England – Present Day

When a walk in the park turns stormy, Jessica Taylor grabs her dog Frankie and ends up huddling on the ground clutching Frankie and another frightened dog while the wind blows wild, rain pelts them, and lightening touches all around. A man comes to claim his dog and offers Jessica and Frankie shelter; they all run for his car. And when lightening strikes again, Jessica suddenly smells her burning flesh and everything goes dark.

Lauren Richardson and her four children, Sophie, Nicole, Toby, and Teddy are in the park. While her children play, Lauren speaks in hushed tones to the man she came to meet. When the wind picks up and the storm begins, there is confusion all around, and as her children watch in horror, Lauren is struck by lightening.

Jessica wakes up in a hospital bed in a private room and finds herself hooked to monitors. The nurse is calling her Mrs. Richardson, and there are pictures drawn in crayon on the walls. Jessica informs the nurse that she has her confused with someone else, but the nurse insists her husband Grant and her four children are waiting to see her. Children? Husband? This is a mistake, but Jessica is tired. All she wants to do is sleep; surely she is having a really weird dream.

Finally, Jessica wakes and finds a different nurse waiting on her. She's not in the private room, but a hospital ward. The man she met in the park is waiting at her bedside. He says his name is Daniel Brennan and he’s holding a large bouquet of sunflowers—her favorite! Ah, so she was only dreaming when she thought she woke up as that Lauren woman. Thank goodness. Jessica does not plan to have kids for years and years...if ever! But she tires quickly. Dan leaves and she sleeps. And wakes again in Lauren's body!

LIFE AS I KNOW IT is the story of Jessica Taylor whose job as a legal secretary is just a stepping-stone on her way up the ladder into the legal system. She has absolutely no plans to marry or have children, but by a twist of fate, or maybe an infraction in time, Jessica finds herself thrown into the life (and body!) of another woman—and she is really "living" that life!

Lauren Richardson is the wife of a wealthy doctor, has four children, and lives a privileged life that is very different from Jessica's. Jessica doesn't want to live someone else's life, but she has no control over what happens. She sleeps, and wakes as Lauren, in Lauren's body, and in bed beside Lauren's husband. After spending the day "pretending" to be Lauren, finally Lauren/Jessica sleeps, which means that Jessica soon opens her eyes, back in her own bed and her own apartment. The only thing Jessica knows for sure is that both she and Lauren were hit by lightening. Somehow, when she wakes as Lauren, she has barely ten hours to live Lauren’s life before sleep claims her and she wakes anew as Jessica. Lauren’s children are happy; all but little Teddy, who knows that Jessica is not his mother, but someone in his mother's body pretending to be her.

This phenomenal story is paced just right and all the threads come together in the end neatly for a satisfying conclusion after many twists and turns. The characters are spot on. Jessica has fallen for Dan, but as time goes on and she has to be in two places at once, it gets hard for her to explain her need to sleep so many hours. Lauren’s husband, Grant, is not the adoring spouse he pretends to be, and Jessica knows she must continue this strange balancing act to protect Lauren’s children. Will Jessica ever get to be herself?

LIFE AS I KNOW IT is the debut novel of author Melanie Rose. This book has an extraordinary history; it was self-published in England and built a huge following of readers when Harper Collins snapped it up. And be glad they did! This book is amazing; you will laugh and cry and remember the story for years to come, and it is definitely a Perfect 10!

Book Giveaway: A Tale of Two Demon Slayes by Angie Fox!

Out now!

In the ultimate showdown for survival, may the best demon slayer win.
Last month, I was a single preschool teacher whose greatest thrill consisted of color-coding my lesson plans. That was before I learned I was a slayer. Now, it’s up to me to face curse-hurling imps, vengeful demons, and any other supernatural uglies that crop up. And, to top it off, a hunk of a shape-shifting griffin has invited me to Greece to meet his family.

But it’s not all sun, sand, and ouzo. Someone has created a dark-magic version of me with my powers and my knowledge—and it wants to kill me and everyone I know. Of course, this evil twin doesn’t have Grandma’s gang of biker witches, a talking Jack Russell terrier, or an eccentric necromancer on its side. In the ultimate showdown for survival, may the best demon slayer win.

Q&A with Pam Jenoff!!!

1. Tell us about your newest release.

Almost Home is the story of Jordan, an intelligence officer with the U.S. government. For the past decade, she’s traveled the world on dangerous assignments, but has always managed to avoid England due to the painful memories of her boyfriend Jared who died tragically when they were students. Now, she finds herself compelled to take an assignment in London to be near a terminally ill friend. Once there, she is contacted by a classmate who tells her that he doesn’t believe Jared’s death was an accident and asks her to help find out what really happened. So she finds herself drawn into that mystery as well as an important government mission.

