Spotlight Review - SPEED DEMON by Erin Lynn

Berkley Jam
ISBN-10: 0425223663
ISBN-13: 978-0425223666
November 2008
Young Adult Paranormal Fiction

Ohio – Present Day

Kenzie Sutcliffe takes up where she left off in DEMON ENVY. Having gained one very annoying but cute teen-aged demon boy in Levi when she accidentally opened a portal to the demon universe, Kenzie is torn between envy (which Levi feeds on) and attraction. Everybody else sees Levi as an amiable, responsible teen-aged boy, but Kenzie can see him as the demon he is, and it’s driving her crazy. Achieving success in closing the portal to the demon world only by driving the family minivan through the kitchen, thereby destroying both, earned her an extremely long, and to Kenzie, unfair punishment. Now it seems that another portal has opened, and Kenzie must figure out where it is and how to close it without much input from Levi, who is not allowed to tell her anything. Kenzie doesn’t know whether she wants to kiss Levi or knock him through the portal as it closes!

SPEED DEMON is the continuation of the story begun in DEMON ENVY. Written for the teen reader, it is a light, humorous tale, without any heavy angst. Kenzie is somewhat whiny, but likable, a very normal teenager. She loves her family and friends, and she likes Levi a lot. She is a good kid and wants to save Levi from his fate, being dragged back into the demon prison from which he escaped when she accidentally opened the first portal. Kenzie accepts her burden of becoming a demon slayer and her mission of saving Levi from his fate. SPEED DEMON has the overall feeling of a bridge novel, not too many new things are introduced, but it also felt like being a teenager all over again, spending hours on the phone discussing your adventures with your best friend. Teen readers are sure to enjoy SPEED DEMON.

Spotlight Review: THE CEO'S CHRISTMAS PROPOSITION by Merline Lovelace

Holidays Abroad, Book 1
Silhouette Desire #1905
ISBN-13: 978-0-373-76905-6
ISBN-10: 0-373-76905-9
November 2008
Short Series Romance

Germany and Austria ~ Present Day

Travel planner Devon McShay loves her job, but hates Christmas. So, when a few days before Christmas work has her waiting in a German airport to escort a client to his destination, the last thing she expects is to be greeted with a heart stopping kiss. Her client, CEO Cal Logan, has mistaken Devon for her fellow employee Sabrina. But the aftereffects of their kiss continue to linger even after they are suddenly stranded in Dresden by an ice storm. Devon knows going to bed with Cal is wrong. She can’t afford to get involved with a client, but the man is too damned hard to resist. When the power goes out, she suddenly has no choice when the warmest spot in the hotel is between the sheets with Cal.

His devil-may-care decision to pursue Devon might not be the wisest decision on his part, but Cal figures a little holiday fling is just what he wants for Christmas. Oh, he’ll get what he originally came for, an important financial deal, but when the city comes to a standstill during the storm, there’s not much to do but get to know the pretty travel consultant. And, keeping warm under the sheets is the best way to accomplish the task. However, will what happens in Dresden stay there, or will their affair continue on to Salzburg?

A holiday romance against the backdrop of Christmas in Germany and Austria fills the pages of THE CEO’S CHRISTMAS PROPOSITION. Devon makes it clear right from the start that she doesn’t like Christmas due to her parents usual battles during the holiday time and a bad marriage. And she’s only here right now because Sabrina fell ill and they needed a replacement right away. Meeting Cal has thrown her for a loop, and she can’t deny there’s something between them. She’s determined that she’s not going to fall for Cal, but will her resistance soon fail under his equally determined seduction?

Cal is used to being pursued by beautiful women; however, Devon makes it clear she’s not going to jump into bed with him at the drop of a hat. The resulting ice storm soon has her changing her mind, and now it’s up to him to also show her the delights of spending Christmas in Europe. Will their romance end when the holidays do? Will Devon discover that spending Christmas falling in love is the best thing to ever happen?

Filled with interesting cultural tidbits about Christmas in Germany and Austria, THE CEO’S CHRISTMAS PROPOSITION is a feel-good read to snuggle up with during the holiday season. Merline Lovelace’s prose has you feeling as if you’re right there in Dresden and Salzburg, experiencing the sounds and smells with Devon and Cal. Add in some smoking hot love scenes, and readers have a well rounded tale that is sure to please.

