Q&A with...Betty Midnight!

1. Tell us about your newest release.

Hadyn Heat is a new series I’m writing about a man who is also a werewolf. The first book explores his deepest urges, which are his sexual urges.

The entire book is based around urges…

Hadyn can’t help but break one of the biggest rules of his pack and follows his urge. This leads him to a beautiful woman but in the background, lurking, there’s an evil man named Valon. Valon has the urge to take over the world and to do so he must find a way for Hadyn to mate with his daughter, Sephy.

Now Hadyn must not only find a way to stop Valon, he must find a way to control his own urges.

2. Can you tell us a little about your favorite scene in the story?

The climax of the book was so much fun to write. I had the scene in my mind from the moment I started writing the book. Each time I went to the scene, either in a notebook or writing it out, I kept reminding myself to make it bigger and better. So it became a scene that involves love, sex, murder, fighting, and death…

3. Do you write about bad boys or good guys?

I like good guys. I always have and always will. I think good guys can have a bad boy side to them but they always conquer it, which makes them so much sexier.

4. When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

Wow, what a good question. I really don’t know. I always wrote, as long as I could remember. I always liked love stories and as I got older, I started to read some steamier romance novels which started to shift my focus towards that. Then I started toying with the idea of writing more erotic kind of works – stories that purpose but also have sex. When Hadyn came to mind I realized I had my outlet.

5. Tell us a little about your daily writing routine. Are you a plotter or pantser?

I try so hard to be a plotter, but face it, I’m a punster. I’ll have a few scene ideas and that’s about it.

6. What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?

I have to finish the scene I’m working on. I know some writers who will stop in the middle of a sentence so they are quickly motivated to get writing again. NOT ME! I need to finish the part I’m working on or it will bother me.

7. What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your books?

Writing really can be fun. Going from short erotic stories to a longer body of work is scary. I wrote Hadyn Heat with my friend, Ava Michaels, but the original idea and concept was all mine. To me, it seemed impossible to do what my favorite writers do… but you know? I did it. And it was fun.

8. What authors or friends influenced you in helping you become a writer?

I have a long list of those I love to read. I can go from Danielle Steele to Nicholas Sparks to Bella Andre even to Stephen King, if the story is right. I tend to pass on his older stuff. The closest friend I have in all this is Ava. She’s the one who helped me to expand some of the parts and write them with me.

9. What does your family think about your career as a published author?

I have a supportive group of friends and family. Writing the kind of stuff I do (with sex scenes) doesn’t always get the cheers and celebrations I imagine in my mind, but I’m happy to say that they support me.

10. Besides writing, what other interests do you have?

My favorite thing to do is read. Honestly. I’m probably such a boring person. I read, write, and no matter what I do, I always carry a notebook because you never know when an idea will strike.

11. Can you tell us about what’s coming up next for you writing wise?

The most important thing I have is to finish all of Hadyn Heat. It’s a four book series, so myself and Ava are hard at work with the series. I also have two stand alone erotic romance novels that I’m hoping to finish. One is a shapeshifter book like Hadyn Heat, but the other is about real people (along the lines of my novel Just the Sex, Please).

12. How can readers connect with you online?

I have a blog that I need to tend to more… http://www.bettymidnight.blogspot.com/

Happy Leap Day!

Leap Day is known for (among other things) as the one day when a woman can ask a man to marry her. As a reader of romance, I don't think I've ever read a romance where the woman asked the man to for his hand in marriage.

To celebrate the day this week, I'm giving away to one lucky wimner a $10 Amazon giftcard.

To enter, I have a question for readers...do you know any book where the heroine asks the man to marry her? If you don't that is fine, you can still enter.

One entry per person. Winner to be announced later this week.

Spotlight Review:

MY WICKED LITTLE LIES - Victoria Alexander
Zebra Books
ISBN-13: 978-104201-1706-6
ISBN-10: 1-4201-1706-8
February 2012
Historical Romance

London - 1886

Evelyn Hadley-Attwater, before her marriage to Adrian Hadley-Attwater, the Earl of Waterston, had performed dangerous missions for a secret government agency, the Department of Domestic and International Affairs. While she loved her work, and had a romantic interest in her boss, Sir, whom she had never seen, Evelyn met Adrian and fell in love. It was mutual, and they've had two blissful years of marriage. Now her contact with the agency, Maxwell Osgood, pulls her back in for one more job. Someone stole a file with the list of previous heads of the agency off his desk, putting those men in peril; indeed, one has already died. Sir's name is on that list, so Evelyn reluctantly agrees to a stealthy incursion into the desk of a very high-society man. Luckily, her affluent and titled husband gave her entry into the same society.

