sex scenes are love scenes!), family scene, conflict scene, etc.

6. What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your books?

That there is so much work that goes into that book we read in two days; amazing amounts of time and effort that I never realized until I sat down to write one of my own. Six months is quick, nine months to a year more the norm. Then there's me who took almost ten years to write Jennifer's Garden. Of course that's including two breaks for childbirth and child-rearing, a full-time job before that and more after school activities than two children should have time for! Not to mention a few other manuscripts tucked away in my file drawer for later revision.

7. What authors or friends influenced you in helping you become a writer?

Roxanne St. Clair has been one of my biggest helps in refining my craft. She corralled my thoughts and characters into a manageable space and is largely responsible for turning on the marketing wheels in my brain. Brenda Rickman Vantrease and Eliza Knight helped me with final revisions last year as well as Leda Swann early on.

My local author friends Wynter Daniels, Julie Salvo, Pamela LaBud, Terry Odell, Tammy Strickland and a host of others helped teach me the ins and outs of the writing business as well as provided moral support. It takes a community!

8. What does your family think about your career as a published author?

Both my kids are voracious readers and love the fact that I write books. They don't like it when I'm on the computer when they want to play (which is why most of my writing occurs during school hours and late at night), but they appreciate what I'm doing, the fact I'm striving toward a goal.

My husband is very supportive. Would love nothing more than to see me succeed and no, I'm sure the hope of early retirement has nothing to do with it. He actually promotes my book everywhere he goes (works in offices filled with women). God love him—as do the ladies!

9. Besides writing, what other interests do you have?

When I'm not writing I'm either gardening or toting kids around. My first job is Mom and they're only young once. Otherwise, I love to travel (with and without the wee ones) and if there's ocean nearby, I'm on board—the airline, not the cruise line. No cruising. I get a bit itchy when I can't see land. And sea sick, if I can't see the horizon.

10. Can you tell us about what’s coming up next for you writing wise?

As I mentioned, my next novel Lust on the Rocks will be released this October, followed by the third in the series next summer. Still debating on the title, though not the story. Already have that outlined and ready to go. So when the kids go back to school, I get back to writing!

THE IDEAL MAN by Julie Garwood

THE IDEAL MAN – Julie Garwood
Dutton (Hardcover)
ISBN: 978-0-525-95225-1
August 2011
Romantic Suspense

St. Louis, Missouri; Winston Falls, South Carolina – Present Day

Dr. Eleanor Sullivan has just finished emergency surgery at St. Vincent’s and is desperately looking forward to a jog in the nearby park. Finally her surgical fellowship will be over in just a few days and she can consider where she wants to work next—or stay at St. Vincent’s. For some reason she can’t make up her mind, and now she has her sister Ava’s pre-wedding party to endure before she can clear her mind. When Ellie brought her then fiancé John home to meet the family, the next day she found Ava and John in bed together. Now Ava wants Ellie to be in her wedding so that nobody will believe the gossip about why Ellie’s engagement ended. Really, the main reason Ellie doesn’t want to return home is Evan Patterson, the boy who started stalking her when she was eleven years old, and after several attacks, by the age of twelve, he had kidnapped her and almost beat her to death. His family’s money kept him out of prison and in psychiatric facilities after every attack and arrest, but six months ago he left the latest place and hasn’t been heard from since. Ellie knows he is still looking to kill her. And then to complicate things, as she’s jogging in the park she hears three gunshots and then a man and woman walk past her. Several seconds later, men with FBI shirts start running after them, the man turns and shoots an agent, and the couple runs away. After stabilizing the agent, with his final breath before falling unconscious, he asks Ellie to operate on him. The agent’s partner, Max Daniels, questions her on the way to the hospital, but because of the odd clothing and wigs on the couple, there is no way she could identify them. But how are these two arms dealers supposed to know Ellie can’t identify them? Now she has three people wanting to kill her.

Max Daniels has been on the trail of Cal and Erika Landry for months to try to stop their selling of illegal firearms. They almost had them captured in Missouri until Cal turned around and shot Agent Goodman. At first he thought Ellie was one of the soccer players at the park, but soon finds out she’s a trauma surgeon, and Agent Goodman wants only her to operate on him. But things, of course, escalate, and the pair think Ellie might be a witness and able to identify them. After an attempt is made to kill Agent Goodman in the hospital, Ellie must be taken somewhere for safety. Max decides he is the only one capable of guarding her, since she has to go back home for her sister Ava’s party. Spending time with Ellie after he finds out about her stalker from long ago has Max increasingly protective and attracted to Ellie. Between seeing Ava trying to ignore the fact she didn’t steal Ellie’s fiancé, and trying to keep Ellie safe from being found by killers hired by the Landrys, Max has his hands full, especially at night with Ellie in his arms.

