Q&A with H.P. Mallory!

1. Tell us about your newest release.
Well, my newest release is really both of my releases, as they were at the same time. Fire Burn and Cauldron Bubble centers around the life of a woman who realizes she’s a witch and realizes she possesses incredible talents that put her at the top of the Underworld’s most wanted list. To Kill A Warlock is about a fairy in law enforcement who must solve the whodunit before she’s the number one suspect.

2. Can you tell us a little about your favorite scene in the story?

In Fire Burn, I love the scenes in the fairy village because I really got to use my imagination and creativity. In Warlock, I love the scenes after Knight drinks a potion that makes him super horny.

3. When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

I’ve wanted to be a writer all my life. Ever since I was a little girl, I was writing or thinking about stories.

4. Where do you get your information or ideas for your stories?

They just sort of occur to me. I just think about different story lines and wonder if they would make good books.

5. What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?

Hmm, I don’t really have one, I don’t think. I’m just always thinking about things that could happen in my books—when I’m driving, in boring meetings, etc. I do all the creating in my head, ahead of time so I know exactly what will happen in each chapter.

6. What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your books?

Just that I had the strength of mind and determination to finish a book. It’s a pretty big accomplishment, especially if the book is pretty long like Fire Burn is.

7. What authors or friends influenced you in helping you become a writer?

My critique partner, Lori Brighton, was a huge help because she really helped open my eyes to the publishing world and acted as a great critique partner to make my writing as strong as it could be.

8. What does your family think about your career as a published author?

My family is very supportive. My mom is my editor so she’s very involved!

9. Besides writing, what other interests do you have?

Well, I work full time and I have a 16 month old son so I don’t really have time for other interests, unfortunately. When I do, though, I love to travel. I lived abroad in the UK for two years and that was one of the best adventures of my life.

10. Can you tell us about what’s coming up next for you writing wise?

I’m currently working on the follow up book to Fire Burn and I’m halfway through. I hope to release that in the next three months. I’m also working on a graphic novel/ comic book of Warlock but I’m not sure how long that will take.

THE DARKEST HOUR – Maya BanksThe KGI Series, Book 1Berkley Sensation
ISBN: 978-0-425-22794-7
September 2010
Romantic Suspense

United States and Columbia - Present Day

It has been a year since ex-Navy SEAL Ethan Kelly’s wife was killed in a plane crash on the way home from a relief mission. He still feels guilty for not having been the husband Rachel deserved. They had a lot of problems in their marriage, mostly his fault. His brothers have been trying to get him to join KGI (Kelly Group International), an agency that is hired for top-secret operations, but Ethan is lost in his grief. He receives a Fed-Ex package with a note that says "Your wife is alive.” and some photos that look like Rachel; coordinates indicate it comes from a small village in Columbia. Could a drug cartel have her, or is this a terrible joke? The area of the coordinates is where she went on her relief mission. Ethan goes to his brothers, Sam, Donovan, and Garrett and asks for help, and they all get to work making rescue plans.

Rachel is in bad condition. She barely remembers her name, but she does remember a shadowy figure—someone who tried to help her. The team comes in with guns blazing and they rescue her. She has serious problems; the Columbians have been drugging her, and now she is addicted and in withdrawal. Ethan stays with her in Costa Rica until she can safely make it home. He prays that the drugs didn’t affect her mind. She has a lot of memory loss. What will she do when she remembers their marriage problems?

Meanwhile at home, parents Marlene and Frank Kelly find a teenager named Rusty raiding their refrigerator, hungry and exhausted. Marlene, who is always picking up strays, feeds her and invites her to stay.

Sam is determined to find out why the drug cartel imprisoned Rachel and who sent the information to Ethan. He decides to go back to the jungle, find out what is going on, and get revenge.

The Kelly family is very close, the kind of family that we would all like to have, warm and trusting. You can sense how much they all love each other, with a lot of teasing and horse play among the brothers, but there were a few words used throughout that made me flinch. Ethan is trying to be the most loving husband that he can be, but he is fearful about Rachel remembering their former relationship. She is very troubled and trying to cope with her addiction and what has happened to her. All of the brothers are wonderful secondary characters, especially Garrett; and Marlene is a special mother to them all. Readers will really like this terrific family.

THE DARKEST HOUR begins with Rachel and Ethan trying to get their marriage on track after her rescue. You can expect some scorching love scenes; the suspense plays second fiddle to the romance. The suspense comes in the latter part of the book and is very frightening as they finally solve the puzzle of why everything happened the way it did. You won’t want to miss THE DARKEST HOUR, the first book in the new KGI series, with more books to come: NO PLACE TO RUN in December 2010, and HIDDEN AWAY in March 2011.