2. When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

I always wanted to be a writer; I was one of those kids who was forever scribbling down stories and showing them to anyone I could. But my real impetus to get serious came about eight years ago. I became an attorney one week before 9/11 happened and after that tragic event, I had a life epiphany that if I wanted to realize my dream of becoming a novelist I had to get started right away. So I took an evening course at a local college called “Write Your Novel This Year” and started to write.

3. Where do you get your information or ideas for your stories?

My books are richly influenced by the places I’ve lived and things I’ve experienced. For Almost Home, I was traveling through Spain with two friends while living in Europe and one night as we lay awake in our pension I began brainstorming the idea of this young American woman who had gone to Cambridge (as I had) and now worked for the government internationally (as I did at the time) but avoided England because her boyfriend died there (mine did not.) The story just kind of took off from there.

4. What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?

Mornings. I can only write in the mornings, between five and eleven. So I go to bed very early.

5. What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your books?

That the characters speak to me. For example, I never knew that there would be a sequel to The Kommandant’s Girl until one of the characters stood up and demanded her story be told, which became The Diplomat’s Wife. Similarly, I didn’t know that there would be a sequel to Almost Home until Jordan told me so and that book, Hidden Things, will be out in July.

6. What authors or friends influenced you in helping you become a writer?

I’ve been blessed by some wonderful writer-mentors, too many to name, as well as the support and encouragement of family and friends. I read a lot of historical fiction growing up: John Jakes, Herman Wouk, Leon Uris to name a few. There are also some books on writing I really like, such as Natalie Goldberg’s Writing Down the Bones.

7. What does your family think about your career as a published author?

They are so supportive and happy for me and tell everyone about my books. Though sometimes they get mad when I won’t tell them what happens in the next book.

8. Can you tell us about what’s coming up next for you writing wise?

The sequel to Almost Home is called Hidden Things and it will be out this July. And I’m working on something next about which I am super-excited. It brings together elements of all of my other books. It’s tentatively called The Anniversary Clock, but it’s really too early to say more beyond that.

About the author:

Pam Jenoff born was in Maryland and raised outside Philadelphia. She attended George Washington University in Washington, D.C., and Cambridge University in England. Upon receiving her master’s in history from Cambridge, she accepted an appointment as Special Assistant to the Secretary of the Army. The position provided a unique opportunity to witness and participate in operations at the most senior levels of government, including helping the families of the Pan Am Flight 103 victims secure their memorial at Arlington National Cemetery, observing recovery efforts at the site of the Oklahoma City bombing and attending ceremonies to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of World War II at sites such as Bastogne and Corregidor.

Following her work at the Pentagon, Jenoff moved to the State Department. In 1996 she was assigned to the U.S. Consulate in Krakow, Poland. It was during this period that Pam developed her expertise in Polish-Jewish relations and the Holocaust. Working on matters such as preservation of Auschwitz and the restitution of Jewish property in Poland, Jenoff developed close relations with the surviving Jewish community.

Having left the Foreign Service in 1998 to attend law school at the University of Pennsylvania, Jenoff is now employed as an attorney in Philadelphia.

Pam is the author of The Kommandant's Girl, which was an international bestseller and nominated for a Quill award, as well as The Diplomat's Wife and Almost Home.

Santa Barbara, California – Present Day

Samantha McNead, superstar publicist for the Heat, a professional baseball expansion team, has been called upon to handle a very sticky PR nightmare. It involves Wade O’Riley, the best defensive catcher in Major League Baseball. Because of Wade’s over abundant and very public playboy lifestyle, and being accused of fathering a child with a team groupie, Samantha has to do some major damage control. One of the corporations who endorse the Heat has a new conservative CEO with high family values who is more than upset with the scandal surrounding Wade, even though he is innocent of all wrong doing. Samantha’s father is one of the owners of the Heat and wants her to be Wade’s pretend girlfriend for a month until the scandal dies down. She’s mortified by having to play this role, but because she takes her job seriously, she has no choice. Things would be a lot better if she hadn’t made a major mistake where she and Wade spent a drunken night together stuck in an elevator having crazy monkey sex. But she’ll make this sacrifice and make sure that Wade keeps his hands to himself from here on out.

Wade is over the moon at having Samantha as his mock girlfriend. He can’t get over the incredible passionate night they shared and would love nothing more than to have many more nights with her. He’ll try his best to seduce the very buttoned up and professional Samantha at his friend’s upcoming wedding. But Samantha is stand-offish unless they are in public and surrounded by the paparazzi. If Wade has his way, he’ll find another elevator and show her how explosive they can be together.

