Spotlight Review: THE UNTAMED BRIDE by Stephanie Laurens

THE UNTAMED BRIDE - Stephanie Laurens
The Black Cobra Quartet, Book 1
Avon Books
ISBN-13: 978-0-06-179514-5
November 2009
Regency Romance

India and England - 1822

Is there anything better than a handsome soldier-cum-spy with deep pockets and a blazing desire to bring down those who would commit evil? Well, yes. Four such men would be infinitely superior, and in this brilliant new quartet from Stephanie Laurens, we meet the men who are determined to bring down the Black Cobra, the man behind numerous atrocities in India threatening both the Indian people and the Crown’s very profitable financial interests there. The first to have his story told is Colonel Derek “Del” Delborough.

Seven long years spent serving in India should have prepared Del for anything, but when he and his comrades take on the task of defeating the Black Cobra, he never imagined getting tangled up with an opinionated, wild, and altogether too irresistible woman on the way home to England with a letter that may very well end the Black Cobra’s machinations.

Deliah Duncannon has spent much of the last decade in Jamaica where she strove to overcome her more primitive, unruly self, the one that caused her “great scandal” and forced her move far away. She believes she’s become a much more restrained lady in that time, which should please her parents immensely. But then she meets Del, the retired soldier who is supposed to accompany her home, and finds herself dragged (not altogether unwillingly) into the middle of an escapade that could change the world, or at least, her and Del’s world, forever.

It doesn’t take long for Del to realize there’s only one woman suited to becoming his UNTAMED BRIDE, but finding Deliah and having her in such danger because of him offends every protective instinct he possesses. If only he could hide her away somewhere, but Deliah is nothing if not just as determined, intelligent and passionate as he is, and she’ll have none of it. A situation the reader can only be grateful for because if they’d separated, how would they discover a love that seems destined to burn forever and will help to bring down the evil Black Cobra?

Captain Rafe Carstairs, Major Logan Monteith and Major Gareth Hamilton (whose story, THE ELUSIVE BRIDE, arrives in February 2010) are Del’s fellow soldiers and friends, each of whom we meet briefly in the beginning of the book. Along with them, other important secondary characters hail from The Cynsters and The Bastion Club tales. And then, of course, we have some not so admirable citizens, namely Roderick Ferrar, the English gentleman believed to be the Black Cobra; his compatriots, Alex and Daniel; and his aide, Larkins. If indeed Roderick is the man Del and his fellows are out to capture, he’ll be a tremendous foe given that he is the second (and favorite) son of a very powerful man to whom the king himself owes favors, and of course, would have the aid of cultists who have no fear of dying.

As a reader who loves to entertain visions of favorite characters and what their future might look like when the “happily ever after” begins, I have a definite fondness for Stephanie Laurens and the way she ties all of her books together by having them inhabit the same world. Past heroes and heroines have a habit of turning up or just being mentioned briefly throughout her various series. One of the nice things in this book (besides the obvious, the adventure filled romance) is the compendium included in the back outlining the various family trees and books found in her Regency series and some answers to common questions readers may have.

If you like strong, honorable men, daring action, and spirited, clever women who know what they want and go after it, you’re sure to enjoy Del and Deliah’s tale as well as the ones that follow. So what are you waiting for? Stop by your favorite brick and mortar or online store and get your copy of THE UNTAMED BRIDE today.

Book Giveaway: LOVE A YOUNGER MAN by Shelby Reed and Madison Hayes

Love a Younger Man - Shelby Reed and Madison Hayes
Ellora's Cave TPB
Out now!

A Fine Work of Art By Shelby Reed
At thirty-six, university art professor Elizabeth Gilstrom finds herself facing a bleak, lonely future when her husband leaves her for his young medical assistant. After giving up her own career as an artist a decade before, Elizabeth has nothing to show for their ten-year marriage…only the faded memory of a paintbrush's weight in her hand, an empty bed, and an empty heart.

