Guest Blog: WHAT DO READERS LOVE ABOUT ROMANCE? by Kat Martin

(Check out below for the chance to win a copy of AGAINST THE STORM.)

It’s a question that dozens of people have tried to answer. On Valentine’s Day, article after article attempted to explore the concept. Non-fiction books are written about it, essays are printed. Internet sites Chat about it.

The truth is there is no single answer.

From the time we’re teenagers, we’re thinking about finding a mate. When we’re old and alone, our spouse long gone, we’re remembering the romantic days when we fell in love, the days of our lives we spent with someone who loved us.

From the start, it’s a journey fraught with perils. Today, with people living in cities, the odds of finding the right mate are mind-boggling. Thousands of bars and restaurants, millions of people all searching for someone. People turn to Internet dating to improve their chances of finding a person with the same interests...someone they might have a chance to love.

The same journey happens in a Romance novel and it’s fraught with even more peril. As the reader turns the pages, for a very brief time, he or she gets to feel all the wonderful emotions a man or woman feels when they fall in love.

In my latest book, AGAINST THE STORM, the fourth in my AGAINST series, Trace Rawlins is a man who’s had rotten luck with women, especially redheads. So when Maggie O’Connell, a fiery tempered, red-headed photographer, comes to him for help against a stalker, Trace’s instincts warn him away. He doesn’t trust her and as some of her secrets come to life, Trace is even more determined to stay away from her--no matter how much he wants her in his bed.

But what if Maggie is telling the truth and she really is in danger? No matter his feelings, Trace is determined to keep her safe.

The best part about reading a Romance is that from the very first page, the reader secretly knows that whatever perils this couple faces, whatever suffering they endure, will be worth it.

Because by the last page of the book, these lovers are going to get the happy ending they deserve, the forever kind of love.

I hope you will watch for AGAINST THE STORM, and that you’ll look for AGAINST THE NIGHT and AGAINST THE SUN, coming after the first of the year.

Till then very best wishes and happy reading, Kat

Hi Kat,

Nice to see you! AGAINST THE STORM sounds great. I'll definitely be on the lookout for it.

I love reading romances for the very reasons you mentioned. You know from the beginning that the story is going to end well for the H/H. The fun part is watching them get there. :)

Take care,
Tracey

There's so much bad news out there I need to know I'm going to read something with a happy ending.

Romances take me back in time and propel me into the future. I've learned numerous historical facts. I've visited many foreign exotic places. I've been welcomed into small communities.
It's been a great way to meet new people .

Nothing But Velvet was the first book of yours that I read and loved.

I like that your writing covers historical romance, western romance and contemporary suspense romance.

Keep on writing! Loved the beautiful pictures on your website of your gorgeous Montana home and views from your trips overseas. Thanks for sharing! Best wishes for your "Against" trilogy.

Do you have time to read books? Do you have any favorite author(s) that are a must buy? Finally, Are you able to rest at night or is your mind constantly filled with ideas for your next story?

Hi Kat. I am a big fan of your books. I love reading romance because you get to "travel" to lots of places and times and you get to follow a couple's journey to reaching their happy ending.

I love reading romance, my first love in reading was those "bodice ripper's" as they were dubbed back in the day. I gradually came into the contemporty, woman's ficton and chick lit romance..
There is just so many great stories out there in romanctic book world. what's not to love. We get the combination of romance with the paranormal, or western themed books or historical and regancy, even vampires and werewolve, which is not my thing. There is so many different types of romance to fuel the romantic at heart reader... We just love a HEA...
Are we not just so lucky...
Thanks for the giveaway..

I'm very excited for this new book. I had no idea that this gripping series was being continued.

Good luck with the release.

HI, Ya'll! Interesting comments. Couldn't agree with you more about happy endings. We have enough trouble in our lives. We need something to lift our spirits and romance definitely does that. Laurie asked if I sleep well at night and I can say that my stories often keep me awake. They can be fun or nagging, depending on how well the writing is going. I do have some favorite authors...I read mostly romantic suspense these days...Nora Roberts, Laura Griffin are favorites...I love Joanna Bourne for historical and am looking forward to her new release which is just out. kat

Hi Kat, your new book looks really good. I like the names Trace and Maggie. How do you come up with names for characters in your books? Are they names of people you know you know, or do some names just stand out and you have to use them?

Good luck with your new book, it looks great! :)

Thanks for the contest. Your newest book sounds v.g.

I love your books and loved The Christmas Clock and A Song For My Mother - so very touching.

Just found a copy of Tin Angel. Cannot wait to read it.

Pat--Glad you are enjoying my books! Clock and Song were different for me...Song is being re-issued in paper with a new cover for Christmas. Glad you enjoyed. very best, Kat

Kat Martin said...

Sandra--There are a little over 100 names in a normal book. I keep a massive file of names so it doesn't slow my writing too much. still, I like each name to fit the person so it takes me a while to go through my list.

Dawn-- this cover is one of my all-time favorites. hope you enjoy the book! best, kat

I think any story is better when a romance is in it.

I've enjoyed so many of your books! As to romance, I think it's what many of us wish it could be or hope it could be but it's also a fantasy world and I love to get lost in new worlds.

I think the story is so much better when there is a romance included. even Da Vinci code had a romantic element, as well as Harlan Coben's big bestseller, Tell No One,which was a very big romance. kat

Natalie's Mama--hope you like the new one! kat

Catslady-- you are so right...we love the idea of a perfect romance. It's fun to live in that world and create those stories

Oh, I do love your work and look forward to Against the Storm! Romance is still my go to because it keeps a feeling of hope alive and well. A good romance novel can show that no matter the odds, or the background or past hurts - love can work wondrous magic.

Hi Kat! I read romances for the story, the hero and heroine-their interaction, the escape, and for the hope and belief in happy endings in romance novels.

novels since Flame and the Flower and even before...I always feel so good at the end and the adventure the heroine and hero go through keeps my interest ratched to the max. hope you all enjoy the next three books in the Against Series.
