1. Tell us about your newest release.

A SECRET IN HER KISS is set in Constantinople in 1815. 2. Can you tell us a little about your favorite scene in the story?

Fairly late on in the story, as Mari and Bennett are on their final mission, Bennett finds out that Mari found his book of poetry and read it. Having been mocked for his writing he is embarrassed and angry. Yet at the same time he can’t quite stop himself from finding out her opinion! It is a fun glimpse into tough-guy-Bennett’s softer more vulnerable side.

3. When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

When I was eight, I decided my real life was too dull, so I started writing my journal as if I was on a raft on the Amazon River with my dog Cream Puff (A Pomeranian. Poor thing. I’m not sure how I expected it to survive in the heat.). I may not have decided I wanted to be writer as a profession then, but my love of a good fantasy was born.

4. Tell us a little about your daily writing routine. Are you a plotter or pantser?

I have kids so my writing is mainly confined to naptime and after bedtime. It makes for a lot of late nights, but I love it too much to give it up.

As far as plotting and pantsing—a little of both, but mostly a pantser. I have several key scenes I know I am going to include. I just never quite know how I am going to get there.

5. What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?

If I’m writing and I decide to cut a scene, I don’t delete it entirely. I tack it on to the end of the document until I am completely done with the book. I think I find it too disheartening to lose my hard-earned word count. And I’m always terrified I’ll need it later! On the plus side, it makes it easier to cut things that need to go because I can always change my mind.

6. What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your books?

It amazes me how much my subconscious plays a part in my story. For example, when I get to the end of the story and realize small clues I didn’t realize I was leaving earlier flow perfectly into the ending I want.

7. What authors or friends influenced you in helping you become a writer?

My critique partner Elise Rome and I were lucky enough to meet fairly early in our writing careers. She’s strong in areas I’m weak in and vice versa. I also have a fabulous core group of local writer friends. We beta read for each other occasionally, but it is really about supporting each other in the strange career that is writing.

8. What does your family think about your career as a published author?

They are incredibly supportive. My mom edits my books and my husband brags about my writing at work. His co-workers have copies of my cover on their desks. We’ll see if that changes once they actually read it…

9. Besides writing, what other interests do you have?

I have two small children so I spend a lot of time with them. I’m pretty awesome at hide-and-go-seek if I do say so myself. I love to read everything I can get my hands on. I also love chocolate in all forms.

10. Can you tell us about what’s coming up next for you writing wise?

In early Summer of 2012, readers will be able to discover happens to the little sister Bennett is worried about in A SECRET IN HER KISS. Sophia is just rediscovering her own strength after an abusive relationship, but it’s a knowledge she must claim quickly as she faces off with a maddeningly handsome magistrate who thinks she might be guilty of murder. It’s an e-novella and should be a fast, sexy read!

Then in late summer 2012, my next novel SINS OF A VIRGIN, will be released. To secure her future, former spy Madeline Valdan announces the auction of the one thing no one suspects she still possesses—her virginity. But Madeline’s no fool. She won’t entrust her precious commodity to just anyone. She hires Gabriel Huntford, a Bow Street Runner, to protect her virginity until it’s properly paid for. Although the passion Huntford inspires is unlike anything she’s ever known, Madeline knows better than to give herself away for free. She also knows the man she hired is hiding an agenda of his own.

1. Tell us about your newest release.

It’s such a pleasure to be here and thank you so much for asking about SHE TEMPTS THE DUKE. It begins a new trilogy about three brothers who are targeted for murder when their father, the Duke of Keswick, dies in an accident. Their uncle wants to do away with them and inherit the dukedom. Their neighbor’s daughter, Mary, helps them to escape. The brothers, ages 10 and 14 (twins) decide to split up. One goes to the army, one to the sea, one to the streets. Twelve years later, they—three rough and hardened men—return to reclaim their heritage. But nothing they’ve endured during the years has prepared them for the women who can bring them to their knees.

2. Can you tell us a little about your favorite scene in the story?

That is a tough question—probably the scene in the garden when they first kiss. Sebastian has tried to continue to see Mary as the girl who had played with him as a lad but he’s finding it more difficult. It doesn’t help that he was terribly scarred during the war and doesn’t want to burden her with a beast for a husband. Mary is coming to realize that he has become quite the formidable man, but she is also able to see beneath his scars. The kiss, in modern terms, rocks their worlds.

3. When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

I’ve always thought of myself as a writer. When I was young, I kept a diary and wrote lengthy letters to any relative who provided me with an address. I just loved writing. To this day, I prefer to communicate with the written word rather than verbal ones.

4. Tell us a little about your daily writing routine. Are you a plotter or pantser?

Definitely a pantster. I usually have an idea of where the story is going but now how I’m going to get from the opening sentence to the closing one. It’s always a fun exploration. As for my daily writing routine, I write early in the morning, late at night, and often in between.

5. What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?

That I like to write with storms playing in the background. I have a CD that plays a thunderstorm while I write. For some reason, it really gets me in the mood to tell a story.

6. What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your books?

How much control the characters have over the story. I’m often surprised when I’m writing along and suddenly the hero sneaks in a kiss when I hadn’t planned on it happening until much later.

7. What authors or friends influenced you in helping you become a writer?

My sister, Theresa, was a big influence. I would send her a chapter, she’d read it, then call and ask me where the next chapter was.

8. What does your family think about your career as a published author?

They think it’s great. They’ve always been very supportive. My husband takes care of the house, food, cooking so I’m free to write. My sons would go to booksignings with me when they were younger. I am actually writing under the name J. A. London with my youngest son. Our first book, DARKNESS BEFORE DAWN, will be released in June 2012 from HarperTeen.

9. Besides writing, what other interests do you have?

I love spending the day at the spa, going to movies, reading romance. I enjoy traveling, although we haven’t done as much of that as we’d like.

10. Can you tell us about what’s coming up next for you writing wise?

Next up, in October, will be LORD OF TEMPTATION, which is the 2nd brother’s story. He’s a ship captain and while he knows he should move back into Society, he’s just not quite comfortable there—but not being in Society makes it more difficult to have what he most wants: Lady Anne.

1. Tell us about your newest release.

A TOWN CALLED VALENTINE is my debut contemporary novel set in Valentine Valley Colorado, a little fictional town in the mountains outside Aspen. My heroine, Emily Murphy, penniless after a bad divorce, returns to Valentine to sell a run-down building she inherited from her mother to finance her return to college. Of course things don’t go as planned when she meets sexy cowboy Nate Thalberg the first night she’s there. She encounters intriguing people and discovers long-buried secrets from her own past.

2. Can you tell us a little about your favorite scene in the story?

Ooh, that’s a tough one, because I like all these characters so much! But if I have to choose, I’d say I really like the opening scene, where Emily comes to town in the pouring rain and stops for dinner late at night at Tony’s Tavern. Newly divorced, trying to be a different woman, she flirts with Nate, and ends up playing a game of pool where the bet is a big risk for her.

3. When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

I’d always been a reader, but when I was a kid, I used to imagine how I would write a story differently. When I was thirteen years old, I wrote my first science fiction story about teenagers in space. Over the next several years, my stories were passed all around my high school. And then I read my first romance, and the whole focus of my writing changed. I originally concentrated on historical romance, which I still write under the name Gayle Callen. But I always had such a yearning to write about small-town America. It’s so fun to see this dream finally happen!

4. Tell us a little about your daily writing routine. Are you a plotter or pantser?

I’m definitely a plotter. I always loved the logic of math and science, and I need a blueprint to follow as I write. Nothing is set in stone, but it’s a good guideline. I plot everything out on index cards until I have a stack a couple inches thick, and next I write a synopsis before writing the book. As for my daily routine, I try to be at my desk by 8 or 8:30 in the morning, and work until 1. I walk my dogs, eat my lunch, take care of a few tasks, and then I’m back to work by 3 or so, where I write until I meet my daily page goal. Usually that’s 10-15 pages.

5. What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?

Hmm…Perhaps that I really only write in one place, my office. The words seem to flow best for me there; I can concentrate with no distractions. Even if someone has a TV on in another part of the house, when I’m in my office, the distant sound doesn’t bother me a bit.