Samantha is close to her sexual breaking point because Wade is always right by her side, teasing, flirting and whispering sexual innuendos about their elevator ride to the point where she can’t handle it. She does something very stupid at the wedding reception they attend together, where they act out another extended sex fest in a bathroom, of all things. Wade is ecstatic, while Samantha not so much. Because they must act as if they are in love, she has no choice but to put up with Wade. His feelings for Samantha have changed, and he wants to make their pretend relationship a reality.

Things become very stressful when Wade’s alcoholic father shows up on his doorstep, as well as Samantha’s ten-year-old nephew, Tag. With no other choice, both Samantha and Wade have a whole slew of new issues to deal with. Wade wants to work on things with Samantha, and even though she is all for spontaneous sex, he wants more than just a few weeks of mind blowing love making. He now wants forever with Samantha and has to figure out a way to show her.

It’s been awhile since I’ve read such a combustible and sexy romance as SLOW HEAT. This latest contemporary baseball romance is near perfect in its telling. If you love baseball, a hero who is an adorable take-charge type of guy, and a heroine who tries her best to do the right thing but can’t help but fall for the charms of the playboy type hero who makes her all hot and bothered, you need to read SLOW HEAT.

What I adored most of all is the fact that even though Samantha constantly tries to keep Wade at arm’s length, he keeps pushing in such a way that he isn’t too aggressive or he-man forceful. Wade enjoys loving life, from playing baseball to having a bad fast food addiction. When he wants something as bad as he wants Samantha, he won’t let go. They are two very different sides of a coin because their outlook on life and personalities are the total opposite from one another. They should clash, but they don’t. Wade is there to help Samantha loosen up and help her with Tag, a confused and lonely boy whose parents act as though he doesn’t exist. In turn, Samantha is there to show Wade the way he handles his drunk of a father. One of Wade’s faults is that he’s generous to a fault but thinks that as long as he hands out money, he’s doing the correct thing. These two begin to lean on each other, and from that they grow into better people.

The dialogue and secondary characters also make SLOW HEAT over all fun reading. The love scenes between Samantha and Wade are hot, sweet and so very addicting. You can’t help but want even more between these two.

Jill Shalvis has written one very satisfying read with this second title in her baseball series. I would recommend you read the first book, Double Play (July 2009) where Samantha and Wade are introduced. SLOW HEAT IS one book that deserves RRT’s Perfect 10 award.

Q&A with Kaki Warner and a book giveaway!

Welcome Kaki Warner to the Romance Reviews Today blog!! Plus, we'll have a giveaway for a copy of Pieces of Sky!

1. Tell us about your newest release.

My newest release is also my first release, which is a dream come true. Pieces of Sky, Book 1 of the Blood Rose Trilogy, is Brady’s story. As the eldest of the three Wilkins brothers, he’s the man in charge of their sprawling ranch in the mountains of New Mexico Territory of 1869. Already haunted by the violence of the past and desperate to protect what family he has left from a madman bent on revenge, the last thing he needs in his life is a prim, proper, rule-spouting English spinster, who also happens to be five months pregnant and on the run from her rapist. But that’s exactly what happens when their stagecoach slides over a cliff. Forced to recover in the male-dominated household at the Wilkins ranch, Jessica Thornton begins to reevaluate all her carefully penned rules of deportment as antipathy slowly becomes attraction and she learns that what’s “proper” might not always be what’s “right”. Against a backdrop of violence, vengeance, and unspeakable loss, these two wounded souls learn to trust again, and through laughter and courage find redemption, forgiveness and ultimately, love.

2. When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

Twenty-five years ago, after my husband and I moved from the sunny Southwest to the rainy Northwest and I tried to combat the gloom by reading, reading, reading. After wasting five hours on a truly awful book, I thought, hey, I can do that. So I wrote the first draft of what has evolved into Pieces of Sky. It was pretty awful, too, I have to say. So I put it aside and went back to living life. Then four years ago, I came across the manuscript in storage and before throwing it out, decided to give it another read. Still pretty awful, but not terrible awful. So I did another rewrite, entered it into several contests for feedback, made some changes, and then sent it out. Four months later I had an agent and a publisher, and now here I am, a twenty-five year overnight success. Better late than never, I guess.

3. Where do you get your information or ideas for your stories?

A lot of it comes from personal experience. I grew up in the Southwest (although I didn‘t live in mountains until we moved to Washington state), so I’m familiar with the climate, the geography, and the mindset of people who live close to nature and have a deep commitment to the land. I’ve also raised horses, and herded cattle, and I stayed in a Best Western once, which is almost like a Holiday Inn, only farther west.

