Ask Five with... (and a giveaway!) .....TONI BLAKE!!!!

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Toni Blake is one of my all time favorite authors. I first read her when she wrote for Harlequin. I was thrilled to hear she was writing bigger books. Yay! More Toni!

I recently had the pleasure of reading TEMPT ME TONIGHT and it is fabulous!!! Bad boys, move Joe Ramsey...and the lady who has tempted him all these years.
I love that cover for TEMPT ME TONIGHT!

If you haven't read Toni Blake, well, you are missing out. Seriously! She can write them sexy, funny, with some decidedly delicious heroes.

Without further Toni Blake!!!!!

1. What is the title of your latest release and what’s it about?

TEMPT ME TONIGHT was released on May 29 by Avon Red, but I think readers will find that, just like my previous book, SWEPT AWAY, it’s not your typical Red offering. By that I mean that while the imprint is billed as erotica, readers will find TEMPT ME TONIGHT falls more into the category of “super-sexy, super-steamy romance.”

TEMPT ME TONIGHT is the story of a woman who returns to her hometown after many years away to help her parents with some legal issues, but she soon bumps into her first love, who betrayed her when they were young. The book starts out to be much about her sexual attraction to him and how she decides to deal with it – through seduction, and through having the upper hand – but when she realizes her old feelings for him have never died, the book turns into a good, old-fashioned, heart-wrenching love story about youthful emotions, protecting our hearts, and forgiveness (but it also happens to come with lots of uber steamy sex ; ) )

I’m super-excited about this book, not only because I personally love it, but also because it was excerpted in the June issue of Cosmo! Now, I gotta be honest and tell you – Cosmo heavily edited the piece they used and I think readers will discover my “real voice” is a lot different than what’s in the magazine, but just to be featured in Cosmo is a dream come true for me, so this has been a super-fun time!

2. Which authors have influenced you over the years, whether for their writing or for their friendship?

Great question! And this might be a long answer because the romance community is so broad yet also tightly knit in ways. The first romances I read were Jenny Crusie’s Harlequin Temptations and they greatly influenced me, showing me that romance could be smart, sexy, and funny all at once. I’ve also been influenced by the writings of Kathleen Eagle, Teresa Medeiros, Judith Ivory, Barbara Samuel, and Rachel Gibson, just to name a few. I’m sure there are a ton of authors who influenced me early on who I might be forgetting about, unfortunately.

As for friendship, wow – so many people have befriended me along the way that it’s hard to name them all, but I’ll just mention a few who have always been wonderfully supportive and encouraging: Lori Foster, Elizabeth Bevarly, Laura Resnick (aka Laura Leone,) Jenny Crusie, and Teresa Medeiros have all been kind enough to give me advice along the way, answer questions for me, and help me feel my way through the maze of the publishing world.

Wow, I managed to keep that to a reasonable length, after all : )

3. What is the hardest part of writing?

These days, I find it challenging to balance promotional efforts with the actual time and focus required to write a good book. Part of that is because I have three books coming out three months in a row, so the promo push, for me, has been bigger than usual this time around. As for the actual writing, though, I suppose the most challenging part is pulling all the threads together in the end in a satisfying way. I tend to write fairly complex books with a lot going on and I usually reach a point of thinking: Oh no, I’ll never get this all tied up correctly. But then, somehow, I do. It can be nerve-wracking, though.

4. How do you stay motivated?

For me, writing is a pure joy, so I’m naturally motivated. It’s what makes me tick and I miss it immensely when I’m away from it. It’s the only thing I ever really wanted to do, and I’m thrilled that I’ve managed to make a career of it.

5. Looking in your crystal ball, what can readers expect to see soon in bookstores?

Well, after TEMPT ME TONIGHT this June, Avon is re-issuing my last book, SWEPT AWAY, in a new mass market version, available June 26, in just a few short weeks!. This book was the first full-length novel to launch the Avon Red line last fall, so I’m thrilled to see it getting a “new life” so soon! Also currently on the shelf (released May 1) is VOYEUR, an erotica novel by my alter ego, Lacey Alexander, put out by Penguin Putnam.

Next up for me (the Toni Blake me ; ) ) will be the release of LOVE LETTERS, currently set for June 2008. This book will mark my move out of the Red line and into Avon’s mass market contemporary program, but readers need not worry – the books will be the same as always for me, super-sexy and super-emotional. As for what it’s about, think Carrie Bradshaw meets Men in Trees. Also next June, I’ll take part in an anthology with twelve authors including Lori Foster, called THE POWER OF LOVE. Each story in this book is about women’s empowerment and the proceeds will go to a shelter for abused women.

I hope readers will sign up for my newsletter at so that I can remind them when new books are coming out and share new news with them when it hits. And if anyone out there is on MySpace, so am I, so feel free to “friend” me at

Thanks a bunch for a fun interview, Patti! You know how much I appreciate your support!

Thank you,Toni! You can visit Toni at her website:

If you have any questions for Toni, go ahead and ask her but she will be at the Lori Foster Get Together this weekend. She should be able to pop in Sunday to answer them for you.

And finally...

We have a giveaway of a copy of TEMPT ME TONIGHT.
The copy from Amazon came today.

Post and you shall be entered into the contest for a chance to win a copy of TEMPT ME TONIGHT.

I will pick the winner Sunday night.

Good luck!