6. What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your books?

To trust myself as a writer. I used to panic when I didn’t know absolutely everything that was going to happen, or when I couldn’t see the next scene. But I’ve learned that my brain keeps working on the problem subconsciously, and if I give it some time (usually just an hour or so, sometimes a night) the answer will come to me. Also, I’ve learned to trust talking my plot problem out loud. Sometimes my poor husband bears the brunt, or a fellow writer, and usually they can help me find a solution. And if not, just explaining myself tends to make me find an answer.

7. What authors or friends influenced you in helping you become a writer?

I used to call my high school best friend my editor. She read everything I wrote back then. We’re still best friends, and I know I can go to her with any writing problem. But once I became serious about getting published, and joined Romance Writers of America, I met a group of friends who’ve made all the difference to me, both professionally and personally. I have several writing groups, the Purples and Packeteers, who share everything with me and whose friendship I deeply value. Maggie Shayne and I met before we were published, and watching her enter the business a few years before me taught me so much. And she’s always been there to answer any questions. But I think the biggest influence for a writer is reading lots of other writers. And I wish I had time to do even more of that!

8. What does your family think about your career as a published author?

I’m lucky because they’ve always been there to support me, even through the thirteen years it took for me to publish my first book. Writing was what I loved, and my husband always treated it with importance, even when I wasn’t earning money at it.

9. Besides writing, what other interests do you have?

I love the outdoors, and I go for walks every day. When I can, I take to the woods with my husband and dogs for long hikes, or snowshoeing this time of the year. I’m a skier and an ice skater since childhood. As for indoor pursuits, besides reading, I love to watch TV, from comedies to competitive reality shows. I sing in the church choir, and I’ve recently returned to crocheting.

10. Can you tell us about what’s coming up next for you writing wise?

I’m hard at work on the next Valentine Valley novel, which will be published in February 2013. My next historical, written as Gayle Callen, will be published this August, entitled RETURN OF THE VISCOUNT.

1. Tell us about your newest release.

It’s called PRIME TIME and is the story of Laura who is feeling middle-aged, fat and hormonal (write what you know, they told me! ) when she unexpectedly gets involved with a daytime tv programme and everything changes. It’s billed as a romantic comedy but I like to think it makes some serious points too…

2. Can you tell us a little about your favorite scene in the story?

Well I drew on my own experiences of doing daytime TV so some of the scenes in the book are quite close to some of my funnier/more embarrassing moments.

3. When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

When I was about seven but it took me another 25 years to actually get down to it.

4. Tell us a little about your daily writing routine. Are you a plotter or pantser?

A bit of both. I long to be more organised and it must be wonderful to have the whole thing mapped out before you start. I usually have a start, and a pretty good idea of the end and have thought up a few key events that are going to happen along the way. But how that all joins up is something I sort out as I go.

5. What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?

My humour, I’m told…

6. What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your books?

What hard work it can be.

7. What authors or friends influenced you in helping you become a writer?

Oh gosh too many to mention – my writing friends are wonderful. In my book Wannabe a Writer? I talk about how important friends are. The chapter is entitled Friends Called Lynne – because lots of mine seem to be!

8. What does your family think about your career as a published author?

They roll their eyes. Seriously, my parents are very proud, my husband perks up when the cheques come in and my teenage son thinks it all slightly embarrassing.

9. Besides writing, what other interests do you have?

Reading, walking, baking bread, doing the crossword, eating out, drinking nice wine, waking up at four in the morning thinking: why did I SAY that??

10. Can you tell us about what’s coming up next for you writing wise?

Right now, I have to catch up on columns and hundreds of emails. But I may then start work on some more non-fiction. Though I also have this vague idea for another novel…

Grand Canyon National Park is known for its overwhelming size and its intricate and colorful landscape. Over time, the elements have scoured and carved the dramatically splendid Grand Canyon, known as one of the world’s seven natural wonders. The distance from the South Rim to the North Rim varies from half a mile to eighteen miles, and the canyon has a maximum depth of 6,000 feet. This great range in elevation allows for a variety of climate, flora, and fauna; of the seven life zones on the North American continent, four can be experienced within Grand Canyon.

Major John Wesley Powell

     The first documented expedition of the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon was accomplished by Major John Wesley Powell in 1869. Powell, a Civil War veteran with only one arm, and nine companions became the first men to journey 1,000 miles on the river, part of it through Grand Canyon. They braved rapids, heat, plummeting morale, and the loss of three men. Powell’s account of this expedition, Exploration of the Colorado River of the West and Its Tributaries, made him a national hero as well as brought the canyon to the attention of the country. The Paiutes called the plateau that the canyon cuts through ”Kaibab” or “Mountain Lying Down,” but it was Powell who first consistently used and published the name “Grand Canyon” in the 1870’s.

     The Colorado River, meaning “red” in Spanish, was named in 1776 by a Spanish missionary, Padre Francisco Tomás Garcés. It was a description of the brown, muddy river at the time. However, since the construction of Glen Canyon Dam in 1964 the river is now clear, clean, and cold.

     The river begins as a tiny stream in Rocky Mountain National Park, eventually flowing into Lake Powell, formed by the Glen Canyon Dam. Below the dam it begins its journey through Marble Canyon by joining with the Paria River. At the confluence of the Little Colorado River does the Colorado finally enter Grand Canyon National Park, flowing 217 miles until it reaches Lake Mead Recreation Area.

Captain John Hance

One of the most colorful characters in Grand Canyon history was Captain John Hance. Born in 1840, he served in both the Confederate and Union armies and is thought to be the first non-Native American resident of the Grand Canyon. Arriving in 1883 he first attempted mining asbestos, but failed due to the expense of removing it from the canyon. He soon started giving tours, opening the first tourist trail in the Canyon in the late nineteenth century. He’s credited with carving a number of trails which often followed old American Indian paths.

John Hance loved the canyon and remained until his death in 1919. In his memory there’s a Hance Trail, Hance Creek, Hance Canyon, Hance Spring, Hance Mine, Hance Rapid, and a Hance’s Cove. He was famous throughout Arizona for his tall tales. In one, he stated that the Colorado River got so muddy that the only way to quench his thirst was to cut a piece of water off and chew it.

The fact that Alistair and Connor had grown close only makes this more of a betrayal as far as Venus is concerned, and she makes the radical decision to cozy up to Connor to get the information. Radical, because for as long as she can remember, she and Connor have mixed like oil and water.

Her first step is to help Bridget O'Flynn, Connor's aunt, clean out her closet of vintage clothes and jewelry. While there, Venus discovers a rhinestone mermaid brooch, a copy of an original piece of jewelry that had been the main object stolen during a heist at Clayworth's department store thirty years earlier. Rather than take it on consignment for her store, Venus buys the piece for herself, dismissing Bridget's concerns that the jewelry is bad luck.

When an argument breaks out between Bridget and her fiancé Tony, Connor decides that it's up to him to mend the rift. The brooch that Venus is wearing was a gift from Tony to Bridget, and Connor is sure that Bridget will want it back. He goes to Venus's store to talk to her about it, only to find the place crawling with police investigating a break-in. He's always felt protective of Venus, and now is no exception, so Connor offers to help her out. Eventually Connor reveals his reasons for coming to see her, and they reluctantly come to an agreement: she'll help him with Tony and Bridget, if he'll look into the accusations against her father again.

The Smith sisters are back (see A BLACK TIE AFFAIR, January 2010) and once again battling the Clayworth men in ALL I WANT IS YOU. With her father's long-standing employment with John Clayworth and Company, Venus and her sisters are very familiar with the Clayworth family, but she and Connor have never really gotten along very well. That dislike turned to loathing when Connor was instrumental in her father's dismissal from the company. With both sides keeping quiet, she has no way of clearing his name, until she decides to get closer to Connor. As far as Connor is concerned, his feelings for Venus are complicated, and he's not one for showing feelings anyway. When they begin their investigations, they start to grow closer, but there are still plenty of obstacles in their way.

As if the recent troubles with her father aren't enough, Venus and Connor uncover a decades old mystery surrounding the mermaid brooch, and it becomes apparent that somebody is targeting Venus. Between the mysteries and the complicated relationship Venus and Connor share, the tale has plenty to offer and will keep readers turning the pages to the very end. ALL I WANT IS YOU is a book I highly recommend.