4. What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?

I read every word aloud. It earns funny looks from the dog and my husband, but hearing what I’ve written really helps me pinpoint redundancies, awkward transitions and overly wordy dialogue. I also talk to my characters. Mostly, I fuss at them for doing things that will get them in trouble, or I laugh at them when they do something ridiculous. So far, they haven’t talked back, so I guess I’m still sane. Sorta.

5. What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your books?

That people liked it. Let me explain that. I didn’t write Pieces of Sky to match any genre guidelines, or to target a specific market, or to fit any pre-conceived molds of what would sell and what wouldn’t. I just wrote about a place I loved, peopled it with characters I would liked to have known, and set before them obstacles that aren’t that much different from what people might face today. Grief, loss, guilt, redemption. I was told it would never sell because it wasn’t a “traditional” romance, nor was it a “regular” western or “historical” enough for a true historical, and too violent for the women’s market. I sent it out anyway, because I believed in the story and I loved the characters, and because I promised them I would try to get their story out there. (Maybe I’m a little insane, after all). Luckily, I found an agent willing to take me on, and a publisher courageous enough to buck the market. To my delight, the book has been well received.

6. What authors or friends influenced you in helping you become a writer?

The author of that terrible book all those years ago was my biggest influence, because he/she gave me the courage to try to write a better one. I also had a wonderful friend who badgered me to go back to writing, even as we rode through the hills singing off-key cowboy ballads and herding cows (which were already stampeding away from us because of our singing, so it wasn’t that hard.) After her death five years ago, I thought a lot about what she said. Now she’s listed in the dedication. I think she’d be proud.

7. What does your family think about your career as a published author?

They think any minute now we’re going to be rich and famous. Just kidding. Maybe. Actually, they’ve been incredibly supportive. And maybe only a little surprised. They’ve also been hugely helpful regarding railroads (my husband’s a train geek), and weaponry (my son’s a weapons geek) and marketing (my daughter devised my web page and has spent endless frustrating hours trying to teach me about blogs, Facebook vs. Fanpage, e-newsletters, cyber-speak and how to navigate various social networking media.) I just smile and nod while plotting the next book in my head.

8. Can you tell us about what’s coming up next for you writing wise?

Not only can I tell you, I can bore you to tears about it. Book 2 of this trilogy, Open Country, will be out on June 1st. This story is about Hank, the tinkerer, the quiet one, the smart middle brother. After suffering near-fatal injuries in a train derailment, he awakens to find himself with a wife and two kids, none of whom he remembers. Not surprising, since his wife, Molly, desperate to protect her niece and nephew from their vicious stepfather, married him while he was in a coma, thinking when he died she would get the railroad settlement. Of course, he doesn’t die, and the vicious stepfather sends a tracker to the ranch, and Hank’s memory returns and he realizes his marriage is a sham and the woman he’s grown to love has deceived him and…well, things get really complicated then.
Book 3, which is Jack’s story, will be out in 2011. He’s the restless one, the wanderer and dreamer. After a three-year absence, he returns to the ranch, hoping to win his childhood sweetheart, only to have a woman from his past show up with a baby who has eyes just like his. In addition to that, horses are getting sick, the ranch is in trouble, and old enemies are threatening financial ruin. Then things get worse; his old love chooses the church over him, his new love has dreams of her own that don’t include a womanizing, gambling, wanderer, and a deadly spring storm almost kills them all. Luckily, none of the horses die. But as for the rest… you’ll have to buy the book!

Kaki Warner is the award-winning author of the Blood Rose Trilogy (Berkley Trade, Pieces of Sky, January 2010, Open Country,June 2010, Chasing the Wind, 2011), a historical series about the unpredictable West and the men and women who brought it to life against all odds. Although Kaki now lives on the eastern slopes of the Cascade Mountains in Washington State, she actually grew up in the Southwest. Her years spent riding horses and enjoying the expansive views of Texas became the inspiration for the backdrop of her novels – the wide open spaces of historic New Mexico Territory. Kaki spends her time gardening, hiking, reading, writing, and soaking in the view from the deck of her hilltop cabin with her husband and floppy-eared hound dog. For more information, please visit Kaki's website at

Now, for the contest....Have a question for Kaki or want to comment on her books or this interview? Post away and I'll pick and announce the winner on Friday night (Feb. 19th).

Good luck!

Montana Millionaires, Book 1
Silhouette Desire #1996
ISBN: 978-0-373-73009-4
February 2010
Series Romance

Montana – Present Day

Landing an interview with hotshot millionaire Jared Ryder would be a coup for any reporter, but the man proves to be elusive. He’s now in Montana, and reporter Melissa Warner is determined to get an interview as a ticket to a promotion at the Windy City Bizz. She figures that since he doesn’t like journalists, the only way to get close to him is to go undercover. Landing a job at the family ranch in Montana proves easy, and garnering Jared’s attention is even easier. Now, she just needs to get close enough to him to pry out the answers to a few questions she has. Then she can write up her story and head back to Chicago. But a sizzling attraction between her and Jared just might throw a wrench into her plans.