Lake Tahoe, California – Present Day

Four months ago, Devlin Campbell met his lady luck in a casino in Atlantic City. Not only did he do well at the tables, but he also spent one fabulous night with the lady he nicknamed “Ms. Fortune.” Now he’s at Lake Tahoe, staying in a lodge as a condition of a will left by a late friend. Out for fun and a bit of distraction in a casino, imagine not only his surprise to find his one night stand working there, but that she’s pregnant. Did their night together provide a little dividend?

Nicole Price never expected to meet him again. But here Devlin is and demanding to know if he’s the father. Learning that he’s in the area for a month, Nicole is understandably nervous as to what Devlin’s intentions toward her are. He says he wants them to marry, but Nicole doesn’t want to marry just for the sake of their child. She learns that he comes from money, while she’s a single, working class woman, so their lives are worlds apart. No matter how much she tries to shake off Devlin, he’s there, wanting to be part of her life. Who will win the battle of wills? Can a couple who started out strangers ever have a chance at happiness together?

As implausible as it seems, Devlin and Nicole never exchanged names that night, and he never knew she worked for the casino resort company. Devlin feels as though he is now at a crossroads in his life as a member in the family banking firm with no say in how it’s run. He wants to leave, but can he leave a sure thing? Then Nicole reenters his life, along with the little expected bundle of joy she’s carrying. She provides him with a new reason to live and to look to the future. The hardest part is convincing her they are meant to be together.

Nicole is still recovering from the loss of her mother five months ago. She moved to Lake Tahoe to be near her father, and when Devlin proposes that she drop her life there and move back east, well, can you blame her for balking? Especially when he neglects mentioning the one thing she wants more than anything: love. Can she let herself be taken over by Devlin and have no say in the matter? Is she “bound by the baby” to have her decisions made for her?

The third book in The Millionaire of the Month series, readers continue to gain insight into how Hunter’s death affected his friends from college, tearing them apart but then bringing them back together…and each is finding love high up in the mountains. Three more stories remain, and I can’t wait to read them.

Susan Crosby has superbly penned a tale of a man and a woman who come together to not only create a baby, but who find each other under what cannot be described as the best of terms. Will they succeed and live happily ever after? You’ll have to find out in BOUND BY THE BABY. Don’t miss this riveting story.

Spotlight Review....THE BRAT by Lynsay Sands

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

THE BRAT – Lynsay Sands
Leisure Books
ISBN: 978-0-8439-5501-9
May 2007
Historical Romance

England, 1351

After her parents died, Lady Murie Somerdale, goddaughter of King Edward III, was moved to court where she quickly garnered the king’s favor. However, her new status made her a target. Along with the king’s affection came contempt and spite from jealous courtiers. To cope, Murie devised a scheme to become an enfant terrible, throwing outrageous tantrums and fits. Soon, nobody wanted to bother “The Brat,” as she was dubbed.

Now, ten years later, Murie has successfully managed to remain relatively unscathed by all the viciousness played out at court. Unfortunately though, when the king decrees it is time for her to marry, few men want to be saddled with a spoiled brat. However, there is Lord Balan of Gaynor, a handsome but impoverished knight who has proven his loyalty to the king on the battlefield many times. Murie feels certain he is destined to be her husband, and with the king’s approval she quickly finds herself married to Balan and on her way to a promising new life; one away from court and one with a good man who makes her heart race and her knees weak.

Balan is vexed that he must attend court and find a rich wife. He abhors court life and he is uncomfortable talking to women, let alone wooing them. But he returned from England’s latest campaign in France to find his home devastated by the plague. Almost half the servants and villagers at Gaynor, along with his father, died from the disease, and most of those that survived were lured away by the promise of a better life on other estates. There really is no alternative for him, but the idea of marrying The Brat is unappealing to say the least. That is, until Balan unexpectedly learns that Murie’s behavior is all an act. Still, he would have no chance to win her hand if it were not for a devious scheme he stumbles upon concerning Murie. Before she even learns of the plot, he saves her from harm and in so doing captures Murie’s attention. Balan should disabuse her of the notion that they are fated to be together, but she really is lovely and his desire for her is quickly growing. But can Balan survive marriage to The Brat? Although Murie is nothing like her reputation, it becomes evident that not everyone is satisfied with the match. On the way to Gaynor after their wedding, several near fatal accidents leave him in no doubt that someone wants him dead. Now Balan will not only have his hands full trying to restore his estate, but he must also discover who his dangerous new enemy is before anything happens to either him or his new wife, who, it seems, has already stolen his heart.

The first comment I must make about THE BRAT is to say ignore the title and read it anyway. As unappealing as the name is, the story is all one could hope for in its romance, humor, and charm. Endearing characters will captivate readers and a fun-filled adventure will hold their attention from beginning to end.

Balan is an irresistible hero. Although he’s a confident warrior on the battlefield, he’s shy and tongue-tied around women. His attempts to win Murie early in the story go a long way to charm her and make readers come to care for him too. There were times when I found myself sighing over Balan and his treatment of Murie, or chuckling out loud over his efforts to woo her. And this wit and charm does not end with Balan. The humor permeates the entire story. Thank goodness Murie is not really a brat but a kindhearted woman. However, she is also extremely superstitious. Her efforts to save her new husband from danger by finding good luck charms or following certain superstitions are as delightful as they are exasperating to Balan. Their relationship is full of warmth and passion and is strengthened by the harrowing experiences they face together. Not only does Ms. Sands do an excellent job of delivering a warm romance, but a suspenseful mystery as well. There is more than one suspect behind the attempts on Balan’s life, but twists and turns in the tale will keep readers guessing about the villain's true identity until the end.