She's still reeling from shock and devastation when graduate student Boone McCrea walks into her office...and into her bed. Boone might only be twenty-four, but he is, quite simply, one of the most attractive men Elizabeth has ever seen, a work of art that stirs wild sensations she has long repressed.

Zeke's Hands By Madison Hayes
Thirty-something Sara fights her attraction to younger co-worker Zeke Rutherford, but she has a case of lust that just won't go away — no matter how desperately she struggles to ignore it. Zeke may be too young…too tall…too everything, but her traitorous sex drive couldn't care less.

Zeke has the distinct impression Sara Walker has no idea exactly how hot she is. She may try to treat him like a kid, but he figures that won't last long after she gets a taste of him. Sara Walker is going down, he's decided. On him.

Intent on conquest, at first Zeke overlooks Sara's reckless behavior. But when he's hanging from a crane in the middle of an electrical storm, he begins to learn the troubling truth about Sara. The woman is reckless to the point of no return. And when Schueller Engineering is offered a project in bomb-torn Iraq, guess who's the first to volunteer?

Zeke races against time to discover the cause of Sara's irresponsible disregard for danger, before she takes it too far and he loses her for good. He's determined to work his way into this woman's life and prove to her that her heart is safe…in Zeke's hands.

This will be easy.... No questions or situations. :D  Just post away and I'll pull a winner on Sunday night!!!!

A Perfect 10: COMING UNDONE by Lauren Dane

A Perfect 10
Berkley Heat Trade Paperback
ISBN: 978-0-425-23270-5
January 2010
Erotic Contemporary Romance

Seattle, Washington - Present Day

Since moving into the quiet Seattle neighborhood, Elise Sorenson has spent quite a few nights fantasizing about the bad-boy biker who lives across the street. She has no room in her life for a man right now, and no desire for a relationship, but it’s nice to know that after the hell she’s been through that her libido is still alive. When a car runs into her neighbor on the street, Elise uses her first-aid knowledge to help and gets her first up-close look at the sexy man, which only fuels her fantasies more.

The little girl he’s seen across the street leads Brody Brown to the assumption that a new family has moved in and, while the mother is definitely good looking, Brody’s not about to mess with a married woman. It’s not until he thanks her for her aid after his accident that Brody realizes that Elise is a widow, and now he can’t seem to get her out of his mind. A second meeting, which leads to a dinner invite from her almost seven year-old daughter, Rennie, only has Brody more intrigued, and the kiss that follows is proof enough for him that there will be something between him and the beautiful Elise. Even so, he’s still a little shocked when she readily agrees to a “friends with benefits” arrangement, and is more than happy to abide by her ground rules.

While the sexual relationship between Brody and Elise happens quickly and is hot enough to singe the fingers, it’s the slow build-up of a deeper relationship that makes COMING UNDONE such a treat to read. The large, Harley-riding owner of a tattoo parlor, Brody definitely gives off the impression of a bad boy. However, he’s also the man who, at seventeen, put aside his own dreams to raise his younger siblings after their parents’ deaths, encouraged them in their own artistic endeavors, and was devastated at the loss of his niece. Readers learn right away that Elise survived an abusive relationship, and though it made her stronger, she still struggles with what she sees as her failures and the mistakes she’s made. She enjoys her time with Brody, but is too afraid of making another mistake to truly trust in a relationship.

Along with the strong romantic element to the story, COMING UNDONE is also about family. Brody’s rock-star brother Adrian is in and out of the story, visiting his home between tours. His sister, Erin, (featured in Ms. Dane’s book LAID BARE) is settling into life with her two men, Todd and Ben, and befriends Elise right away. The Brown family has a close-knit group of friends who quickly accept Elise among them, and Elise’s parents arrive and make themselves at home with her new life. Not to be forgotten is Elise’s precocious daughter Rennie, who steals quite a few scenes.

A fabulous blend of sizzlingly erotic and sweetly romantic, COMING UNDONE is a book that I found impossible to put down, which is why I’m awarding it a Perfect 10. COMING UNDONE will definitely make it onto my keeper shelf, and hopefully onto yours.