Adrian notices Eve's preoccupation. This hasn't happened before. Is she tired of him, of their marriage? He is Sir, quitting his position when he finally arranged a meeting with his future wife. Doubts plague him. His wife thinks him a composed, cautious nobleman, perhaps incapable of dealing with intrigue and danger. Does she love Sir better than him? When Max tells him Eve's mission, Adrian plans a situation that will expose the truth of where Eve's affections truly lie. He knows the cost might be more than he is willing to pay, but he has to know.

MY WICKED LITTLE LIES tells a story of romantic intrigue, and the lies of omission that plague a perfect marriage; perhaps not so perfect? An interesting romance occurs between Max and Evelyn's best friend Celeste DeRochette, who also once worked for the agency. An unseen plot twist evolves from the death of Evelyn's parents many years ago. The fast-paced plot is full of action, romance, and unique encounters, including a mixture of humor and danger fraught situations. Readers will enjoy the captivating and likable main characters as their pasts emerge. Their foibles only add to their charm and make an enjoyable and different take on a historical novel.

A Perfect 10:

SWEET ENEMY – Heather Snow
A Veiled Seduction Novel, Book 1
A Perfect 10
Signet Eclipse
ISBN: 978-0-451-23610-4
February 2012
Historical Romance

England – 1817

The Earl of Stratford, Geoffrey Wentworth, rushed home after an emergency message from his mother. Thinking something horrible had happened, Geoffrey had his worst fears confirmed when his mother admitted to inviting a large number of eligible females for a two week stay, in hopes of matching her son with a suitable woman. But Geoffrey, passionate about his political efforts to help war veterans, insists he can't be bothered with such a farce… At least until he sets eyes on the beautiful Miss Claremont.

Liliana Claremont doesn't want a husband, but she does want to know what Geoffrey's father had to do with her own father's death. Certain a clue to their connection has to be in Geoffrey's house somewhere, Liliana does her best to seem uninteresting so the Earl will leave her alone and give her more time to snoop through the house. But Liliana's charm works against her, and in no time Geoffrey finds himself unable to get her off his mind. But to someone who holds trust and honesty in such high regard, if Liliana's intentions come to light, would he be able to forgive her for her deception?

SWEET ENEMY combines romance, history, and intrigue into one excellent read. Liliana is a smart and driven woman. She knows what she wants, and she's not only willing to work hard to achieve it, but she's brilliant enough to figure out the best way to get things done. Her chemistry with Geoffrey is something special, and their early banter and misunderstandings lead to some very amusing scenes.

Readers won't be able to put SWEET ENEMY down. A fast paced plot and captivating characters make SWEET ENEMY a must read for all historical romance fans. Well deserving of the Perfect 10 rating, readers, myself included, will be eagerly anticipating another novel by this delightful author.

SWEET ENEMY is the first in a soon to be well-loved series. Historical Romance fans should be on the lookout for this book, as well as its upcoming sequel, SWEET DECEPTION, in August 2012.

Q & A with Ava Michaels

1. Tell us about your newest release.

HIS BODY, HIS BLOOD is a new series of mine, featuring a gay vampire hunter named Van Scott. Van’s a really cool bad ass kind of guy. He’s not someone you would look at and think he was gay, which just adds to his aura. He’s a secluded kind of man, dealing with a little bit of a haunted past that started when his father wouldn’t accept who he was.
The first book in the series is called Secrets and it has Van Scott protecting a man named Daniel Winters. Normally, protecting people is easy for Van. But there’s something about Daniel that Van can’t put his finger on. The organization Van works for gives him two warnings… (1) If Daniel Winters dies, the world ends and (2) Do NOT fall in love with Daniel Winters…
At first these rules seem pretty easy but it’s far from it as vampires start coming to kill Daniel. And the more Van spend times with Daniel, the more he feels his own urges starting to rage. In the end, it’s Daniel that perhaps has the biggest secret of all.

2. Can you tell us a little about your favorite scene in the story?

The final scene for sure. The book was made around the final scene. It’s a pure action scene where the entire story comes together in a way that it makes you unable to stop reading until you finish it.
I will add that in a very close second are the “hot” scenes… two men… yummy.

3. Do you write about bad boys or good guys?

What’s wrong with both? :)
I like men that look bad but have good hearts.

4. When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

When I was twelve and I wrote a short story about a girl who would write poetry and it would come to life. Don’t ask… it was a weird story, but it got the pen moving and since then it hasn’t stopped.

5. Tell us a little about your daily writing routine. Are you a plotter or pantser?

A little of both. I have a general outline I use. I have the obvious key points for the story and then I just run with it. I keep very detailed notes so the story doesn’t derail – especially with a series. I can’t quite say how many books HIS BODY, HIS BLOOD is going to be, so I’m sure to keep it all together.

6. What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?

Men enjoying each other’s company. As a woman, it just fascinates me… and turns me on.

