Q&A with Amanda Bretz!

1. Tell us about your newest release.

Finding Justus is about Justus, a woman who found her fiance cheating on her a month before her wedding. She calls off her marriage, but decides to go on her honeymoon and takes her best friend with her. It's on her honeymoon cruise that Justus meets a handsome Latin dance instructor, Miguel, and the two quickly realize they have great chemistry on the dance floor, and off of it.

2. Can you tell us a little about your favorite scene in the story?

A lot of the story revolves around dancing, but I feel the climax of the book is when Justus and Miguel dance together on the last night of the cruise. It's bittersweet because Justus realizes it's the last time she'll dance with Miguel, so she pours her heart and soul into the dance. I've always felt the scene has a rhythm and beat all its own. The dance is loaded with showmanship, passion and energy that comes across to the reader. When I was writing it, I could hear the music and feel each step that Miguel and Justus took. I could see the hem of her red dress flutter in the air with each of her steps and every one of Miguel's proud movements and hand gestures as he led her in their sensuous dance.

3. When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

I realized it way back when I was 10 years old. I was looking through the Sears Christmas Catalog and I remember seeing the typewriters and immediately falling in love with them. I carried the catalog around for weeks, and the pages that had the typewriters on it were eventually dog-eared. I remember thinking they were the coolest things ever and drooled over cutting-edge features like auto-erase. I begged my parents for a typewriter for Christmas, and told them I was going to use it to write a book. I really didn't start getting serious about writing stories until I was in college. I took a creative writing class that I loved and that's also when I started working on my first book, Finding Justus.

4. Where do you get your information or ideas for your stories?

For me, inspiration for a story can strike at seemingly random moments and times. While people watching at the mall, as I'm drifting off to sleep, when I'm taking a walk outside.

When I need information for stories, I usually go to the Web to find what I’m looking for. Sites like Wikipedia are great if I need to verify facts or historical information.

5. What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?

I used to be a journalist and I got used to writing in a noisy newsroom. A quiet room is too distracting. When I write, I like to listen to music or sit in a crowded, noisy space, like Barnes and Noble, Panera Bread or Starbucks.

6. What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your books?

That you can never edit enough. If there is one piece of advice I could pass to other writers, especially those who are going the self-publishing route, it would be edit, edit, edit and edit some more. Then have trusted friends or family read your manuscript. You can never have too many sets of eyes on your book.

7. What authors or friends influenced you in helping you become a writer?

As far as authors go, I am a big fan of Sandra Brown's older romance novels. She influenced me as a writer and her success is both enviable and awe-inspiring.

8. What does your family think about your career as a published author?

My family members have encouraged me to be a writer for as long as I can remember. Other than my husband, my sister Tawnya and cousin Jeremy have been my biggest supporters. The three of them read the first rough drafts of Finding Justus and offered invaluable feedback, suggestions and words of encouragement. I'm very blessed to have such a supportive family.

9. Besides writing, what other interests do you have?

I love cooking. It can be a creative art form and for me, a way to relax after a long day. I like to prepare big meals for friends and family.

I also am a bit of a movie buff. I'm the type of person that will pepper my everyday conversation with family and friends with lines from my favorite movies.

10. Can you tell us about what’s coming up next for you writing wise?

I'm working on my second book, a romance with the working title of Love in Greener Pastures.

It's set in a small rural town in Illinois . It's got a completely different feel from Finding Justus, but the story still centers around two people meeting and falling in love.

I'm hoping to have it completed and for sale on my website and in the Kindle store by late spring or early summer.

11. How can readers connect with you online?

My website is http://www.amandabretz.com/ . I also write a personal blog at http://vidadeverde.blogspot.com/ . Readers can also like me on Facebook or follow me on Twitter http://twitter.com/#!/vidadeverde .

Spotlight Review:

A LIGHT AT WINTER’S END – Julia London
Pocket Books
ISBN: 978-1-439-17649-8
March 2011
Contemporary Romance

Cedar Springs and Austin, Texas – Present Day

Holly Fisher almost has it all. She just signed a contract with Quincy Crowe, an aspiring singer whose next three songs, her songs, just might go straight to the top! So, when her sister Hannah abandons her infant son, Holly is angry. How dare she? Today is the most important meeting of Holly’s life, but now she’s literally left holding the baby, without a clue what to do with him!