Start out your holiday reading right. Pick up your copy of THE CEO’S CHRISTMAS PROPOSITION.

A Perfect 10: THE KING'S DAUGHTER by Sandra Worth

A Perfect 10
Berkley Books
ISBN: 978-0-425-22144-0
December 2008
Historical Fiction

England -1470 to 1503

Elizabeth of York was born into a family in conflict. The eldest child of King Edward IV and Elizabeth Woodville, she knew early on in life that while her father adored her, her mother was more concerned with her sons and the throne. The opposite disposition of her manipulative, cold-blooded mother, Elizabeth knew from childhood that her future lay in marrying someone who would benefit her mother’s ambition. There are times when the growing family has to defend itself from rumor and invasion, but throughout it all, Elizabeth knows that her father’s love for them will prevail. When he dies suddenly, though, her world is turned upside down. What will happen to her two younger brothers as her mother tries to control their future, while her uncle Richard takes firm hold of the country, first in his nephew’s name, and then, after discovering the secrets that Edward and his common-born wife withheld from all, as king. Where does that leave Richard’s nieces and nephews? Can he be trusted?

Elizabeth is placed in Richard’s household and comes to know the new king and his wife better. She discovers his deep concern for the people of England and the laws that govern them. But most of all, Elizabeth sees the complete love he shares with his frail wife, Anne, and their young son. As an observer, Elizabeth is aware of the fragility of Richard’s throne. Margaret Beaufort’s son, Henry Tudor, is claiming the throne also, and, despite the slim thread of that claim, he has mustered support both in England and the continent. Richard must be in constant defense mode to protect his blood right as the last royal Plantagenet to rule his country. His brother’s sons have disappeared, making Richard the obvious culprit, despite what Elizabeth knows of the kind, caring man. One after another, heart-wrenching events throw Richard into a spin, even as Henry lands on English soil. At Richard’s death in battle, Elizabeth’s future becomes much too clear. She will be the new Queen of England.

As the wife of upstart Henry Tudor, Elizabeth is the lynchpin to his credibility. Always under the direct control and observation of his conniving, controlling mother, Elizabeth deals with everyday life dedicated to her children and to God, and always remembering Richard and his kindness and devotion to his family, friends, and country. It’s a somber existence that Elizabeth faces honestly and thoughtfully, for she has no say and no power in the running of her country, but her kindness and charity make her beloved of her people, even as they curse her husband and his mother.

THE KING’S DAUGHTER is another beautifully crafted and well-researched novel by Sandra Worth. Every time I pick up one of her books, I’m immediately immersed in the story and the characters she brings to life in such incredible detail. Elizabeth of York, while a tragic figure who endured much heartache in her life, was the daughter, sister, niece, wife, and mother of a king, making her place in history unique. Her people called her Elizabeth the Good for her love for them, and this first person account of her is a wonderful tribute to the woman who was Henry VIII’s mother and Elizabeth Tudor’s grandmother.

What do you want for Christmas?

Christmas is just about a week away. Final presents are being bought and wrapped. Everyone is finalizing their plans for the holidays. Possibly you're running from party to party and store to store with a list of last minute things for your family and friends.

But what about you?
What do you want for Christmas? What's on your list you made for Santa?

Tuesday, December 16, 2008

Q&A with Alannah Lynne!!!!

Today marks the release of debut author Alannah Lynne's first book.
Here's a blurb about Reaction Time:

Nikki Kincaid carries her smart mouth and in-your-face attitude like other women carry mace. However, that bad attitude and razor sharp tongue aren’t wielded on everyone; they’re reserved specifically for Adam Guthrie. With nothing more than a heated visual stroke, her body’s reaction time to Adam is quicker than her reaction time at the starting line of a race. And that out-of-control response terrifies her because Nikki is always in control.