7. What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your books?

How much I liked to write action scenes. I started with the character of Van Scott and wasn’t sure if I could handle him. I didn’t want him to be laid back or cool or lame. I wanted him to be mysterious, action packed, and filled with emotion. I wanted him to be able to pour his heart out one second and fight the next. When I started writing the fighting scenes I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I really enjoyed it.

8. What authors or friends influenced you in helping you become a writer?

Well, everyone knows that my BFF is Betty Midnight. She actually pushed me into this big time. I had told her about my idea a while back and she urged me to do it. I refused over and over until finally she wore me down and we ended up writing a book together (His Best Friend’s Bed) and ever started a four book series (Hadyn Heat). Once we got done with the first book of Hadyn Heat I realized that I could handle this on my own… and from there I started work right away on HIS BODY, HIS BLOOD.

9. What does your family think about your career as a published author?

Lucky for me, everyone is supportive. I don’t have much family but my friends are really great. They’re the ones who read the books first before it goes to the editor.

10. Besides writing, what other interests do you have?

Sadly, I’m really boring. I love to read… like a lot. And I’ll read anything. Any genre. Nonfiction. Anything. I love television and as much as I hate to admit it, I have NOT seen ANY vampire shows. I don’t care for them… I like my vampires.

11. Can you tell us about what’s coming up next for you writing wise?

Right now, the second book of HIS BODY, HIS BLOOD is being sent through the final edits. I ended up writing both books one and two together to prove I could do it.
Betty and I have been working on Hadyn Heat book two which should see life by May.
Other than that, I’m enjoying this process and writing short stories.

12. How can readers connect with you online?

Wow, I’m TERRIBLE at the online stuff. I have a site http://www.avamichaels.blogspot.com/  but it’s a dead zone. I’m with Betty on a site called The Sex Clique (http://www.thesexclique.blogspot.com/ ) which is a group of erotica writers who share books and posts. I swear though that I plan on getting more active on my own site… but honestly, I’d rather be at the keyboard bringing more of Van Scott’s story to life!

Blurb for HIS BODY, HIS BLOOD:

Van Scott’s job is to kill vampires.

The organization he works for is a secret, and when they ask him to protect a sexy man named Daniel Winters, the secrets only seem to pile up.

Van’s lust for men has burned inside him for years, and even cost him his relationship with his parents. He has always been able to control himself and his secrets, but with Daniel Winters, he feels as though he cannot control himself.

There’s only one rule Van must follow when protecting Daniel: do not fall in love.

After a vicious attack by a nest of vampires, both Van and Daniel are left vulnerable and soon secrets are exposed and rules are broken… but it is Daniel Winters who holds the biggest secret of all.

Guest Blogger: Why I Prefer My Romances Hot

By Deborah Court, Author of "Bound to the Prince"

Since human beings tend to like very different things, readers' tastes naturally vary. Nowadays, there are so many romance sub-genres that you can choose from countless story types including Contemporary, Historical or Paranormal Romance - which has gained immense interest since the rise of Harry Potter and Twilight. But when it comes to erotic content, there are also different levels of "hotness" available; starting with "sweet" romances, containing only a kiss or two, or maybe just a decent hint that the love couple shared the night. Other readers crave much more passion, along with a love story that's driven by erotic tension. Of course, there is also Erotica especially for women, but this genre doesn't need a love story as much as well-written, hot erotic scenes.

I happen to write Erotic Romances. The reason is that I'm the kind of reader who wants to know what's happening behind closed doors! I'd love to see what occurs after the mind-blowing, life-changing first kiss, when the hero and heroine have finally declared their love for each other. This is something I always wondered about after finishing one of the classic romances. Didn't you ever want to read something about Mr Darcy's and Elizabeth's first night, or (even better) find out how the dark, brooding Mr Rochester showed his love to Jane Eyre when she finally returned to him? I think that "carnal pleasures" belong to life and love, and I like to explore them in my own stories.

But this doesn't necessarily mean that every book needs erotic scenes. Jane Austen, for instance, managed to write powerful love stories without even including a proper kiss. She managed so well that she still fuels readers' fantasies (and they aren't always chaste!) to the present day. Women don't love to see Colin Firth in a wet shirt without a reason. There's no doubt that we wonder what kind of lover Mr Darcy will be after the wedding. We just know that he'll be a passionate one, that a beast is sleeping behind that cool demeanor, only to be awakened by the right woman.

However, this doesn't need to be a bad thing. I enjoy reading "sweet" or "steamy" romances equally the same, depending on my mood. Both genres succeed in what they are supposed to accomplish - opening a door for the readers' imaginations and allowing them to escape into another world that does or doesn't contain erotic relationships. To me, the most important fact is that nowadays, we have the freedom to choose.

House of Pleasure, Deborah Court's new Erotic Romance, is out now - you can get it here! Her Paranormal Romance, Bound To The Prince, is also available at Amazon.com. It's the first book in her Elven Warrior Trilogy. Connect with Deborah online on Twitter, Facebook and Goodreads, or visit her website.