Holly tries everything to find Hannah. She calls Hannah’s husband Loren, but all he does is give her grief. Finally, days later, in desperation, she locks up her loft apartment in Austin and heads home to Cedar Springs and the house her mother left her. Now, she’s stuck with baby Mason, her sister is nowhere to be found, and the cowboy living next door has decided he wants to be friends. Can her life get any more complicated?

Millionaire Wyatt Clark is intrigued with Holly Fisher. The old ranch house has been deserted since Peggy Fisher died, but now her youngest daughter has come home, and with a baby in tow. Wyatt pretty much stays to himself ever since his wife left him, but he still sees his daughter Grace as much as he can. Holly Fisher is a new diversion. Lately, the most exciting thing in Wyatt’s life has been the newest “Word of the Day” on his computer. Holly sure is pretty, and she thinks he’s just a poor old cowboy. Life in the next few months might get interesting indeed.

There is A LIGHT AT WINTER’S END for both Holly and Wyatt as they get to know and depend on each other. Holly struggles with her career and the sudden acquisition of her nephew, taking her from single girl to mother in the blink of an eye. Wyatt’s pride still stings since his wife left him for her first husband, who came back from the dead and the war. Wyatt’s used to being alone. He hides out on his ranch, mending fences and just getting through each day before another one dawns. Having Holly to talk to is making him feel alive again. Until Holly’s world is shattered with the news that Hannah is in rehab. Now Holly must decide whether or not to fight Hannah for custody of Mason, leaving her to struggle with the rights and wrongs of her situation.

The characters in A LIGHT AT WINTER’S END are lively, and the story is strong, dealing with many emotional issues. Both Wyatt and Holly have a long road ahead of them before they can find happiness, but little by little, things have a way of working themselves out.

A LIGHT AT WINTER’S END is a winner!

A Perfect 10:

TO DEFY A KING - Elizabeth Chadwick
A Perfect 10
Sourcebooks
ISBN: 978-1402-25089-7
March 2011
Historical Fiction

England during the reign of King John

Mahelt Marshal was the daughter of one of the greatest men in English history, William Marshal. As the offspring of such a powerful man, she was well educated and brought up to head her own household. Mahelt grew up as the eldest daughter, always knowing that someday her marriage would be one that would tie her family to another one of equal prestige. So it came about that at a tender age, she became the wife of Hugh Bigod, son of the wealthy and influential Earl of Norfolk. Although Hugh was ten years her senior, they grew to love each other, but Mahelt’s transition into the Bigod household wasn’t easy.

Outspoken Mahelt clashes with her stubborn father-in-law who expects women to stay in their place. He orders his son to keep a tight rein on her, but Mahelt is not her father’s daughter for nothing. She is taken under the wing of Hugh’s mother, the gentle Ida, but Mahelt chafes at the restrictions placed on her, especially when her brothers are taken hostage by King John, and she sets out to help them. The king is suspicious about William Marshal’s behavior and decides to hold his sons until Marshal shows that he is still loyal to John. To Mahelt, the king’s behavior just cements her hatred of him, but now that she is also a Bigod, she must temper her actions. It isn’t easy for Mahelt to control herself, though, when John makes overtures to her. The love between Mahelt and Hugh is tested by both her responses to the king and Hugh’s loyalty to his family.

Elizabeth Chadwick has hit a home run again. TO DEFY A KING is beautifully written, impeccably researched, and undeniably enjoyable. The day to day life of a medieval wife is brought to life as Mahelt soon becomes a force to be reckoned with in the Bigod household. While she slowly learns to control her emotions, she isn’t afraid to speak up when she disagrees with her husband or father-in-law, although the earl is anything but enamored of that behavior! The unstable King John makes both the Marshal and Bigod families test their honor to uphold his kingdom, and puts Hugh and Mahelt at odds.

Ms. Chadwick is one of the finest authors of historical fiction today, and I have never been disappointed when I open one of her novels. TO DEFY A KING is no exception and is a Perfect 10 because of that.