A Perfect 10:

1022 EVERGREEN PLACE – Debbie Macomber
Cedar Cove Series – Book 10A Perfect 10
MIRA
ISBN-13: 978-0-7783-2806-3
September 2010
Contemporary Romance

Cedar Cove, Washington – Present Day

The last time we visited the town of Cedar Cove, Mary Jo Wyse had just given birth to David Rhodes’s baby. In a stable with a few sheep, a donkey, and a cantankerous camel looking on, tiny Noelle came into this world with the help of firefighter Mack McAfee, who immediately fell in love with both the baby and her mother. Now, Mary Jo lives in the duplex next door to Mack and pays a reduced rent to an unknown landlord. Said landlord is really Mack, but he knows if he tells Mary Jo, she’ll want to pay the going rate (which she can’t afford), or worse yet, she’ll move out. Wanting to keep her close, he asked her to marry him, and she accepted, and when he broke off the engagement, things became strained between them. Mack is so in love with this woman he doesn’t know what to do. He just knows he wants to love and protect her and little Noelle. But Mary Jo doesn’t want to be protected. She had enough of that from her domineering brothers, and when she moved to Cedar Cove she was hoping to get away from that kind of smothering love.

Mary Jo is totally in love with Mack, but she doesn’t trust herself or her decisions. She thought she loved David Rhodes, and look where that got her. Now she’s alone, and David could care less about their daughter, but still, that hasn’t prevented him from threatening her with a custody suit if she tries to collect support. Mary Jo will work this problem out by herself. She doesn’t need Mack’s help or help from her brothers. Meanwhile, she just found a cache of old love letters from World War II, and she’s hoping that she can mend fences with Mack by asking for his help to find their owner.

A couple of months ago, Lincoln Wyse married Lori Bellamy just a few days after he met her. He was in town to check up on his sister, Mary Jo, when he found Lori. He fell in love instantly, and he’s never been happier. But when Lori’s father starts making trouble for Linc and his new business in town, things begin to look dark.

Will Jefferson has decided that he needs a woman. Not just any woman, but local artist Shirley Bliss. It shouldn't be too much trouble getting her to fall into bed with him; after all, no woman has ever said no to him. However, when Shirley not only turns him down but falls for his friend, Will has some thinking to do!

Rachel Peyton hasn’t told her new husband, Bruce, that she’s pregnant. She can’t. It might upset the delicate balance of their relationship with his teenage daughter, Jolene, who isn’t taking to their marriage very well. Jolene is making life quite difficult for Rachel, but she’ll wait the girl out. There’s still time to put off telling Bruce about the new baby and, until then, maybe she can smooth the way with Jolene.

1022 EVERGREEN PLACE is a sure-fire hit! The tenth book in the Cedar Cove series, this story is the best yet. The characters are dynamic, and their stories are riveting. The story focuses on Mary Jo and Mack and the old letters, but alternating chapters bring us into several subplots around Cedar Cove. The other residents joining Mary Jo and Mack as secondary characters are: Charlotte and Ben Rhodes, who are trying to help Mary Jo handle Ben’s son, David; and Sheriff’s deputy Gloria Ashton, Mack's stepsister and daughter of Roy and Corrie McAfee. Many other personalities grace these pages, and the story rounds out to a bit of a mystery about Gloria, which will pick up again in the next book. I can’t wait, but in the meantime, if you haven’t read these stories, be sure to check the list of all the Cedar Cove books which can be found on the author’s website: www.debbiemacomber.com.

Even though this is the tenth novel in The Cedar Cove Series, it picks right up and runs by itself. The only complaint I have is that I finished too soon and I want more! Alas, we have a bit of a wait until next year when 1105 YAKIMA STREET is available.

Until then, 1022 EVERGREEN PLACE is the best book ever! I couldn’t put it down, and neither will you. That said, it deserves RRT’s Perfect 10 award and the opportunity to be a contender for the Best Book of 2010.

Spotlight Review:

IMMORTAL SEA – Virginia Kantra
The Children of the Sea, Book 4
Berkley Sensation
ISBN: 978-0-425-23747-2
September 2010
Paranormal Romance

Copenhagen, Denmark, Sixteen Years Ago, and the Present in World’s End, Maine

At the beginning of time, the children of fire rebelled against the children of earth, sea, and sky. Fairfolk escaped to the hills, while merfolk—selkie and finfolk—went to the sea. They are fewer in number than the children of fire (demons) who have strengthened and multiplied.

Elizabeth Ramsey comes to Copenhagen on vacation before she begins med school. One evening while walking down the street, she is accosted by three men. Another man appears out of the darkness and rescues her. He is tall, with white-blond hair, and wears a long leather coat. When he walks her to the main street, she inadvertently touches him, and he misconstrues the touch. To his kind, a merfolk warden of the Northern Deeps, a touch means either fighting or making love. He takes her to an isolated spot and makes delicious love to her, then walks her to her hotel without another word.

