Historical Romance

Richmond, England – 1817

Marc Darcett, Earl of Hawkfield, better known as Hawk, comes to visit his mother and sisters. Hawk enjoys his bachelorhood and hopes never to change his status as a ladies’ man. He is pleased to see his best friend, Tristan Gatewick, Duke of Shelbourne, who married last year, and Tristan’s sister, Lady Julianne. Little Julianne has grown into a beautiful young lady ready to break many hearts this season. Julianne, in her fourth Season, had planned to stay with the earl’s family, but they have been called to Bath to wait on an elderly relative. It is decided that Julianne will stay with Hawk’s Aunt Hester. Tristan asks Hawk to be her unofficial guardian and watch out for her. Hawk is shocked; he is a rake after all, but he would never compromise his friend’s sister, so he agrees.

Julianne has loved Hawk for several years even though he still treats her like a child. Noting Julianne’s interest in her nephew, Hester gives her some sage advice. She tells her they must plan a seduction; she must tease and flirt with Hawk, all the while keeping him at a distance. Lust comes first, then marriage. Julianne scoffs at the idea.

That evening at a ball, Hawk saves Julianne from a notorious rake by dancing a waltz with her. He is surprised how attracted he is to her, and Julianne is in alt over his attention, only to be dashed when he tells everyone she is like a sister to him. Her dreams are shattered. She decides on the perfect revenge. She will take Hester’s advice and tease and flirt until he falls in love with her, then she will tell him he is like a brother to her.

Hester suggests she and her friends write a pamphlet advising young women how to attract a rake; it becomes an instant success. And when Hawk kisses Julianne, sparks ignite…

HOW TO SEDUCE A SCOUNDREL is a charming tale with Hawk desperately hanging on to his single status and Julianne so much in love with him, but trying not to show it. They are both wonderful characters. At the beginning of each chapter is a notation from A Scoundrel’s Code of Conduct, as Julianne writes How to Seduce a Scoundrel. Will the bachelors of the ton know what hit them? And will Hawk forgive himself for an indiscretion from his younger days? Hester is a good secondary character, an eccentric elderly woman who is quite an original. The story moves along at an excellent pace with good dialogue.

An entertaining tale, HOW TO SEDUCE A SCOUNDREL should be placed on your summer reading schedule. You are sure to enjoy this captivating story. Look for Ms. Dreiling’s next book, HOW TO RAVISH A RAKE, coming soon.
