California - Present Day

Radiologist Dr. Alyssa Foster is on her twelfth consecutive day of twenty-four hour shifts and is looking forward to the end of her fellowship as she heads to the worst part of her job; dealing with prisoners. Her current patient ‘s size as well as the fact that he's serving a life sentence makes her nervous, but a part of her can't help but admire his build. Alyssa's worry over his unexplained high body temperature and his soft-spoken responses to her questions lull her just enough that the prisoner is able to take her captive before she can even blink. Alyssa sees her chances for help or escape dwindling as first the guards give over without a fuss, and then another prisoner joins them. With nothing to obstruct their escape, Alyssa quickly finds herself handcuffed in a car with two escaped convicts.

Teague Creek ahs reached the end of his rope. After three years in prison, his last appeal has been rejected, but he has no intention of serving out the rest of his life sentence. A paramedic and firefighter in his former life, things changed for Teague drastically after a warehouse fire that killed some of his fellow firefighters. He's not sure how it happened, but since that fire his body temperature has been elevated, and he can heal wounds with his bare hands. That same fire also started the out-of-control downward spiral that sent Teague to prison, but now he intends to take back his life. Capturing Hannah, the girlfriend of his former friend and brother-in-law, at the hospital is integral to his plans, and Teague figures that as long as he has Hannah for leverage, everything will work out in the end. But how will things work out when he realizes that the doctor he kidnapped isn't Hannah?

A thrill ride from beginning to end, FEVER will keep you on the edge of your seat. Teague has pretty much given up on proving his innocence; he just wants to get back the most important pieces of his former life and move on – far from the reach of those responsible for his current nightmare. Alyssa has worked hard to get where she is, and being held as a hostage will certainly mess up her career plans. When she realizes that Teague meant to kidnap the attending physician that Alyssa was covering for, she decides to keep her mouth shut – as long as she's of use to him, he won't kill her. But as her night goes from bad to worse, Alyssa begins to see sides of Teague she hadn't expected, and begins to wonder just who the man truly is: convicted killer or protective healer.

With plenty of twists and turns to keep readers guessing, and a captivating if unique romance, Joan Swan's debut book FEVER, is a must read.