Now, sixteen years later, Elizabeth is living on the island of World’s End as the one and only doctor for the residents. Zack, fifteen years old, and Emily, seven years old, accompany her. Zack is having problems getting through his grief at the death of his father, and Elizabeth hopes, with less work, to spend more time with her children.

Morgan arrives on the island following his prince, Lord Conn. Morgan worries about his people who are dying, but Lord Conn believes they can strengthen the merfolk by cohabiting with humans. As Morgan watches, a boy is being taunted by two other boys, and they get into a fight. The one boy is stronger than Morgan thought possible, and when he goes up to him and looks into his eyes, he is surprised to recognize him as finfolk. And when Elizabeth drives up looking for her son, Morgan recognizes her...could Zack be his son? He meets with Elizabeth and is still attracted to her, and she to him, but she pretends to be indifferent. What will she do if Morgan wants a relationship with their son? She has no idea who or what he is, but she does know that her temperature escalates when she is near him.

IMMORTAL SEA is a fascinating story. Although it can stand on its own, I am sorry that I haven’t read the novels leading up to this one. There is a prequel to the series in each of the following two anthologies, SHIFTER (March 2008) and BURNING UP (August 2010). Book one of The Children of the Sea series is SEA WITCH, July 2008; book two is SEA FEVER, August 2008, and book three is SEA LORD, May 2009. In IMMORTAL SEA, many characters from the previous books appear, merfolk happily married to humans and who appear perfectly human as long as they stay on land, but are shape-shifters in the sea.

Morgan and Elizabeth are likeable characters, although Morgan has to learn a few human traits, like empathy and compassion, but even so, there is something about him that will make readers' hearts beat a little faster! Elizabeth is a strong woman; she is determined to protect her child, and she isn’t sure that she can trust Morgan. He admires her strength, and her strength makes him want her even more. He also wants his son, particularly if he really is finfolk. He wants to protect him and teach him his nature. As things heat up between Morgan and Elizabeth, for the first time, he begins to feel real affection toward Elizabeth and her family. You can expect some very hot romantic scenes in IMMORTAL SEA. I really enjoyed this book—a lot. It was a bit different from the usual paranormals, and I plan to read more about Ms. Kantra’s mesmerizing merfolk. Coming soon: FORGOTTEN SEA.

CROSS YOUR HEART - Michele BardsleyA Broken Heart NovelSignet Eclipse
ISBN: 978-0-451-23105-5
September 2010
Paranormal Romance

Broken Heart, Oklahoma - Present Day

Life in Broken Heart is always a bit on the unusual side; after all, the town is full of parakind, and as far as mankind is concerned, Broken Heart doesn’t even exist. Yet, for Elizabeth Bretton, life is about to get even more unusual. A widow with her unhappy marriage behind her, Elizabeth has built a nice life for herself in the town her ancestors helped found. Being a vampire has some definite perks (no more aging!); she has a wonderful group of friends and enjoys seeing them happily in love, even though she believes that romance and love are not in the cards for her. Then Elizabeth receives a jewelry box that once belonged to her ancestress, and it brings with it something determined to kill Elizabeth, and someone hoping to right a wrong. After an attack by a disembodied voice, another voice, this time female, urges Elizabeth to the woods, where she finds a skeleton...and then a were-jaguar.

Tezozomoc “Tez” Jones is completely different from any man Elizabeth has ever met, or been attracted to. He saves her from whatever chased her in the woods, teases her and propositions her in ways that Elizabeth is completely unprepared for, and takes care of her the way no one else has ever done. He’s determined to protect her from whatever attacked her, in spite of the fact that nobody, not even Queen Patricia, can tell if it’s a ghost or a demon that is causing Elizabeth problems. Yet, they soon find out that the problems aren’t confined to Elizabeth, and all hell is breaking loose in Broken Heart. But, no matter what’s been unleashed upon the parakind in town, Tez is determined that the woman he already thinks of as his will come to no harm.

More than Elizabeth’s disbelief in a personal happily-ever-after gets turned upside down in CROSS YOUR HEART. Legend has it that the town was cursed so that any woman who found love would also find heartbreak, thanks to the infidelity of one of the town’s founders, and his wife’s subsequent suicide. The curse was supposedly broken when the vampires came to town, but Elizabeth is noticing unhappiness within the marriages of some of her friends. The strange happenings lead Elizabeth and Tez to a century-old mystery and some shocking secrets. Fans of the Broken Heart series will enjoy the chance to revisit favorite characters and to learn more about Elizabeth and see her find her perfect, if somewhat surprising, match. A wealthy upbringing, a marriage that was basically arranged to a man who enjoyed variety, and her life as a socialite paint a very prim and proper picture of Elizabeth. She’s shocked to find herself attracted to Tez and his crude speaking and irreverent ways. Even more stunning to Elizabeth, though, is the thought that maybe love and romance are possible for her after all.

