Kirsten Imani Kasai is the author of Ice Song and you can find more about how to purchase your copy by visiting her website:

1. Tell us about your newest release.

Ice Song is very much a “down the rabbit hole” fantasy adventure, wherein a single event cracks the facade of a hidden world. In the course of that journey, Sorykah begins to accept the darker and unwanted aspects of herself. This lonely single mother wants love and acceptance, but first she has to learn to love and accept who she really is."Sorykah Minuit has just two jobs aboard an ice-drilling submarine: meeting her quota and keeping her identity a secret. It’s no easy trick because when Sorykah’s frightened, she changes into a man—parts and all. Even worse, she suffers from a memory disorder that leaves her clueless about the activities of her other half. When a wealthy madman abducts her children to use in his dreadful experiments, timid Sorykah and her male alter ego, Soryk, must cross icy wastes and a primeval forest to reclaim them and extract her revenge. The world through which Soryk/ah travels is both familiar and surreal. Environmental degradation and genetic mutation run amok; humans have become distorted into animals, and animal bodies mask a wild humanity. But it is also a world of unexpected beauty and wonder, where kindness and love endure amidst the ruins."

2. When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

I have always written and illustrated stories. When I was little, I created very elaborate storylines with my toys and dolls. I had a cassette recorder and would recreate books that I read, complete with sound effects and character voices. As I got older, I created hand-drawn magazines. During my sophomore year of high school, my teacher, Mr. Hicken, gave us a short story assignment. I ended up requesting an extension because my story was so long, and that was the first time I began to think of writing as something real and meaningful, rather than my own personal form of play. At 18, a friend asked me what I wanted to do with my life and I had a very clear vision of myself as a career author. That's what sealed the deal for me, and I've been working toward that goal ever since.

3. Where do you get your information or ideas for your stories?

I get most of my ideas from the news, especially research in the fields of science, nature and medicine. I might have only one idea, scene or aspect of a character or story, but once I open myself up to the storytelling process, it's like turning on a TV or radio and tapping into this channel where my characters exist and are already living their own lives.

4. What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?

Wow, I wish I had one just for this question! I used to have a whole preparation routine in the early days, but I taught myself to access my storytelling headspace in any environment or situation. The muse is fickle. She has to be trained and leashed if she's to be cooperative. I do prefer to work at night when my schedule allows, and I've been listening to the same few ambient music albums for nearly 20 years.

5. What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your books?

The most surprising thing has been the whole journey and experience of publishing, from agent acceptance, to a publishing offer to seeing the book on shelves. It can be very surreal. I've been tremendously appreciative of how easily readers accept the idea of a Trader, someone who can completely change genders, and the complications such an ability brings.

6. What authors or friends influenced you in helping you become a writer?

I have a quirky list of influences. Anais Nin, Marguerite Duras, George Sand, Mary Shelley, Angela Carter, Marilyn French. I love all folk and fairy tales, and I was an avid reader of Peanuts and Donald Duck/Uncle Scrooge comics when I was young.

7. What does your family think about your career as a published author?

They are all tremendously excited for me and incredibly supportive and proud of my accomplishments.

8. Can you tell us about what’s coming up next for you writing wise?

The sequel, Tattoo, picks up right where Ice Song ends as Soryk/ah's relationships with her various lovers develop and deepen. Tattoo will be published in 2010. Now I'm writing the third and final book about Sorykah and her children called Saudade, which is a Portuguese word that means a nostalgic longing for something or someone that is gone and cannot be recovered. I'm also putting together an anthology of erotic horror short stories.

A Perfect 10: DON'T TEMPT ME by Loretta Chase

DON’T TEMPT ME – Loretta Chase
A Perfect 10
Avon Books
ISBN: 978-8-06-163266-2
July 2009
Historical Romance

London – 1818

When indolent Lucien Charles Vincent de Grey, the eleventh Duke of Marchmont, hears that Lord Lexham’s daughter, abducted twelve years ago in Egypt at the age of twelve, has returned, he doesn’t believe it. Marchmont is not someone who goes out of his way for any man or woman, but the one person he will always help is Lord Lexham. He will not allow any imposter to bamboozle the family. He is so convinced the woman is an imposter, he places a thousand pound bet that he can prove it before the day is out. But when he arrives at Lexham’s place in Berkeley Square, he recognizes Zoe. While asking him to marry her, an invitation he skillfully declines, Zoe informs him, while still a virgin, she knows all the arts of pleasuring a man.