His brother's death left Christian Du Quesne penniless along with his title, the Duke of Scarborough. He is hoping to make some connections with wealthy Americans for investment purposes. He runs across Rumsford in New York , but they never liked each other. When he hears that the earl is getting married, he feels sorry for the unfortunate woman. He doesn't realize that Annabelle is a strong Southern woman with a mind of her own, determined to marry Rumsford.

Annabelle's uncle does not approve of Rumsford and is not happy to see Annabelle rush into marriage. He calls on Christian and offers him a small fortune if he can persuade Annabelle to either not marry Rumsford or persuade her to put it off for a few months. Because Christian needs money, he agrees to the scheme. He is amazed to see that Annabelle is such a beauty. Will he be able to convince Annabelle to break her engagement or take more time with her choice?

A beautifully written tale, TROUBLE AT THE WEDDING immediately catches the reader's interest and takes off running. You can't help but like Annabelle, but hope that she will take a little more time before she makes such a final and lasting decision. Christian is an engaging man, a charming scoundrel who has made his money playing poker, but now needs money to shore up his inheritance. He is a romantic hero that readers are sure to enjoy. Will he be able to talk sense into Annabelle? The attraction between them is strong—something that neither of them wants. All the secondary characters have minor roles with Annabelle and Christian on center stage.

Ms. Guhrke knows how to write an intriguing story, and TROUBLE AT THE WEDDING, with its delicious hero, is one of her best. The dialogue is delightful, the pacing excellent. It's a story readers will love but hate to finish, as love develops between the two major characters. Another winner for Ms. Guhrke!

(This is where any romance reader would go, “Ha!”)

Bella wasn't made for the restrictive life of a convent, even after her aunt became the Reverend Mother. Besides reliving her attack in nightmares, Bella dreams of her ardent hero returning for her and proclaiming his love. Then, after eight years, he comes back and right away shatters those dreams.

Luke doesn't mean to be hard; it's only that his soul is bitter after his bad experiences during the war.

Luke had promised his mother and youngest sister he'd be back in time for his sister's come-out ball, which means an immediate departure from the convent. His and Bella's first major conflict arises when she tells him she's not leaving Spain until she goes back to her home to check on her half-sister whom she'd left behind—even if it means meeting her nasty cousin Ramon.

Luke gives in, and the journey to England begins with a momentous detour.

BRIDE BY MISTAKE is another in Ms. Gracie's character-rich, fiery tales filled with emotion and passion leavened by charm and wit. In it, we glimpse some of the awful war in Spain and learn what Luke went through and why he feels guilt. We meet a varied assortment of minor characters: Cousin Ramon and Bella's sister, as well as the girls in the convent…and others. And of course, we have the developing relationship between our cool but honorable hero and our determined heroine…a fascinating battle of wits and reluctant attraction!

What a thrill it is to be visiting here at RomRevToday. Back in 2009, one of my first ever guest blog spots was on this blog, and so there’s a soft spot in my heart for it—not only because it’s so nicely curated but because I feel a little like I cut my teeth here. I’m thankful to the RomRev ladies for offering such a great place for new writers and for readers too!

Of course, flash forward a few years, and my fourth novel, A PROMISE OF SAFEKEEPING, has just hit the shelves. I’m a little wiser now than I was before, I think! And my writing is always improving. I’m particularly excited about A PROMISE OF SAFEKEEPING.

Here’s the scoop:

Nine years ago, Lauren Matthews prosecuted the case of a lifetime. But her error in judgment sent an innocent man to prison. Now Arlen Fieldstone’s finally been released, and Lauren has only one thing on her mind: asking forgiveness. But how can she make up for nine years of his life?

To get to Arlen, Lauren must first get through Arlen’s best friend, Will Farris. Will hasn’t forgotten Lauren from those days, and hasn’t forgiven her for destroying his best friend’s life. He is Arlen’s keeper—protecting him from suspicious neighbors as well as from Lauren.

In the steaming summer streets of Richmond, Virginia, three people’s lives collide. Lauren needs forgiveness. Arlen needs hope. And Will? He needs something too, something that no one can know—especially not Lauren…

Like all of my books, the core of this novel is love. There are two love stories in this book. The first is between Lauren and Will. Will might be my favorite hero yet. He’s strong on the surface, but he has a deep vulnerability that I can’t give away here. When the book opens, every woman he’s ever dated has run away from him. He is wary of Lauren at first—with good reason, since she put his best friend in jail. But when he warms to her, he begins to wonder if she might be the one woman who is strong enough to bear his secret, if he can bring himself to tell it.

The second love story is between Arlen (the ex con), and the wife who divorced him when he was pronounced guilty and sent to jail. Although it seems as if his ex betrayed him, he never gave up on her and never stopped loving her. He worries that nine years is an unbridgeable distance and that he has no future with the woman he once loved. But there’s hope: As much as he’s thinking about Eula, she’s thinking about him.

A PROMISE OF SAFEKEEPING isn’t what I would call easy reading. Don’t get me wrong—it’s not War And Peace. But it is dramatic, strongly emotional, and it tugs on the heartstrings. If you like this kind of book, I do hope you’ll check out PROMISE.

Maddie's passion is photography, and she was lucky enough to find a job with The Illustrated London News . The paper sent her to America to photograph the Wild West from a “woman's perspective.” After the sea voyage and the overland train ride, Maddie settled in the fading mining town of Heartbreak Creek, along with three other ladies she met on the train. Maddie travels the area by wagon accompanied by the elderly Mr. Satterwhite, sometimes known as Wall-eyed Willie. She has begun to make a name for herself with the photos she sends back to London .

Meanwhile, Angus's father and a brother die, leaving him heir to his remaining—and ailing—brother. Angus now carries the courtesy title of Viscount Ashby and is close to becoming Earl of Kirkwell. Always a dutiful sort, Angus decides he must find his wife and produce an heir of his own to safeguard the family legacy. He traces Maddie to Heartbreak Creek where his inquiries are met with a tough inquisition from her friends.

To give Angus his due, there are reasons for his neglect of Maddie, some of them injuries suffered in battle, and one a secret he's ashamed to reveal to anyone. His feelings for her come rushing back when they meet. Maddie is not indifferent to him, either, but she has never been happier with life than now…the freedom, the beauty of the territory and its stunning variety of light that so inspires her artistry. Angus doesn't really want the title, but duty calls loud and clear. Maddie would like to make a family with Angus but she doesn't want to give up her life in Colorado . Where does their marriage go from here?

The characterization is very well done. Maddie's inherent strength emerges as she is tested through loss and danger. Can a hard-headed soldier make compromises when he falls deeper in love with his woman? The rest of the cast are equally as well drawn; we've met most of them in the excellent HEARTBREAK CREEK, volume one in the Runaway Brides series. Rancher and temporary sheriff Declan Brodie appears with his four still wild children and his mail order bride, Edwina. Then there are Edwina's half-sister, former slave Prudence Lincoln, and the man who would like to “own” her, Thomas Redstone, a Cheyenne Dog Soldier. Several amusing scenes take place among the three so very masculine males, Angus, Declan, and Thomas. One would have to search far and wide for more alpha men; good thing they also have peaceful sides to their natures.

Many minor characters fill out the plot and add to the enjoyment, including Angus's faithful Irish wolfhound Tricks, and his deaf warhorse Lurch. A young man named Silas will mist many readers' eyes. And, oh, dear, I've left out hotel owner and woman of some mystery, former New Yorker Lucinda Hathaway. Luckily, she stars in the next Runaway Bride episode, BRIDE OF THE HIGH COUNTRY, coming soon.

I can't recommend both books highly enough with their emotion, humor, suspense, and all around great writing. Guess I'll give COLORADO DAWN a Perfect 10. J

1. Tell us about your newest release.

Self-made millionaire, Holly Charleston, has come a long way since her homeless days. Sometimes, she believes life would have been simpler before fortune and fame. But Holly guards her heart close and her assets closer. Once Holly thaws to Drakes seduction attempts, he finds himself in a position of protecting her from a hired mercenary or living the life he believes he earned. Drake realizes the challenge of stealing the diamond is nothing compared to the challenge of stealing Holly's heart.