As it is part of a series, it might be helpful to read the books in order to have a better grasp on the town and its inhabitants. However, for those unfamiliar with the books, CROSS YOUR HEART stands well enough on its own, and is a thoroughly enjoyable tale.

IMPROPER LADIES - Amanda McCabeSignet Eclipse - Double Book
ISBN: 978-0-451-23108-6
September 2010
Regency Romance

Do you miss the traditional Regency romances the mainstream publishers used to publish? Signet is betting you do. Here are two more favorites by Amanda McCabe to follow the March double book, SCANDALOUS BRIDES.

THE GOLDEN FEATHER
London and Wycombe-on-Sea, 1814

The Earl of Lyndon put an end to his second son's scapegrace ways after his third duel. He bought Justin a commission and had him sent to India. About the same time, a drunken Lawrence Aldritch stumbled in front of a moving carriage and left his widow a scanty few pounds and that evening's winnings, the deed to a gambling establishment.

Four years later, a much soberer Justin Seward, the new Earl of Lyndon, returns to London to find his younger brother Harry following his early example. In hopes of turning Harry away from a dissolute life without coming the heavy, Justin accompanies him to the exclusive Golden Feather gaming house. When Harry foolishly precipitates a brawl, and Justin approaches the owner to offer to pay for repairs to the establishment, he is intrigued by her mystery and beauty.

With the proceeds from the sale of The Golden Feather added to the income from the last four years, Caroline Aldritch can now retire her mask, wig, and Mrs. Archer identity and resume a respectable life. At last she can remove her beloved younger sister Phoebe from her expensive school and give her a come out, making all the misery of running a gaming club worthwhile. Once Phoebe is settled in a good marriage, Caro plans to live quietly. Her acceptance of a life alone, however, is greatly disturbed by thoughts of Lord Lyndon.

The end of the London Season is nearly over, and as interested in each other as Caroline and Justin are, neither expects to ever meet again. Justin accedes to his mother's wishes for the family—the countess and her two sons—to spend the holiday in Wycombe-on-Sea with her good friend Lady Bellweather and her daughters. Caroline takes the first steps toward re-entering Society by taking a cottage by the sea...in Wycombe...

Fate plunks a pair of responsible adults with strong attractions for one another into neighboring houses in a holiday town. Smooth sailing ahead for a romance? Not with Caroline's fear of exposure as Mrs. Archer. Not with Justin's fear Caroline would discover his past and think he was cut from the same cloth as her wastrel husband. And certainly not with each having an impulsive young sibling to chaperone. The younger set, including the eldest Bellweather daughter, whose mother pushes her at Justin, adds many lighthearted moments to the story, though the main plotline is not without its own humor amidst the depth of emotion.

THE RULES OF LOVE
London and just outside Town

With her parents and her husband dead, Rosalind Chase is responsible for earning a living for herself and her younger brother Allen, just eighteen and supposed to be in school in Cambridge. Rosalind owns and runs Mrs. Chase's Seminary for Young Ladies. She's also the anonymous author of the popular book, A Lady's Rules for Proper Behavior. Allan has fallen in with bad company and borrowed money to pay his gambling "debts of honor." Now the bankers are dunning Rosalind for payment. To top it all, her book is falling out of favor with the ton, and she is sure Lord Morley's influence is behind all her troubles. With the school closing for the Season, Rosalind is determined to do something about it and leaves for London.

Michael Bronston, Viscount Morley lives a pleasure-seeking life. Rules annoy him, and being handed a copy of that blasted rule book by that prudish headmistress at his sister's school annoys him even more.

In a lively tale of opposites attracting, Rosalind and Michael are bound to come together with a resounding crash. With a supporting cast that includes Michael's sweet young sister Violet and their awful father, plus Rosalind's friends, the Duke and Duchess of Wayland among others, THE RULES OF LOVE is an enjoyable read. Over and above the romance and bit of suspense, it says something about the role of rules on society.

Since her debut in 2001, Amanda McCabe has established herself as a creative writer who can be counted on to produce original storylines, uncommon settings and intelligent, well-developed characters. She has an obvious affection for her creations that is readily transmitted to her readers. I highly recommend THE RULES OF LOVE to everyone looking for rich and entertaining love stories.