Jared’s worked hard at bringing success to his life and his family. He knows better than to trust outsiders, but the beautiful woman mucking out the horse stalls certainly has his attention. It doesn’t help that his sister, Stephanie, is bent on matchmaking, nor that Melissa proves to be both smart and mysterious. Jared fights the attraction, because to do so would mean he might reveal something about himself to someone other than his family—especially family secrets he doesn’t want revealed. And if he learns that Melissa is a reporter for a tabloid…

An intricate plan to gain access to a millionaire and the red-hot chemistry between the hunted and the hunter is the engaging plot of Barbara Dunlop’s SEDUCTION AND THE CEO. Melissa only wants to get ahead at the Bizz, in an occupation that means success is measured by who gets the juicy scoop first. Melissa concocts a story for why she’s in Montana, lands the job at the ranch, and it doesn’t take long for her to attract Jared’s attention. One look at her and he knows she’s trouble for his libido. Jared tries to resist, but with his little sister “helping” things along and Melissa trying to get close to him to learn more about him for her article, well, it won’t be long before heated looks turn to even hotter kisses...and more. Readers know it’s only a matter of time before Jared learns who Melissa really is and what she’s after. Will this put the damper on their attraction?

Ms. Dunlop successfully builds the scorching sexual tension between Jared and Melissa throughout SEDUCTION AND THE CEO. By the time they hit the sheets, readers will be rooting for them to make a future together. But will Melissa’s deception end up destroying their relationship? Can she make it up to him?

The first book in the Montana Millionaires series, we can expect more exciting stories in the next few months featuring Jared’s sister, Stephanie, and brother, Royce.

Love, deception, and a sexy Montana millionaire. A lethal combination you won’t want to miss. Make SEDUCTION AND THE CEO a part of your next book-shopping trip.

Encountering Kade—the darkly handsome stranger in the Toms family settlement—while searching for valuable clues, Alex is immediately suspicious; despite her misgivings, it’s evident that they are both seeking a reason for these mysterious and brutal deaths, and they agree to team up. Sensing that Alex knows more about these horrific killings than she’s letting on, Kade plans to use whatever means necessary to find the truth. Already deeply attracted, Kade is surprised to find that Alex is a Breedmate, that rare woman bearing a special birthmark and precious to the vampire race as the only woman able to give birth to a Breed baby. She deserves his care and protection. Alex is fascinated by this man; his gentleness and strength are confusing, but can he be trusted with her private nightmares? Kade, on the other hand, has some secrets of his own and needs to find the best way to tell Alex the truth about who he really is, as well as preparing her for her own heritage. As they continue to dig, they do find the answers, but the reality is more terrifying than either could ever imagine.

Lara Adrian adds her seventh book to this compelling Midnight Breed Series with SHADES OF MIDNIGHT, and she once again serves up a blockbuster hit. With other tasty morsels like KISS OF MIDNIGHT and VEIL OF MIDNIGHT under her belt, it’s easy to see why readers may want to start at the beginning of the series, but because they’re all so brilliantly written, each book can stand on its own. With a fast-paced tale of romantic suspense and intense and realistic characters—like Kade’s twin brother Seth, a few dependable minions, and Alex’s caring best friend, Jenna, to name a few—Lara Adrian compels readers to get hooked on her storylines, and that’s why SHADES OF MIDNIGHT deserves a Perfect 10.

Historical Romance

London, England – the 1800s

In order to be a successful courtesan, one must master the art. Imagine the wealth of knowledge that such a woman could offer regarding men’s sexuality and desires? One scarlet lady decided to do just that and penned a manual called Lady Rothburg’s Advice.

Brianna Northfield
Being married to the Duke of Rolthven, one of the most powerful men in society has its own set of issues and problems. Brianna is expected to be the prim and proper Duchess of Rolthven at all times, even in the bedroom. She is wildly attracted to her husband Colton, but yearns for passion and intimacy. When she stumbles across Lady Rothburg’s Advice, she secretly buys the book.

Brianna takes the advice to heart and starts to put the suggestions in motion. Colton is shocked senseless but aroused beyond measure by the seductress he married.

Rebecca Marston
Rebecca, Brianna’s best friend, is hopelessly in love with Robert Northfield. Robert is everything mothers warn their daughters about. He is wickedly handsome, a known flirt and renowned womanizer. His only saving grace is that he is the youngest brother of the Duke of Rolthven. Despite all of his flaws, Rebecca is determined to claim him. She is even willing to go as far as read the scandalous book Brianna recommends to see if she can catch her man.