2. Can you tell us a little about your favorite scene in the story?

My favorite scene is when my hero (Drake) takes my heroine (Holly) to a remote island, and they are bickering back and forth. Holly shoves Drake, and she losses her footing and then falls into a lagoon. Drake wants to laugh so bad, but he knows he can’t win her over that way, so he holds it in until she laughs first. I love that scene.

3. When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

I began toying with the idea for a few months after reading an article about Marie Laveau in the newspaper, and then hurricane Katrina hit my hometown. The nagging feeling to write completely took over me, not sure what happened, but I started writing once we got home from being evacuated, and I never stopped since.

4. Tell us a little about your daily writing routine. Are you a plotter or pantser?

Once was a pantser, and now I’m a hybrid. I do both. I get an idea and I just start writing. I normally write a chapter and then I stop. I take a look at what I wrote, and start plotting out twist and turns and I try to get to know my characters a little better too.

5. What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?

Writing Quirk? Hmm. Well, I have to write in different places because I get bored with my surroundings is a little quirky or not.

6. What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your books?

What didn’t surprise me? I think what surprises me most are the characters. You start with just a kernel of an idea, and then it blossom, and forms into a real person (character), one who readers can relate to. I love that.

7. What authors or friends influenced you in helping you become a writer?

That would be one hell of a list if I needed everyone. So, I’ll just name a few. First, my sister, she pointed out that I couldn’t head hop in the same paragraph. lol

Then I joined several critique groups, and now I’m with three awesome authors who took me under their wings. (Rachel, Shelly and Melissa).

8. What does your family think about your career as a published author?

When my mom was still alive, she would brag about me to everyone. Unfortunately, she never got a chance to read my first book. I should have given her the draft version.

My dad doesn’t say much, but my sister who is an avid reader, she loves that I write. She’s a beta-reader for me. It helps we grew up in my parents bookstore, she knows her stuff.

9. Besides writing, what other interests do you have?

What is there other than writing and reading? Okay, there are a few things…

I enjoy going to Saints football games (we do a mean tailgating party each week with the Korner Krewe). I love plotting parties with the Plot Luck crew. We meet once a month. (Oops, that was writing related.) Um, I love going to the fishing camp (in Louisiana) with my hubby and kids, that’s about it. Not so exciting, huh? I’m not a big shopper, but I do enjoy decorating. (Especially during the holidays.)

10. Can you tell us about what’s coming up next for you writing wise?

DIAMONDS will be released January 18th from Siren BookStrand. It’s a Contemporary erotic romance suspense, between a M/F. (I know, shock-shock. Don’t see those much anymore. lol) DIAMONDS is the first in a three book series called, The Stiletto Millionaire Club, set in Destiny, Florida. The series is about four friends who are smart and financially stable, until their lives are turned upside down.

After DIAMONDS, I’m writing the second in the series called PEARLS.

After that’s done, I hope to finish revising my paranormal romance, BURIED MAGIC. A Witch and Warlock series set in New Orleans.

Holly couldn’t sleep, so she took a shower and climbed back into bed. The phone rang just as she changed channels on the television. She answered. “Karen. I told you I’ll tell you everything later.”

“Everything?” Drake asked, his voice sounding sexy sleepy. “I hope not everything.”

Holly closed her eyes, mortified. “Of course not.” She paused. “I didn’t expect your call so soon.”

“I can call you later if you like.”

“No. Now is fine,” she said. Now was actually perfect.

He laughed, and the sound warmed her insides. “So what are you doing right now?”

“Talking to you.” Why was she smiling like a love-crazed teenager? She couldn’t do this. She couldn’t feel something for someone she’d just met. This was not like her. Nor was having sex on an island with a man she didn’t know without protection. This would never work out. It had heartache written all over it.

“When can I see you again?”

Damn her heart. She wanted to see him, too. She had a wonderful time with him. The best time in a very long time. And how could she not trust him after he’d found and then given her diamond back. If a man was after her money, he could have easily kept the diamond and she wouldn’t have known the difference. “Soon.”

“When?”

“I said soon.” She smiled.

“When?”

“You don’t give up do you?”

“No.”

She blew out a breath. “Hold on a sec.” She dropped the phone on the bed, stood, and bounced on the mattress like a ten-year-old, mouthing Yes! Yes! Yes! She calmly sat down and picked up the phone. “Um. Saturday looks open.”

“I can’t Saturday,” he said.

Her heart stopped for a second. “Oh.” She really wanted to see him. She hadn’t realized how much until he said he couldn’t see her on Saturday. “I don’t know. Let me look…”

He cut her off. “What about now?”

She froze. “Now? Right now?”

“That’s what I hoped you’d say. I’ll be there in ten.”

“Wait.” The phone went dead. “You need my address,” she said to no one.

She put the phone down, and it rang again. “Hello.”

“I need directions.”

She smiled, gave him directions, hung up the phone, and jumped out the bed. “What the hell just happened? You’re nuts, Holly.” She turned her straightener on, threw on a little powder and mascara, fixed the front of her hair, and twisted up the rest with a ponytail holder. Her mouth was full of toothpaste when the doorbell rang. She spit then pressed a button on the intercom system. “I’m coming.”

Holly threw on cotton shorts and a comfy T-shirt, then ran down the stairs. She swung the front door open and stared. Drake stood in front of her, sporting a leather motorcycle jacket, ripped jeans, and a plain white T-shirt. His black half-helmet hung in his hand. She peered around him. “You rode a bike? I didn’t hear you pull up.”

“Bev’s pretty sneaky.” He nodded toward his Harley.

She gestured for him to come in. “You named your Harley Bev?”

“Of course. Doesn’t everyone?” He placed his helmet near the door on a chair.

She shrugged and said, “I haven’t known anyone who owned a Harley.”

Drake took a step toward her. His fingers pushed a few loose hairs behind her ear, and she shivered beneath his magical touch. “Well, now you do.”

Her insides quivered. She wished he’d kiss her right now. The suspense was killing her. She inched forward and placed her hand on his waist. They studied each other for a short moment. His gaze swept down over her. She felt more comfortable, more alive with him than anything.

He raised her chin with his finger and lowered his mouth to hers.

BIO:

Dawn Chartier never knew she wanted to be a writer while growing up. Sure her parents owned a book shop, and she was surrounded by bookworms, but she wasn’t one of “those” writers who started early. No, Dawn was inspired by strange events in her life, one was a bitch named, Katrina. Yes, that hur-ricane. But a few months before the storm, Dawn read an article on Marie Laveau in the New Orleans local newspaper and it sparked an idea. She began researching the voodoo priestess, and then Katrina hit. Out of destruction, ideas formed, characters spoke and plots twisted. One thing lead to another and an author was born. (Must have been something in the air, because a few authors were born out of Katrina’s wrath.)

Dawn Chartier sold her first paranormal romance book, (Not An Angel) to The Wild Rose Press, and her second book, a contemporary erotic romance (Diamonds) to Siren BookStrand. After the emotional ending of the previous novel, HARD BITTEN, Merit and readers alike have been left in turmoil. But Chicago isn't about to give Merit any time to deal with the pain. Horrible things are happening, and Merit just wants to get past her grief and move on to the next problem. But something, and someone in particular, is haunting her dreams, and each nightmare is worse than the previous one. Readers of the Chicagoland Vampires series will easily empathize with Merit's predicaments, because author Chloe Neill inspires that connection with her characters.

DRINK DEEP is another fabulous addition to the series, and with its fast paced plot and emotional roller coasters, it is well worth a Perfect 10 rating. Ms. Neill has the type of writing style that will really suck you in, and her characters are so real and wonderfully developed that a reader feels, as well as hopes, that they are truly walking around somewhere. It's no wonder the Chicagoland Vampires series has such a loyal following, and author Chloe Neill has made me join the ranks!

For full comprehension of the storyline, it is advised that interested readers start with book one in the series, SOME GIRLS BITE (APRIL 2009). However, the author does an excellent job with catching the audience up on the storyline if you wish to skip ahead. Be on the lookout for the next novel in the series, BITING COLD, coming August 2012.

A PARTY TO REMEMBER

    I love New Year’s Eve. When I was younger, I was pretty much a wallflower who sat home year after year. I would watch the glass ball going down in Times Square and wish I was there. As an adult I’ve tried to make up for all those lost New Year’s Eves and rarely miss going out on the town.