Spotlight Review: TAMING THE HIGHLAND BRIDE - Lynsay Sands

ISBN: 978-0-06-134478-7
January 2010
Historical Romance

Medieval England and Scotland

Merewen Stewart’s betrothed is finally returning from the crusades and wants Merewen to come to his home and marry him. At least that is what her father and brothers tell her. Merry is happy to do so; she is tired of dealing with her drunken father and brothers who want only to drink whiskey. They depend on her to do everything in the castle.

Alexander d’Aumesbery has been reluctant to meet Merry after hearing that she is a shrew. While he was gone the past three years, his father died, and he finds his home in disarray with most of the servants gone and his step-mother in charge. Before he can leave to visit his recently married sister, the blacksmith is called to pull a tooth that has been bothering him. The blacksmith refuses to pull the tooth until Alex drinks a pitcher of whiskey to dull the pain. Of course, that is when Merry enters the picture and believes her betrothed to be a drunken lout like her father and brothers.

What is Alex to think when Merry takes over running his castle and his men as she did for her father? He hopes to prove to her that he is not a drunk, but what can he do when everyone is toasting the bride and groom on their wedding night and his new in-laws insist he join them? And what is causing the illness sweeping his castle, and who is attempting to hurt or kill him?

TAMING THE HIGHLAND BRIDE is a very entertaining story. Readers will laugh at Merry’s new mother-in-law’s explanation of what happens in the bridal bed, and will laugh again at what actually happens! Merry is a take-charge woman yearning to have a better life, while Alex tumbles into lust for his new bride. The romance steams and sizzles between them. Readers will find TAMING THE HIGHLAND BRIDE is an easy to read book filled with romance and adventure when Alex is attacked, and Merry ready to protect him. It is well plotted with good dialogue, good pacing, and a story that readers will not want to put down.

Book Giveaway: RIPTIDE by Margaret Carroll

RIPTIDE by Margaret Carroll

Out now from Avon

RIPTIDE is a novel of psychological intrigue set in New York’s sizzling summer community of the Hamptons, where a wealthy young widow is about to be named a 'person of interest’ in the drowning death of her husband.

Christina Cardiff, whose stay in rehab has been cut short, discovers she must fight to regain custody of her son while struggling to maintain her newfound sobriety and find a way through the cloud of intrigue surrounding her husband’s shocking death.

In the novel’s chilling twists, Christina pieces together the secrets of her husband’s final weeks and days, and the role played in their marriage by her dark and mysterious lover, Danny Cisco. The answers threaten her future, her sanity and even her life . . .

She couldn't shake the feeling that snakes were slithering around her bare feet. She ran, leaving the relative shelter of the dunes behind, emerging onto the open expanse that was the strand.

Normally, the strand stretched forty feet, from the leading edge of the dune to the tide's edge.

Not tonight. Her feet landed in water just steps below the dune.

The waves shouldn't be breaking this close to shore

The wind and the rain made it too dark to see.

Breathing heavy, Christina retreated a few steps into the soft heavy sand at the base of the dune behind her.
The beach moved and groaned with shifting shadows and wind and bits of white flashing at the line of breakers, close by in the dark.

Too close.

Cold spray flew through the air, coating her face, stinging her eyes.

The beach was alive with sound and wind and blowing, twisting sand.

A shape emerged, looming large and dark.

Fear gripped the base of her neck and fired through her nerve endings like an electric current.

What book hero would you like to wake up in bed with? ;-)

Post away, one entry per person. I'll pick a winner Sunday night. Good luck.

Congrats to LAURIE -- she wins a copy of the book BLAZING BEDTIME STORIES by authors Tori Carrington and Tawny Weber!