Zoe risked her life to escape from the harem. She didn’t realize the shame she would bring on her family by coming home as a dishonored woman. Already rumor runs through all the social classes of London about the ‘harem girl,’ and ‘snake charmer.’ Rather than be ostracized to some far away family property, Zoe is prepared to build a new life in Paris or Vienna. She has jewelry to pay her way, but that is an option of last resort. Zoe never wants to feel like a prisoner in her own home, trapped and never free to live her life — she had twelve years of that. However, Marchmont, for her father's sake, promises he can re-establish her reputation.

DON’T TEMPT ME is a delightful read with unusual characters. Zoe, who learned in the harem how to pleasure a man and how to manipulate masters, eunuchs, and servants, makes a most unusual Regency miss. She is not about to live her life on anyone else’s terms, not even those of her family or Marchmont. Everyone underrates her, which leads to some interesting situations, even a few dangerous ones, for both her and Marchmont. While Marchmont has many faults, the reader will fall for his innate honesty and honor. Since both hero and heroine lack almost any inhibition, the sexual tension is pronounced. Interesting and well-defined secondary characters add to this story’s charm. These characters and the unusual situations they fall into will keep readers turning pages.

Ms. Chase is adept at leading readers down the (anything but prim) rose path, earning DON’T TEMPT ME a Perfect 10.

Spotlight Review: BENDING THE RULES by Susan Andersen

BENDING THE RULES - Susan Andersen
Sisterhood Diaries, Book 2
ISBN: 978-0-373-77393-0
July 2009
Contemporary Romance

Seattle, Washington - Present Day

The first time Poppy Calloway and Detective Jason de Sanges met, it definitely was not love at first sight. He was not thrilled to have been pulled off of a “real” case in order to investigate some rich women’s idea of a crime, and Poppy and her best friends, Ava and Jane, were mad that the police were not taking a break-in seriously. Lust at first sight on the other hand....

When the detective shows up at a meeting to discuss how to handle the three teens caught tagging local businesses, Poppy’s pulse rate speeds up once again. However, just like the first time they met, it doesn’t take long for Poppy’s pulse to be racing for an entirely different reason. While the business owners agree not to press charges against the teens, and to allow them to clean up their graffiti at their own expense, thanks to Detective de Sanges’s “this is how teenagers become gang-bangers” lecture, the group nixes her idea to allow the teens to create a mural. Just how can a free spirit like Poppy be interested in a by-the-book stiff like de Sanges?

The men in the de Sanges family have a long history of incarceration, with the exception of Jason. In his opinion, it is only his strict adherence to the rules that has kept him from following in the shackled footsteps of his brother, father and grandfather. The fact that Poppy’s connection to the mayor’s office has given her and her friends special treatment angers him almost as much as the uncontrollable attraction he feels towards her. Being forced to work with her and her teenage delinquents shows Jase an unexpected side to Poppy, and he begins to question his pre-conceived notions about her. But he has no intention of getting involved with her, no matter how tempting she is.

Second up in the Sisterhood Diaries series, BENDING THE RULES is a story about opposites attracting. Poppy’s first years were spent in a commune; she’s a peace-loving, artistic woman, who believes in giving back to the community, and loves working with teenagers. Jase is a rigid, controlled man, who takes the “narrow” part of straight and narrow a little too seriously. Considering that he was headed towards a life of crime until a police officer stepped in and turned his life around, I found Jase’s initial hard-line attitude about three juveniles who had never before been in trouble a bit unusual. His turn-around is understandable, if grudging, and when he starts to give both Poppy and the teens a chance, Jase is in for a couple of surprises.

The first book, CUTTING LOOSE, centers quite a bit on the renovation of the Wolcott mansion that Poppy, Ava, and Jane inherited, in addition to the romance between Jane and Dev. However, BENDING THE RULES focuses on Jase and Poppy with a side story featuring one of the teens, Cory Capinelli. Cory and her mother moved from Philadelphia after her father was shot by gang members in retaliation for sending one of its members to jail. Now, Cory finds herself in a similar situation, and is not quite willing to trust the police or anyone else with the information she has. This secondary plot dovetails nicely with the relationship between Poppy and Jase, and inadvertently helps things along.