     I love to dress up in black sequins and high heels, and am fortunate that my husband is a knockout in a tuxedo. One of my favorite New Year’s parties was in Beverly Hills. I was invited to a function that was the height of elegance and even had celebrities in attendance. I remember seeing Hugh O’Brien, who used to be Wyatt Earp on TV, a really gorgeous guy back then, and Faye Dunaway, who was class personified.

     For me New Year’s Eve is champagne and romance, and being a romance writer, why wouldn’t I adore it?

This year, besides going out on the town, I’ll be celebrating the re-release of one of my all time favorite books--HOT RAIN. The hero, Jake Dawson, would look gorgeous in a tux--or better yet, nothing at all. Allie Parker is blond and sexy, and the chemistry between them burns. Jake’s an undercover agent working to catch a gang of drug smugglers. Unfortunately, Allie Parker believes he’s one of the thugs who have taken her prison and stashed her on the yacht they are taking to Mexico.

     Jake has a helluva time keeping Allie safe and at the same time playing the roll of her captor. There’s a lot of humor in this one, which is why my readers chose it back when it first came out as their all-time favorite.

     The book has been out of print for nearly ten years, so I’m hoping readers who haven’t had a chance to read it will give it a try. It’s got a fabulous new cover and will be out in e-book format for the first time ever.

So Gabe is killing two birds with one stone! Convincing Virginia will be the difficult part. She is not interested at all.

There is also another issue that Gabe would like cleared up. When his parents died under strange circumstances, he was just a little boy. He remembers a man who came to the stable the day his mother and father died, a man who knew his name, borrowed a horse, and rode off—but no one knows who he was. Was he involved in the double deaths?

The fourth novel in the Hellions of Halstead Hall series, TO WED A WILD LORD is entertaining, exciting, and filled with romance. Virginia and Gabe are like oil and water at first, and it seems at times that Virginia will never allow Gabriel into her heart. There's plenty of action, a mystery to be solved, and a really excellent love story.

Scotsman Jamie Fraser has been a parolee at the Helwater estate in England since being released from prison after the Jacobite Rising. Then there is the arrival of an old friend, Tobias Quinn, who was active in the Rising. Quinn wants to get Jamie to help him find a cup that will bring the Irish together to overthrow the English. Jamie flatly refuses, not wanting to have anything to do with any more wars or death. But other people are going to get Jamie involved in much more than he can imagine.

Lord John Grey has a history with Jamie Fraser—a history that involves the prison, getting him paroled to Helwater, but also there is the small fact that Grey is very attracted to Jamie. And that is something that infuriates the Scot. So when Grey is forced by his older brother, the Duke of Pardloe, to pair up with Fraser to investigate a fellow army officer for corruption, he must turn to Jamie to explain the papers that were found implicating the officer. Jamie is far from happy being torn from the farm and his son, but especially to be teamed with Lord John to investigate something that may be more explosive than initially thought.

The trip to Ireland is anything but pleasant, with Jamie horrendously seasick, and when Tobias Quinn shows up on the scene, things get a lot more complicated. He is determined to recruit Jamie to the Cause, and would dearly love to do away with Lord John. Caught in the middle, Jamie has to use his cunning, logic, and, of course, honor to keep everything in perspective.

It's one adventure after another in this excellent novel that bridges the gap between the battle of Culloden in DRAGONFLY IN AMBER—when Claire leaves Jamie for safety in her time—to the next book (VOYAGER). THE SCOTTISH PRISONER combines a bit of the Lord John stories where he is involved in several investigations, and the original Outlander books. Jamie's past comes back to haunt him, and his dogged determination not to be dragged into another Rising is crucial to the outcome of their journey. Lord John's assignment to bring back a fellow officer for a court martial weighs heavy on him since this very man is the one who saved his life in Canada .

Once you get into this story, it's so difficult to put the book down. Written in Ms. Gabaldon's usual style, readers will enjoy the fact we get to see Jamie in a different light, one without Claire, but with her always in his heart and mind. I like Lord John; he's an enigma in many ways, but is as brave and honorable as his Scottish counterpart.

1.Tell us about your newest release.

ONCE A MISTRESS is an homage to the swashbuckler movies of Errol Flynn and Tyrone Power. It's full of derring-do and pirates and swordfights, and it's just a little over the top like those old favorites from Hollywood's golden age. I used to watch those movies on Sundays growing up.

Here's the quick summary: In 1680 Jamaica, Diana Covington is the daughter of a wealthy shipping magnate. Even though she knows someday she'll be promised in marriage to some noble gentleman, she dreams of the adventures to be found with the pirates she hears so much about. But then she is jolted to the reality of what a pirate really is when she is abducted by the villainous Marcus to be held as part of a blackmail scheme against her father. She is rescued from Marcus's clutches by El Moreno, the Black Spaniard, a pirate who'd featured in some of her fantasies. But El Moreno has no intention of letting her go, and she wonders if she has jumped from the pan into the fire...

El Moreno is really Alex Rawnsley, a man with a personal grudge against Marcus. When he first started this masquerade, he'd only had one goal--find Marcus and bring him to justice. But now that beautiful, passionate Diana is on his ship and close under hand, he finds his focus wavering between desire for revenge on Marcus and desire for the temptress in his bed.

This book is one of my favorites because it was the very first book I ever wrote. It was published in print back in 1999 by Avon Books and is now finding new life as in e-book form from Samhain's new Retro Romance line.

2. Can you tell us a little about your favorite scene in the story?

One of my favorite scenes is when Alex walks in on a cat fight between Diana and his ex-mistress, Rosana. For all that Diana is gently bred, she's no wimp living in Jamaica. The city of Port Royal was pirate central for many years, and my girl had to learn to handle herself in that kind of environment!

3. When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

I think it started in first grade when we had to re-tell one of Aesop's fables, and I kept changing the ending. I consciously got the writing bug about ten years later in junior high. A few years after that, as an adult, I decided to truly give writing a shot with the goal of publication.

4. Where do you get your information or ideas for your stories?

Ideas for stories are everywhere. Writers are like sponges, absorbing everything around them and then presenting things back to the world with a different spin. I get a lot of ideas from current headlines, even for historicals.

5. What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?

Just one? Most writers have a few quirks, but one for me is that I get great ideas if I am doing something with water. Washing the dishes, taking a shower--these are when stories start to fall into place in my head.

6. What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your books?

That I tend to have the same sorts of recurring themes in my books. I love secret identities (see pirate hero above). Also, unless the plot dictates otherwise, my characters tend to only have one living parent. Beats me why!

7. What authors or friends influenced you in helping you become a writer?

Nora Roberts was a huge influence for me. I was lucky enough to join Romance Writers of America early on, and I had a lot of support from the other writers I met there.

8. What does your family think about your career as a published author?

They're very supportive and tell all their friends when I have a new book out. Many of my family members are readers as well.

9. Besides writing, what other interests do you have?

Most of what interests me has to do with stories, like TV and movies. I've also taken on the hobby of tracing my family tree. I'm really into it, and I think it's because I can imagine the stories around the people I am finding.

10. Can you tell us about what’s coming up next for you writing wise?

I have two more Retro Romances coming out: DONOVAN'S BED in February and THE LAWMAN'S SURRENDER in April. Those are both humorous Westerns. I also have a new contemporary paranormal series coming out in late 2012 from Tor Paranormal Romance about the descendents of the survivors of Atlantis and their cool psychic powers. I'm very excited about all of them!

Q&A with Rose Anderson!

1. Tell us about your newest release.

First off, I’d like to say thank you for hosting me this week!

My most recent novel in print, Dreamscape, released over the summer. The story is unusual in that it stretches across genres. First of all it’s classified as a contemporary erotic romance. It’s a ghost story, and in a way, a time travel too, but it’s also a mystery and suspense. As if that’s not enough to chew on, I’ve loaded it with clues hinting at a story running behind the scenes. I was a big fan of Agatha Christie who often put details hinting at the outcome right out in the open for readers to trip over. I had fun writing it and my hope is my readers will enjoy the Easter egg hunt I’ve set before them. I’ve even left you all a clue to the truth right here too! :)

2. Can you tell us a little about your favorite scene in the story?

Without giving too much away, I’ll start with the blurb so visitors here will have some background to go by.