Once again Julie Garwood takes us on a magical journey with the fluency and flow of her writing. We are quickly brought into Ellie’s life; her job is moving on, but emotionally she’s really still waiting for Evan Patterson to finish the job of killing her; she just knows she and her family will never be rid of him. Max also had a difficult youth; his parents were killed in a traffic accident, and after his second foster home, he ran away at the age of seven rather than endure any more. Fortunately eight-year-old Simon Daniels found him hiding and took him home, and he finally found a family to love him. Told from each of their points of view, Max is quiet and in charge, not quite sure a woman would fit in his life with his dangerous work. Ellie knows she doesn’t want to get married and risk anyone else with Evan Patterson still on the loose; besides, no one could fit in with her crazy surgery schedule.

Each supporting character is a gem in Ms. Garwood’s hands. Evan Patterson is a vicious ghost; no one knows where he is, but he’s sure to be back to finish the job on Ellie. Ellie’s sister Ava cares for nothing but herself, her wedding, and her reputation in the town. Every bad thing in her life is because of Ellie. Ava’s twin sister is Annie, sweet Annie, who found her life’s work as a lawyer after seeing how Evan Patterson avoided prosecution over and over again, even after Ellie almost died from one of his attacks. Ellie’s parents and Max’s other FBI agents round out the story to perfection.

THE IDEAL MAN is, indeed, the ideal story if you enjoy action, suspense, and great medical action, along with a doctor we all would like to have. From beginning to end, Julie Garwood has hit all the high spots and claimed each character and situation as her own. I can guarantee you won’t go wrong with this story and, yes, you will be thanking me for recommending it. You’re welcome.

Historical Romance

Devon on the Southern Coast of England, 1816

In two magical weeks when they were but fifteen, Susan and Con became fast friends, then lovers. It was a true love that should have lasted forever, but Susan’s insecurities made her send Con on his way with a deep wound in his heart. Now, eleven years later, Con is back, having inherited the title and estate from the mad old Earl of Wyvern. It’s an inheritance he doesn’t want; it should have been his brother’s. Besides, he has another title and estate from his immediate branch of the Somerford family (the branch thankfully free from the madness that ran in the old earl’s blood), and his memories of Crag Wyvern are still painful. His years fighting in the late wars did nothing to ease his bitterness.

For the last three years, Susan Kerslake served as the old earl’s secretary. She’s now acting as housekeeper at Crag Wyvern while searching for the gold the old earl stole from the local freetraders. Susan and her brother David hold an ambiguous position in the neighborhood. They were raised in the home of their uncle, the local squire, though they are actually the illegitimate children of his wife’s sister and the chief of the smugglers—who is always known as Captain Drake. Now that the captain has been caught and transported, is it up to his son to become the next Captain Drake? Most of the citizens of the area depend on the smuggling for their livelihoods. Susan and David’s mother took all their savings and followed her lover to Australia. It’s very important to her children and the whole community to find the gold hidden by the old earl. Susan fears for her brother if the smuggling runs must continue. Since the end of the war, more patrols are guarding the coast.

The meeting between Susan and Con is a momentous one. The old feelings are there, but Con, especially, puts up a valiant fight against the attraction. He has in mind a very suitable lady for a wife. He intends to look into the freetrade in the area before leaving as soon as he can.

THE DRAGON’S BRIDE is a highly emotional tale of star-crossed lovers. Con’s wounds are deep, both from Susan’s cruel dismissal and the war. Susan suffers guilt over her past action toward Con and can’t help wondering how much she is responsible for the vulnerability she sometimes sees in his eyes. At the same time, she’s torn between her feelings for him and her loyalty to her brother and friends.

Complexity marks both the people and the multi-threaded plot of THE DRAGON’S BRIDE. It’s a definite page-turner; be prepared to get caught up in the tale.