Spotlight Review:

AGAINST THE LAW – Kat Martin
The Raines of Wind Canyon, Book 3
Mira Books
ISBN: 978-0-7783-2940-4
March 2011
Contemporary Romance

Arizona, California, and Mexico – Present Day

Devlin Raines is the tough, no nonsense owner of a private investigations agency, though he considers himself retired. When Lark Delaney approaches him about looking for the child her late sister gave up for adoption, Dev decides to take on the case himself. Of course, part of it could be that his libido has kicked into high gear at the first sight of the sexy, attractive Lark. But Dev is an honorable man and won’t have an affair with a client. Right from the start, the search has enough twists and turns to dissuade most anyone, but Lark and Dev are determined to find the little girl. Finally, when she’s located, it hurls Dev and Lark right into another, more dangerous situation.

Lark lost her only sister, Heather, to cancer, and on her sister’s deathbed she promised she’d look for the child just to make sure she’s in a loving home. Lark made a fortune designing purses and as such, she can hire the best—who just so happens to be Dev. The chemistry between them smolders, but like Dev, Lark knows they need to keep their relationship on a business only basis. While Dev prefers to do the search without Lark tagging along, she has other ideas. This closeness only adds to the ever growing sexual attraction between them. Will Lark and Dev finally give in to their lust for each other? What happens after the child is found?

Having read the two prior books in Kat Martin’s The Raines of Wind Canyon series, AGAINST THE WIND and AGAINST THE FIRE, I’ll have to say that AGAINST THE LAW is the most intensely suspenseful of the three. This book was also like two stories in one. The first part deals with the search for the little girl, while the second part is what happens afterwards. To give away too much would be providing spoilers….

Dev was hurt in the past by a woman he thought he loved. Because of this, he’s decided to never marry or give his heart to a woman. He’s into one night stands and no female attachments. Even as he burns with lust and desire for Lark, he’s determined to convince himself it can’t be love. As the danger intensifies for him and Lark, his assignment becomes almost personal. He’ll do anything for Lark and the little girl. He’s a strong, dedicated hero that will make the female readers swoon.

Lark is successful and independent, which has proven an asset in building her company, but that same independence has Dev grinding his teeth at her doggedness. It doesn’t take long before he’s butting heads with the smart, sassy, and headstrong Lark. She doesn’t know the meaning of letting a man handle the job. She’s a capable ally for Dev, not afraid to do whatever it takes to protect those she loves. Her attraction for Dev has her in knots. She knows he’s right that they shouldn’t mix business and pleasure, but her body craves him.

AGAINST THE LAW introduces many new characters as they assist Dev in his battle to beat the bad guys. They all play important parts, and three—Jake Cantrell, Trace Rawlins and Johnnie Riggs—get their own tales in the near future per the information from Kat Martin on her website.

Once you start AGAINST THE LAW, be prepared not to stop until you’ve reached the end. With its nonstop action, nail biting episodes mixed with some sizzling love scenes, this is one I highly recommend.

A Perfect 10:

HALFWAY HEXED - Kimberly Frost
A Southern Witch Novel, Book 3
A Perfect 10
Berkley Trade Paperback
ISBN: 978-0-425-23876-9
February 2011
Paranormal Romance

Duvall, Texas - Present Day

Tammy Jo has had a rough couple of weeks—being near death, some serious bombshells being dropped, and the fact that she's torn between two great guys. And just when she thinks she might be able to relax and take the time to figure everything out, it gets worse. Not only does she get kidnapped twice in one day, but she's being harassed by certain Duvall townspeople, and by The Conclave, the governing body for witches and wizards.

Thank goodness she has Bryn to help her. Together they might just have enough cunning and magic to deal with the Bible-wielding townsfolk, the Conclave members, and maybe have enough time left over to figure out their relationship. If there can even be a relationship, when Tammy Jo still loves her ex-husband, and every family member is dead set against her having anything at all to do with Bryn.

HALFWAY HEXED is the third book in the Southern Witch series, following WOULD BE WITCH (Book 1), and BARELY BEWITCHED (book 2). Filled with excellent characters, enough twists and turns to keep you on the edge of your seat, and plenty of witty moments, fans of paranormal romance and urban fantasy will want to snatch this book up, pronto. Tammy Jo is a truly lovable, determined heroine, and she's willing to do whatever it takes to keep her loved ones and town safe. And Bryn is the romance hero to end all—smooth and unflappable, and willing to do anything for Tammy Jo.