When Jane Eden inherits an old Victorian mansion on the outskirts of Boston, she has no idea what secrets it harbors. She soon discovers that it's a magic house, fulfilling all the sexual fantasies of its female residents. Losing herself in sensual dreams that take her to exotic places and delightful historical eras, she never considers what will happen if she ever loses her heart.

Luke Thomas is Hollywood's most celebrated action-hero, used to swooning fans falling all over him. One day he meets a beautiful woman in a park who doesn't seem to be interested in him at all. It's a challenge he just can't resist. His desire to see her again transports him to Jane's house, and he gets lost in the arms of a lover who drives him into a frenzy of boundless pleasure. But will he gain her love when the prize is higher than she's willing to pay?

Excerpt:

Night fell quickly in the Sultan's realm. One minute the sunlight had warmed the room, bathing it in a golden glow, the next it seemed to grow darker rapidly while the muezzin sang the evening prayer, his beautiful voice creating a magical atmosphere. When he finished, the city seemed to fall into a deep slumber, all the noise and shouting from the streets and the bazaar gone. Only the night birds sang their sweet, seductive songs from a branch near the open windows.

Jane followed Aamir the chief eunuch to the huge bathing pool on the other side of the chamber, secretly admiring his broad back and sculptured muscles while he lit the candles. He had discarded his turban and revealed long, dark hair that reached over his shoulders; she had the inexplicable wish to entwine her fingers in the glossy waves. Jane couldn't believe that he was not a real man anymore. But had he told her the truth?

His deep voice and the unveiled desire in his eyes clearly spoke against it, although this only occurred when he thought she was not looking at him. The slave led her to the marble steps leading into the water and told her to undress. Jane looked around, but there was nothing with which to shield her body from Aamir's eyes. She shrugged, quickly removed her clothing and stood naked before him. Her body was fully exposed to his sight and although he stood behind her, she felt his eyes examining her body, doubtless deciding if she was beautiful enough to please the Sultan.

"I will bathe you now," she heard his deep voice before he took her hand and led her deeper into the warm water. The flowers on its surface made her dizzy with their exotic perfume. Then, his large hands were all over her body, washing her with a soap that was scented like orchids and something earthy, ambra perhaps. It made her skin tingle and left it soft like velvet. He washed her hair, neck and back, moving his hands in circles until he reached her breasts. Jane gasped, but he continued mercilessly, gently kneading her and rubbing her with his warm palms. Aamir laughed, a pleased look on his proud, handsome face. It was the face of a noble prince, not a slave, she thought.

"Oh yes, you will be well-prepared for the Sultan once I am finished with you," he said. "The Sultan likes his concubines ready and willing once he visits them in the harem. He is not a very patient man. When he joins your bed and takes you, he'll expect you to be aroused. So relax, My Lady. I know that although I'm not a whole man, women usually like my touch for I'm not unpleasant to their eyes - at least this is what I have been told. If you let me do my work it will be better for both of us, I promise. Just let it happen."

Jane still thought about a possible answer but cried out with surprise when he sat her down on a low marble column that rose slightly out of the water, then parted her quivering thighs with his strong hands …

TO KISS A KING – Maureen Child
A Perfect 10
Kings of California , Book 11
Harlequin Desire #2137
ISBN: 978-0-373-73150-3
February 2012
Series Romance

Laguna Beach, California – Present Day

An outing to Disneyland with his cousin Jackson's family is the last place Garrett King wants to be until he runs into a beautiful woman who looks as if she could fit in with the magical, make-believe world surrounding them in the Magic Kingdom. While she's mysterious and insistent she can take care of herself, security expert Garrett soon recognizes her as Princess Alexis of Cadria. What the heck is one of the most sought after royal celebs doing out on her own without security? Garrett decides to attach himself to Alexis's side discreetly, and, as they get to know each other, he soon discovers he's attracted to her. But he can't let himself get involved with a woman he's protecting.

Princess Alexis Morgan Wells has felt chafed by the confines of being royalty and forced to always have guards around her. By slipping away from her family, she has achieved her dream of visiting California (her mother's birthplace) and especially Disneyland . Unexpectedly meeting Garrett, she's glad to have someone treat her with the respect and attention of that of a beautiful woman—and not because she's royalty. How will Alexis feel when she discovers that Garrett not only knows who she really is, but that he has already been in contact with her father and has agreed to watch her?

Maureen Child references the movie Roman Holiday in her reader letter in front of TO KISS A KING, and I have to say I absolutely love the story idea. A lonely princess wants to experience freedom and spend a few days unfettered by the demands of royal obligations and paparazzi in her face. Alexis grew up hearing about life in Southern California , especially at Disneyland where her commoner mother met Alexis's father, who is now the king of Cadria. Hooking up with Garrett is like a breath of fresh air as Alexis finally meets a man seemingly unimpressed with her wealth and title. He shows her a good time in California , and they grow closer. Soon, Alexis is falling in love.