This novel includes characters from other books. THE DRAGON’S BRIDE is the reissued sixth book in the Company of Rogues series, and book two of the Three Georges. Ms. Beverley builds complete and consistent worlds. To see how the stories intertwine, check out her website at

Encantadora Resort, Florida – Present Day

With the tour company she works for downsizing, Lila Hayes agrees to a temporary assignment working onsite at one of the resorts. Of course, while she knows this won’t be a holiday vacation, Lila doesn’t expect that the place would be like a little world of its own, complete with little kids constantly demanding her attention, romance between coworkers, and backbiting. But after dumping her boyfriend when he tricked her out of the money she’d saved for college, any place is a good place to be. Lila certainly isn’t in the market to start a new relationship, yet one glimpse of her fellow employee, Jackson Koble, has her pausing in her tracks. Nobody that handsome and charming should be someone she’d be interested in, yet she can’t deny the sparks of chemistry that fly when they touch.

Jackson is at this southern Florida resort for a change of pace and mental recovery after his father’s sudden death. He likes the work at Encantadora, but things really turn better when Lila shows up. He can barely keep his eyes off her, even though she puts up an invisible “do not touch” wall. Can he break the barrier and get to know the beautiful and luscious Lila? Jackson suspects that something (or somebody) has made her resist his overtures. Well, that will just make him work harder to win her, because she is definitely a woman worth the risk.

Despite their obstacles (Lila’s resistance and interference from fellow employees), Jackson does a good job of pursuing Lila. He must first win her trust, since she has been left with the idea that men can’t be trusted. Then there are the busy jobs they both have at the resort that leave them only a little bit of time to get to know each other. Author Rebecca L. Boschee has aptly and exquisitely detailed life behind the scenes at one of those all-inclusive family resorts. Lila’s job of babysitting the children leaves her worn out, but she still manages to win the affection of a little boy. When the boy’s father begins a friendship with Lila, Jackson’s campaign to win her is thrown for a loop. Just when Jackson thinks he’s successfully wooed Lila, along comes the bump in the road on their path to a happily ever after.

A cute, fast paced tale that is good for those times when you want a quick read, LAST RESORT has a motley cast of characters that are too numerous to list. However, Ryan, Lacey, Jenna, Pascalle, and Pug all play minor parts and add to the rich detail of LAST RESORT. And finally, there is Lila’s ex; Brody isn’t quite ready to give her up. Will he come between Jackson and Lila?

An engaging tale, pick up LAST RESORT at your local library or in online bookstores.

When their respective public relations assistants get the bright idea of their touring together, both Dylan and Grace realize it’s going to be hard for two people who talk about sex to not think about doing it…with each other!

YOU SEXY THING! gets right to the heat in the opening scene when a distracted Dylan gets off on the wrong floor and right into Grace’s room. Even as they discuss sex in general terms to their listeners on radio, the two dance around the subject with each other. Of course, as rivals, they both think their book is the best. Their rivalry certainly heats up the pages in more ways than one! As the son of a free spirited couple, Dylan thinks sex should be handled with thought and dignity. Grace grew up in a Leave it to Beaver type of household, and her idea of sex is to let it all hang out. Dylan and Grace are a case of opposites at war—and attraction. Meanwhile, they go on tour together, which forces them into close contact as they travel. Even as they spar over their differences, they can barely keep their hands off each other. How long will it take before Dylan and Grace end up in bed together? Will an affair last just as long as the book tour, or can they make it into something that goes beyond? And what about the other woman in Dylan’s life…the one he is about to propose to?

Tori Carrington helped launch the Harlequin Blaze line ten years ago with YOU SEXY THING! and readers got a good, hold-with-asbestos-gloves type of read this line is noted for. This tale is in copies of UNDENIABLE PLEASURES—out now. Even though this was written ten years ago, YOU SEXY THING! is a tale for the modern ages. Grab a cold drink and get ready to dig in for some hot reading.

Provence, France - Present Day and the Past

When Eve meets Dom, a wealthy, successful older man, she immediately falls for his charm. With him, she feels the safety and stability she’s craved throughout her life, and senses that they are kindred spirits. So, when he asks her to move with him to France after only a few months of dating, Eve recklessly agrees. Life is idyllic as they explore and renovate Les Genévriers, the charming but ramshackle farmhouse Dom bought, finding unique treasures in the place that is swiftly becoming home. But as the seasons change, so to does their relationship, and Eve starts to question how well she knows the man she is living with. Strange occurrences in the house have also spooked her, and Eve’s doubts continue to grow.