HALFWAY HEXED more than deserves a Perfect 10 rating with its thrill ride of a story and heartwarming romantic moments between Bryn and Tammy Jo. Having not read the previous novels, being able to jump into the third book and love it so much is a true testament to how well Kimberly Frost can construct a story. Unfortunately, there is no news as to whether the series will continue or not, so be sure to check out HALFWAY HEXED and the previous Southern Witch novels!

A Perfect 10:

THE RAVEN QUEEN - Jules Watson
A Perfect 10
Spectra
ISBN: 978-0-553-38465-9
March 2011
Historical Fiction Fantasy

Connacht (Celtic Ireland) during and after the Reign of Eochaid

Maeve of Connacht has returned home, fleeing her husband, King Conor of Ulaid, whom her father made an alliance with in exchange for her hand. Now her father is dying, and Maeve doesn’t want her unstable brother, Innel, to be chosen king. Knowing that making her queen would not sit well, Maeve is determined to find a way to convince her people that she would be their best leader. After being her father’s pawn in several marriages, Maeve does not want another man forcing her to do anything. But how will she convince the warriors of Connacht that she is their logical ruler?

Despite the chances that she will anger the magical sidhe, Maeve steals her father’s sword from his body at an enchanted lakeside. There she meets the blind druid, Ruan, who seems to have a connection to the sidhe. Maeve keeps returning to the lake, drawn to Ruan and his mysterious ways, certain that somehow the sidhe will somehow be able to help her through Ruan. When she returns to Connacht, she challenges her brother to a one-on-one duel, winner take all. But even if she wins, will her people follow her?

THE RAVEN QUEEN is a fascinating story based on the legend of Queen Maeve of Ireland. Gathering other kingdoms, Maeve prepares for war with Conor against Ruan’s pleas for peace. She is driven by her passions and fears, determined to show the men around her that she is equal in her bravery and honor. But always in the background is the woman that Maeve can’t deny. Her fears are based on her treatment as a young girl and as a woman by men who controlled her life. Never again will a man deny her the freedom to choose her own future. Maeve controls her own destiny and must deny herself the love she so craves and needs in order to fulfill her promise to her people.

THE RAVEN QUEEN is a fine, beautifully crafted rendition of a very exciting and magical legend. While based on a Celtic fable, Ms. Watson manages to show Maeve as a marvelous leader who just happens to be a woman. Maeve is strong, brave, and fearless, but doesn’t lose the side of her that makes her all too human, able to love and to make difficult choices that could damage that love. All of the characters are richly presented, the historical research impeccable, and the writing is brilliant. Readers will find themselves totally immersed in the ancient Celtic world and will be cheering for Maeve. THE RAVEN QUEEN is a Perfect 10 all the way.

Spotlight Review:

KEEP A LITTLE SECRET – Dorothy Garlock
Grand Central Publishing
ISBN: 978-0-446-54014-8 (Trade Paperback)
ISBN: 978-0-446-54012-4 (Hardcover)
March 21, 2011
Historical Romance

Sawyer, Oklahoma, 1939

The Wallace twins, Owen and Hannah, grew up never knowing who their father was. Owen, especially, grew angrier and angrier watching his mother work herself to death to keep the little family alive. When her last illness took her and her secret to an early grave, Owen searched her papers to find the identity of the man responsible for her troubles. He found a name and a location, John Grant in Sawyer, Oklahoma. Owen and Hannah left Colorado and are now situated on Grant’s horse ranch where they were given a small cabin. They go under the names Owen and Hannah Williams.

Whether or not Grant fathered the twins, he appears to be a good man. Hannah fits right in with the family and the employees; she works in town for a lawyer and uses her position to search town records for any information about her mother and the local citizens. Owen works on the ranch, but keeps to himself. He’s eager to get revenge, but hopes for solid proof he has the right man before he acts.

Meanwhile, Sawyer has a new schoolteacher. We last met Charlotte Tucker as an eight year-old in Ms. Garlock’s STAY A LITTLE LONGER. She’s worked hard to get an education and is thrilled to be venturing out into the world all on her own. John Grant invites her to live at the Grant ranch, where she gets to know the Williamses. When misfortunes begin to occur at the ranch such as seem to be too coincidental, suspicion tends to rest on Owen as an unfriendly outsider. Charlotte can’t believe he is guilty.