First off, let me start by saying that LESSONS FROM A SCARLET LADY is one of the best books I’ve read in a long time. It has a little pizzazz, a bit of comedy and a lot of romance. The plot is somewhat different from other historical romance novels in that Brianna has already married the man of her dreams. She is not on a quest for a husband; instead she is on a mission to keep him. On the other hand, Rebecca falls for the bad boy and is willing to become a bad girl for him.

I am sure that readers will agree that Ms. Wildes has penned an excellent novel that is sure to be a favorite for many years to come. As such, LESSONS FROM A SCARLET LADY deserves no less than a Perfect 10! I guarantee that once you enter the lives of Rebecca and Brianna, you won’t stop reading until the very end.

Spotlight Review: SEX ON THE BEACH by Susan Lyons

SEX ON THE BEACH – Susan Lyons
Berkley Heat
ISBN: 978-0-425-23216-3
January 2010
Erotic Contemporary Romance

Ambergris Caye, Belize – Present Day

A wedding at a tropical resort provides for three tales of some red-hot coupling. Get ready for a taste of SEX ON THE BEACH that will rock your senses.

War of the Sexes

As the wedding planner, Sarah McCann, wants a perfect, beautiful wedding to go off without a hitch. Everything seems in order until the groom’s best friend, Free Lafontaine arrives with the proclamation that he’s on a mission to make the groom, Danny, see that he’s making a mistake. Of course, this is at odds with Sarah’s plans, although it doesn’t stop an instant sexual attraction between Sarah and Free to form. They may be butting heads over the wedding, but they’re in sync in the bedroom.
The title might be War of the Sexes, but it’s a battle to prove the happy bride and groom belong together for Sarah, while Free wants to show he’s right. Sarah is a by the book planner, seemingly at odds with a man as free as they come, Free. But sexual attraction knows no boundaries and these two know how to scorch the sheets—and any other place they can find…
Free does come off as a jerk at times, but at the skillful pen of Susan Lyons, he’s turned into a likeable guy by the end of War of the Sexes. You’ll be rooting for Sarah and Free to make their relationship work past the end of the wedding.

Sex with the Proper Stranger

The moment resort owner Ric Nunez spots wedding guest, New York model Tamiko Sato, in the lobby, he's captivated by her. However, Tamiko is with another man and off limits. This doesn’t stop Ric from wanting her and soon their paths cross when she nearly drowns and he rescues her. To his surprise, the sexual feelings are mutual…and he learns that she is only pretending to be lovers with the other man, Zane. They agree to enter into an affair that will end when she leaves Belize. But, will it be enough?
Both Tamiko and Ric have commitments which prevent them from having any future with each other. Tamiko supports her family with her modeling, while Ric is responsible for his motherless little girl. As their relationship builds between them in Sex with the Proper Stranger, so does trust. Tamiko’s secrets will bring a tear or two to a reader’s eyes, and Ric is the perfect man for her. She just has to make the fateful decision to take the plunge for a happily ever after.

Scorching sensuality rocks Sex with the Proper Stranger, another excellent tale in SEX ON THE BEACH.

Sexy Exes

Here come the mother and father of the bride, also known as the battling exes. James and Giovanna Moncrieff fell in love and married young, but just as fast they divorced after fights over propriety and responsibility. Now they are united for their only daughter’s wedding while Sarah, the wedding planner, works to keep them apart. Alas, they do run into each other, and it doesn’t take long for the sparks to fly…the sexual kind. But…but…they are divorced and don’t even care for each other, right? However, neither can ignore the attraction which zings between them and the sex is even hotter than when they were married.

Sexy Exes prove that love can be found the second time around. James and Giovanna have preconceived notions about each other and imagine their surprise to learn they were wrong! Though it takes a bit of a makeover and advice for James to peel away his staid image, he also learns that there’s more to Giovanna than what he thinks. The sexual tension runs sizzling hot in Sexy Exes, even as they try to act normal and be there for their daughter. Will they rediscover the magic of love once again? Find out in Sexy Exes.

Intermixed with these three scorching tales is the reason they’re all there in Belize: the wedding of Danny and Bella. Things aren’t as smooth as they appear. As each story is told simultaneously, there are several scenes that are repeated, but from different perspectives. This makes for an intriguing read in SEX ON THE BEACH.

Sex, sun and sand make a fun combination in a terrific tale I highly recommend. Forget the winter blues and grab yourself a copy of SEX ON THE BEACH.