When someone starts sending her threatening letters, her brother and crew chief, Nate, asks his good friend, Adam, to help protect Nikki. And Adam jumps at the chance. For the past year and a half he’s been watching Nikki, analyzing her body language and cutting remarks, and has come to the conclusion she’s a sexual submissive. Spending five days in close quarters with her is the opportunity he’s been waiting for. He knows there’s a strong chemistry between them and, as a seasoned Dom, he’s certain he can bring her deeply buried submissive nature to the surface. Doing so, while also fulfilling her deepest desires, will be the greatest challenge of his life. And if he succeeds it will also be his greatest reward.

*You can purchase Reaction Time at Samhain Publishing*

Alannah has also graciously offered to give away a copy of Reaction Time!

1. Tell us about your newest release.

Nikki Kincaid carries her smart mouth and in-your-face attitude like other women carry mace. With nothing more than a heated visual stroke, her body’s reaction time to Adam is quicker than her reaction time at the starting line of a race. (If you want a shorter version, just let me know and I’ll send you something else. Thx)

2. When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

This is sort of a trick question for me. I’ve always joked about “writing a book about my bizarre life” but never really took myself seriously. I’ve always loved books, and deep down I wanted to write, but I thought being a writer was out of my grasp and beyond me.

3. Where do you get your information or ideas for your stories?

This kind of goes along with my answer to the previous question. I see scenes and I hear voices in my head. I’ve always had a vivid imagination and have always had the visions. Did I mention I’m a little slow sometimes? LOL It took me 40 years to figure out what I was supposed to be doing with those voices in my head and the scenes that were constantly running through my mind. So far, all of my stories have started the same way. I get a vision, then I start hearing voices and the characters will not leave me alone until I get their stories on paper.

4. What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?

LOL…my whole process is quirky but, I’d say the strangest quirk is the required “rest” period. When I’m working on a scene, it comes to me so much clearer – in bright, vivid details – if I lie down and rest. Not nap, but more like meditate. As soon as I start to drop into that relaxed state, the scene starts to play. Of course, then I have to get up and hold on to the details long enough to get them written, but that seems to be the most effective way of writing for me. You should see me trying to convince my hubby, “Honestly, I’m just laying here with my eyes closed. I’m not sleeping, I’m working.”

5. What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your books?

OMG…that I write hot, steamy erotic romances! I started out writing sweet and inspirational.

6. What authors or friends influenced you in helping you become a writer?

Oh wow, there are so many. But the most influential author has been Janelle Denison. The first romance I read was Janelle’s The Wilde Side, which is part of her Wilde Series. I was instantly hooked and scooped up not only the Wilde Series books but all of Janelle’s back list that I could find. I slowly began thinking, I wonder if I really could write a book? At the beginning of Born to be Wilde she talks about “peeling back the layers of Mia” and how much she learned about Mia as she wrote the book. That encouraged me because (remember I said I was a little dim) I thought, Oh, so you don’t have to know everything that’s going to happen in the beginning. I think I might like that process. And so, here I am.

However, I probably never would have gone through with the whole submission process if it weren’t for the Challenge Group that I’m a part of, especially Cara Carnes and Luanna Nau (who have read every single word and sometimes more than once). They gave me the courage to submit my work and I’m eternally grateful for their friendship and support!!

7. What does your family think about your career as a published author?

My husband is my biggest fan and has been encouraging from the very beginning. My oldest son, who is an aspiring musician (and therefore understands the whole chase-a-crazy-dream concept), is also extremely supportive and encouraging. My youngest son is thirteen…LOL…need I say more?

8. What is coming up next for you writing wise?

I have a story under consideration at Harlequin Blaze and while I’m waiting to hear back from them I’m putting the final spit shine on it so it’s ready to go (I’m an eternal optimist). LOL I’m also plotting (ack!) another story about a spunky bartender. I hope to start the first draft in a week or so.