With its lively plot, well-defined characters, and emotional romance, THE BRAT is a title I highly recommend.

Ask Five with....Jules Bennett!!!

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Here is another new author for readers to check out. I’ve sort of known Jules online for the past year or so, and when I saw that she had a book coming out from The Wild Rose Press, I had to ask her for an interview.

Keep an eye on new authors like Jules. They are destined for the bestseller lists! Sit back and meet Jules Bennett:

1. What is the title of your latest release and what’s it about?

Home Again is my latest release. This contemporary romance is a reunion story filled with emotion and passion. My heroine realizes nearly a decade after fleeing from her home, that she must return to face her past and capture the life she lost. Home Again is available now in e-book format and will be in print on June 29th from The Wild Rose Press. You can go to or to order a copy now. This will also be available at Borders, Barnes & Noble, Waldenbooks, and Amazon. If your store doesn't have Home Again, please ask for it.

2. What is the hardest part of writing?

Finding an equal balance between fiction and reality. I have a family and I run a small business, so I'm usually up all hours of the night working on a story. The actual process of writing has always come easy to me.

3. How do you stay motivated?

When I complete a manuscript, I always set a goal for the next. The goal may be a date to be finished or an editor to query. I always have a short-term goal because those small ones push me toward the long-term goal. Lately what motivates me is seeing the completed product. The second I see a new cover, it motivates me to make my current work in progress the best. The best motivator is seeing finish line.

4. Which authors have influenced you over the years, whether for their writing or for their friendship?

As far as writing, I will read anything by Lori Foster, J.R. Ward, Suzanne Brockmann, Cindy Gerard and Roxanne St. Claire. For friendship, I have to say my husband. He's been supportive from the first page I ever wrote. I also have to say my critique partners have been a huge help over the years.

5. What’s coming up in the near future for you?

Well, I just signed my first contract last October and more than likely I will have 5 releases this year! Everything is moving so fast for me. I am working on a series right now and I have a goal in mind for these three stories. My first book signing is coming up on June1st at Barnes & Noble in West Chester, Ohio. This is a multi-author signing with nearly 30 authors, so I'm thrilled to be a part of that. Keep watching my website and blog site for announcements! or

Thanks Jules! You can purchase Home Again by clicking here.

A Perfect Ten ... DARK SEDUCTION

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

A Perfect 10
The Masters of Time, Book 1
ISBN: 978-0-0373-77233-9
May 2007
Time Travel Romance

New York - Present Day & the Scottish Highlands - 15th Century

The blood of the ancient gods runs in his veins. He is Malcolm of Dunroch, a newly chosen Master sworn to protect the innocent and fight evil. A mistake in his past that left a young woman dead, makes Malcolm vow never to be tempted by the dark lust inside him again. Then he is forced to travel to the future in search of a page from the ancient Cladich. There he meets Claire Camden -- a woman who tests his faith, his honor, and his vow to protect the innocent.

The sole proprietor of a rare bookstore, Claire Camden has rarely taken time off since she opened the store five years ago. But her long awaited vacation to Scotland has arrived, and she cannot wait to go. As she's packing, she hears a knock on the door of the shop downstairs. Living in a large city, and having lost both her mother and a cousin to pleasure crimes, Claire is extremely cautious. When she refuses the woman outside entrance, the woman breaks in and demands that Claire give her the page from the Cladich. Claire has no idea what the woman is talking about. The woman, Sibylla, says they've met, but Claire has never seen her before, and before she can question her, Sibylla knocks her out. When Claire awakens, her troubles are not over -- now a man dressed as highlander is in her shop, and he too wants the page from the mysterious Cladich. But unlike Sibylla, Malcolm of Dunroch does not engender fear in Claire -- but intense lust. When they cannot find the page, Malcolm tells Claire she must come with him; she is his "innocent" and he must protect her. Sucked into a painfully whirling vortex, Claire blacks out and awakens writhing in passion beneath the sexy highlander. It's not long before Claire realizes she's no longer in New York -- she's not even in her own time but in 15th century Scotland.

From the moment that Claire and Malcolm meet, evil stalks them. As they try to find the missing page of the Cladich, they must fight deamhans and the devil himself as well as the potentially deadly lust that lives and breathes between them. Can an ancient Highland laird with supernatural abilities and a mortal bookseller from the 21st Century find a way to bridge the gap between them and stop the evil that threatens the world, or will they die trying?

Dark, dangerous, and sinfully seductive describe not only Joyce's latest novel, but her latest hero as well. Malcolm is a man of great power tempered only by his vows and his honor. He's arrogant, passionate and so sexy the testosterone fairly oozes off the pages. Reminiscent of some of Ms. Joyce's most memorable historical heroes, Malcolm is a character who is completely unforgettable. Claire is a modern day independent woman able to take care of herself despite her fears. When she is thrust back in time, she at first fears for her sanity, but it's not long before she realizes that if she wants to survive to return to the modern world and her family, she will need to learn all she can about the past. As a bookseller and a historian, Claire decides that this is the chance of a lifetime and tries hard to look at her present situation as an opportunity few scholars have. However, her attraction to Malcolm and the almost uncontrollable lust she feels for him frighten her. She fears to give into the physical attraction because her heart will surely follow. Secondary characters are many and as varied in personality as real people. Malcolm is not the only Master in 15th century Scotland, anywhere or anytime; there is an entire group of Masters imbued with supernatural powers to fight evil. All Masters have the ability to "leap" and they often leap to the present or the past when chasing the evil creatures that prey on the innocent. The relationship between Malcolm and Claire is passionate, erotically passionate, and heartbreaking -- each fears to love the other for different reasons, yet the reader can feel the love that builds between them.