A Perfect 10: REBELS AND TRAITORS - Lindsey Davis

A Perfect 10
St. Martin’s Press
ISBN: 978-0-312-59541-8
January 2010
Historical Fiction

England Before, During, and After the Civil War

The English Civil War is pretty much a period in British history with which most Americans have only a casual acquaintance. Most of us know about Oliver Cromwell and know that King Charles I was executed, but how many of us know what led up to the conflict and how it affected everyday citizens? Lindsey Davis has written this incredible, impeccably researched novel that will, while not quite in a nutshell, take us through the integral events leading up to the internal war that forever changed English life.

What do you do with a monarch who hasn’t a clue on how to govern? Or how to deal with the people he rules? Or even how to work with the members of his court? Charles, unlike his father, thinks that it is his God-given right to be king and that he owes nothing to his subjects; they are basically there to collect taxes to serve him. Despite plenty of warnings from his courtiers and advisors, Charles lives in a dream world, spending every penny he can collect while ignoring the needs of the citizens of England. All that will quickly come to a crashing, personally devastating end.

The everyday people who take sides in this conflict have to deal with the reality that they must either back their monarch, or take up arms against him. Both can and will be dangerous decisions. Gideon Jukes, son of a grocer, takes the side of the Parliamentarians who are determined to eliminate the need for a king. On the other side is Juliana Lovell, wife of a Royalist, Orlando, who has alienated his pro-rebel family. Then there is one who is thrown into the conflict because she has no one else, young Kinchin Tew, who will learn to be a chameleon in these dangerous times. How will these lives become intertwined? Life might be complicated for Charles I as he recruits his European family to fight the rebels, but for the average Englishman, it’s a daily matter of life and death. Which side is going to make their lives better? Or will either side be able to do that?

Gideon has always had an independent streak and, instead of apprenticing as a grocer, he begins to work with a printer. His family is supportive, but only his mother seems to truly understand her younger son. When the Trained Bands, local militias, in London begin to form, Gideon joins to stand up for his city as well as to oppose the rule of Charles I. Juliana is a survivor. Her quick thinking and calm composure in the face of danger make her the perfect wife for the mostly absent Orlando. Perfect because he's far from concerned about her or their children as he lives the life of a King's soldier and makes sure he gets as much as he gives to the army. His mercenary nature will become clear to Juliana. Secondary characters are vital and make a huge difference in the lives of Gideon, Juliana, Kinchin, and Orlando. Be prepared for a surprising and emotional conclusion.

I will admit that upon receiving REBELS AND TRAITORS, I was a bit intimidated by its size. But once readers get to know the multiple characters, this is a tough book to put down. It is a history lesson and a very enjoyable story of people and how they make their choices, how they live their lives, how they love, and how they survive in a world thrown into turmoil by a monarch who is oblivious to them, and those who have another agenda. Will it matter to the average Englishman who wins this conflict?

Interesting, realistic main characters that readers will care about, and plenty of well-rounded secondary ones, both real and fictional, make REBELS AND TRAITORS an incredibly tantalizing, mesmerizing novel. The detailed historical data is written in a way that makes for an enjoyable learning experience rather than just having each event presented in the context of the story. The English Civil War was a bloody, many times disorganized and often a confusing few years for both sides of the war. Lindsey Davis gives readers a reason to learn and a whole lot of book to relish.

Enter a very special contest at Romance Reviews Today

From Terrie:

What's in a Romance?

Since February is the month for romance, with Valentine’s Day and such ? What is the most romantic book you’ve ever read – and what scene in the book pushed it to the top of the romance scale for you. Send me the title of the book, and the text from the scene that just “did” if for you… I’ll draw one winner on Valentine’s Day for a very special prize – and post the titles and scenes submitted. Come on put on your thinking caps – which book – which hero or heroine – which scene melted your heart and made you sigh and say “Now that’s’ true love.”

Here is my pick:
KINGDOM OF DREAMS by Judith McNaught:
In this scene we have the heroine, Jennifer Merrick Claymore, having fled to her room to avoid watching her husband destroy her kinsmen in a tournament. The hero’s brother, Stefan Westmoreland is determined she return the tournament and watch her husband Royce, The Duke of Claymore.

(excerpt from Kingdom of Dreams, Judith McNaught, Pocket Books, Copyright March 1989

“Her heart and mind ravaged by divided loyalty, she stood where she was, unable to see the field but able to hear what was happening. Based on the prolonged ugly jeering coming from the crowd – a sound that was becoming more pronounced at the end of each match –they weren’t getting much of a show from the loser of each match. Evidently her Scots weren’t even worth a bit of polite applause …”

She jumped as the door to her bedchamber was flung open and crashed into the wall. “Get your cloak,” Stefan Westmoreland snapped ominously, “you’re coming back to that field with me if I have to drag you there!”