Owen, Hannah, and Charlotte are well developed and easy to identify with. Other characters of note include John Grant, of course; Hale McCoy, a big, outgoing ranch hand who turns shy around Hannah; a misfortunate child and her father; and a villain who hates John Grant.

About equally plot and character driven, KEEP A LITTLE SECRET is an entertaining and absorbing read.

In my mind, Dorothy Garlock owns the early twentieth century. I think you’ll like KEEP A LITTLE SECRET.

As the daughter of a billionaire and the owner of the city’s top wine store, Jordan Rhodes is invited to the most exclusive parties in Chicago. But there’s only one party the FBI wants to crash: the charity fundraiser of a famous restaurateur, who also happens to launder money for the mob. In exchange for her brother’s release from prison, Jordan is going to be there—with a date supplied by the Bureau.

Agent McCall just wants her.

As the top undercover agent in Chicago, Nick McCall has one rule: never get personal. This “date” with Jordan Rhodes is merely an assignment—one they’re both determined to pull off even if they can’t be together for five minutes before the sarcasm and sparks begin to fly. But when Nick’s investigation is compromised, he and Jordan have no choice but to pretend they’re a couple, and what starts out as a simple assignment begins to feel a lot like something more. . .

Spotlight Review:

THE BILLIONAIRE GETS HIS WAY – Elizabeth Bevarly
Silhouette Desire #2065
ISBN: 978-0-373-73078-0
February 2011
Series Romance

Chicago, Illinois – Present Day

Gavin Mason is the typical rich businessman, living life the way he thinks it should be lived: gorgeous penthouse apartment, fancy car, Canali wool and cashmere suits, Santoni loafers, Hermes silk ties, Ferragamo shirts, and underwear specially made in a small shop in France. But when a book written by a high priced call girl describes him perfectly in chapter twenty eight, everyone in town assumes it’s him. Like he needs to pay for sex! But after growing up on the mean streets and clawing his way up the ladder of success, Gavin has a reputation to uphold. He cares a lot what people think of him; his reputation and outward appearance are sacred to him; he needs them to keep his place in this world and all its advantages. How dare someone impugn his character? He will go to the book signing and see what this call girl and the author of High Heels and Champagne and Sex, Oh, My! has to say for herself.

Violet Tandy thought long and hard before she wrote her first book, and decided that writing a book that appears to be a memoir was a very popular trend lately. Surely a story about a high class call girl and her clients would be interesting. Little did she know that everyone assumes SHE is the call girl. SURE, she worked at the Chicago Ambassador Hotel but didn’t spend illicit nights looking at the mural on the ceiling in the Princess Suite. SURE, she was a waitress at Chez Alain and knew how the croquet monsieur with truffle sauce tasted. SURE, she’s never tried those sexual positions and only read about them. At the book signing when a gorgeous man comes up and threatens to sue her because she wrote about him in chapter twenty eight and is ruining his reputation, Violet doesn’t know what to say. Don’t people realize that writers MAKE UP what they write about, or research it, that she is not a call girl? But her dream of a house with a white picket fence in the suburbs may be threatened if she can’t find him and get him to forget about suing her. Maybe if she just explains….

It sounds weird that someone doesn’t know a writer makes up what she writes, but I’m sure many people might actually believe it, especially if a man who matches a client of a call girl is well known around town. Gavin can’t even get a date any more for goodness sakes! Gavin talks to Violet and decides that if he’s seen around town with a good looking woman, namely her, maybe everyone won’t assume the book is true. Will Violet give in to her feelings for a man who cares only for what other society people think of him, and will Gavin learn to appreciate Violet for what she is, not what he can make her into?

Elizabeth Bevarly has written a delicious, cute and funny story that will tickle all of your senses. At times you think Violet is writing this story, and other times she and Gavin talk in their own voices. Emotions, pride and knowing what you want out of life gives the story special interest and we are easily drawn in to Gavin and Violet’s world and what eventually becomes important to each of them.

The only secondary character is Roxanne, the fictional diarist of the book. It’s her hijinks and sexual partners that bring Gavin out to protest his fury with being included in the book, even if his name is given as “Ethan”.