Garrett has seen women like Alexis before. They need to be protected, and their biggest threat is when they expose themselves to danger. An experience with one of his charges in the past has left Garrett determined to not fall in love, especially with a woman he's protecting. Alexis is clearly falling for him, and Garrett has to make her understand that there can't be any kind of future between them. But this doesn't stop him from making love to her. After all, how can he resist a woman he desires with all of his heart?

The pages flew as I consumed TO KISS A KING in near record time. I adored the characters of Alexis and Garrett. Their chemistry rocks this tale, and the simmering sensuality between them sizzles. There wasn't any question that I'd give this a Perfect 10 because TO KISS A KING is that perfect book that can't be set down. I highly recommend TO KISS A KING as one of the best reads of February. Run to your nearest bookstore and grab your copy to see why.

Spotlight Review:

LUCKY PENNY – Catherine Anderson
Signet
ISBN: 978-0-451-23603-6
February 2012
Western Historical Romance

No Name, Colorado 1891

At age thirty, David Paxton has reason to be satisfied with his life. He has a thriving cattle ranch, most of his family lives nearby, and as town marshal, he has pretty well tamed the town of No Name . But if he's ever going to start his own brood, now is the time. He contemplates proposing to the new schoolteacher. Before he actually does, however, someone from Denver drops a bomb on his desk. The “bomb” is a sack full of letters from a woman claiming to be Mrs. David Paxton begging him to come for her and their daughter. David may have been a bit careless in his younger days, but has no memory of ever marrying…but could he be a father? He should just ignore the whole thing as a mistake by the Denver postmaster. If it weren't for the heartrending letters addressed to Papa from a little girl describing the poverty she and her hardworking mother endure, he would. His conscience sees him off to the little town of Glory Ridge.

Brianna O'Keefe, raised in an orphanage in Boston with her identical twin sister, lives under the invented the name of Mrs. David Paxton after answering an advertisement for a rancher's housekeeper in Colorado . She also pretends her husband is a gold miner near Denver . All this is to safeguard herself as she raises her deceased sister's daughter as her own. The ruse doesn't work perfectly, however; she still has to fend off unwanted advances. The letters she wrote were forced on her by her former employer who wanted to get rid of her, yet was uneasy about casting out a mother and child. At the moment, Brianna and six year-old Daphne live in an attic and nearly starve though she works two jobs and does extra tasks in her “spare time.”

David just wants to satisfy himself that the whole thing is a mistake, but one look at the little girl has him reeling. She looks just as his mother would have looked at that age. The coloring, the shape of the face, the dimple, and even the birthmark on the side of her neck! Though he has no memory whatsoever of the little girl's mother, the girl must be a Paxton!

Brianna denies that David is Daphne's father. She sticks to the story of a gold miner husband, but David had thoroughly investigated that; no such man exists in or around Denver . Though Brianna tries to live as her gentle sister, she has a hot, Irish temperament that is equal to David's own hard-headedness. They wind up taking their case to “court” before a judge and marshal, neither of whom is entirely sober. The judge hears their arguments and summarily pronounces them man and wife—even makes out papers to that effect. Brianna is stuck; David now has the power to take Daphne from her. She must go with him. He says he's taking them home to his family in No Name where he is a respectable citizen. Brianna's fears are founded on her own experiences and on the penny dreadful novels she has read. She's afraid Paxton is taking Daphne to sell below the border and plans to escape at first chance. She who has never ridden a horse in her life.

What follows is a journey that is filled with suspicion on both parts, for David is convinced Brianna is a liar. All the while, David is enchanted by Daphne and the idea of being a father. The two quickly establish a loving relationship that is, oh, so charming. Is Daphne a Paxton? Does it really matter?

Chalk up LUCKY PENNY as another magical tale from the marvelous Catherine Anderson. No one can fail to be moved by her lively and lifelike characters who overcome difficult obstacles while maintaining their honor and humanity. Brianna and David still have a long way to go to reach their happy ending, but I guarantee readers will be swept along with them. They will be helped by David's close family, some of whom starred in their own books. Many of Ms. Anderson's novels, contemporary and historicals, are connected, though all of them stand alone. Those that revolve around a Paxton began with KEEGAN'S LADY. Ace Keegan is David's older half brother who brought up the Paxtons after their father died. Next is Joseph Paxton in SUMMER BREEZE and sister Eden Paxton in EARLY DAWN (also connected to the Coulter family series). After LUCKY PENNY, we can look forward to brother Esa's tale yet to come.

For a heartwarming, entertaining, and spellbinding read, I highly recommend LUCKY PENNY.