A Perfect 10:

ME, MYSELF, AND WHY? - MaryJanice Davidson
A Perfect 10St. Martin's Press
ISBN: 978-0-312-53117-1
September 2010
Chic Lit Thriller

Minneapolis, Minnesota - Present Day

Though Cadence Jones is an FBI agent, she's not your typical button-down suit one would expect from a government organization. For one, Cadence is part of a covert branch, the Bureau of False Flag Ops (BOFFO), who track down what would be considered unusual felons. Second, the branch is staffed with agents with rather unusual skills and personalities. Third, and finally, Cadence works with her sisters, Shiro and Adrienne, to solve the cases, an unusual and unique partnership. So, if there is one word to describe BOFFO, it would be 'UNUSUAL'.

In many ways, Cadence is just like the girl next door—fun, likes to go out with her girlfriends, loves trying new recipes, and is very close to her sisters. On that last point, one might say Cadence is extremely close to her sisters, if one understands that, in this case, her sisters are in actuality two split personalities that developed after Cadence witnessed a traumatic event as a child. When one realizes that BOFFO not only employs Cadence with her Multiple Personality Disorder (MPD) but other equally as dysfunctional individuals—sociopaths, kleptomaniacs, paranoid psychotics—it's immediately clear that ME, MYSELF, AND WHY? is going to be an unusual (yes, there's that word again), but amusing and often laugh-out-loud ride.

I usually write reviews in third person, but have to be a little more personal with this one. Cadence Jones is a character I can't say I've ever seen before, and I have to say that, for once, I questioned the author's sanity/temerity? Is MaryJanice Davidson brilliant? Or is she CRAZY? I'm going to go with brilliant because I literally devoured this book in a few hours and enjoyed every word I ate with my eyes. It's not too many authors who can make readers look past things like MPD and pyromania to the humor and mystery of a thriller. It's very few authors who can make one enjoy and understand a story where the main character is actually three in one body. However, it's very clear from the start who is in control—Cadence, Shiro, or Adrienne—and readers will quickly be invested in trying to figure out which situations will bring out which sister. A bit of background is shared, hopefully more to come, to explain what happened to Cadence to cause the split. But the bigger question facing her is does she want to fix things, and if so, how will her life change as a result?

That question and others will be answered in future tales in the trilogy and I'm sure new ones will be posed. The unusualness (can't seem to stop using this word) of the main character and theme of the story is intriguing and weird and thoroughly enjoyable, and earns ME, MYSELF, AND WHY? a Perfect 10.

Interview with Amber Quill Press author, Kelli Wilkins

1. Tell us about your newest release.

My newest Amber Quill Press “Amber Heat” romance is a fantasy/historical called A Midwinter Night’s Delights. It’s the scorching sequel to A Midsummer Night’s Delights.

The book follows the continuing sexual adventures of newlyweds Annabelle & Julian. In the last book, they went to a special ball at the Marquis of Demby’s estate and learned about their passionate sexual natures. Now they’re back to attend a midwinter ball. But there’s one catch, for the last few months they’ve been a little too wild and have to learn self-restraint – at the hands of the marquis and his wife.

Here’s the full summary:

A Midwinter Night’s Delights

Julian and Annabelle are back for another naughty ball!

The Marquis of Demby’s Midsummer Ball transformed Julian and Annabelle forever. No longer shy about satisfying their sexual urges, the young newlyweds give in to their wanton desires whenever the mood strikes—even if it’s during a dinner party. Anything goes in their open marriage, and they’re not ashamed to share their passions with others.

But everything changes when they are sent to Vincent and Sabrina’s estate to be disciplined. Before they can participate in the Midwinter Ball, they must learn self-control. Carnal punishments and sensual lessons are just a few of the erotic surprises awaiting them…before the ball even begins!

Although A Midwinter Night’s Delights is a sequel, it stands alone as a single read. It was released on September 12 and is available in a variety of electronic formats. The book link is: http://amberquill.com/AmberHeat/MidwinterNightsDelights.html

2. Can you tell us a little about your favorite scene in the story?

The whole book was a lot of fun to write, so it’s hard to pick one favorite. Many of the scenes in A Midwinter Night’s Delights are very graphic, but two scenes stand out in my mind as particularly sensual.

In one scene, Julian is given the task of pleasuring an incredibly shy woman. He has to learn how to focus on her needs and her body, while earning her trust. The scene is hot, and yet has a tender, innocent side to it.

Later in the book Annabelle and Julian get rewarded for “learning their lessons” and receive a special kind of massage. As readers of the first book know, A Midsummer Night’s Delights was very graphic and hot – the follow-up story takes Julian and Annabelle into a world where they must learn how to submit to their “punishments” and control themselves sexually.

I also enjoyed writing the scenes where Julian is protesting the punishments and gets a little snippy with the marquis, Vincent, and his wife, Sabrina. I tried to infuse a little bit of humor into those scenes.