THE BILLIONAIRE GETS HIS WAY is a sure-to-please read when you want a laugh and a story that isn’t like all the rest of the billionaire stories. Here, Gavin must reassess his whole way of life and goals, and Violet must determine if what is inside him is worth her time and love. A delightful novel that will leave you with a smile on your face, THE BILLIONAIRE GETS HIS WAY is well worth your time and money.

A Perfect 10:

ABSOLUTELY, POSITIVELY - Heather Webber
A Lucy Valentine Mystery - Book 3
A Perfect 10
St. Martin's Paperbacks
ISBN: 978-0-312-94615-9
February 2011
Cozy Mystery

Boston - Present Day

Lucy Valentine is doing well with her part of Valentine, Inc., Lost Loves. She is finally putting her psychic gift to good use, helping to unite people who have been separated from their true loves. Partnered with her boyfriend, private investigator Sean Donahue, and constantly shadowed by family friend and reporter Preston Bailey, Lucy begins investigating a new case about two teenaged foster kids, Meaghan Archibald and Tristan Rourke, who lost contact years ago.

But this case turns out to be way more than Lucy bargained for. Tristan Rourke is wanted by the FBI and has a particularly bad habit of breaking into Lucy's car, home, office, where ever he needs to get what he wants. Lucy has also taken on a missing person's case for her grandmother, trying to find her friend Mac Gladstone. Lucy must solve the cases, take care of her menagerie of animals, worry about Sean, and somehow manage to actually sleep now and again.

Another excellent installment of the Lucy Valentine series, ABSOLUTELY, POSITIVELY definitely doesn't disappoint! A perfect mix of mystery with a pinch of paranormal, this heartwarming book offers a little something for everyone. Lucy Valentine is an extremely genuine character, unable to let a case go even when it looks as though she's hit a dead end. Each brilliant character adds a little something extra to the story, and readers will fall in love with the Valentine crew. A truly charming story and exciting mystery, ABSOLUTELY, POSITIVELY more than deserves a Perfect 10 rating.

While ABSOLUTELY, POSITIVELY can stand alone just fine, readers will definitely love catching up on Lucy's case solving skills in the first book, TRULY, MADLY released in February 2010, and DEEPLY, DESPERATELY, released August of 2010.

Q & A with Liz Johnson!!

1. Tell us about your newest release.

Code of Justice is my third book featuring Portland FBI agents and tells the story of agent Heather Sloan, whose sister Kit is killed in a helicopter crash. Kit’s last words leave Heather doubting whether the crash was really an accident, and when someone tries to kill her while she’s still recovering in the hospital, Heather knows she’s in trouble. Enter Sheriff’s Deputy Jeremy Latham, who’s assigned to investigate the crash. As the two work together to find the person responsible, they learn to trust and care for each other. Heather will do anything to find her sister’s killer, but could her code of justice cost her the chance to win Jeremy’s love.

2. Can you tell us a little about your favorite scene in the story?

One of my favorite scenes is the opening one. Heather and Kit begin the story knowing that something is terribly wrong as the sightseeing helicopter they’re in begins to plummet. It stole my breath as I wrote it and even made me cry as Heather is helpless in the face of her sister’s injuries. It gets the story off to an intense start, which is one of my favorite parts about romantic suspense novels.

3. When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

I’ve been writing stories since I was 7, including probably the worst novel known to humankind, which I completed when I was 13 or 14. Writing was always a favorite activity, and I knew that I wanted it to be a big part of my career, which is why I majored in public relations in college. After college, I took the Christian Writers Guild two-year apprentice course. Even after completing that, I viewed publishing as more of a dream and less of a goal. It wasn’t until I was working in the Christian publishing industry that a friend of mine really encouraged me to finish a story that I’d been working on, and after many long months that turned into my first published novel, The Kidnapping of Kenzie Thorn.

4. Where do you get your information or ideas for your stories?

The information for my stories comes from lots of research about the places where my stories take place and the jobs that my characters do. I tend to have three or four websites open at any given time while I’m writing. For this book, I was constantly looking up things about helicopters and small planes. But the ideas … well, I’m not sure where they come from, but there’s a wealth of them. Usually, as I’m brainstorming a book idea, I bounce the basics off of a writing buddy, who usually helps me fill out the story a bit more. And before I know it, I have a full-fledged outline.