Contemporary Romance

Los Angeles, California – Present Day

Taylor Donovan is at the peak of her career and getting bigger all the time. As a lawyer specializing in employment law, she has been sent to Los Angeles by her law firm in Chicago and assigned to defend a 30 million dollar lawsuit against her firm's client by the Federal Government and the EEOC. Taylor loves her job; she is dedicated to it, and all her free moments are consumed with being the best she can be, and her rise in the firm is proof of her success. Right at the beginning of the case, her boss, Sam Blakely, head of the California litigation department, calls her into the office. Oh oh, that usually means helping someone's relative with a legal matter or some such busy work. Sam wants Taylor to coach an actor in portraying a lawyer for a movie, and not just any actor, no sirree! Just The Sexiest Man Alive in People magazine, Jason Andrews. Despite all protestations, Taylor makes two appointments with Jason's assistant, but he never shows. Then one morning, she sees on television that he was in Las Vegas. Well, that doesn't go over very well with Taylor; she's a busy lawyer, not Jason's private pet. Then, while in a courtroom arguing a motion for the case before a judge, who walks in but the missing Jason Andrews, and unfortunately he more than lives up to his reputation. He's a beautiful man, and way too dangerous for Taylor, especially if she even gives him an iota of an idea that he appeals to her.

When Jason meets Taylor and she actually doesn't stutter in awe at him he's surprised; after all, he's The Sexiest Man Alive, as proven by every woman he's dated for many years. As we all assume about movie stars, he is rich, totally self-absorbed, and surrounded by paparazzi no matter where he is or what he does. This alone is something that he must deal with every day of his life. But Jason knows he's good looking, a great actor, and...well, a great lover if all the stories are true, and believe me, he knows they are. Jason is a serious actor, and even though he has won numerous awards, it's his astounding good looks and romantic escapades that hold everyone's interest. But Taylor treats him totally different, and he just can't believe it when she alternately ignores him and tries to tell him what to do. Doesn't she know who he is? He's The---yeah we know, Jason. To recount Taylor and Jason's relationship will take all the fun out of it; nevertheless, it's totally believable and heart warming and emotional. But, will Taylor stay and try to build a relationship with Jason, or will she return to Chicago after her case is finished?

Jason finds any reason to spend time with Taylor after the original consultation work, and Taylor soon sees that being with a movie star will involve interruptions and publicity that cannot be avoided. It takes Jason time and several attempts at gaining Taylor's attention -- all which blow up in his face -- he's never had to work so hard for any woman, just ask his friend Jeremy. His friend since college, Jeremy is the one person Jason can be himself with and who doesn't believe all the hype about him. Scott Casey is an Australian actor determined to oust Jason from his perch as The Sexiest Man Alive and willing to sweet talk Taylor and use her to his advantage. If you've ever wondered what it is like having the Hollywood spotlight on you, this is the book to read. Each word and situation is lovingly crafted and is, happy to say, perfection.

Julie James brings Taylor and Jason to life before our eyes, and we don't just like them, we love them, despite their flaws. Told from their points of view along with Scott Casey's, a fellow actor, each character is carefully crafted and brought to life. Taylor is expertly depicted as a driven lawyer, an expert at what she does, and she's damn proud of it. Jason acts the way we all think a typical movie star would; he's self involved and spoiled, but there is only his friend Jeremy who knows the deepest part of him. But Taylor reaches inside Jason, finds what makes him tick, and brings him to us as a real person, not a caricature of a movie star.

I loved every person in JUST THE SEXIEST MAN ALIVE and that's what makes it such a special read. There's Jeremy, Jason's friend; and Naomi Cross, Jason's next co-star. Marty is Jason's manager extraordinaire; and Scott Casey, a fellow actor. Taylor's two friends, Valerie and Kate, know her history and are completely in awe of the people Taylor is now acquainted with.

JUST THE SEXIEST MAN ALIVE is a spectacular beginning of what I hope is a stellar career of debut author, Julie James. While there is intense passion and chemistry between two people, there was actually no descriptive sex, can you believe it? And yet my heart beat faster and I felt as though I were interrupting the sexiest couple I ever read about. I'm jumping up and down here asking you not to miss this awesome novel that rightly deserves my Perfect 10 award. I am anxiously awaiting her next novel. Hurry, hurry Julie!