Blurb:

Unable to deny his own translucence, Dr. Jason Bowen determines his lack of physical substance could only mean one thing—he’s a ghost. Murdered more than a century before, Jason haunts his house and ponders the treachery that took his life. When Lanie O’Keefe arrives with plans to renovate her newly purchased Victorian mansion, Jason discovers, ghost or not, he’s still very much a man. Despite its derelict condition and haunted reputation, Lanie couldn’t be happier with her new home, but then she has no idea a spirit follows her every move throughout the day and shares her captivating warmth at night. Jason soon discovers he can travel through Lanie’s dreams and finds himself reliving the days before his murder with Lanie by his side. It took one hundred and twenty years for love to find them, but there’s that insurmountable little matter of Jason being dead.

Once Jason realizes he can ride Lanie’s dreams to his time period, he looks for every opportunity to do so because he has no recollection of his murder and not knowing has dogged him for one hundred and twenty years. My favorite scene takes place in Jason’s past where he and Lanie overhear a conversation between his wife and her accomplices as they plot his death and the reason for it.

When I wrote this portion of the story, it was Muse possession. My Muse grabbed my brain and the scene poured onto my laptop. It was one of those moments where a writer really has no idea where the words are coming from. It was exhilarating creativity. The kind that makes you shake your head and say, wow that’s good. Did I just write that?

3. When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

In high school. I had an honors English class and the teacher set the theme for a composition after we’d read The Hobbit by J. R. R. Tolkien. I wrote about a dragon waiting on her egg to hatch. That first composition put me in the zone. It basically wrote itself. The teacher kept it with praise saying I needed to pursue writing. I didn’t take her seriously but I did take journalism classes and got on the school paper because of her. Boy I wish I still had the dragon story. I have a perfect dragon illustrator and I’d publish it. But I wrote it a zillion years ago before zerox and computers allowed you to copy anything with ease. As a student, I wasn’t about to write the thing out by hand twice! It wasn’t until my son was little that I started writing again with a seven book series to teach him to read. I’ll publish that one of these days too

4. Tell us a little about your daily writing routine. Are you a plotter or pantser?

Oh definitely a fly by the seat of my pants gal. I’ll have a general idea but that’s all. My characters write themselves. I just help with coloring their world. When I write I’m either an eavesdropper or a voyeur!

I write at least six out of seven days a week – all day and occasionally into the night. My butt’s taken on the shape of the chair. I’d recently read how dangerous is it to sit all day so now I’m attempting to take breaks and walk the treadmill. If I could figure out how to tape my laptop to the threadmill I would!

5. What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?

Quirk? Hmm…I don’t know that I do anything other writers don’t. Perhaps carry on character conversations with myself in my head? I say that because the voices aren’t even mine. LOL

6. What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your books?

Within the realm of writing I’d say it’s falling into that zone I mentioned above. Hours will pass when I’m composing from that mindset. I once knocked out seven chapters in one sitting because the words were just flowing. Outside the realm of actual writing, it has to be discovering promotion was going to take up more time than I ever imagined. I wish that wasn’t the case because there’s only so much creativity in my head each day. It tends to sap the creative spark.

7. What authors or friends influenced you in helping you become a writer?

My husband is a fabulous essayist. He’s the one that got me into writing. We use to play Dungeons and Dragons role play online back in the old AOL chat room days. The first time he read a scene I’d written, he looked at me with surprise and said, “I had no idea you wrote fiction so well.” Like I said, I only wrote in high school. He’d never seen any of that stuff and my son’s how-to-read books were very simple things. Believing I could do this, he found a contest for me to enter. I won. :)

8. What does your family think about your career as a published author?

Beyond the teasing Mom writes smut comments they occasionally toss out, they tell me they’re very proud. I only recently came out of the closet so to speak. They were floored that I did this without anyone knowing. My son so eloquently put it this way, “Mom, you can’t even keep Christmas presents a secret, how did you keep this to yourself?” Every once in a while I get the last laugh.

9. Besides writing, what other interests do you have?

Oh gosh, I’m a dabbler from the word go. I regularly get involved in off the wall things. One of my loves is world drumming. I’m a master level Reiki practitioner. I’m a copper rod dowser. I also wilderness canoe and spelunk (cave exploration). I’m fascinated by philosophy and world religions, as well as by labyrinths and earth energies (goes with dowsing). There are too many interests to list I’m afraid. I like trying new things that test and stretch me as a person.

10. Can you tell us about what’s coming up next for you writing wise?

I have a two-book story coming soon about a three thousand year old shape shifter. I think to date it’s my best. Book one is already done and I’m bearing down on book two. I can’t decide to traditionally publish or self-publish. My author’s group has several self-published authors doing very well for their efforts. Decisions, decisions.

She's strangely drawn to northern Maine through a brochure about the TorStone Mountain Ski Resort. Jessie travels by car from Atlanta accompanied by her good friend Merissa as well as Toby, her one-hundred pound service dog. They check into the lodge where Ian MacKeage works in the family business, but it's not there Jessie meets the man who is to awaken long dormant feelings. That waits until she, Merissa, and Toby go to town and stop in at Pete's bar and Grill. As Mer, who never hesitates to speak her mind, remarks, the place is filled with large, testosterone-laden males. In no time, Mer hooks up with one (Duncan MacKeage) leaving Jessie with Ian.

Jess is thrilled to be dancing for the first time in years. The doctor's told her she would probably never walk again, but after a time wallowing in despair and with the help of Merissa who was her nurse in the hospital, Jess turned into a fighter. It doesn't hurt that she feels so safe in Ian's arms.

Ian can't recall the last time he was so attracted to a woman, certainly none since he returned from the war. Jess is a bit of a mystery. Why would a successful city girl up and move to this remote location? He's even more curious when he accidentally witnesses her going through some kind of seizure…a flashback perhaps to a terrible episode in her past? Ian knows about such things. He, too, wrestles with demons and has a difficult choice to make.

In spite of Jess's wounds and Ian's withdrawal since his return, HIGHLANDER FOR THE HOLIDAYS is an engaging, often lighthearted story. Jess is sassy with an inner core of strength. Ian is definitely an Alpha male but with compassion and tenderness. Merissa can be brash, but she's the best friend a girl could have. She soon leaves to go home to Georgia , but one can only hope we'll see her again sometime.

Other characters take important parts in this tale. Many are from previous books in the Highlander series, the several MacKeages, MacBains, Gregors, and Stones. One important personage is the magical creature going by the name of Roger who seems to be a manipulator nudging our hero and heroine toward their fates. And we can't forget Tobias Pringle, familiarly known as Toby. If one-hundred pounds of Rottweiler can be termed lovable, it is he.

Janet Chapman somehow combines humor, warmth, suspense and romance with an underlying magic as she matches the basically old-fashioned Highlander ethos with today's emancipated woman.

A very entertaining tale, TOO WICKED TO WED is the first in the Lords of Midnight trilogy. Well drawn characters, an interesting plot, and plenty of passion kept the pages turning. Alexa and Connor are worthy opponents, and even more worthy partners as they try to unravel the mystery at the Wolf's Lair. Excellent and well rounded secondary characters, both friend and foe, make for a superb tale.

1. Tell us about your newest release.

HOLD ME, THRILL ME, ENTICE ME, trilogy of novellas, tell the story of the
three Caldwell sisters as they travel across the world in search of the father they thought dead, finding love and danger on the way. These are sensual romances, except for the final installment, ENTICE ME, which is a little sweeter. Each sister is different. Jane is well-dressed and out of her depth, Margo is a kick-ass police officer who braves her fear of open water to save her new lover, and Allison is the baby of family who melts the heart of a battle-worn ex-Navy SEAL. All of them have drive and devotion to family. These are women worth spending time with.

2. Can you tell us a little about your favorite scene?

Margo (the detective) throwing the keys of a drunk driver into the ocean,calling the cops, then making a run for it so she could catch her flight.

3. When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

After the birth of my daughter two years ago.

4. Tell us a little about your daily writing routine. Are you a
plotter or pantser?

Used to be a pantser until I wasted several months writing three hundred pages of unusable manuscript...now I plot!

5. What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?

Humor. A lot of curse words. :)

6. What was one of the most surprising things you learned in
creating your books?

That as I wrote Margo's story and made her a detective, I was really yearning to be her.