A fast pace, a captivating couple, and a compelling plot make DARK SEDUCTION a stellar read. As the first book in a new series, the author has set the bar extremely high for future books. It's been years since I've fallen in love with a couple the way I have with Malcolm and Claire. I cannot wait for DARK RIVAL, the next book in The Masters of Time series to be released in October 2007. If you love the Highlands, Highland lords, and tales of good versus the ultimate evil, you will not want to miss DARK SEDUCTION, one of the best books I've read this year, and an RRT Perfect 10.

Erotica Chick Lit

Present Day

Every month she's a different woman with a new name. Sometimes she's older, experienced, and others she's younger or virginal. The common denominator in who she becomes for that particular month is Joe. No matter her persona or where he picks her up, Joe uses his skill to arouse and satisfy her every need and desire. She's addicted to Joe and almost can't wait those long weeks until she sees him again.

And it's all in her mind...

Psychiatrist Sadie Danning married her college sweetheart and, though her life isn't what she expected, she still very much loves her husband, Adam. But the fact of the matter is that, ever since the accident that left Adam a quadriplegic, they have drifted away from each other; Adam in his frustration and Sadie in her desire to keep a stiff upper lip despite the situation. Once a month over lunch, Joe, a chance meeting on a park bench, tells Sadie about his latest hookup and all of the salacious details of the encounter. What Joe doesn't realize is that Sadie sees herself as the star of his stories, living vicariously through him. Is it cheating if it's all in your mind?

A thoroughly unexpected erotic drama, BROKEN is as thought-provoking as it is sizzlingly sensual. All of the key characters are remarkably realistic, dealing with life and it's problems just as any of us would. Early in her marriage, Sadie was content to take a backseat to her literary spouse. She loved Adam with all her might and enjoyed her role as the dutiful wife. But the accident that doomed Adam to a wheelchair forced Sadie to accept the mantle of the dominant figure in their relationship, causing a friction that she has yet to figure out how to alleviate. Joe, like many thirty-somethings, is searching for love. Instead of love though, he finds himself involved in a series of one-night-stands that chip away at his spirit. Joe and Sadie are each other's outlet, with that brief once a month meeting enabling them to get through the subsequent weeks until they see each other again.

On a deeper level, the story explores the roles we take in our families and the difficulty in breaking those molds; the search for love; and managing when the unexpected happens whether it be the birth of a child or a devastating illness or accident. While the erotic sequences are numerous, basically kicking off each new chapter, readers will quickly come to realize how true to life they are especially when they understand the characterizations of the protagonists -- a woman who has gone for years without and a man searching for love through sex.

Megan Hart has blended erotica and Chick Lit in a truly heartwarming and realistic tale that won't soon be forgotten once read. BROKEN.

Ask Five with ... Anne Rainey!!!

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

I've known Anne Rainey online since before she was Published Author Anne Rainey.

As you can tell from her interview, she's very excited to be published and has some exciting news to tell everyone. If you haven't read Anne Rainey, what are you waiting for?

I love the cover for Haley's Cabin! You can read the review RRT Erotic did for Haley's Cabin by clicking here.

Without further introduction, meet Anne Rainey:

What is the title of your latest release and what's it about?

My current release is titled, Haley's Cabin. It sat on the Samhain
Bestseller list for 4 solid weeks!

Here's a little about that story:

Raw from an ugly divorce and wrung out from her demanding job, Haley
Thorne needs a break. When Haley's doctor urges her to take a vacation, she
heads to her secret cabin in the woods. The very first night, Haley dreams
of an erotic threesome that leaves her panting and aroused. When sexy police
detective Jeremy Pickett shows up at her door, she's shocked: He looks like
the man in her midnight fantasy! Levelheaded Haley unleashes her inner
seductress and has a little fun-handcuffs and all!

Also, coming to Forbidden Publications May 11th is my short story titled,Instructing Sarah.
Here's a little about that spicy tale. ;-)

Greg Stiles craves his neighbor, Sarah Templeton. He figures she
should've been named Sarah Temptation. So far, he's been a good boy and kept
his distance. When another man moves into their complex and starts sniffing
around Sarah, Greg's honorable intentions fly right out the window. It's
time to show Miss Templeton just how good he can be.
Sarah isn't ashamed of her virginal status, just tired of it. She's
always wanted a husband, kids, and the white picket fence. Those dreams seem
forever out of reach. So when her hunky neighbor asks her out on a date, she
jumps at the chance. She's watched him. Wanted him. Now she'll have him.
Problem is, how does she keep him?

How do you come up with ideas for your stories?