RRT Newsletter posted - Volune 1, Issue 2 January 2010

Volume 1, Issue 2 , January 2010

By Terrie Figueroa

Well, 2010 is certainly off to a chilly start, at least in the U.S. Freezing temperatures back east are keeping people cooped up and hopefully reading a good book. While we aren’t freezing – the West coast is chilly this year. Damp, gray and cold, but no rain … at least in this neck of the woods. Since it’s too cold to do much outside that isn’t necessary I’ve decided now is a good time to add to my TBR (to be read) pile. Not that I need anything else on it – but hey a girl can never be too rich, too thin or have too many books. And since rich and thin are elusive things – I’ll dive right into the books. So far just from what staff has submitted reviews on I already have (blank) books to add to my shopping list: JANE BITE’S BACK by Michael Thomas Ford. Now I have to admit when this came in I was not too sure about it – but after reading Robin’s spectacular review – it’s on my list for the month. DUTY, DESIRE AND THE DESERT KING by Jane Porter. Okay Sheikh books are not my thing – but I adore Porter’s work and Deborah’s review convinced me to give this Desert Sheikh a try J

THE TEMPTATION OF THE NIGHT JASMINE and THE BETRAYAL OF THE BLOOD LILY by Lauren Willig. Normally historical non –romance don’t interest me, but both of these books sound intriguing – and I do enjoy a good mystery – so I’m adding them to my list. CHALICE OF THE ROSES, an anthology with some of my very favorite authors; Jo Beverley, Mary Jo Putney, Karen Harbaugh and Barbara Samuels. I love anthologies they are perfect reads for when you don’t have time to read an entire book but can set aside time for a short story. And with these four authors writing – any single one is sure to be a winner. And it goes without saying that BLOOD SINS by Kay Hooper and STREET GAMES by Christine Feehan are on that shopping list – I never miss books by either of these top notch authors.

So, while I’m curled up with hot chocolate, a blanket and a stack of good books, what will you be reading?

Happy Reading

Spotlight Review: DIVINE MISDEMEANORS by Laurell K. Hamilton

Merry Gentry Series, Book 8
Ballantine Books (Hardcover)
ISBN: 978-0-345-49596-9
December 2009
Urban Fantasy

Los Angeles, California

It took a lot of courage but very little thought for Princess Meredith Gentry of the Sidhe to give up the Unseelie Throne. She chose love over a crown, and she's not looking back. Now, settled in L.A. with the men she loves at her side, Merry worries about getting everyone acclimated to their new lives and enough money to support an ever expanding household. Oh, and learning that not even the Sidhe are saved from morning sickness.

Called in to a crime scene for her preternatural assistance, Merry is witness to one of the worse atrocities she's ever seen. Even worse, the victims are demi-fey and supposedly immortal. A police investigation might just be enough to take her mind off of the familial drama overtaking her household. A woman's work is never done.

The next segment in Merry's life and adventures begins as she closes the door firmly on the Seelie and Unseelie Thrones and moves out into the human world in DIVINE MISDEMEANORS. Unfortunately, her new home brings along its own challenges, not to mention that just because she has renounced the Sidhe world, it doesn't mean that they're as willing to let her go. Readers will be happy to enjoy the return of Frost, not to mention that some familiar characters are getting more screen time than in previous years. I must say I was disappointed to see one of my favorite secondary characters be a bit more whiny, once he had the stage and the freedom, than one would expect of a former god. I hope to see him evolve with time and look forward to seeing him get his comeuppance in the future.

Merry may not be Queen, but she definitely has her own court, one that is more family than courtiers. This new chapter in her life looks to be as intriguing, adventurous and exciting as in the previous seven books of the series. Laurell K. Hamilton has penned another page-turner, and waiting for the next book isn't going to be any easier.

Spotlight Review: A MATTER OF CLASS by Mary Balogh

Vanguard Press (Hardcover)
ISBN: 978-1-59315-554-4
January 2010
Short Historical Romance

Regency England

Mr. Bernard Mason made a fortune in coal, moved south and bought an estate in Wiltshire, hoping to set up as a gentleman. Mr. Mason's friendly overtures to his new neighbor, the Earl of Havercroft, were cruelly rebuffed however. Havercroft forbade his family and dependents to even recognize the existence of any Mason. And that's the way things remained for thirty years. In that time, the Masons produced one child, their son Reginald, who was sent to the best schools and was otherwise reared to be a gentleman. At twenty-five, Reggie's wealth and good looks, coupled with friends among his former school mates, have given him some acceptance by the ton, and he has been taking advantage of that wholeheartedly in the past year. What with Reggie's gambling debts and the expense of always dressing in the height of fashion, Bernard believes it's time to crack down on his son. And it looks as though the perfect chance has come for Reggie to marry into the upper class, and redress old hurts as well, for Havercroft's daughter just ruined herself by attempting to elope with her father's coachman.

