THE THIRD SECRET – Tara Taylor Quinn
The Chapman Files , Book 3

Romantic Suspense

Chandler , Ohio and Temple , Michigan – October 2010

Kelly is a psychologist in Chandler who loves her work. She recently took in a foster child, Maggie, fourteen-years-old, and hopes to adopt her. She skates for exercise and to think when she is stressed. Kelly receives a phone call from Erin Morgan, a defense attorney, who talks to her about a recent case and asks for advice.

Erin lives in Michigan . Her fiancé, Noah, died three years ago, but she is still close to his family. She receives a call from handyman Rick Thomas, who has been arrested for murder. He found a man's body, Charles, next door to where he is working. Rick has an interesting background of working for the government in covert operations in the Middle East for fifteen years, but there is no way to track this because it is all so secretive. He hires Erin to represent him, but doesn't tell her anything about his former life. The sheriff finds a knife hidden in Rick's room. He is obviously being framed. He is glad that he has the locked storage of his truck camouflaged as a second gas tank. Rick needs to keep himself safe because he is caring for Steven, a mentally challenged man with the mind of a five-year-old who is in a local facility.

Rick tries to track two men who had been involved in the undercover work with him. They are both dead. One of the men committed suicide a year ago, or so the police believe. Rick doesn't accept it. He visits his friend's landlady and is given a package that was left for him a few weeks before his death. A clue? He contacts Sarge, the head of his team, for help and asks for more help from Erin . She is attracted to the handsome man, but can she trust that he is innocent when he refuses to confide in her?

Another fascinating story from the Chapman Files , THE THIRD SECRET is well written with a lot of suspense and a fresh plot. We learn about Rick's secret life, how he served his country and now must find his way out of the morass in which he finds himself. He is a loner who finds it difficult to confide and share his problems. Erin is a warm-hearted woman who wants to do the right thing and do the best for her clients. Although Rick and Erin are attracted to each other, they realize that they must take care of what is going on first. Rick wants to live a simple life and make sure Steven has the best of care, but first he wants to find out why his friends were killed and why someone is framing him. The books are connected by Kelly's story and the Chapman files. They all can stand alone. Book four, THE FOURTH VICTIM, will be released in December 2010.

What a frightening tale! Rick doesn't have many people to rely on with all the clandestine affairs with which he has been involved. He feels he can only rely on himself and possibly Sarge. The story is sure to keep readers interested with not many clues regarding how it will be resolved. A side story regarding Erin 's ex-fiancé's family is also of interest. THE THIRD SECRET is an excellent romantic suspense from the pen of Tara Taylor Quinn.

Guest Blogger: JILL SHURE

Readers often ask where I get my ideas. And I've tried to figure this out myself. I suppose ideas just arrive in my mind in the same way the average person decides what to wear each morning. This skirt with that sweater just seems like a good idea. Something to try on and see if it fits, if it works well.

I also have life experience to draw from. Meaning all those jobs I had early on which were so awful that they've turned into humorous stories. This is most evident in A Clause for Murder where my main character Betsy Ross sells insurance. Yes, I too sold insurance. Life, health, disability, homeowners, and car insurance. And though I learned the business, I never loved the work. Because I knew I wanted to write. I also worked in retail stores, as a teacher, in the New York textile industry, and a number of other places such as the US House of Representatives in Washington for a congressman.

Eventually, everything ends up in my fiction books in some form or another. So I had Betsy Ross sell insurance. Why? Because in a dark way, the industry can be very funny. Just as doctor shows like Scrubs can be funny. Because on the surface, a subject may seem dry, but taken to an exaggerated place, the idea becomes dark, humorous. So it works.

Besides, giving Betsy Ross a sales job in an industry which is very real, gives her a solid background. And since this book is the first in a series, I needed her to have a career under her feet, with a lot of personal time on her hands, so she can solve murders in between selling policies to a bizarre assortment of people.