Guest Blogger: Sara Ramsey

What’s the most awkward question a writer can get? When my debut novel, Heiress Without A Cause, came out two weeks ago, I expected strange glances from former coworkers and knowing leers from my friends. After all, it is a Regency romance with several very sexy scenes – not exactly standard dinner conversation.

But questions about the sex scenes almost never come up. Instead, I’ve discovered the question that makes me far more uncomfortable.

Is such-and-such character supposed to be you?

Some people suspect that my current heroine, Madeleine, is based on me because she has brown hair and green eyes. Yes, I also have brown hair and green eyes, but I look nothing like her (or any romance heroine – at 5’0”, I’m statuesque the way that lawn gnomes are statuesque).

Others suspect that Madeleine’s friend Amelia, who stars in my next book, must be me because she’s a writer. That’s like saying I must be Ernest Hemingway’s twin because we’ve both written novels. I’ll admit a secret weakness for daiquiris, but that’s where the similarities between Mr. Hemingway and I end.

So, no, I’m not a ringer for any of my characters. But I do have something in common with all my heroines – the unwavering belief that women can and should pursue their passions. The journey my characters face is one we all go through – learning how to be ourselves without sacrificing all the relationships (love, sex, friendship, family) that make life so wonderful.

Heiress Without A Cause is the first book in my Muses of Mayfair series, featuring four women who are each pursuing a different artistic passion. They must keep their identities secret from the ton, but they support each other through all their endeavors – including all the twists and turns that lead to them meeting their perfect (for them, at least :) ) mates.

So if I do have anything in common with my heroines, aside from hair color and humor, it’s definitely a belief that pursuing your dreams isn’t just possible, but necessary – and having great friends and family makes it even better. Holding my debut novel in my hands has only reinforced that belief.

I would love to hear from you – what passion do you want to pursue? Or are you still figuring it out? One commenter will win an ebook of Heiress Without A Cause, which is out now as a Nook First exclusive and will be available on Kindle and other ebook retailers on February 24th.

Thanks for letting me visit!

The prequel, Heiress Without A Cause (formerly titled One Night to Scandal), was a 2011 Golden Heart finalist.

Sara grew up in a small town in Iowa, and her obsession with fashion, shoes, and all things British is clearly a rebellion against her hopelessly uncool youth. FIRELIGHT - Kristen Callihan
Darkest London Series
A Perfect 10
Grand Central's Forever

February 2012
Paranormal Historical Romance

England - 1881

Since childhood, Miranda Ellis has tried to hide a terrifying and powerful gift that she possesses within herself. Because this power caused untold hardship for her family, she has a less than loving relationship with her father. So she is not surprised when she returns home one day to discover that she has been promised in marriage to the darkly mysterious nobleman, Lord Benjamin Archer. There is little she can do, and within days she is the new Lady Archer, wed to a man who hides his face behind a mask.

Archer has been entranced by the lovely Miranda since a chance encounter with her three years before. He knows it is not right that he subject her to a life with him, a life that is far from normal. For Archer hides a shocking secret that he is determined never to share with Miranda, even though she seems resolute in discovering what he is hiding. When brutal murders begin to occur, killings linked to Archer, his young wife becomes obsessed with proving his innocence. As much as Archer tries to distance himself from Miranda, she is equally tenacious in her intent to get closer to her husband.

The dark, dangerous road Archer has taken absorbs him, but he slowly is beginning to realize that it is possible for someone to love him. He just can't let Miranda know how much he cares for her; it isn't healthy for her. The horrible secrets he hides are stripping him of his soul, and he won't drag his beloved wife down with him. But is there a way to stop her from trying to save him?

Wow! FIRELIGHT is a debut novel that will knock your socks off. Readers are not going to be able to casually read this novel. It's a page turner because everyone will want to know what is going on with Archer, who is the gruesome murderer, and can it be Archer? Of course, wanting to know how or if Miranda will use her power hovers in the background, too. The growing passion between Archer and Miranda steams up the pages, and just wondering if this story can have a happy ending will keep readers up at night. I know it did me!

Excellent secondary characters and an amazing premise make FIRELIGHT a rare Perfect 10 for a debut novel. I can't wait for the next book.

Guest Blogger: OTHER LIVES by Deirdre Martin

Writing is hard work for me. Really, really hard work, since I can be somewhat insecure. What if I think the hero and heroine have chemistry, but they don’t? What if the sex scene I’m working on is about as steamy as a boiling pot of spaghetti?