Historical Romance

London – 1800's

Esmeralda claims to hear the dead and see visions; she is popular at ton soirees, veiled, sitting quietly in a corner. During séances, Lady Hamilton is mesmerized by Esmeralda's every word -- much to her son's dismay. Thomas Hyde, Lord Varcourt, believes the mysterious and beautiful Esmeralda is a charlatan, making a fortune from the wealthy women of the ton. Thomas is shunned by many people who think he is to blame for his brother's demise twelve years ago. He is shocked when he hears that Esmeralda led his mother to a buried ruby necklace in their garden. What game is she playing, and what does she want with his family? Lord Olthwaite, a powerful Tory, is disconcerted when he sees the necklace. He has his men looking for a woman -- could that person be Esmeralda?

Thomas warns Esmeralda to stay away from his family but is shaken because of his attraction to her. Esmeralda is never seen without her veil, making her a mystery woman, a darling of the ton. When she leaves the soiree, Thomas follows her to a poor section of the city. He is determined to confront her and find out what her connection is to his family, the necklace, and Lord Olthwaite, and whether it is political or personal. But can he keep his distance from her?

WICKED INTENTIONS is a dark story about two troubled people. Esmeralda and Thomas can be heartless -- she is a fraud with an agenda -- and both Esmeralda and Thomas can be cruel. Readers will wonder what drives them to such extremes of behavior, but you can feel the pain behind their actions. As we turn the pages, we begin to know these two much better and learn what is tormenting them and can sympathize with them. They are drawn to each other. An interesting secondary character is Thomas's mother, who is plagued by what she believes about her son's death -- she copes by losing herself in drugs.

A hot romance, the pages smoke and sizzle in WICKED INTENTIONS. It will also keep readers in suspense as Esmeralda moves into the light. Enjoyable and well paced, it is an excellent book to curl up with on a cold winter day.

Q&A with Beth Kery!

Meet Beth Kery! Her newest, WICKED BURN, is currently in stores. You can read more about WICKED BURN by clicking here and you can learn more about Beth by going to her website at

1. Tell us about your newest release.

WICKED BURN is sort of a paradox, because when you first start reading it, you might think it’s just this scorching hot erotic-romance. But the intensely intimate sex right off the bat is there for a reason–it’s crucial because it’s what cuts through Niall’s (my heroine's) numbness after a terrible personal tragedy. The fact that Vic doesn't just creep into her world, but explodes into it, is about Vic’s dominant character, but also Niall’s tragic history.
WICKED BURN is a deeply romantic story between two people who have been scarred in different ways. Vic is the brooding, intellectual playwright and also the dead-sexy cowboy. I couldn't resist the contrast. What I love about Vic is that even though he makes his living through words, he’s acutely aware of the mystery of women…that he can't say things right for them. When he falls in love with Niall, and accepts her into his life, it’s like he’s overcome this major barrier–not only for his creativity, but his own growth as a human being.

2. When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

I wrote for a romance when I was in my twenties and sent it into Harlequin. The editor actually called me and told me what she liked, but then she said what didn't work for her. I was young and didn't know anything about the publishing world. I saw it as a rejection and didn't write again for ten years! I didn't realize how encouraging it was to have her call and tell me what to change. I still roll my eyes about it today. I guess I first knew I'd be a writer when my first book got accepted by Ellora's Cave a few years ago. It was published in January of 2007, and I've been going strong since then.

3. Where do you get your information or ideas for your stories?

I daydream a lot. I've come up with a lot of loose ideas while either walking in downtown Chicago where I live or driving and listening to music. Afterwards, I do quite a bit of research, depending on the storyline.

4. What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?

Hmmm...well, I'm sort of a geek who loves romance. I'm into art, history, science and travel, and it's inevitable that my interests creep into my storylines and plots. WICKED BURN is a good example, because Vic is a playwright and Niall is an art museum curator. I adore Chicago and had a blast walking the Prairie Avenue historic district and touring old mansions in order to research my upcoming time travel, DARING TIME. So I guess my writing quirk is that my topics/themes often reflect my geeky interests.

5. What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your books?

I was surprised to learn how long it takes to get a book published! This is a business where you have to be extremely patient. The waiting for various things is inevitable.

6. What authors or friends influenced you in helping you become a writer?

I was hugely influenced by what I read: Jane Austen, Sandra Brown, Mary Stewart. The first erotic romance I read was by NJ Walters, and I just loved it. I sensed that it was a good fit for me right away.