Usually some insignificant thing I see or something someone says. It's like
a seed, it slowly germinates and eventually a story is formed. Haley's Cabin
started out as a single scene. I was playing with the idea of a threesome,
things took off from there. Big time! LOL

I got the idea for Instructing Sarah after hearing a girl complain about
losing her virginity, it hadn't been at all a good experience for her. I
really wanted to show this girl how beautiful the experience can be when
it's with the right person. Thus, Sarah Templeton and Greg Stiles were born.

Which authors have influenced you over the years, whether for their writing
or for their friendship?

Wow, that's a long list, lol! I will try and narrow it down some.

Hmm, the first person that springs to mind is Lori Foster. She's been a
great inspiration to me. First because of her excellent stories. No one does
romance quite like Lori. Her characters are real people and I always find
myself drawn to them and their situations. Second, because she's been so
generous to new authors, sharing her insights into the world of publishing.

A few others include Lucy Monroe and Janice Maynard. Their terrific stories
and welcoming attitude is why I love this business so much. Also I do want
to include a couple of close friends, Jen and Pat, because they've kept me
from tossing out my keyboard and giving up...more than once! LOL

Writing can be a lonely job, how do you stay motivated?

My husband, my kids and my mom keep me motivated by constantly letting me
know how proud they are of me for pursuing my dream. Their support is the
best sort of motivation! Also, I'm part of a yahoo group called The Romance
Bistro. This is where I and several other authors post excerpts, contests,
and chat with readers. The interaction with all the friendly folks there
keep me pumped. Plus they're fun to hang with when I'm not working. ;-)

Looking at the crystal ball, tell us what's coming up in the near future for

Well, I have a few short stories coming out this summer and I hope to have a
few more later in the year as well. Stay tuned to my website for updates on
that. There is one bit of exciting news I'd love to share. My erotic
romance, Scandalous Behavior, comes to Red Sage Publishing in 2009. In
print! I can't wait! I love the Secrets Volumes and I'm thrilled to have one
of my stories in one.

Thank you, Anne! Be sure to check out Anne's website:

A Perfect Ten-- MARKED by P.C. Cast and Kristin Cast

MARKED – P.C. Cast and Kristin Cast
The House of Night, Book 1
A Perfect 10
St. Martin’s Griffin
ISBN: 978-0-312-36026-9
May 2007
Young Adult Contemporary Paranormal Fiction

Tulsa, Oklahoma – Present Day

Zoey Redbird is clearly having a bad day. It started off with her best friend Kayla emphasizing that her boyfriend – “almost-boyfriend” – Heath had not been cheating on her at a party. Zoey hadn’t even known there was a question of infidelity in the first place, and, uh, he isn’t really her boyfriend right now. His beer guzzling had so gotten old and totally disgusting, despite the fact that Heath is the high school’s football god. To cap it all off, Zoey is Marked, and that requires some explanation.

It’s been proven by scientists and researchers that there truly exists a race called vampyre. Defined by the blue crescent-shaped mark on the forehead, a vampyre is Marked and subsequently leaves for the House of Night to begin “training.” Some may call it ghoul school, some may call it...well, whatever they like, but no one can predict if or when a teen will be Marked. Humans denigrate and fear it, and the unlucky individuals who now have this bodacious mark on their foreheads have a lot to deal with -- a change of life, a new school, and getting used to those who share their fate. Oh, and then there’s that whole blood thing...

Yeah, so, see what kind of pain Zoey’s feeling right now? At a new school, with new uniforms, and a new lifestyle, Zoey quickly realizes that a hierarchy similar to that of high school exists at the House of Night. It’s all very confusing, and she quickly realizes that there are a few kids just like her, learning the ropes. With her new roommate, Stevie Rae, and a couple of other new friends, Zoey forms friendships and alliances, and even develops a new crush -- Erik “ohmygod” Night. But Zoey stands out from the others, and it’s not just because the High Priestess Neferet is her mentor. Hey, just because Zoey has been hand-picked by the goddess Nyx doesn’t mean she’s a shoe-in for this gig...

Now, about that blood thing...

With a nod to Harry Potter and X-Men, P.C. Cast and her daughter Kristin have on their hands a stellar launch to their new series, The House of Night. Already known for her immensely popular Goddess Summoning series, it was only natural for P.C. Cast to team up with daughter Kristin and write from a different perspective. I can only imagine those brainstorming sessions! Teen lingo and machinations is a totally evolving thing, and so much has changed even from my teen time *bleep* years ago. But what gets me with MARKED is that it’s not just a young adult tale that will only entertain those teenyboppers. I’m thirty-...*cough* ahem, well, I’m not exactly a teen, and I still got a total thrill from reading of Zoey and her friends’ adventures. “Wicked cool” and “gnarly” came to mind, but I really think those terms went out back in 1990 -- so just how do you describe a book that has it all these days? Riveting, page-turning, nail-biting, etc? Yep, that pretty much sums up MARKED and has really got me jonesing for more from Zoey and the gang at House of Night. All characters in this book are well-defined and plotted out, making them very easily identifiable. We all had the class bullies and cheerleader snobs to contend with back in the day, so maybe for many MARKED will be a nightmare revisited. But Zoey and her friends, Damien, Stevie Rae, Erin, and Shaunee, truly stand out and add a bit of zaniness, laughter, and tears, and exemplify true friendship.

A heads-up for those parental control type folks, however: a bit of colorful language is used here and there throughout the book (not abused, though), and while I understand that this may be normal for teens nowadays, it wasn’t very rampant in the young adult books I read as a kid. I can only imagine I’d have a few ugly words if I were thrown in a situation like Zoey’s...