An engaging story with likable characters, humor, and some sexy scenes, BENDING THE RULES should not be missed.

RWA Contest

Don't forget the RITA's Picks Contest:

A Perfect 10: INSTANT GRATIFICATION by Jill Shalvis

A Perfect 10
Kensington Brava
ISBN: 978-0-7582-3125-3
July 2009
Contemporary Romance

Sierra Mountains, near Lake Tahoe, California – Present Day

Dr. Emma Sinclair was born in Wishful and spent the first years of her life there until her parents separated and she was whisked off to New York City by her mother. Now Emma’s father is recovering from a heart attack and needs her to run his practice until he is better. Not only are things different in Wishful from New York City, but the people haven’t accepted her, especially Stone Wilder, one of the brothers operating Wilder Adventures nearby. Stone thinks Emma is a prissy, cold woman, while she thinks he’s an arrogant, good for nothing louse. Yet, the sexual sparks fly hot between them as they can’t keep their hands off each other. But Emma is not into relationships and plans to leave once her father can return to work. Any thought of dating between Stone and her has to be crazy when the couple is absolutely wrong for each other, right?

Stone is not apologetic about his past experiences with women. Emma is attractive and she’s hot, but her inability to let anyone get close to her is a sure sign of trouble for someone who wants to get to know her better. He tries, but instead, Emma battles Stone, pushing him away and not even trying to get along with the people of Wishful—or him. As their unconventional “relationship” grows, the more he wants her. And the more he wants her, the more Emma wants to put distance between them. Yet, opposites do attract…

There should be a warning label across the front of INSTANT GRATIFICATION that says “Warning: Be careful when reading a Jill Shalvis book in public as you will be observed laughing out loud.” I ended up following that edict as several times I caught myself giggling out loud. The characters are likeable, and they meld together nicely, with snappy dialogue that will keep you glued to the book.

Though a successful doctor, Emma is full of insecurities that date back to her parents’ divorce and being jerked away from the father she loved. She could’ve chosen to not return, but she took the chance to help her father. Despite the lack of respect from the people of Wishful and the isolation it brings, not to mention the lack of the Thai food she misses, well, Emma can’t wait to leave. Even as she locks horns with Stone, their sizzling chemistry scorches the pages. Will she take the plunge and finally give her heart to him?

Stone, on the other hand, has the motto that life is just one big adventure. A fling with the pretty Emma is just what the doctor needs to unwind, and he’s more than willing to provide. Of course, deep down lies a man with a good heart who’s there for others, but is too modest to admit these traits. She just can’t see it. (Note to Emma: If you don’t want Stone, I’ll take him off your hands…) Like the changing seasons of the Sierra Mountains, their relationship blows hot and cold. In the end, will they come full circle for a future together?

Readers will get a chance to catch up with on Annie, Nick, T.J., Chuck and other characters from INSTANT ATTRACTION (Feb. 2009), but INSTANT GRATIFICATION can be read as a standalone. However, since I loved reading both books, I recommend both. Next up is T.J.’s story, and I can’t wait.

INSTANT GRATIFICATION is smart, funny, sassy and one of the best reads of 2009 and richly deserves a Perfect 10 designation from Romance Reviews Today. Put this one at the very top of your to-be-read pile today.

A Perfect 10: RED'S HOT HONKY-TONK BAR by Pamela Morsi

A Perfect 10
ISBN: 978-0-7783-2729-5
July 2009
Women’s Fiction

San Antonio, Texas – Present Day

Forty six year old Red Cullens owns Red’s Hot Honky-Tonk Bar, a fun place for patrons to hang out, drink beer, and listen to music. Red enjoys her life, especially now that she is having a fling with Cam, who plays the fiddle. So what if he is fifteen years younger? It is a shock to get a phone call from her daughter, Bridge, serving in the military. Bridge’s ex-mother-in-law had a stroke, and Bridge needs Red to take care of her two children until she can make other arrangements. Red panics. What does she know about caring for children? But there is no one else, so Red picks up nine-year-old Olivia and six-year-old Daniel and squeezes them into her tiny apartment located over the bar. Red hardly recognizes the children -– she is not close to her daughter or grandkids. Although she tries to push Cam aside (now that he knows she is old enough to be a grandmother), he cares about her and sticks around.