3. When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

I’ve been writing stories ever since I can remember. When I was in high school, I wrote short stories and plays for fun and I took a lot of creative writing classes. After college, I enrolled in a Commercial Writers’ Program and read some of my stories in class. At the time, I was writing short horror fiction. Everyone liked the stories and encouraged me to submit them for publication. One day, I read a short romance in a magazine, and said “I can write that.” So I did. A few months later, I sold my first “10-Minute Love Story” to the Sun – and from there I was hooked. I became a regular Sun romance author and eventually branched out into writing science fiction stories for the Sun as well.

Later, I submitted three romance novellas to the Amber Quill Press writing contest, and they contracted me for all three! At the time, I was writing “traditional” (aka not-so-spicy) romances, but I had never written an erotic romance. In keeping with my knack for writing in different genres, I submitted stories in three different romance categories. A Most Unusual Princess is a fantasy, The Dark Lord is a gothic historical, and The Sexy Stranger is a contemporary.

After these novellas were released, I kept writing erotic romances. A Most Unusual Princess spawned two sequels, Dalton’s Temptation and The Pauper Prince. Although I’m drawn to historical/fantasy settings, if I get a great idea for a story I’ll go with it, regardless of the genre. A Midwinter Night’s Delights is my 11th romance with Amber Quill Press.

4. Where do you get your information or ideas for your stories?

Ideas are everywhere; you just need to find them. I tend to be a bit nosy and I like to explore, so I come up with ideas just by noticing my surroundings and observing what’s going on around me. I also have a vivid imagination, which helps give me ideas. Once in a while, a story idea or character will come to me out of nowhere. Sometimes I take two ideas and combine them into one, or I take an idea and ask myself “what if” to invent new scenarios and plotlines.

Sometimes when I’m mulling over ideas or trying to think of plotlines, I’ll play the ‘what if’ game and ask myself, “what if….” And see what I come up with. (One of my science fiction stories recently appeared in an anthology entitled What If… so I think it’s a useful phrase!)

For example, my paranormal romance, Confessions of a Vampire’s Lover, came about because I had a “what if” idea: What if a vampire went to the beach and fell in love?

Beauty & the Bigfoot was inspired by a wacky “what if” idea that popped into my head: “What if a girl fell in love with a Sasquatch?” The more I thought about it, the more the story unfolded.

I have entire folders of ideas just waiting to be developed. I find ideas everywhere – while driving, watching people at the store, from overheard conversations… usually something catches my attention and I let my mind wander, to see where the ideas take me.

5. What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?

My biggest writing quirk is that I write everything in longhand. Every short story and novel all start out on paper, then I revise and edit them as I type them up.

A second writing quirk is that I write in several genres, including romance and horror. Some people can’t quite understand how I’m able to write romances one minute, then create spooky horror stories the next. (I like to think that one half of my brain writes the horror and the other half writes the romance.) I’ve also written dozens of sci fi stories and four non-fiction books, so I pretty much write everything. I like switching back and forth between genres because it allows me to explore different plots, characters, and settings.

6. What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your books?

I think that writing is an ongoing learning process. Every time I sit down to write, I learn something about the craft of writing (how to say something better, improve dialog, give more attention to detail, etc.) When I’m plotting my stories, I make an outline of the scenes and the characters and do a character background sheet. So in theory, I should know everything about the characters and plot. However, the writing process always finds ways to surprise me.

Sometimes I’ll be writing a scene and the characters “take over” and decide that the scene should go a different way, or something I planned on happening changes. I thought I knew all about my characters before I started writing The Pauper Prince and A Midsummer Night’s Delights – but I was wrong! One thing I learned while writing those stories was that characters can jump off the page and take the story in a different direction. Even though I created the characters, I was surprised to discover a different side to Prince Allan (in The Pauper Prince) and Julian (from A Midsummer Night’s Delights).

Another thing I’ve learned over the years of writing romance is that I have to turn off my “internal editor” every so often when it comes to writing some of the more explicit love scenes. My romances with Amber Quill Press not only run the gamut of different genre categories, but they also have different heat levels ranging from 1 to 3. For example, A Most Unusual Princess is a heat level of 1, (relatively mild), Trust with Hearts is in the middle, with a heat level of 2, and A Midwinter Night’s Delights is a scorching hot level 3.

7. What authors or friends influenced you in helping you become a writer?

I’ve been reading since I was very young, so I’d have to say that every book I’ve read has influenced me in some way. Some authors are great examples of voice, mood, or tone, while others are excellent with details, plot, or characters. I think the more you read (in any genre) the more you learn what works in a story and what doesn’t.

When I was staring out, I joined writers’ groups and took writing classes, so I was fortunate to receive encouragement and feedback from other writers. I have a few writer friends, and we keep each other motivated and share feedback on our stories.

8. What does your family think about your career as a published author?

My friends and family have been very supportive. My husband is proud to call me the “resident writer” in the family. Sometimes I’ll ask him for a male point of view on a scene or a character, or ask an odd gender question. He loves reading my stories and is always amazed at how I’m able to come up with such interesting characters and creative story ideas.