Bénédicte Lincel has lived at Les Genévriers almost all of her life, her family being the owners of the farmhouse and the hamlet surrounding it for generations. Now though, she is the only one left, and she is being haunted by the ghosts of her siblings. As she struggles to get through the days, she reminisces about her life; her childhood with her blind sister, Marthe, and cruel brother, Pierre; the downturn the farm takes around the time of the Second World War; and helping her sister to “see” the flowers Marthe would use in her famous perfumes. Always Bénédicte is aware that some of those that will haunt her have reasons, and she is dreading the time that the mistakes of the past will revisit her. For there are secrets at Les Genévriers—secrets that will tear apart the dream-perfect life that Eve is trying to build.

Alternating between the lives of Eve and Bénédicte, THE LANTERN is an intricate tale of suspense and secrets. Growing up, Eve’s parents were constantly warring with one another, both before and after their divorce, leaving both her and her brother unsettled. Dom gives her the peace she’s always looked for, and Les Genévriers offers her the home she’s always craved. Part of her wonders if they hadn’t rushed things, if her impulsive decision to give up her career and life in London won’t come back to haunt her. But in the early, halcyon days of life in the French countryside, Eve is content to create a home and dream of what the future can bring. Bénédicte, born in the 1920’s, grew up unaware of the poverty she lives in, due to the richness of life that surrounds her. The only thing marring the perfection of her life is the cruelty that only she sees in her brother Pierre. Haunted always by the ghosts of her past, the physical manifestations of those she has lost leave Bénédicte worrying and wondering about her future. The stories of the two women, told concurrently, intertwine only at the end, as Eve is impacted by horrific events that Bénédicte is not even fully aware of.

While it starts off a little slow, THE LANTERN is an engrossing story about two very different women and the home that both of them loved.

California and Montmajor - Present Day

The last thing in the world Stella Greco ever expected to hear was a man claiming to be the father of her son. In fact, she had hoped to bypass the whole father part of parenthood by using a sperm donor in the first place. As if that wasn’t bad enough, the “father” is Vasco de la Cruz Arellano y Montoya, King of Montmajor. Stella wants to believe that this is a mistake, but one look in Vasco’s eyes—her son Nicky’s eyes—and she knows he’s telling the truth.

Vasco wants Nicky to be a part of his life, and after meeting Stella he knows he won’t mind that she’s part of the package. He decides that the best way to convince Stella to come to Montmajor is to seduce her—and then fate hands him an even better plan. Stella’s job is cut as a result of financial hardships, and she has no other immediate prospects. She comes to Montmajor ostensibly to restore the books in the palace library, but it’s not long before Vasco has lured her into his bed. As someone who never wants to get married, Vasco sees this situation as the perfect solution: he has his heir and a beautiful woman in his life. But will Stella be willing to settle for being the royal mistress?

An impulsive decision at eighteen has left Vasco with his work cut out for him in CLAIMING HIS ROYAL HEIR. Law in Montmajor dictated that younger children leave the country at eighteen so they don’t get any ideas about challenging for succession. Even though he was raised knowing this law and that his brother would inherit the kingdom, Vasco still assumed his father would do something to keep him in the country. Hurt and disappointed, he lashed out, but now that he’s the ruler of Montmajor, Vasco has some regrets about his earlier actions. Seeing Nicky, however, he can’t completely regret his donation. Stella has learned the hard way that counting on someone else for her happiness is a mistake, and she’s terrified about letting Vasco into Nicky’s and her life. However, she can’t help but be charmed by the vulnerabilities she sees in the typically self-confident man, and she finds herself agreeing to give him a chance.

Not your typical secret baby story, CLAIMING HIS ROYAL HEIR is a refreshing change in more ways than one. There is no animosity between the characters, and even though Vasco’s initial plan is to seduce Stella, when they do finally come together, it doesn’t seem as if it’s part of a plan. An engaging fairy-tale type romance, look for CLAIMING HIS ROYAL HEIR.

Urban Fantasy

Dreg City- Present Day

Evy Stone has died…twice, and she is back once more to battle the evils housed in Dreg City. She has endured goblin torture, lost the members of her Triad, became an ally with vampires and shifters, battled a demon, and saved dozens of half-breed experiments from a mad scientist. All in a day's work right? Now Evy is in an even bigger mess. Gifted with magical healing powers, Evy has become the science experiment. Is her blood capable of curing a vampire's bite? Can she keep it from falling into the wrong hands?

Love. Betrayal. New Friendships. Evy and Wyatt (her boss/ lover) will have to fight enemies they never knew they had and befriend those who seek their deaths.