Spotlight Review:

HAPPY EVER AFTER - Nora Roberts
The Bride Quartet , Book 4
Berkley Trade
ISBN: 978-0-425-23675-8
November 2010
Contemporary Romance

Greenwich, Connecticut - Present Day

As children, best friends Parker Brown, Emma Grant, Laurel McBane, and Mackensie Elliot used to play the Wedding Game, and as adults they've turned their childhood game into a thriving business. Vows is the premier wedding planning company in the area, with Emma taking care of the floral end of the business, Laurel the pastry chef, Mac on photography, and Parker pulling it all together. Having watched her three best friends find the loves of their lives, Parker can't help but envy their happiness, but as event coordinator for Vows, she has too much going on to look for romance.

Then Malcolm Kavanaugh rescues her one night when she is almost in an accident. As he is a friend of Parker's brother Del , and the mechanic who works on both the company vehicles and their personal vehicles, Parker's met Malcolm before. Even—as a dare—kissed him on the Fourth of July. When he dares her to ride home on his motorcycle and ends the ride with a steamy kiss, Parker's intrigued. Mal's nothing like the men she normally dates, and he ignores all of her “back-off” vibes. Is it possible the man she hadn't even been looking for has been in front of her all along?

On the surface, Parker and Malcolm don't have a lot in common, but in HAPPY EVER AFTER, they learn that there is enough to build a relationship on. When Malcolm is first introduced to Parker (in book 2, BED OF ROSES), they strike sparks off one another, and as their friends pair off, Malcolm and Parker are the two singles in a group of couples. Parker likes order and logic and isn't going to be swayed by a sexy guy riding a hot motorcycle...no matter how much he intrigues her. Mal finds Parker attractive and wants to get to know her better, even knowing that a casual relationship with her isn't going to happen. Not only is Parker not the type for casual, Mal's friendship with her brother Del will be destroyed if he does anything to hurt her.

Amidst all of the weddings that Vows puts on, they also have a couple of extra-special ones in their near future, most importantly that of Mac and Carter (from VISION IN WHITE). Throughout the series, it has been fun to watch the special friendship that these four women share and the addition of men to their circle, but it's twice as good, watching as the date for Mac's wedding draws near. A story filled with love, both romantic and friendship-based, humor and memorable characters, HAPPY EVER AFTER is a story I highly recommend.

Q&A with T.C. Archer!!!

1. Tell us about your newest release.

Sasha's Calling, an erotic space opera, is our newest release with Loose Id.

Blurb:

Nothing can stop freelance thief Sasha Smirnov from saving her planet -- except, Dirk, the gorgeous ambassador with polychrome eyes. Is it lust or designer pheromones? He is hot, too hot to resist -- or forget. A single, sizzling kiss burns him into her memory, and her body, but she can't afford to stop for passion, let alone love.
Sasha needs to get as far away from Dirk as possible and take the classified data she stole with her. So she stows away on a ship outward bound, only to discover Dirk's the pilot. Now she can't get away from him, or the system, but he will let her into his bed...

2. Can you tell us a little about your favorite scene in the story?

That would have to be the scene where Dirk saves Sasha from a very nasty character while in the bowels of The Rock, a planet which is part of a loose association of planetoids called the Bad Lands. This edgy scene highlights the sci-fi elements to a T, the villain is a vivid futuristic bionic man, and the resulting chemistry between Sasha and Dirk is hot, hot, hot.

3. How long have each of you been writing?
Shawn--I've been writing for ten years.
Evan--I started writing in high school.

4. You write as a team. How do you manage to coordinate this?Very carefully! When one of us gets an idea for a story, we usually start by writing an opening scene or two, then share it with the other. Depending on the genre, we decide who 'goes next' in our round robin. Evan decides the underlying premise for all sci fi--his science background and experience with writing sci-fi makes him the resident expert on all things technical. Shorter novels, we generally panster our way through. Longer novels, we plot out once we get a few chapters the way into the book. We write and rewrite one another's versions, so the end result is a conglomeration that is its own entity. The book makes so many passes between us, we forget who wrote what!

5. Do you have conflicts?
No serious conflicts. We've been writing together for about six years now, and have a couple overall ground rules that we really live by, the most important of which is: there are no deal breakers. If we find something we simply can't agree on, we just find another way to do it.

6. What surprising things have you learned while writing?

It's even harder than we thought--and we knew it was hard!