I share my newsletter, Kelli’s Quill with my parents, friends, and other relatives, so they’re aware of my writing. I let them decide for themselves whether they want to buy the books or not.

My father likes reading all my great reviews, and he’s read a bunch of my short stories and interviews, but I’m not sure if he’s read any of the erotic romances. My mother and brother have read my books and they like them.

9. Besides writing, what other interests do you have?

When I’m not writing, I’m usually reading, gardening, traveling, going to flea markets, or hanging out with my husband and friends. I try to balance my writing life with my “regular” life, so I’m not being anti-social and slaving away writing when I could be out enjoying the world. I like going places and seeing new things, because you never know when something will spark an idea for a story or a character. I also work a full-time job, so I’m constantly busy.

10. Can you tell us about what’s coming up next for you writing wise?

Right now I’m working on several projects. I’m in the middle of revising a historical/mystery romance and editing a romance set in the world of professional wrestling. In August 2012, my full-length historical novel, The Witch & the Warrior will be released by Medallion Press, so I’m working on that, too. I recently started a blog: KelliWilkinsauthor.blogspot.com and I post to that once a week. My newsletter, Kelli’s Quill comes out every other month. Readers can sign up on my website: www.KelliWilkins.com

Thanks for the interview! It was great sharing my thoughts. I enjoy hearing from readers and welcome questions and comments about my books.

Paranormal Romance

Switzerland and New York, the Present

The Legend:
In the long, long ago, two outwardly beautiful humans came together and mated. The woman was sure the resulting conception would produce a child as magnificent as its parents. Instead, she bore twins who were marked by imperfections. The mother immediately abandoned the boy deep in the forest and cast the girl into a stream. The two of them were saved and gifted by the gods and became the first of the Abandoned Ones, all of whom have some special gift. Both twins gathered six others like themselves. Those who are followers of the boy child are the Chosen Ones who work for the good. The followers of the girl child are the Others, servants of the Devil. This still holds true today; both groups gather recruits from among the world's Abandoned Ones. (Quoted from reviews of the first three titles in this series, STORM OF VISION, STORM OF SHADOWS, and CHAINS OF ICE.)

For centuries, every seven years, the Chosen Ones have selected seven of their number to band together in a search for abandoned children with the special marks and talents that show they are among the Chosen. The Others also look for the Abandoned Ones for their own evil purposes and almost succeeded in wiping out the Chosen a few years ago when they bombed the Gypsy Travel Agency, the Chosens' cover firm.

Samuel Faa, one of the current seven, is sent to Geneva to gain access to the Agency funds. A prime reason for choosing Samuel is his ability to control others' minds, a trait that comes in handy when dealing with the bank's president. So now, the Chosen have the means to continue their search for Abandoned Ones and to fight the Others. While in Switzerland, Samuel attends a children's literacy society fundraiser put on by the mother of fellow member of the seven, Isabelle Mason.

Samuel and Isabelle have a long history. Though both were abandoned as babies, Isabelle was adopted by the Masons, a wealthy Boston elite couple by whom she was given every advantage as though she were their own child. Samuel was given to the Mason's begrudging butler and his wife to raise. The perfect butler's main goal was to drum his "place" into Samuel's head. At one time, Samuel and Isabelle thought they belonged together, an idea that horrified their parents. Now Samuel hopes he can make amends for botching things and rekindle the old feelings.

While at the party, Samuel overhears a plot that would harm a child. Before racing to the rescue, he gathers up Isabelle. Her talent as an empathic healer might very likely be needed.

For me, CHAINS OF FIRE is the best of the series so far. While the earlier books introduced the characters and set up the story world, a good part of CHAINS OF FIRE is a straightforward tale of two people with a past together being given another opportunity. What is unique—and edge of seat thrilling—about this plot line is that Samuel and Isabelle are trapped together under tons of snow and are likely to have only a few days to live.

There is more in this novel about the other Chosen Ones and their searches for answers to several mysteries, but I was most moved by Samuel—previously the least liked among the seven—and Isabelle, whose healing is done at great cost to herself. Piquant flashbacks to their childhood's stolen moments reveal much about them. And there is one scene late in the book I will never forget. I was reading in a waiting room while my car was being serviced and had to fight to hold back tears over chapter fifty-three. Who wants to be seen crying in public? About then I began to consider awarding CHAINS OF FIRE a Perfect 10. There is one small caveat in my recommendation, however. The love scenes, while perfectly appropriate to the story and a couple in love, are very explicit and detailed. I couldn't skim through them as I usually do, because they reveal too much about the characters and their relationship.