Do not wait a second longer. Buy this book and the previous two in the Dreg City series to find out what you are missing! ANOTHER KIND OF DEAD brings back what readers loved about THREE DAYS TO DEAD (2009), the first in the Dreg City series. This third book treats readers to fun and easy to love characters while being completely original and entertaining. Not too much action, not too little romance, a perfect blend of everything readers are looking for.

Evy is the strong-willed, sarcastic female lead who is quickly becoming a trend throughout urban fantasy novels. Evy is one of my favorite characters, however, because she is real; she is damaged. Many authors of urban fantasy make their female protagonists too cold and tough, with layers that other characters and readers cannot hope to penetrate. Kelly Meding has found the perfect balance of that with Evy Stone. Yes, she is cold and damaged, but not so much that every once and a while someone can’t slip through the cracks in the shell she made. Namely, Wyatt Truman. Her boss turned lover after THREE DAYS TO DEAD. Wyatt is a great contrast and companion for Evy. Sexy and protective, Wyatt knows when to let his lady handle her own fights. He is a great addition to this urban fantasy read. More side characters join in cahoots with Evy and Wyatt. Kismet, Milo, Phineas and others add great diversity and spunk to the story.

The beginning of this book is out of place. Nothing really happens that helps further the overall story. Some events are just loose ends tied up from book two; others are either left unexplained or do not recur until the end of the story. There are a few plot points that could have been better explained or tied up. However, I do not want to further explain for fear that it will be developed in book four coming 2012.

If you are looking for an action packed book full of likable characters and just the right amount of romance, this is the series for you. ANOTHER KIND OF DEAD is a great addition to the series and really makes up for what readers thought AS LIE THE DEAD (2010) lacked: direction, romance, and a good "bad guy". The Dreg City series is a perfect read for fans of Kasey Mackenzie, Karen Chance, Dianne Sylvan, and other urban fantasy authors.

Royal, Texas – Present Day

After a near fatal accident left heiress Macy Reynolds scarred, she has finally had her last plastic surgery that at least restores her beauty to near what it was before, but has still left her insecure in her looks. Christopher Richardson, her teenage love who left town years ago, arrives in town, ready to flaunt his newfound wealth and influence. Macy dropped him as a teen due to pressure from her father. Chris begins to pursue Macy, which is okay with her, but she has self doubts as to whether he wants her because he still finds her attractive, or because he wants to score points with her. See what you could have had if we stayed together? Slowly and surely, a relationship develops.

Chris is in Royal to submit a bid on a project to remodel the Texas Cattleman’s Club and wants to impress the hierarchy at the club to show how he rose from being poor to rich and powerful. Yes, he did start out to woo Macy for revenge, but once he got to know her, he could clearly see that not only has she changed, but that he still desires her. Yet her doubts over why he’s interested in her lead to conflicts between them. Can Chris make her see that it is Macy that he wants, and it’s not an ego trip on his part?

A lot has changed for Chris and Macy since they were teenagers, in THE REBEL TYCOON RETURNS. Macy readily admits that back then she thought more of material pleasures than her love for Chris. But her accident has made her see life in a new way, and she now thinks more of helping others than herself. Yet the changes in her have left her insecure, so when Chris comes back into her life ready to take up where they left off, she can’t help but wonder if revenge is on his mind. Both Macy and Chris keep their relationship low key, mainly because they aren’t sure how Macy’s father will react when he finds out they’re dating. Then there are the gossipmongers of Royal who think Chris is after Macy either for revenge or to help get his foot in the door at the Club with his project. As for Macy, her emotions are still based on an ex-fiancé who dumped her right after her accident. She still reacts as though her beautiful face is scarred and Chris can’t possibly be attracted to her.

Mixed in with their complicated relationship, Chris and Macy are surrounded by the doings at the Texas Cattleman’s Club as Macy’s best friend Abby Langley is embroiled in an intense battle with Brad Price for control of the club. Will sides be taken? THE REBEL TYCOON RETURNS is part of the Texas Cattleman’s Club: The Showdown series, but you can read this tale as a standalone, but I wouldn’t recommend it as Abby and Brad play small, but vital parts here.

An emotional journey of lovers battling the demons of their youth to find their way home into each other’s arms, THE REBEL TYCOON RETURNS is an intense, engaging story you won’t want to miss.