With that said, my next question -- do you award a young adult book RRT’s Perfect 10? Absolutely, and that’s just what I’m doing. My only other thought is this -- how willing would P.C. Cast be to put an adult spin on it and give us stories for the various professors at House of Night?

An interview with the American Title 3 winner...Jenny Gardiner!

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

I contacted Jenny Gardiner and asked her to do a post RT interview. (I interviewed her earlier this year for the blog. You can read that here.)

Here is what she says:

Wow, congratulations go to Jenny Gardiner for winning Romantic Times magazine's American Title 3 contest with Sleeping with Ward Cleaver! It is scheduled to be out in early 2008 from Dorchester. One can only imagine the fun and excitement you had at the RT convention this year!

Thank you so much, Patti. It's been an incredible experience. RT was a blast--quite a wild time. It was wonderful meeting all the RT folks, who were terrific, and my editor, Chris Keeslar, and all the other Dorchester folks, who were as sweet as can be. They gave me a tiara when they announced the win, so I took advantage of the situation and sported my tiara for much of the weekend ;-) . I figure after that I'll not have much occasion to wear it.
I also had the pleasure of getting to meet in person four of my fellow finalists--Judi Fennell, Kim Howe, Raz Steel and Linda Thomas-Sundstrom, as well as last year's AT II winner Gerri Russell, who has been fabulous. We all had a great time together and have become each other's best cheerleaders.

When did you find out you had won and was it hard to not tell everyone the news?

I found out the day after the voting ended, I think on March 5, so it was hard to keep from telling people for that six weeks or so until the RT convention. Sometimes I almost let it slip by accident.

Did you go out and celebrate with your family after you found out?

I found out around 11 in the morning so my kids were all in school--I texted them (highly illegal!) so I got text congrats from them all, and went out to celebrate at lunch with my husband and a very good friend of mine. I think it was one of those crazy days in which my kids didn't end up home until well after dinnertime, due to soccer games and practice, play practices, etc, so we didn't do anything huge that night. Ah, the exciting life of a mother of teens!

Give us a blurb about Sleeping with Ward Cleaver.

Here's the back cover copy:
Wham, bam, no-thank-you, ma'am. That about sums up the sex life of Claire Doolittle. Not-so-happily married to Jack—once the man of her dreams but now a modern-day version of the bossy, dull Ward Cleaver of 50's sitcom fame—Claire is at the end of her rope. Gone are the glorious days of flings in elevators and broom closets. Jack? All he needs is a cardigan and a billowing pipe to become the domineering father figure Claire never wanted. And looking at her body in the mirror, Claire would cast herself as Lumpy. They’d once had a world of color, of wanton frivolity. Now, life’s black and white: a sitcom in reruns. A not-very-funny sitcom. Cue an old boyfriend—the "one that got away"—throw in a predatory hottie who's set her sights on our leading man, and watch Claire's world spiral out of control.

In the old TV show, the Beaver always got a happy ending. Claire wants one, too.

How long have you been writing?

I've been writing in various forms for my whole life, really. Like when I was bombing in 4th grade math, I was the one who wrote the extra credit paper to keep me from getting a "D." I had ambitions to be a journalist from early in high school so wrote for the paper, the yearbook, etc, in high school, and that is what my formal training ultimately was, in broadcast journalism. I worked in radio and TV and then in PR on Capitol Hill. I got sick of that and became a freelance photographer for a while, which was a lot of fun, but when my kids were born, that put the kebosh on the glamorous photog career, as so much of it was last-minute--you know, calls wanting me at a press conference in 30 minutes, which is impossible with small children at home.
So I didn't write much of anything for a long while then. Just grocery lists and Christmas letters each year. I started writing again about four years ago when we had a drought in my state that got so bad we had extreme water restrictions--had to catch extra water in the showers in buckets in order to flush toilets, etc. I was so bummed when it dawned on me that no one would have holiday parties that year because who could host 100 people for drinks and then not let them use the bathroom all night?
I decided to write a funny essay about it and subbed it to a local paper. Luckily they bought the piece right away, which gave me the false confidence that it would be easy to get published! I then started writing essays and commentaries, usually humorous slice-of-life pieces, for regional publications, and then started writing more serious pieces that got picked up in such publications as Washington Post, Ladies Home Journal. I was doing radio essays for a regional NPR affiliate as well, and even got an essay on NPRs Day to Day.
All this time, I had become a voracious reader again, after having relegated myself to reading a paragraph of People magazine at bedtime when my kids were little and I was too exhausted to do much more than that. But after reading hundreds of books I started seeing what I loved and hated in books that were out there, and decided "Oh, I can do that!" How often do you hear that from writers?! We get motivation from others. Having come from a journalistic background, I didn't think I'd be capable of just making things up, but once I started, I realized that it was quite liberating to not be bound by truth and facts any more, and really started having fun with writing. All that was the long way of saying I really only started writing fiction about two years ago, but everything I'd done to that point was preparing me for it.

Any advice for someone interested in entering American Title 4?