5. What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?

I’d have to say that it’s that I go in spurts as to where I write. I’ll go for weeks refusing to write anywhere but at my dining room table. And then one day I’ll decide it’s warmer in my bedroom, so I’ll prop myself against a bunch of pillows and write on my bed and only there for about month. And then I’ll move to my couch or decide that Panera is the only place to get real writing done.

6. What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your books?

I’m perpetually surprised at how difficult it is to write a book. It requires the same amount of discipline every time. It requires getting my seat in a chair and writing. That’s never been easy for me, but discipline is a muscle that I have to keep working and keep growing, practicing over and over again.

7. What authors or friends influenced you in helping you become a writer?

Two names immediately come to mind. Kelly Blewett and Jessica Barnes. Kelly and I worked in publicity together years ago, and she’s the one who helped me set up a calendar for finishing my first book. She became my accountability partner, asking me every day if I’d written the night before. You can’t buy that kind of encouragement. And Jessica became my Monday-night writing buddy when I moved to Colorado Springs. I bounced all sorts of ideas off of her, and she brilliantly helped keep me on track. I doubt I’d be published now without these two dear friends. There are also several families at my home church in Arizona who have been really supportive, reading first manuscripts and throwing me booksignings now that my books have released. Judy Dyson, Ann Autrey, and the Hirte family have all been incredibly supportive.

8. What does your family think about your career as a published author?

When I sold my first book, I called to tell my brother and he asked if that meant I was quitting my job and moving back to Arizona to be near the rest of the family. I laughed and said I was going to have to sell a whole lot more than one book to be able to quit my day job. But I think overall they’re pretty proud of me. I send them early manuscripts, which they usually fight over who gets to read first. My mom has gone on every major research trip with me for books that I’ve published as well as ones that have yet to find a publisher. They celebrate the successes with me and help me find perspective in the middle of rejection.

9. Besides writing, what other interests do you have?

I love watching live theater and exploring the music scene in Nashville. I’m also the aunt of five of the cutest kids ever, so I love to dote on them, traveling to Arizona every chance I get.

10. Can you tell us about what’s coming up next for you writing wise?

My next release is called A Star in the Night. It’s a novella, which is part of A Log Cabin Christmas Collection, releasing from Barbour in September. It’s my first historical (if you don’t count that really bad novel I wrote as a teenager), and I’m thrilled to be among some amazing writers in this collection. Beyond that I’m working on more romantic suspense as well as a full-length contemporary romance, which I’m hoping will find the right publisher soon.

11. How can readers connect with you online?

I post about my misadventures in writing and life in general on my blog at http://www.lizjohnsonbooks.com/  I also tweet at www.twitter.com/lizjohnsonbooks .

Thanks so much for having me. It’s been a pleasure.

Q&A with Dianne Duvall.... and a giveaway!

Thanks so much for having me here at Romance Reviews Today!

1. Tell us about your newest release.

In Darkness Dawns, the first book in my Immortal Guardians paranormal romance series, Music Theory Professor Sarah Bingham wants nothing more than to relax after a long, stressful spring semester. Instead, when insomnia drives her to spend a little time in her garden at dawn, she finds a wounded man staked to the ground, being tortured by two others. Little does she know when she rescues him that Roland Warbrook is far more than a man. Nearly a millennium old, he is an immortal who has acquired a new formidable foe amongst the vampires he hunts, one who has raised an army to defeat him and to destroy the rest of the Immortal Guardians. When Sarah thwarts the vampires by saving Roland, she too becomes targeted by the army and is soon thrust to the forefront of the conflict, aiding the immortals in their quest to defeat the vampires and losing her heart to the dark enigmatic warrior intent on protecting her.

2. Can you tell us a little about your favorite scene in the story?

My favorite romantic scene would be the one that begins with Roland lounging on the steps leading up to the whirlpool tub, watching Sarah blow-dry her hair because it shows so many facets of their relationship: tender, playful and passionate. My favorite action scene is the climax of the novel. For obvious reasons I can’t tell you what happens, but Roland and Sarah both demonstrate such love, heroism and a willingness to sacrifice anything for each other that I just can’t resist it.