“I’m not going back,” Jennifer countered, turning to the window again. “I have no stomach for cheering while my husband batters my family to pieces, or ---“

Stefan grabbed her shoulders and spun her around, his voice like a savage whiplash: “I’ll tell you what’s happening! My brother is out there on that field dying! He swore he’d not raise his hand against your kinsmen and, the moment they realized that during the tournament, your precious kinsmen massacred him!” he said between his teeth, shaking her. “They tore him to pieces in the tournament! And now he’s jousting – Do you hear that crowd jeering? They’re jeering him! He’s so badly injured; I don’t think he knows any more when he’s been unhorsed. He thought he’d be able to outmaneuver them in the jousts, but he can’t, and fourteen more Scots have challenged him.”

Jenny stared at him, her pulse beginning to race like a maddened thing, but her body was rooted to the floor, as if she was trying to run in a nightmare.
“Jennifer” he said hoarsely, “Royce is letting them kill him.” His hands bit painfully into her arms, but his voice broke with anguish. “He is out there on that field, dying for you. He killed your brother and he’s paying ---“He broke off as Jennifer tore free from his grip and started running ….

Okay, you’re wondering where the romantic scene is? Is there anything more romantic than man willing to sacrifice his pride – his very life to prove his love? “sigh”. The scene outlined above left me in tears the first time I read it – and the story is one of my all time favorite historical romances. And I can honestly say in the dozen times I’ve re-read the book – I never walk away dry-eyed. Without a doubt one of the best romances ever written.

So that’s my favorite romance – and what I consider a very powerful scene in the book. What’s yours?

Send your entry to :

Happy Reading

Series Romance

San Francisco, California – Present Day

Four months ago, Jason Reagert and Lauren Presley turned their business friendship into something more with a quickie one night in Lauren’s office. They both knew there wasn’t a future between them, as Jason was leaving town to live in San Francisco. Shift to present day, and he’s currently in the midst of a big deal with a client, and any improper actions on his part could make him lose the job. However, he learns from a friend that Lauren is visibly pregnant. There’s no question of his not being the father, and he will do anything to make sure he’s a part of his child’s life. But Lauren isn’t about to change her life in New York City to accommodate his desires.

The months since Jason left have been a tumble of emotions and financial hardship for Lauren. Due to her bad case of morning sickness, she had to take time off from the company she owns, only to learn later that a trusted employee ripped her off. Now on the brink of bankruptcy and the impending birth, she’s at her wit’s end. Then, Jason shows up on her doorstep, demanding that she come with him to San Francisco. Lauren can’t see a future for them, so their spending two weeks together won’t help. But Jason offers Lauren a deal she can’t refuse: in exchange for her coming to California, he’ll give her the money to infuse into her failing business. The attraction is still there between Jason and Lauren. Can she keep him at arm’s length, because to emotionally commit to a man could mean heartache?

Catherine Mann has penned a powerful and emotional tale with BOSSMAN’S BABY SCANDAL. Neither Lauren nor Jason had the perfect childhood, but both managed to rise above it all to be independent and successful. They worked together in New York City and became friends, then one night, things turned passionate. Lauren figured she’d get around to telling Jason about the baby, but with her morning sickness and business problems, time flew. She’s held off telling anyone about her pregnancy for fear she’d lose business, and afraid her family would learn. Then Jason returns and seems bent on forcing Lauren to uproot her life and move to San Francisco, but she has no intention of getting that close to him.

Jason feels the pressure of dealing with a huge client contract and Lauren’s pregnancy. When it becomes clear that he needs to bring Lauren into the fold of his business life, he decides that marriage is the only way to proceed. She resists, of course, which only adds to the tension between them in BOSSMAN’S BABY SCANDAL. Add in the sexual sparks which smolder into an inferno; being under the same roof for this couple makes for some sizzling reading.

Jason and Lauren are an intricate, well-rounded couple who have a lot to work through before they can find their happily-ever-after. Readers will watch as they both grow and change from what they were four months ago into a couple learning to take issues on together. I’m awarding BOSSMAN’S BABY SCANDAL one of RRT’s Perfect 10s because it is a book I hated to see end. Yes, I wanted them happy, but I wanted to see more of Lauren and Jason. They are an interesting and intriguing couple. Since this is the first book in the Kings of the Boardroom series, I’m hoping we’ll see more of Lauren and Jason. If not, maybe Ms. Mann can bring them back in one of her future books. :)

If you had to pick up one book for some pure reading enjoyment, then I highly recommend you make BOSSMAN’S BABY SCANDAL your choice.