On days when Madam Muse refuses to appear, or when I feel that writing is the equivalent of working on a chain gang, I daydream about doing something else for a living. My top escape fantasies are:

  •  Become a mailman. Woman. Person. Whatever the politically correct term is. The big attraction to this job is that I’d get to walk around all day, so I’d get really thin. Plus, I’d get to wear a uniform, so I wouldn’t have to worry about what to wear. This is of crucial importance to someone who once opened her front door wearing lemon colored harem pants and a Ringo Rocks! t shirt from 1975. On the negative side, I haven’t figured out yet how to handle the heat of summer, and the US Postal System is on the rocks. Note to self: see if mail people can do their job in the nude, as long as their mail satchels are strategically placed.

  • Join the Merchant Marines. There’s no age limit to this profession, as long as you pass the physical. How hard could it be? I’m sure all you have to do is be able to climb a mast and properly wield a telescope. Plus I love to travel, I love the ocean, and sleeping in a mesh hammock is Number Four on my Bucket List.

  • Work on a cruise ship. I’d be a really good entertainer: I can juggle, and I can also sing Bonnie Taylor’s “Total Eclipse of the Heart” perfectly. I could easily brush up on my kazoo skills as well. Seriously: who doesn’t love kazoo music? Have you ever heard “Memory” from the Cats done on a kazoo? Haunting. I’m not kidding.

  • Visit elementary schools as a Mary Todd Lincoln impersonator. This one is actually the most viable: I’m plump, I’m moody, and I have a very tall husband with a beard who puts up with me. I’ve been trying to talk him into playing Abe to my Mary, but so far it’s a no go.
Alternate: visit nursery schools as Dora the Explorer. She’s little, plus we have the same haircut right now.

  • Get a job as Bono’s personal secretary. I know, I know, I know: he’s the size of Rumpelstilskin and he never shuts up about aid to Africa. But I’ve had a mad crush on the man since 1981, when U2 released their first CD, Boy. Think about what a cool job it would be to be his PA: “Could you please call Edge and ask if he got his check for three hundred million dollars from the last tour? Because I haven’t gotten mine yet. Also, you know that luncheon I’m holding tomorrow at the Plaza to raise money for impoverished romance writers? Find out if Obama has any food allergies. I’m sure I can talk him into making a huge donation for these poor, struggling souls.”

Of course, if I ditched my profession, I wouldn’t have been able to write books like BREAKAWAY, the latest in my New York Blades series. It combined two of my favorite subjects: hockey and Ireland. Here’s the back cover blurb:

They had it all planned out: college, marriage, happily ever after.

But it didn’t quite work out that way…

Erin O’Brien was everyone’s favorite in Ballycraig, while Rory Brady was the town’s golden boy: the local lad who moved to America and became a professional hockey player. Rory promised to return to sweep Erin away to the life of her dreams in New York. But the bright lights and late nights turned his head and he never came back.

Two years later, Rory realizes he’s made the worst mistake of his life. Heading back to Ballycraig, he’s confident that all he needs to do is flash his winning smile and Erin will fall back into his arms. But Erin’s moved on.

Racing the clock, Rory needs to prove to her that the man she fell in love with is still there. But can happy-go-lucky Erin risk it all and give another chance to the man who broke her heart?

Intrigued? BREAKAWAY hits the shelves on February 7th. I’m also working on the next book in the Blades series. The writing seems to be going pretty well right now, but that’s all I’ll say. I don’t want to jinx things…

A Perfect 10:

WHAT HAPPENED TO HANNAH - Mary Kay McComas
A Perfect 10
William Morrow
ISBN: 978-0-06-208478-1
February 2012
Contemporary Romance

Clearfield, Virginia - The Present

Her high school boy friend, Grady Steadman, calls Hannah Benson to tell her that her mother has died. Hanna hasn't communicated with anyone in her home since she ran away twenty years ago. She thought no one knew her whereabouts, but she definitely doesn't want to go home. However, Grady tells her that Ruby, her sister, also passed away five years ago leaving Hannah's fifteen-year-old niece Anna in need of a home.

A successful insurance agent owning her own agency, Hannah escaped family abuse and homelessness. Before she left, most of her classmates made fun of her but knew not to anger Hannah. She protected herself and Ruby, earning a reputation for her quick temper and ability to win fights. The night before her mother murdered him, her father beat Hannah after learning she had kissed Grady. Hannah went missing, and most residents in Clearfield believed her dead. After Grady's call, she reluctantly returns home to meet her niece. Anna turns out to be a beautiful, well-mannered, smart, and thoughtful girl who is also a star member of the track team. Hannah can't believe her mother raised Anna. How could she show such love to Anna, but not to her own daughter? In spite of this, the last two family members bond with one another.

Grady discovered Hannah's location three years previously, but had never had the nerve to contact her. He is the sheriff of Clearwater , a divorced man with two teenage children. His daughter is Anna's best friend, and his son is interested in dating Anna. He still loves Hannah, but he knows from experience she is hiding a deep, dark secret. He won't let her take her niece back to Baltimore until he knows that secret is no threat to Anna.