7. What authors or friends influenced you in helping you become a
writer?

Savvyauthors.com is a wonderful place to learn and meet with other writers, agents and publishers.

8. What does your family think about your career as a published
author?

My parents are not allowed to read my work. It's far too racy!!! :)
However, they think it's a great accomplishment.

9. Besides writing, what other interests do you have?

I do crossfit, Jiu Jitsu, kick-boxing and running.

10. Can you tell us about what’s coming up next for you writing wise?

I'm leaving writing behind for a while as I go off to become my dream: a police officer. I start in December.

Guest Blog: Olivia Kingsley on HEROES AND COURTSHIP

Let's face it: women like to be chased. Since the age of chivalry and courtly love, it's been the norm for a man to woo the woman he wants. In modern times, of course, it's perfectly acceptable for the woman do the chasing, but on the whole I believe it's still more common that the man is the one who pursues.

As long as the attentions are at least somewhat welcome and doesn't cross the line into outright stalking, we love it. And why not? Being pursued makes you feel wanted and desirable. It's flattering and exciting. Under the right circumstances, it makes the man seem more attractive, since going after what you want is an indication of strength and determination, and strong men are undeniably sexy.

In my novel, PRETTY PERSUASION, the hero, Robert Balfour, returns from spending nearly a decade on his family's sugar plantation in the Caribbean, ready to marry and settle down. After getting reacquainted with the heroine, Georgiana Montford, to whom he's been informally engaged since childhood, he decides that she's the one he wants. But Georgie has different plans altogether, and so the chase is on.

When writing a story where the hero spends quite a bit of time actively courting the heroine, I found it a challenge to not go too far and make readers dislike him or her...or both! Despite having convinced herself she doesn't want to marry, Georgie can't hide her emotional and physical attraction to Robert, which of course encourages him to think he can win her over. But as she continues to refuse him, how long can he keep pursuing her without sacrificing his dignity?

I've heard many modern versions of such courtship, true stories from friends, family and other acquaintances. I've also heard stories of men (and women) taking the chase too far, giving attention where it's not wanted. It's a very fine line to walk, I think. Being pursued can be wonderful; being stalked is not.

I'm curious, have you ever been chased, and if so, did you like it? Do you prefer being pursued, or do you like to do the chasing yourself? How do you feel about a romance novel hero who goes to great lengths to woo the heroine?

On the way to the wedding, Alaric's cavalcade is attacked, and all his warriors are killed. He escapes, but severely wounded. He wakes seeing what he believes to be an angel.

Ewan, with a troop of clan members, finds Keeley and Alaric. The laird abducts Keeley to the McCabe keep so she can continue to heal Alaric, and then he insists she stay and help deliver his wife's baby. While Keeley treats Alaric, they fall in love. Both know their future together is doomed because Alaric is promised to another, a duty he cannot shirk because the clan's survival depends upon his sacrifice.

One aspect I loved about this story was the situations' unpredictability, and the many twists and turns will keep readers turning pages. Keeley is in an untenable position; the man she loves is going to marry the much loved cousin who Keeley believes turned her back to Keeley's troubles. Alaric also has a dilemma. How can he love and protect Keeley, when he is sworn to marry Rionna? How can he keep his honor and best serve his clan? The characters, including secondary McCabe clansmen, are delightful. While the setting is typical Scottish historical, the story is not. EDUCATION OF A HIGHLAND LASS is the second book in the McCabe Trilogy. It is preceded by IN BED WITH A HIGHLANDER, Laird Ewan's story, released in August. Youngest brother Caelen's story is to be revealed in NEVER LOVE A HIGHLANDER, an October release. A series for Scottish romance addicts to relish.

Anna Ross heads home to Kasota after picking up a wagon load of whiskey for her saloon. She and her little one-eyed dog, Jack, are snuggling to keep warm when Jack, with a frantic bark, jumps off the wagon to plow through the snow. Anna can only go after him. In this way, Anna and Jack save the life of an Eastern greenhorn. The trek through the worsening blizzard is an arduous one, but easy banter—helped by the warming whiskey—fosters a sort of closeness between Anna and Trey, as she calls him. They eventually see the lights of the Hentons' place, where a pre-Christmas party is being held. The Hentons are friends of Anna's, but she knows not all of their guests would welcome her, but they have no choice. They are stuck at the party until the weather abates.

Hardships can either bring out the best or the worst in people. Naughty or Nice shows it can also work for the betterment in the inspiring conclusion.

The Christmas Bell – Linda Broday
There are some in Kasota who think that, because she's the banker's daughter who has turned down more than one suitor, Tess Whitgrove must be a snob. Few know what she has done for the town. Now, however, she wishes to prove herself by bringing home the new church bell the whole town raised money to have cast back east. But the train is blocked by huge drifts across the tracks.

Reclusive rancher Sloan Sullivan goes out of his way to avoid Tess Whitgrove whenever he has to go to town. Even were he aware how intriguing she finds him, he would do nothing. Didn't his mother always warn him against mixing with the upper class? But when he sees from his ranch that the train is marooned, he cannot ignore the passengers and crew. Sloan loads up a horse-drawn sled with food, blankets and firewood. He finds a mixed bag of people including four little orphans, escorted by an unpleasant woman; a sick man, an expectant mother near term, and an angel of mercy tending all those in need…the woman who haunts his dreams.

Once again, we are graced with a heart-warming holiday tale of finding love in seemingly unlikely places.

Away in the Manger – Phyllis Miranda
In this tale, our hero looks only for a peaceful and quiet Christmas, the anniversary of a tragic day in his life. But once again, one of the worst storms in the Texas Panhandle's history blows in a surprise. Blacksmith Randall Humphrey is a big bear of a man. The novellas stand alone, but are connected by the setting and the perils of the storm. They all manage to deliver delightful, well-developed main characters along with a few not so nice ones. While the plots involve various threads of suspense, the character interactions hold center stage.

I highly recommend A TEXAS CHRISTMAS for your holiday reading pleasure.

1. Tell us about your newest release.

First of all, thank you for allowing me to be here today, Patti. My newest release is also my debut release, “Cry Wolf” from Carina Press.
My heroine, Andrea Lockhart, is a feisty tabloid reporter sent to a rural town in South Carolina where the residents have been reporting sightings of a werewolf — not that she believes for a second that werewolves exist. But trouble has a way of finding Andrea, and no sooner does she set foot in the small town than trouble finds her in the form of Sean Hunter, her former college crush and journalism school nemesis. Andrea wants nothing more than to hightail it out of the place, but no way is she gonna let Sean scoop her again, on anything! So what if he’s even hotter than she remembered? What’s a girl to do? Team up with her competitor to keep an eye on him, of course! Sean is 100 percent male and more interested in getting to know his old classmate now that she’s blossomed into a woman than he is in any story investigation. Then again, there is the fact that people are seeing something in the small town…
“Cry Wolf” could be described in so many ways. It’s a mystery, but it’s also a contemporary romance. There’s a dash of the paranormal. There are even a few scary bits, and one or two scenes that will probably get a chuckle out of you.

2. Can you tell us a little about your favorite scene in the story?

Oh my gosh, just one? I’ll have to go with the opening scene, where my heroine finds herself in an, ah-hmm, odd predicament before meeting the hero. To try to get some of the accuracy, I spent a lot of time hanging upside down off my bed to be able to describe how she was feeling. My cat thinks I’m a lunatic for doing it, but as kooky as it sounds, I actually had a lot of fun doing that piece of research!

3. When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

I can’t remember a time when I didn’t want to be a writer. When I was very young, I would go to the movies with my older brother and come home and rewrite my own version of what we just saw, and then act it out with my stuffed animals. My mother, who died from breast cancer when I was 12, always encouraged me to write stories for her enjoyment, and after she died, I tended to escape my grief a lot through books, movies and writing. I went into journalism because it was one of the few writing careers I could convince my father I would be able to earn a steady paycheck from. I just couldn’t envision making a living doing anything else.