7. What authors or friends have influenced you in helping you become a writer?
First, one of our biggest influences is a good friend of ours, Kim Comeau. Kim was leading the writer's workshop where we met, and her knowledge of writing is amazing. Her patience and willingness to read and reread our work has been invaluable. As for published writers who have influenced us, Stephen King is a master. Believe it not, some of the older hard boiled detective authors like Nero Wolf and Mickey Spellane are big influences. Ray Bradbury, Orson Scott Card and even Anne Rice are a few more.

8. Can you tell us about what is coming next for you?

We're currently working on another space opera where our heroine's boss gets her a reality vacation--only she doesn't know it! The vacation turns very erotic, and has a few surprise turns for her.

9. How can readers find more about you and how to reach you on the world wide web?

Readers can visit us at http://www.tcarcher.com/. We announce upcoming releases, contests and any important news. They can follow the link to our blog to interact with us and, of course, emails are always welcome at info@tcarcher.com

A Perfect 10

November 2010
Paranormal Romance

1950 Ohio and 1462 Sweden

Recently transferred to Lakeview High, Grace Gladwell has pretty much given up on having someone to call a friend. Moving from town to town, her father's strictness and daily use of alcohol pretty much ruin any chance of getting close to someone...though for the past few months, she has been spending time getting to know Johnny, the high school football jock. Nervous when people get too close, Grace shuns a goodnight kiss when the couple leaves a drive-in movie. She's afraid of what her father may do if he sees them even touching. But Johnny convinces Grace that her father is surely asleep and will never notice a thing; just this once she gives in to her need to feel cared for. Unfortunately for Grace, her father does see, reaching his own conclusions.

Within seconds of getting into the house, her father slaps her face and calls her a whore. Trying to convince him it was nothing but a kiss, he pushes her and she hits her head, and in that instant, Grace's life is changed forever. Waking later, Grace feels different somehow and, looking around, meets a handsome man with the most mystical blue eyes who calls himself Michael, her guide. Something in his eyes seems to tell a story yet untold. She has a choice to stay where she is, but Grace wants the opportunity to see her life again with her oldest friend, one she doesn't even remember, so Michael grants her wish.

It's medieval Switzerland as Grace watches a mighty warrior whipped for something as simple as having a dog named Lucy as a pet. Mercenary captain Christian Durand stoically takes the whipping, but when his cold-hearted father demands the dog be killed as further punishment, Christian cries at the needless loss. Feeling a kindred spirit and knowing Christian is in need of a friend, she tells Michael she wants to comfort him, and before you know it, Grace is beside Christian. Well sort of…she's not exactly human, and Christian wonders if his pain from the beating has affected his mind and he's seeing ghosts. It doesn't take long before the two experience a closeness that transcends time, but there is also wickedness and heartache right around the corner, as the vampire queen, Nim Wei, sets her sights on the very virile Christian.

The play between good and evil is vividly evident from page one in DEVIL AT MIDNIGHT as the reader gets to know the key players. It's hard to imagine that a father could be so hungry for power that he would stop at nothing for control, possibly betraying his own son, but that's who Gregori is. Nim Wei, as the evil vampire, is after souls in a big way and doesn't care who she hurts to get them, but there's plenty more backstabbing to keep your interest. The meaty character development of Christian as the tortured, strong, and very sexy hero is appealing and realistic. Grace is pitch perfect as the impish and very naughty heroine determined to rescue her friend who ends up being so much more. This tale defines sensuality.

Emotionally moved, I still found myself wondering how in the world Ms. Holly would succeed with a love match with a ghost from a different century and a medieval soldier. Well, her ambitious undertaking with the DEVIL AT MIDNIGHT convinced me. She has achieved an extraordinary story of love, earning DEVIL AT MIDNIGHT a Perfect 10.

Book Giveaway:

RUNNING HOT by Jayne Ann Krentz
Mass Paperback

Blurb:
Ex-cop Luther Malone, lifelong member of the secretive paranormal organization known as the Arcane Society, is waiting to meet Grace Renquist. Hired as an aura-reading consultant in the quest for a murder suspect, she's got zero field experience. She's from tiny Eclipse Bay, Oregon. She's a librarian, for heaven's sake.
As for Grace, she's not expecting much either from Malone, who walks with a cane and isn't so good with a gun. Nice résumé for a bodyguard . . .