Havercroft finds himself in a bind what with bad investments and huge expenses, and now the marriage of his daughter to the wealthy (and odiferous) Marquess of Illingsworth is a no-go after her ruin. The earl is forced to accept a connection to the detested Mason.

But what of the two young people? Reggie faces being cut off without a penny if he doesn't offer for Lady Annabelle. Lady Annabelle, in turn, faces being sent to her father's farthest estate to earn her keep as a chambermaid if she doesn't accept Reggie's offer. Really, they have no choice at all...have they? The points of view alternate between Reggie's and Annabelle's with no head-hopping confusion, and we are treated to several enlightening visits to the past.

What a charming and engaging (pardon the pun) tale! Not only do Reggie and Annabelle enchant with their story, but the families (beautifully contrasted) are arresting as well. The fathers, you see, are not really evil villains; Havercroft is probably no worse than the majority of his peers, while Mason senior wants better for his son. The mothers also add to the whole.

Whether called a short novel or a long novella, at 190 pages A MATTER OF CLASS offers solid entertainment by the ever-popular Mary Balogh. Her website,, lists more good things to come, both original work and the reissue of some of her backlist. You can never go wrong with a Balogh book.

Happy New Year

2009 has seen a lot of changes at Romance Reviews Today. We have lost some of our long time reviewers due to time constraints and personal issues. Several of our reviewers have suffered unexpected personal losses this year and I myself have dealt with some unexpected and time consuming personal issues. But for me, through the entire year, the staff at Romance Reviews Today has been a rock. Steadfast, reliable and despite their own personal issues has continued to produce top quality reviews for our readers.

Patti Fischer has done an incredible job with the RRT Blog this year and we have seen readership of the blog grow. Scheme, Patti and Mo continue to offer up fun and sometimes wicked chats for our readers to participate in several nights a week. If you haven’t been to a chat recently be sure to check out the schedule or sign up to the RRTChatters group where all chats are announced.

AS the New Year approaches Romance Reviews Today will continue – hopefully on a more consistent basis than this past year. We will continue to offer you top notch reviews as well as author interviews for our readers, and will be opening up new promotional opportunities for authors as the year progresses.

Additionally, we will be adding a monthly feature article beginning in April. We of course will focus on books in many of the articles, however, we also want to talk about what you want to know – or are interested in. Is there a topic you’d like to see featured on Romance Reviews Today? Drop me an email with your suggestions.

Many of you have been readers of Romance Reviews Today since its inception in October of 2000 – yes it’s hard to believe we are entering our 10th year on the web. The time seems to have flown by and it seems like only yesterday were the new kid on the block with only a handful of reviews to offer up. Since then we have grown and at one point with a staff of 30 reviewers produced more than 200 reviews a month. A pace that was not possible to sustain.

In 2006 we launched our sister site RRTErotic and that site was hugely successful for several years. However, due to time constraints, mine and the reviewers, RRTErotic will officially close in June 2010, and in fact will not be updated directly at RRTErotic again. There are a number of reasons for this. Primarily because maintaining two separate websites is time consuming, and at this point not practical. We will however, continue to offer erotic reviews as a part of Romance Reviews Today. Links to the old RRTErotic website will continue to work through the expiration of the hosting service in June 2010. As of June 2010 all reviews posted at RRTErotic will be available via email, and hopefully online in a simple database. (If anyone has suggestions on a fast and simple database that can be incorporated into Romance Reviews Today – email me -- please!)