7. What does your family think about your career as a published author?

My husband is so incredibly supportive. Unconditionally. He's a great guy--must be to put up with my occasional manic-hysterical-author moments while I'm plotting a book or...releasing my first print book. (I've been a little squirrelly for the past few days.)

8. What is coming up next for you writing wise?

FLIRTING IN TRAFFIC comes out from Cerridwen in March 2009. This is a fun, light-hearted very sexy contemporary romance about the trials and tribulations of modern dating.

DARING TIME is a time-travel that comes out in May, 2009. It’s part contemporary/cop drama, part
historical, part ghost-story….totally sexy.

SWEET RESTRAINT comes out next August. It's an intense contemporary that occurs between two lovers who were torn apart a decade ago by a dirty cop organization. The hero is an FBI agent determined to get the woman of his dreams back…even if means kidnapping her and taking her to a secluded cabin until she sees the wisdom…and pleasure….in telling him her tragic truths.

PARADISE RULES is a book I just finished about a supremely confident, talented blues-singer who is forced to vacation in the dreaded place where she grew up–Hawaii. She’ll have to face her fears beneath the knowing hands of a local legend/athlete/businessman who insists she play by his rules–at least while she resides with him in paradise.

Evergreen, California – Present Day

Ricco Maza is a complicated man with a lot of family drama in his life. He is a policeman, and every year at Christmas, he returns home to Evergreen to be with his family. Years ago after his father left the family with three girls and a little boy behind, they were almost destitute. After his mother was raped, they left their town with no money and found their way to Evergreen, where people accepted and cared for them and took them in with love and friendship. Evergreen is that quintessential small town, especially during the Christmas season: friendly people, beautiful scenery, and a Christmas spirit that brings people from far and wide to visit every year, just as Ricco does. But the past few years, storms have prevented people from driving to Evergreen, and with the highway impassable, money is tight and huge loans have been made trying to save everyone's businesses. This year, Ricco makes a small stop in Reno on his way home and meets a beautiful woman, with whom he shares a night of outstanding sex. But the next day, he drives to Evergreen and jumps on the new snowplow and starts plowing up the highway, making way for all the tourists with money to spend, which the town needs. But who ends up running off the road in a rental car but Ricco's Cinderella from the night before.

Kimberly Michaels is a shark. Along with her boss, Nick Gold, their company finds companies or cities ripe for the picking. Then their company takes them over and runs them the way they want. Right now, Nick wants Evergreen, California for a new casino and resort town. Thanks to Kim's research, they know the city is on its last legs. As a winter town, with most of its money flow during the months of December and January, several years of snow storms that blocked the way to Evergreen have just about completely ravaged the town of its livelihood. Loans have been taken out, and now there is a balloon payment due, and Kim is going there to make them an offer they can't refuse. Her night in Reno involved several outstanding climaxes, of a quality seldom seen in her life. But first thing in the morning, she decides she must get her mind off sex and onto business and find a way to Evergreen despite the snowstorm closing down all the roads. When she drives into Evergreen, the first thing she does is run off the road, and when the man who rescues her is her Latin lover from the night before, she decides to remain incognito and pretend she's just visiting.

Kim has been married twice and is now almost engaged to her boss, Nick. Nick thinks they are such a good team in business, it's logical that together in marriage they would be unstoppable. Kim's early life echoes Ricco's. The only child of extremely wealthy parents, the only person who ever cared about her was her grandma, and the locket that she wears everyday is her only connection to someone who actually loved her. Deciding to investigate all areas of the town, Kim is decidedly uneasy dealing with Ricco, his sisters, their children, and his mother. Kim's never been surrounded by so many people before in her life!

When things start happening in town to scare visitors off, Kim doesn't know whether to be happy or scared. Her job identifies her, and just the thought of losing it and her tentative connection with Nick scares her. And Ricco is overwhelmed by his family, especially when his father returns home like the proverbial bad penny; does he really have cancer, or is this just another way to play everyone? Kim and Ricco have a sexual connection that almost overwhelms them; is it the real thing, or just two healthy people assuaging their desires? And will Evergreen survive the Christmas season and pay off its debts, or will Kim's company strike while the iron's hot as it usually does?