But even before they reach their hotel in Maui—where they'll be posing as honeymooners—Grace and Luther feel the electric charge between them. Problem is, they need to remain vigilant day and night, because it soon becomes clear there's more going on here. Rogue sensitives—operatives for the underground group Nightshade—are pouring into the luxury resort like there's a convention. Grace recognizes those dark spikes in their auras. She saw the same pattern in someone else in another life—a life she hasn't revealed to Luther or anyone else. And she understands how dangerous these people can be . . . especially with those para-hunters at their sides.

While the pair's employers at Jones & Jones scramble to get them backup, Luther and Grace have to think on their feet. The criminals in their midst aren't just high-level sensitives: They've enhanced their talents with a potent—and unpredictable— drug. And as Grace knows all too well, if you don't control your powers, your powers will control you. . . .

Q&A with Kylie Brant!

1. Tell us about your newest release.
DEADLY INTENT is book four of my acclaimed Mindhunters series. The books are loosely connected, involving characters who work for the same forensics firm that consult with law enforcement on high profile crimes. In this story, forensic linguist Macy Reid and fellow investigator Kellan Burke are paired up to track an eleven-year-old girl who has been kidnapped--for the second time.

2. Can you tell us a little about your favorite scene in the story?
There were a few of them :) Kell was a fun hero to write. He spends more time than he should trying to provoke a reaction from Macy. In one scene, they are working together in her room after 'lifting' a file from the Colorado Bureau of Investigation officers that they're working with. When one of the CBI agents knocks at Macy's door, she silently orders Kell into the bathroom. He refuses to go. She manages to...ah...gain his cooperation, and her efforts bring a smile every time I read it! The story is so suspenseful as they race against the clock to find the girl, that the lighter scenes are a bit of relief.

3. When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?
When I discovered that my favorite authors couldn't write fast enough to keep me in reading material! I decided to write to pass the time while waiting for their next books. I never stopped.

4. Where do you get your information or ideas for your stories?

With the Internet, research is sooo much easier than it used to be. I like to use real experts in various fields to lend credibility to my plots. It's so much simpler to make contacts via the net. For this book, I spoke with an assistant director for the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, an expert in security systems, and a man who makes masks. I also talked to wilderness experts in Colorado.

As for the ideas...I always tell people that I have a dark side, LOL!

5. What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?
I'm not sure it's all that interesting. But I have to solve a play a few hands of online bridge before I can settle down to write. This, of course, after I've checked email, Twitter, Facebook, etc.

6. What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your books?
I'm always amazed at the generosity of people I contact. Not everyone responds to my emails but nearly half do. And I'm so appreciative when people give of their time to let me into their world, just a little. I'm sort of a research fanatic and I want to be sure I have my facts straight. I get to talk to amazing people with intriguing jobs in the course of researching the books. As a result, I'm a fountain of random bits of trivia, most of it inappropriate for dinner conversation :) But hey, you never know when details on defleshing bones might come in handy....

7. What authors or friends influenced you in helping you become a writer?
I think my favorite authors influenced me, simply by writing marvelous books, filled with characters I didn't want to let go of after the stories ended. I was inspired by authors like Nora Roberts, Linda Howard, Elizabeth Lowell and Patricia Gardner Evans.

8. What does your family think about your career as a published author?

My kids' most frequent response to that question is "ka-ching" . They tend to be impressed by advance checks. Other than that, I get my share of ribbing from them. My husband is my biggest fan--he reads all my books.

9. Besides writing, what other interests do you have?
I also teach full-time in an elementary special education classroom. Any spare time we have we like to spend hanging out with friends and family. In the fall we spend a lot of weekends tailgating at football games with some of the kids and their friends.

10. Can you tell us about what’s coming up next for you writing wise?

DEADLY DREAMS, book 5 in the Mindhunters series will be released in April 2011 and DEADLY SINS in August 2011.