Absolutely--go for it! When I submitted to the contest I really didn't very know much about it. I just saw that I could get my writing in front of editors, maybe without having to wait in a 1-year slush pile. That I was accepted as a finalist was a huge bonus, and that I was able to win it is still hard for me to wrap my head around. I am living proof that miracles do happen ;-) and I hope this inspires other writers to throw their partials into the ring. This contest has been nothing but remarkable for me--I have met so many wonderful writers, readers, industry professionals, and it sort of gave me license to get my name out there--the exposure has been invaluable. I am so enormously grateful for it, and a year ago at this time I was relatively in the dark about the contest, and most people hadn't heard of my name and certainly not the name of my book!

What's up for you now and after the publication of Sleeping with Ward Cleaver?

I've got all sorts of manuscripts in various states of revision and/or completion. My agent and I are figuring out what to submit next and see what happens from there. In the meantime, I've got revisions on Ward to get to Chris, plus a number of other ancillary writing deadlines (I have a column of humorous essays in our local paper, and I've got some freelance writing jobs I'm trying to get to, as well as some speculative pieces I'm writing for other publications). Enjoying also getting back to my WIP, which has been waiting for me to decide what's going to happen next for months now (I'm a total seat of the pants writer). And there will be a lot to do to prepare publicity-wise for the release of Sleeping with Ward Cleaver. And I sure hope that people like it when they finally get to read it!

Thanks, Jenny, for being with us and the best of luck on your future projects.

Thank you Patti for inviting me in!

You can visit Jenny's website at
Jenny is one author to keep any eye on and don't forget to pick up Sleeping with Ward Cleaver when it comes out next year!

I think it's a book that a lot of people can relate to, so I hope you'll give it a chance. It's pretty funny, and poignant at times as well.

Thanks, Jenny! Can't wait!

Ask Five with...Erin McCarthy!!!!

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at PhotobucketPhoto Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

I am absolutely thrilled to have Erin McCarthy as my guest. I've watched Erin's career since she first vaulted to the frontburner in Lori Foster's Brava Novella Writing Contest and into a contract with Kensington Books. Since that time, Erin has parlayed her books onto the best-sellers list.

And this finally notched her a RITA nomination! WTG Erin!

Without further's Erin!

1. What is the title of your latest release and what's it about?

My latest release is BLED DRY, out this month! Bled Dry is the third book is my Vegas Vampires series, and features Brittany and Corbin. Here's the back cover copy:
Hooking up with a vampire has its risks-but getting pregnant usually isn't one of them. Tell that to Brittany Baldizzi, who finds herself in the family way with no father in sight. After their one night of passion, vampire Corbin Jean Michel disappeared off the face of the earth-or at least off the Vegas strip...

Corbin is a vampire with a cause, secretly trying to find a cure for his condition. But when he finds out Brittany is pregnant with his child, Corbin can't keep his parental instincts from trumping his bloodsucking ones. Even when showing his hand could cost him the woman he can't help but love...

2. How did you come up with the idea of writing vampire stories?

You know, I like to read paranormals, and I think that taking something normally so dark and ominous like vampires and death and adding a bit of humor, really appealed to me. I was just going to write one vampire book, to see how I felt about it, and the characters really grabbed on to me. There are now four books total in the series, and I've had a blast writing them.

3. Which authors have influenced you over the years, whether for their writing or for their friendship?

Lori Foster without a doubt. She took me under her wing from day one, and we've become great friends. I greatly admire the way she approaches the business.

4. Is there another genre you would consider writing in?

Now that I'm doing comedy, dark paranormals, and young adult books (under the name Erin Lynn), I've really explored all I want to at the moment. I'm having trouble fitting it all in as it is, and I don't want to give any of them up. :-)

5. What's coming up in the near future for you?

In September, my first dark paranormal, MY IMMORTAL, comes out. This will be in regular paperback size, instead of trade, and features Damien du Bourg, a man who has bartered for immortality, and in exchange must encourage lust in human women. It's dark and sensual, with a southern Louisiana setting. I hope readers will like my dark side!

Then in December, the fourth book in the Vegas Vampires series will be out, SUCKER BET. This is Gwenna's story.

Thank you, Erin!

Fantasy Romance

Mount Olympus - Eternal Time, and Chicago, Illinois - the Present

Zeus has sent his daughter Chloe, the Muse of Happiness, to the mortal realms for one year as punishment. If she does her job right, she may return to Olympus for an eternity of posh living. Her options are very limited, plus she is warned not to fall in love with a mortal. She can keep in touch via email, now the main modus operandi of the gods.

For her year with the mortals, Chloe has landed in Chicago. She works hard for Belle Castleberry as her assistant at Castleberry Hall, marketing and planning weddings, showers, and various meetings to take place in the hall's gracious rooms. Her success shows, but during her tenure, she has developed a very close relationship with the octogenarian boss, taking over most of the business operations and making sure the business thrives. The hard part will be breaking the news to Belle, the housekeeper, Ruby, and the gay catering chef, Clark, that she is leaving very soon. All her handshakes and wishes for happiness to just married couples, brides-to-be and mothers-to-be plus the Optimist Club must be making big marks with Zeus, which will insure her return to Mount Olympus's eternal paradise. Chloe is sure ONCE Belle's surgeon grandson returns, he won't want to continue the business, but there is a lucrative offer for purchase waiting, which will leave Belle and Ruby the chance to retire very well off.