Romantic Suspense

Sacramento, California – Present Day

The last thing Sergeant Zach McKnight of the Sacramento Police Department wants is another cold case. But finding bones in the bottom of a hole on a construction site is about to change his life, and many others’. The funny thing is that the bones hadn’t been dug up; the construction workers confirmed they weren’t there the night before. Someone has obviously dug up these bones and placed them at the construction site so they would be found. Forensics soon reveals they are approximately 20 years old, and belonged to a male age 18 to 20. Old Vietnam War dog tags found with the body eventually reveal they belonged to Max Shelden, and the police intend to find out what happened to him.

When Zack arrives at Veronica Osborne’s house to tell her about Max, she was hoping to hear they had found him and he was returning. She’d been waiting all these years for him to return after he was dragged away from their house kicking and screaming to the Sierra School for Boys, where he had been sent all those years ago. His stepfather, Veronica’s father George, hated Max because he was half African-American. After finding pot in his room, George had Max taken away, never to be heard from again—he supposedly ran away from the school several months after he arrived. Veronica is sure no one will investigate Max’s death too deeply, until other people connected to him also turn up dead. Veronica’s alcoholic father appears to have fallen down the stairs in his house while drunk, but investigation reveals it was deliberate. Then a supervisor of the old school dies tied up, with vomit in her mouth, as though in an autoerotic scenario.

Until someone realizes all these people have the Sierra School for Boys in common, everything seems surreal. Zach and his partner, Frank Rodriguez, along with other investigators in the state, must combine their information and see what the common thread is between the murders—and who and why someone is killing these people.

Despite the sad and awful circumstances, Eileen Carr has written a story that is very addicting. The action is fast paced, and repartee between the characters is realistic, and the interesting characters make the story even more outstanding. We come close to understanding the problems the children of alcoholics and abusers suffer from throughout their later lives. And the sickness that hides inside one person when combined with other sick people leads to even more horrific actions. Zach and Veronica have both suffered from horrible experiences as children and have learned to cope the best way they can. Veronica’s life as an ER nurse and Zach’s life as a policeman have given their lives meaning. Not to say that their experiences don’t linger today; Veronica still covered up for her father and took the abuse he dished out her whole life before he was murdered.

It might seem as if there are a lot of secondary characters, but they really only put in short appearances. There’s Susan Tennant, who dug up Max’s bones, the bones that would force people to care and pay attention to what happened all those years ago. Susan was part of what happened to Max, and has tried ever since then to make amends; she will get her just punishment. Gary Havens was at the Sierra School for Boys all those years ago and knows what happened to Max and everyone else who was sent to that torture chamber. Lyle Burton is up for the director of CPS for the state, but he was the head of the Sierra School back then; his participating and refusing to see what was in front of his face caused misery to many. Matthew Cassell was also at the school and is now a paramedic who works closely with Veronica. Ryan Arnott worked at the Sierra School, and gets what he deserves the same as he dished it out. And last but not least is George Osborne, Max’s stepfather and Veronica’s father. His hatred of his stepson inspired him to send him away to the school, and his anger in general caused Veronica to spend a lot of time hiding from the anger then, and living with his drunken vitriol even now.

VANISHED IN THE NIGHT, while not a happy, everyone lives happily-ever-after tale, exposes child abuse in ways we cannot fathom and will horrify us. It overcomes the depression and shows us the other side of that trauma. Children die and others are abused and live with the consequences years later, but the human spirit wants to survive and does its best to save the souls of those left behind. Don’t let the subject matter deter you; it’s a wonderful, uplifting, thought provoking book that is a quick and fascinating read.

Texas - The Present

Caitlyn Wakefield's horse ranch is in financial trouble. Hassan, a rich acquaintance, helped bail her out. Now he is sending an advisor to help her get her ranch back in good financial standing. The last person she expects to show up is Luke Kilgore. He worked on the ranch when her father was manager, and then abruptly left without a goodbye the night she was going to relay a big secret. She was pregnant. Now Luke is a successful businessman, a billionaire, who lives in England.

Although Luke tells himself that since Caitlyn's mother fired him and ran him off years ago in humiliation, Caitlyn means nothing to him. He is even considering asking a young woman in England to marry him. He might believe his indifference if his body and imagination didn't react so vividly around Caitlyn. Still, he will to do what Hassan asked and leave. That remains his goal until he sees his son in a chance encounter.

Both Caitlyn and Luke are well drawn characters, both driven in their own way to succeed, both stymied by the past and how to proceed. Plus, any accord is blocked by the terrible emotions surrounding their separation years ago. The pages are full of emotional turmoil and the attraction only love can inspire.