3. When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

I first dabbled in fiction when I was twelve or thirteen years old, writing my first manuscript: a teen historical romance. But I didn’t pick up the pen again to pursue the craft seriously and become certain I wanted to make fiction writing my career until I entered college. I first majored in journalism, but swiftly decided non-fiction was not what I enjoyed writing. Romance was. There were just too many stories with happily ever afters dancing around in my head. :-)

4. Where do you get your information or ideas for your stories?

Everywhere. It may seem like a glib response, but it’s true. To give you an example, some of the sources of information that inspired and aided me in the development of the Immortal Guardians’ world (which revolves around immortals and vampires being infected with a virus) included a history of vampire mythology that suggested it began with a misunderstanding of such illnesses as porphyria, a program on Animal Planet that discussed the microscopic yet virtually indestructible Tardigrade or water bear, and a biography of King George III that suggested his madness was a result of syphilis. I really never know what might spark an idea that may blossom into a novel. :-)

5. What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?

I like to alter the media I use to write manuscripts. I’ve found it a very effective way to remedy writer’s block. My first two manuscripts (a medieval romance with paranormal elements and a time-travel romance not yet scheduled for publication) I wrote on my computer. I wrote Darkness Dawns by hand in a spiral notebook. And Night Reigns, the second book in the Immortal Guardians series, I wrote on my Alphasmart NEO.

6. What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your books?

That writing a manuscript is less difficult if I don’t first create a detailed plot or outline. When I outline the novel thoroughly before I begin to write, it restricts my creativity. The story doesn’t always take me where I think it will when I begin to write, so it fares far better if I let it develop as it will instead of trying to forcibly stay with my first idea. Now, when I start a new manuscript, I’m only certain of the beginning, the climax and a couple of scenes in between.

7. What authors or friends influenced you in helping you become a writer?

Every writer who wrote a book I enjoyed influenced me simply by firing my imagination. Julie Garwood, Johanna Lindsey, Julia Quinn and Kinley Macgregor are amongst those authors who inspired my love of historicals. Karen Marie Moning enthralled me with her time-travels. Alexandra Ivy, Gena Showalter, Kresley Cole and Lindsay Sands are amongst the authors who made paranormal romance my favorite genre. Stephen King, too, influenced my writing. Every time I read one of his books, I learn more about writing. I firmly believe every aspiring writer should read his book On Writing. I found it extremely informative. The greatest influence, however, has been my husband, who challenges me intellectually, fuels my creativity, holds nothing back when offering constructive criticism, and supports me in my every endeavor.

8. What does your family think about your career as a published author?

They’re thrilled. Like my husband, my parents have been very supportive and encouraged me every step of the way. They were as excited as I was when I “got the call.” And my husband has been my greatest champion. We’re still celebrating. :-)

9. Besides writing, what other interests do you have?

Outside of writing, my biggest interest is independent filmmaking. I’ve been active in the local independent film industry for quite some time now. I actually just worked all three stages of production on a horror feature film. In pre-production, I worked as casting coordinator and designed the movie poster. In production, I provided special effects makeup and served as script supervisor. (In fact, I edited Night Reigns while I was on the set.) And in post-production, I edited the film, am adding computer generated special effects and will soon create the trailer.

10. Can you tell us about what’s coming up next for you writing wise?

Night Reigns, the second book in the Immortal Guardians series is scheduled for release in December. In it, Marcus’s increasingly erratic behavior draws unwanted concern from his immortal brethren. Cocky on the outside, grieving on the inside, he walks the edge and takes far too many risks. Hoping to divert him from this destructive path, Seth assigns Marcus a new Second (human assistant) . . . one who proves to be immensely distracting and turns his world upside down. I’m currently working on Book 3 in the series, but don’t know yet the release date for it.

Blurb:

In this dazzling, sensual novel, Dianne Duvall beckons readers into a world of vampires, immortals, and humans with extraordinary gifts . . . where passion can last forever, if you're willing to pay the price . . .

Once, Sarah Bingham’s biggest challenge was making her students pay attention in class. Now, after rescuing a wounded stranger, she’s landed in the middle of a battle between corrupt vampires and powerful immortals who also need blood to survive. Roland Warbrook is the most compelling man Sarah has ever laid hands on. But his desire for her is mingled with a hunger he can barely control . . .

In his nine centuries of immortal existence, no woman has tempted Roland as much as Sarah. But asking her to love him is impossible -- when it means forfeiting the world she’s always known, and the life he would do anything to protect.