Karin Tabke has provided us with a stellar reading experience and two characters who pull at our heartstrings, especially Ricco. Written from Ricco's and Kim's points of view, we can easily see why both of them are afraid of relying on anyone else for their happiness. Ricco stays in Evergreen just long enough until family responsibilities totally engulf him, and then he returns to his police work the rest of the year, preferably undercover where the action is nonstop. Kim is outstanding at her job, and perhaps marrying someone who believes in the ethics of work, as she does, will be the perfect mate for her. In spite of that, the excellent sex with Ricco is pretty hard not to think seriously about. But first Kim must finish her assignment, even though friendly people in a town who talk to you actually freaks her out. Why are these people so nice?

Ricco's family and the citizens of Evergreen provide a boisterous, loving background to this wonderful story. Ricco's mother and sisters and their families are both his love and his despair. They rely on him so much that the tension of trying to be all things to all of them makes him crazy. And Ricco's father, Enrique, is at the heart of Ricco's fear of abandonment and the hatred that is such a part of his being that he cannot separate himself from the childish hurt he caused his whole family. Every person in Evergreen is trying his or her hardest to keep their town growing. And of course there is Nick Gold, Kim's boss, and almost fiancé.

HAVE YOURSELF A NAUGHTY LITTLE SANTA is a book with not only a sweet story and hot romance, but it shows the results of a whole family growing up with a father who left them and put his life ahead of his family's, and how that act changed his son's life forever. If you enjoy family dynamics and a very interesting, fast paced, sexy story, this should be at the top of your list this month.

Spotlight Review--TALL, DARK, AND KILTED by Allie Mackay

Signet Eclipse
ISBN: 978-0451-22551-1
November 2008
Paranormal Romance

Dunroamin Castle in Scotland's Far North, the Present

In an eerie prologue, a medieval Highlander, one Sir Hardwin de Studley of Seagrave, bargains with a lord of the underworld. It seems "Hardwick," so named for his proficiency at pleasing women, was cursed by a wandering wizard/bard. For 700 years, Hardwick has been forced to pleasure a different woman each night...without ever being able to find release himself! Even a lusty Highlander would eventually tire of such an existence. The devil promises to send Hardwick into that long, peaceful sleep if he proves himself by lasting a year and a day without being fully aroused by a woman. If he fails, Hardwick will be thrown to all the hags of hell for their pleasure. Hardwick chooses to spend that year and a day where he will surely face no temptation.

After being dumped by her boyfriend for a conniving other woman who, she suspects, had a hand in ruining her business, Cilla Swanner of Pennsylvania travels to Scotland to stay with her uncle and aunt at Dunroamin Castle, a registered care home for the elderly...the very same place Hardwick chose for his chaste sabbatical. Worse, it turns out that Cilla is one of those mortals able to see ghosts. And she likes what she sees! The feeling is mutual, for Cilla is also Hardwick's worse weakness, a lush damsel in distress.

Meanwhile, there is trouble in Dunroamin Castle. Guests are leaving in fear of the roving bands of fierce Viking ghosts haunting the grounds. The few that are left are a colorful set of oldsters who add humor to the plot and a welcome diversion from the steamy thoughts of Cilla and Hardwick. She longs for him like she's never longed for any man, and he constantly fights his own arousal while mentally toying with her. She won't know who and what he is or why he won't make love to her for a good part of the book, but the author starts in right away to treat us to earthy, explicit desires on both their parts. And I mean "parts" both figuratively and literally. I could wish more time was spent on developing the side plots and less on sexual fantasies, but that is just a matter of taste. The minor characters, mortal and not, and speculation on otherworldly matters -- especially the chances for lifting the curse -- added interest to the whole.

TALL, DARK, AND KILTED is an imaginative, intriguing, and sensuous novel. It's also connected to Ms. Mackay's HIGHLANDER IN HER DREAMS and HIGHLANDER IN HER BED. A search on HIGHLANDER IN HER DREAMS's title in RRT's home page search window will turn up our review of it in which Sandra recommends it highly. All the titles exhibit the author's knowledge and love of Scotland and its Highlanders.