This story kept me reading all night. Grady and Hannah, Anna, and Grady's mom and children are wonderful characters full of goodness and conflict. The details in WHAT HAPPENED TO HANNAH are horrific, as all child abuse is, but compelling reading. Their childhood destroyed her sister, and nearly destroyed Hannah. Her escape and fortitude speak to her moral fiber. Clearfield perfectly represents all of our communities where such things still happen. Author Mary Kay McComas writes a poignant story about Hannah's escape with rich characterizations, a recognizable setting, teasing dialogue that lightens the mood, and both shocking and touching action, earning WHAT HAPPENED TO HANNAH a Perfect 10.

Q&A with Anna Randol!

1. Tell us about your newest release.

A SECRET IN HER KISS is set in Constantinople in 1815. Here’s the blurb: A rare beauty, raised in the exotic heart of the mysterious East, Mari Sinclair knows it's time to end her career as a British spy when she narrowly avoids a brush with death. Unfortunately, there are those who think otherwise--and they are not above using blackmail to keep Mari in the game.

Saddled with a handsome, duty-obsessed "minder" to ensure that she completes--and survives--one last mission, Mari is incensed . . . for her guardian, Major Bennett Prestwood, is simply "too" dedicated, "too" unbending, and "too" disarmingly attractive. But in the face of dark secrets and deadly treacheries, as the true peril to Mari is slowly revealed, loyal soldier Bennett realizes that to save and win this extraordinary woman, he will have to do the unthinkable and break the rules--rules that passion and desire have suddenly, irrevocably changed.

2. Can you tell us a little about your favorite scene in the story?

Fairly late on in the story, as Mari and Bennett are on their final mission, Bennett finds out that Mari found his book of poetry and read it. Having been mocked for his writing he is embarrassed and angry. Yet at the same time he can’t quite stop himself from finding out her opinion! It is a fun glimpse into tough-guy-Bennett’s softer more vulnerable side.

3. When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

When I was eight, I decided my real life was too dull, so I started writing my journal as if I was on a raft on the Amazon River with my dog Cream Puff (A Pomeranian. Poor thing. I’m not sure how I expected it to survive in the heat.). I may not have decided I wanted to be writer as a profession then, but my love of a good fantasy was born.

4. Tell us a little about your daily writing routine. Are you a plotter or pantser?

I have kids so my writing is mainly confined to naptime and after bedtime. It makes for a lot of late nights, but I love it too much to give it up.

As far as plotting and pantsing—a little of both, but mostly a pantser. I have several key scenes I know I am going to include. I just never quite know how I am going to get there.

5. What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?

If I’m writing and I decide to cut a scene, I don’t delete it entirely. I tack it on to the end of the document until I am completely done with the book. I think I find it too disheartening to lose my hard-earned word count. And I’m always terrified I’ll need it later! On the plus side, it makes it easier to cut things that need to go because I can always change my mind.

6. What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your books?

It amazes me how much my subconscious plays a part in my story. For example, when I get to the end of the story and realize small clues I didn’t realize I was leaving earlier flow perfectly into the ending I want.

7. What authors or friends influenced you in helping you become a writer?

My critique partner Elise Rome and I were lucky enough to meet fairly early in our writing careers. She’s strong in areas I’m weak in and vice versa. I also have a fabulous core group of local writer friends. We beta read for each other occasionally, but it is really about supporting each other in the strange career that is writing.

8. What does your family think about your career as a published author?

They are incredibly supportive. My mom edits my books and my husband brags about my writing at work. His co-workers have copies of my cover on their desks. We’ll see if that changes once they actually read it…

9. Besides writing, what other interests do you have?

I have two small children so I spend a lot of time with them. I’m pretty awesome at hide-and-go-seek if I do say so myself. I love to read everything I can get my hands on. I also love chocolate in all forms.

10. Can you tell us about what’s coming up next for you writing wise?

In early Summer of 2012, readers will be able to discover happens to the little sister Bennett is worried about in A SECRET IN HER KISS. Sophia is just rediscovering her own strength after an abusive relationship, but it’s a knowledge she must claim quickly as she faces off with a maddeningly handsome magistrate who thinks she might be guilty of murder. It’s an e-novella and should be a fast, sexy read!

Then in late summer 2012, my next novel SINS OF A VIRGIN, will be released. To secure her future, former spy Madeline Valdan announces the auction of the one thing no one suspects she still possesses—her virginity. But Madeline’s no fool. She won’t entrust her precious commodity to just anyone. She hires Gabriel Huntford, a Bow Street Runner, to protect her virginity until it’s properly paid for. Although the passion Huntford inspires is unlike anything she’s ever known, Madeline knows better than to give herself away for free. She also knows the man she hired is hiding an agenda of his own.

11. How can readers connect with you online?

They can email me through my website at http://www.annarandol.com/ Or I am active on twitter at @AnnaRandol