If this review comes across as too personal, let it signify how moving I found CHAINS OF FIRE. The three earlier books are excellent reading, but CHAINS OF FIRE is marvelous. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Recipe for Love trilogy wraps with Just One Taste

First, I want to thank Patti and the gang at Romance Reviews Today for having me here, and for giving my newest culinary romance, Just One Taste, the coveted Perfect 10 rating! I may or may not have your entire review memorized.

With the release of Just One Taste, Recipe for Love readers finally get the conclusion of the Market trilogy I began with Can’t Stand the Heat and On the Steamy Side, while brand new readers are introduced to the band of misfits and renegades who make up the kitchen crew at trendy Manhattan restaurant, Market.

As a reader, I love trilogies; the way the stories connect and build, the way the characters grow and deepen—it definitely enhances the reading experience for me. As a writer, I enjoy writing trilogies because it gives me the chance to stretch subplots over several books and play with extended story arcs, and I get to revisit a world and a group of characters who are as real to me, by the third book, as most of my friends!

In Can’t Stand the Heat, we met Chef Adam Temple and his merry band of outlaws, who all had to deal with the fallout when Adam dared a snarky food critic, Miranda Wake, to spend a week in his kitchen. On the Steamy Side brought more delicious drama, as celebrity chef Devon Sparks learned how to love life and food again, with the help of his son’s sassy Southern nanny, Lilah Jane Tunkle. And Just One Taste…well, here’s the blurb from the back of the book:

He has a hungry mind.

Bad-boy chef Wes Murphy dreads his final semester cooking class—Food Chemistry 101—until he meets the new substitute teacher. Dr. Rosemary Wilkins is a feast for the eyes, though her approach to food is strictly academic. So Wes decides to rattle her Bunsen burner by asking for her hands-on advice—on aphrodisiacs . . .

She’s got love down to a science.

Rosemary is a little wary about working with Wes, whose casual flirtations leave her hot under the collar. But once they begin testing the love-enhancing power of chocolate, oysters, and strawberries, it becomes scientifically evident that the brainy science nerd and the boyish chef have some major chemistry together—and it’s delicious . . .

I know some readers hesitate to jump in when a series is already several books underway, while others love to start at the beginning and obsessively read them all in order (guilty as charged!). And some readers prefer trilogies, neatly contained in three books, to a long, sprawling epic series that can spin off forever.

What about you? Do you like connected stories, and if so, do you feel the need to start with the first book? Or do you prefer that every book stands completely alone, with no appearances by the author’s previous characters?

While my books are connected and are set in the same world, each one can absolutely be read as a complete story, in and of itself. Still, in solidarity with those of you who like to read trilogies in order, I’m offering the entire trilogy (signed, of course) to one lucky commenter!

Guest Blogger: M.A. Ellis (with a giveaway)

Hello, all!

Am I the only one who finds it hard to believe the year is officially in ‘waning’ mode? Activities and events are ramping up for yours truly. Before you know it, October will be here and that means RomantiCon! I can’t wait to see my talented peers and all the readers who make are lives worth living—and you know who you are! Then it will be Halloween and rounds of events that have the ongoing ‘paranormal’ theme. Who doesn’t love that?

I’m thrilled to announce my new release from Ellora’s Cave has my first paranormal theme. Filigree and Fantasy is a panormal erotic romance set in Macedonia—the country. Not the town in Ohio. Although, I’ve been there many times and while I find it quite nice, I doubt there are any shape-shifting canines in the city environs. You will find those in the new book.

This is the first book I’ve written where key components of the story were actually based in fact. I was blessed to have first-hand knowledge of the wonderful art of filigree jewelry making from my daughter’s dear friend and former roommate who is an extremely talented artisan. She shared her knowledge and photos and tales from her Macedonian internship. Best of all, she graciously allowed me to name my heroine, Whitney, after her.

Here’s the blurb and a link for an excerpt. And I’m diggin’ the cover, people. May I please have a pair of arms like that in real life? Please!

Until next time, I hope you enjoy,
M.A.

Filigree and Fantasy - Blurb

Whitney is ecstatic over her internship in Macedonia and the opportunity to hone her craft at the hands of a filigree master. Little does she know the old man has an ulterior motive for her presence—using her talent to save the dwindling numbers of his family’s canine shapeshifters, the Sharplanjat.

Jovan isn’t a shifter, but his sense of duty rivals that of the Sharplanjat—until his unbridled attraction to the woman who might very well hold his family’s future in her hands forces him to throw caution aside and hold her. Taste her. Drive her to the brink of exquisite passion and beyond.

Mesmerized by the virile, violet-eyed foreigner, Whitney is more than ready for a quick, steamy affair. But the extremely determined Jovan has more than several days of scorchingly wild sex in mind.

But when she finds out his family secret will she run screaming in fear or embrace the fantasy that can only be found in his protective arms?