Olivia and Daniel like Cam but treat Red like a pariah. Red is uncomfortable and doesn’t know how to interact with children. Cam invites her to use his house while she has the children because it is in a good neighborhood with a school nearby. As secrets are revealed, Red and Cam draw closer, and Red begins to realize her blessings.

In Pamela Morsi’s usual manner, she writes a fabulous novel to tear at your heartstrings or to make you laugh. It takes a while to peel the layers from Red to find the woman beneath the beautiful red hair and the unkind words she uses to protect herself, to find a good person. Cam is a wonderful guy who is always there for her, is wonderful with children, and an all-around great fellow (almost too good!). The children are captivating secondary characters. Olivia is so protective of her little brother; Daniel curls into himself and speaks Spanish when he is in an uncomfortable situation.

I really hated to turn the last page of this heartfelt novel. What a wonderful story, beautifully written, with characters whom you will feel you know intimately by the end of the book. And if you shed a few tears, it will only be because your heart has been touched by this poignant tale. What else could I do but give it a Perfect 10 -– it is the best book I have read so far this year.

A Perfect 10: MY FORBIDDEN DESIRE by Carolyn Jewel

A Perfect 10
Grand Central's Forever
ISBN-10: 0446178241
ISBN-13: 978-0446178242
June 2009
Paranormal Romance

San Francisco, California – Present Day

Alexandrine Marit's life has just been turned upside down. Harsh, the brother she believed to be dead for the past ten years, shows up at her apartment door. He tells Alexandrine that she is in danger and that the only one who can keep her alive is Xia, a man too sexy for his own good.

Xia hates witches and would love nothing more than to kill Alexandrine instead of protect her. However, he is the one chosen to keep her safe from their enemies, so that is what he is going to do. This doesn't mean that he has to be nice to Alexandrine or hide the fact that he hates everything she stands for.

Alexandrine doesn't believe for one minute that someone wants to kill her and doesn't hesitate to tell Harsh that she can take care of herself. Before night falls, Alexandrine is forced to eat those words. She is attacked by people intent on killing her. But these are not your average humans...instead, they are monsters. Xia is able to protect her because underneath his human exterior, Xia is entirely UN-human!

All I can say is WOW! Ms. Jewel has truly penned a jewel with MY FORBIDDEN DESIRE. It has all of the features expected by true lovers of paranormal romances. The hero is a Harley riding, sexy bad boy who just so happens to be a demon. He hates Alexandrine with a passion that doesn't prove to be as strong as his attraction to her. Xia plays by no man's rules and doesn't care whom he has to kill to prove that he's not the type to play around with. Alexandrine is a gorgeous witch who doesn't know anything about the world Xia introduces her to. She realizes that Xia hates her, but this doesn't stop her from thinking that he is just her type.

Naturally, these instant enemies try hard to fight their attraction to each other. The pages of MY FORBIDDEN DESIRE fairly light up as Xia and Alexandrine's chemistry builds. I was so caught up in the story that I admit to actually blushing when Xia begins to pursue Alexandrine. Although he is a man of few words, he somehow knows just what to say and exactly how to say it! My heart melted when Xia finally realized the extent of his feelings for Alexandrine. There is just something about seeing such a tough character reformed by love.

Xia's 'friends' are all gorgeous and dangerous. Kynan Aijan is one of his friends, and he just made me shiver with dread. He is such a messed up character who is on the side of good, but still motivated by evil. Rasmus Kessler is absolutely evil, and is determined to track down Xia and Alexandrine for all of the wrong reasons. Carson Philips is another important character who doesn't actually make an appearance in MY FORBIDDEN DESIRE, but is mentioned quite a bit. Her story is told in MY WICKED ENEMY (August 2008), which is the first book in the series. I didn't read MY WICKED ENEMY, but I was able to easily follow MY FORBIDDEN DESIRE. However, I was so impressed with MY FORBIDDEN DESIRE that I am running to find a copy of MY WICKED ENEMY!

MY FORBIDDEN DESIRE is a true Perfect 10. The action is non-stop, and the characters, as well as their internal struggles, are entirely believable and engrossing. I didn't want the book to end because I was totally caught up in the world of fiends, mages, magehelds and demonhelds. Ms. Jewel's imagination has unleashed a paranormal novel with entirely fresh concepts and possibilities. MY FORBIDDEN DESIRE is a novel that I highly recommend.