Returning home a month earlier than expected from his two years with Doctors Without Borders, Matt Castleberry is exhausted and scarred, his not so handsome face streaked with the slashes from an attack. At home he finds a beautiful blonde inhabiting his bedroom [who refuses to leave]. He suspects Chloe Degodessa of somehow swindling his grandmother through her business. He cannot discover anything, however, except how perfect and alluring Chloe is. As she insists she must leave, he becomes equally determined to make her stay.

You forget the fantasy part of ONE NIGHT WITH A GODDESS, although it is always there, and you think you are reading a light-hearted contemporary romance. You will enjoy each of the kibitzing characters who are wonderfully charming in a down-to-earth way. Everything seems so very real and reasonable. Matt is a wonderful hero, caring and giving, as his stint with Doctors Without Borders in Africa proves. He loves his grandmother and will do whatever it takes to make her happy, and the continuation of Castleberry Hall is what she wants. After the horrors of Africa, Chloe is a healing balm for his wounded soul. She is a goddess, after all. But how could a mere mortal ever change her path? For she must return to Zeus, and that means forgetting about Matt. Once you read this novel, you'll want to read the first in the series if you haven't already. Each is a stand-alone, but great stories like these aren't to be missed.

Book one of the Goddess series, ALMOST A GODDESS, released May 2006, is in the RRT 2006 Archive under Fantasy/Sci-fi Romance Reviews.

Guess what I'm giving away? A brand new spanking copy of Voyeur by Lacey Alexander!

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Here's a little blurb about it:

Suffering from writer's block and with no lover to speak of, novelist Laura Watkins is in a funk. She needs a getaway and a release. Fast. Fortunately, she finds both in the retreat of a friend's isolated Colorado home. It's hers and hers alone for as long as she needs it. Then she comes upon the webcam, and her curiosity is aroused. So is her secret fantasy-to be watched by a stranger.
His screen name is Flyboy. He likes what he sees. He wants to open up for her, too. Now, they're only one click away from exploring an after-hours game of exhibitionist and voyeur where anything goes. But now it's time to take it one step further-by meeting in the flesh. This time, no rules, no limits, and absolutely nothing to come between them.

Post away for a chance to win! One winner will claim it!
I will announce the winner Monday night!

Misty Creek, Kentucky – Present Day

When a dance reality TV spoof show decides to showcase the citizens of Misty Creek, Abby Harper suddenly finds herself on national TV. The show is called Dancing with the Rednecks, and Abby and her fellow townspeople are advertised as the epitome of redneck behavior. Will the show turn into a parody that embarrasses Abby, or will she just dig in to try to win the $50,000 grand prize? Once she meets her dance instructor/partner, Abby’s heart goes pitter-patter. Rio Martin is handsome, suave and not too happy to find himself in the middle of hillbilly country. But the smoldering chemistry between Abby and Rio burns on the dance floor…and off.

Abby doesn’t figure she’ll go far on the show, but under the close tutelage (very personal, I might add) of Rio, she blossoms. With each moment spent with Rio, Abby falls deeper in love. Rio is charismatic and darkly romantic and learns that life in Misty Creek isn’t all that bad after all. Abby and Rio have to dance the best they possibly can, since the competition is pretty darn good. Throw in Rio’s ex-love, who’s determined to win him back as well as the contest, and the stakes rise.

Minor characters besides Rio’s ex, Angelina, include: Julia and Danny, high school friends of Abby’s who compete against each other in the game of love; trucker Mac Murphy, who proves to be light on his feet despite his bulk; Mary Jane, who has a bit of a problem about keeping her body in control while dancing; and Abby’s mama, who owns a real redneck diner and attracts the attention of the show’s producer. There are many other characters and not enough space here, so you’ll have to read to see how they contribute so richly to the story.

A hoot a minute, DANCING SHOES AND HONKY-TONK BLUES is a send up of that other dance show and nails an RRT Perfect 10 from this reader. Even if you aren’t a dance fan, you can relate to the down-home charm of Abby and her fellow Misty Creek citizens. For me, the pages flew at an alarming rate, because I didn’t want to stop reading. LuAnn McLane shows her talent for tongue-in-cheek prose and situations. DANCING SHOES AND HONKY-TONK BLUES could have ended up a slapstick comedy with characters with little appeal, but Ms. McLane brings heart and soul -- as well as humor -- to a tale that richly deserves to be put at the top of any reader’s book buying list.

With sexy wit and characters who have you falling in love with them, DANCING SHOES AND HONKY-TONK BLUES is a winning tale not to be missed.

What are you currently reading?

Satisfaction Guaranteed by Lucy Monroe

What is your favorite romance genre (contemporary, historical, paranormal, etc) to read?

My favourite genre is contemporary and light paranormal. I used to read historicals, but have strayed from that. I love a good suspense romance novel as well.

Do you have a "to be read" pile and if so, how many book are approximately on it?

Acck!! I have a to be read boxes, and I cannot give you an estimate as to how many of there are in there. But I presently have 10 books sitting in my closet that I really must read, but I keep adding to that pile as well.......pathetic is what I am.

If you could sit down and have lunch with five authors, dead or alive, which five would you like to be sitting there with you?

Yikes that is hard to narrow down to just five, but I would think Suzanne Brockmann, Jill Shalvis, Lori Foster, Karen Kelley and Catherine Mann. This was hard to narrow down to just five.

Name a book (and its author) that you've read recently that went on your keeper shelf.

Smart and Sexy by Jill Shalvis is the one I finished most recently that went there.