4. Tell us a little about your daily writing routine. Are you a plotter or pantser?

I work full-time – as a newspaper reporter – so I am always writing in one regard or another. I usually write my fiction stories late at night. I’m a night owl, and that’s when my creative juices start flowing, and I’ve been known to stay up until 5 or 6 a.m. when I’m on a roll. I’m more of a pantser than a plotter. I come up with the characters and a basic plot, and let it all unfold as I type. Once I have a first draft complete, that’s when I go back and make sure there are no plot holes you can drive trucks through.

5. What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?

It’s probably the norm – I hate to be bothered when I’m deep into writing a story. I’m really good at blocking out everything (sounds, people, hunger, etc.) when I’m writing. I can become a real bear and have been known to growl if someone interrupts me when I’m hearing my muse.

6. What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your books?

This is probably going to sound stupid. When I was a much younger, more naive writer, I used to think I could craft a completely original idea from scratch without being influenced from someone else’s previous work, period. I’ve since realized there are few, if any, completely original ideas floating around my brain – they are all inspired by people I know or other works, some good and some bad. Every time I think I’m onto an original idea, it hits me that someone could easily make a comparison between it and something else. I usually slap my head and have a “D’oh!” moment. And then I try and find a way to take that idea, put a fresh spin on it, and make it my own.

7. What authors or friends influenced you in helping you become a writer?

I don’t think it ever occurred to me I could actually write a book until I began reading Harlequins in college. I remember enjoying books by Lynne Graham and Maggie Shayne so much that I went online and looked the authors up. I believe it was Maggie Shayne who had a “tips for aspiring authors” page on her website. I checked out some of the books she recommended, read them, and just began writing for fun. Granted, it took me a while to actually finish my first book, but I am blessed with some incredibly supportive friends who kept cheering me on, telling me I could do it. Since then, I’ve also found some wonderful critique partners, some of whom are published, such as Pamela Hearon.

8. What does your family think about your career as a published author?

I’m not married, and it has taken me a while to “come out” as a romance novelist to my dad and brothers, simply because I’m not used to being the center of attention (it terrifies me, actually) and I anticipated a lot of jokes. My 21-year-old niece was on vacation with me in NYC when I got “the call” from Angela James at Carina Press, and for some wacky reason, now seems to be following in my career footsteps. She’s studying creative writing and hopes to be an author someday herself. After I sent one of my brothers the link to my book, he proudly pasted it as his Facebook status within 10 minutes, telling everyone his little sister was gonna be published and “how about that?”

9. Besides writing, what other interests do you have?

I am a huge film buff and dabble in amateur filmmaking. I’ve even worked as a production assistant on some TV shows, short film projects and commercials. Aside from reading books of all genres (including comic books!), I love to escape my worries in a dark theater or a great TV show. I also love animals.

10. Can you tell us about what’s coming up next for you writing wise?

I just completed a novel that I’m hoping to submit to publishers soon. It’s the first in a planned trilogy. It’s a paranormal and very different from “Cry Wolf,” but it also features werewolves. It has an epic fantasy premise that early readers say they have really enjoyed.

1. Tell us about your newest release.

Night Hawk is western and my 25th release from Avon Books. The hero is a gun totin’, Bible quoting bounty hunter known as the Preacher. The heroine, Maggie Freeman is a young woman falsely accused of killing a man. She meets Preacher when he’s given the task of taking her by train to Denver to stand before a judge. Neither are who they appear to be on the surface, and as the adventure takes them across the country, the sparks fly and passion blooms.

2. Can you tell us a little about your favorite scene in the story?

I don’t have a particular favorite, because every scene with Maggie stands out. She’s feisty, charming, and a take no prisoners kind of lady. I had a ball writing her story.

3. When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

The writing has always been in me. I was the editor of my elementary school newspaper in the 4th grade. The Jones School Comet! However, all I ever really wanted to do was work in a library.

4. Tell us a little about your daily writing routine. Are you a plotter or pantser?

I am a pantser. I love the surprises this form of writing brings to my stories.

5. What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?

Not sure if it’s a quirk but I usually do my writing after dark. In the early days of my career working at night was a necessity because I was a wife and mother with two growing children. Now that I’m a widow and the kids are grown and gone, writing at night is still the way.

6. What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your books?

Because I do historicals, the research always comes with surprises. In Night Hawk, one of Preacher’s friends is Chinese. The history of her people in America was a real eye opener for me.

7. What authors or friends influenced you in helping you become a writer?

I probably would never have been published had it not been for a friend named Laverne. After reading a manuscript of mine, she hounded me and hounded me to pursue publication and because I did, my very first Avon release, Night Song hit the stores in 1994. I will always be grateful to her and for her.

     8. What does your family think about your career as a published author?

My family loves having a writer in the family. My late husband was my biggest supporter, but no one is prouder than my mom. She reads all my work.

    9.      Besides writing, what other interests do you have?

I love gardening and am very active in my church. Also a BIG sports fan. Football in particular.

     10. Can you tell us about what’s coming up next for you writing wise?

Up next is the April release of the fourth book in my Blessings series – A Wish and A Prayer. This is a contemporary women’s fiction series that began with the first book Bring on the Blessings. I’ll also begin writing the next historical which is scheduled for a fall 2012 release.

Abby and her suitors are delightful characters. The men's competition for Abby's hand is good natured; she's not telling them her choice until the day .

In a fast 260 pages, THE CHRISTMAS WEDDING also explores Abby's children and their families. Here is where some serious conflict arises, at least in the case of her oldest daughter. As in real life, all is not smooth sailing, but the story wraps up, as all holiday books should, on a light-hearted, happy note. For the most part, these are people one would be glad to call friends. Spend a few hours in their company in the coming season and enjoy!

2. Can you tell us a little about your favorite scene in the story?

This is part of my favorite scene:

The passage opened up and they moved through a large dim church filled with empty pews. Only a couple of candles lit the plain interior. Five of King James's retainers wearing royal livery waited near the pulpit along with a dour Protestant minister.

"What is happening?" Angelique asked.

"We are to be married, as you ken." Lachlan set her on her feet at the front of the church.

She pulled him aside. "Have you lost your mind? We cannot marry now. Not like this," she whispered loudly.

"Aye, 'tis necessary to marry in secret. Someone wishes to kill us. They are wanting your estate through any means, fair or foul." His harsh expression told her of the seriousness of the matter. "King James bid us to go ahead and marry. Now. We have the special license."

"But I must wear my wedding gown and I did not bring it. I will not marry in my shift and a blanket. Barefoot."

3. When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

After reading romance novels nonstop for about a year. After that first one, I was addicted. Then one day, as I was reading an especially hot, amazing hero, I thought why don't I create a story featuring my own hot, yummilicious hero? I could make him do whatever I want. LOL As I was learning to write, I wrote a contemporary romance first. I didn't want to overwhelm myself learning to write AND doing historical research. I wanted to take it one step at a time and learn the novel writing process right.

4. Tell us a little about your daily writing routine. Are you a plotter or pantser?

I'm a hybrid plotter/pantser but I probably lean more toward the pantser side. I find I have to know before starting what the hero's and heroine's goals, motivations and conflicts are. I need a broad overall vision of where the story is going so I'll know beforehand that it will work out in the end and have a tight, fast-paced plot where everything ties in together. After that bare bones framework, I let my imagination take flight.

5. What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?

I can't really share what I'm writing with anyone while I'm writing it. My muse insists that I keep it a secret until I'm finished. :)

6. What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your books?

At first, the idea of historical research intimidated me because I wanted everything to be spot on accurate. But once I went for it, I discovered the historical research wasn't so bad and I actually enjoyed it. One perk is research trips to Scotland. I find that my stories truly feel more Scottish since that first trip.

7. What authors or friends influenced you in helping you become a writer?

I was reading a Sandra Brown book when I said, hey, why don't I write a book? I don't know her but I have to say she inspired me to become a writer. As for friends, I have a wonderful critique group called Rebels I've been with for years. We always encourage and support each other on our writing journey.

8. What does your family think about your career as a published author?

My husband has always supported and encouraged me in my writing. He believed in me even more than I believed in myself at times. My parents and other relatives are happy about my publishing success.

9. Besides writing, what other interests do you have?

I enjoy photography, graphic art, hiking, swimming, jewelry making, travel, etc.

10. Can you tell us about what’s coming up next for you writing wise?

I'm working on the next Highlander novel in this series. It's about Lachlan's friend, Dirk, and a woman he meets in a mysterious way.
