Friday and winding down

It's 4:00 here and I just came from one of the publisher signings. Spoke with Erin McCarthy and she is as wonderful as ever. Yesterday, Nora Roberts gave the Keynote address and she gave a funny, inspirational speech on writing and back in the days when she first started out as a writer. If anyone could look at one career, it would have to be hers. She has given back a lot to the romance novel industry.

Today, Jayne An Krentz spoke at the awards luncheon and she gave a great speech. That  is another example of a gracious, kind author. Have seen a ton of people. Authors you only hear about or read their books..,they are here.
Weather is still hot but not unbearable. Tonight is dinner out and probably hitting the bar for drinks....

Until next update...

Spotlight Review: Snow Play by Barbara Elsborg

SNOW PLAY - Barbara Elsborg
Ellora’s Cave www.ellorascave.com
ISBN: 978-1-41992-863-5
June 2010
Erotic Contemporary Romance - Short Story

Austria - Present Day

Feeling like the proverbial fifth-wheel on her ski vacation, Allie decides to let her coupled-up friends enjoy the slopes while she tours the glacier. Unfortunately ski boots do not make for good hunting, and she slides in the ice cave and knocks herself unconscious. When she wakes up (after a mild freak-out episode), she is rescued by the gorgeous Zach, who she proclaims to be not only her hero, but the god of the mountain.

Zach is sort-of hiding out at his friend’s yet-to-be-opened ice hotel while recuperating from a knee injury. Seeing an extra set of skis after the lifts have closed for the night, Zach has the feeling that someone is in danger, and goes looking. He wasn’t sure what he was expecting, but nothing could have prepared him for Allie. She’s sweet, and funny, and Zach is falling fast.

Two single people, pseudo-trapped on the top of a mountain indulge in a little SNOW PLAY. Zach’s recent bad experiences can be partially blamed on women, so he’s trying to take a break from them. Yet, Allie makes him feel things no other woman has ever made him feel, and it’s not just lust. Allie doesn’t usually indulge in flings, but for some reason she wants to indulge with Zach.

Erotic enough to melt the ice hotel they are staying in, SNOW PLAY is also filled with humor, and a thoroughly enjoyable short story.

Spotlight Review: Claiming Her Billion-Dollar Birthright by Maureen Child

CLAIMING HER BILLION-DOLLAR BIRTHRIGHT – Maureen Child
Dynasties: The Jarrods, Book 1
Silhouette Desire #2024
ISBN: 978-0-373-73037-7
July 2010
Series Romance

San Francisco, California and Aspen, Colorado – Present Day

Erica Prentice might come from a wealthy family, but she has struggled to make her place in the business world. When a lawyer from Colorado, Christian Hanford, contacts her regarding some vital information for her, she’s curious, but skeptical. Then she learns that the man who raised her is not her father, but that the late Donald Jarrod is her real father. His will has not only bequeathed her part of his estate, but stipulated that she must live in Aspen in order to claim it. Erica is shocked at the news, but curious. It doesn’t help that Christian appears convincing—and attractive. When she pays a visit to Aspen and meets her new family, she is around Christian more since he has become like a rock for her. Yet, a part of him treats her like a glass object. See and talk to her, but he won’t touch. Well, Erica wants Christian to touch her.

Christian has known the Jarrod family for a long time, going from the poor kid on the wrong side of the tracks to the man groomed to be the Jarrod family attorney. He’s grateful for everything Donald Jarrod did for him, and he’s well aware of a clause in his employee contract that forbids him from getting romantically involved with a member of the clan. But the more he’s around Erica, the harder it becomes to hide his feelings. Christian wants Erica, but she is off-limits. Can he keep his feelings under control, or will he walk away from the job he loves for the woman he loves?

CLAIMING HER BILLION-DOLLAR BIRTHRIGHT is the first book in the Dynasties: The Jarrods series and introduces readers to the Jarrod family. While this story is about Erica and Christian, there is also some focus on the rest of the Jarrod family, and Maureen Child has done a superb job weaving in each sibling’s tale. Erica and Christian get to know each other to start with; however, by mid-book, their relationship begins to heat up. It’s clear there are intense feelings between them and they have to work out the differences to find their middle ground and happiness.

Erica’s mother died at childbirth and her presumed father and brothers never seemed to understand her. She’s strived to be like them, only to be pushed aside and treated as a child again and again. With the opportunity to not only take on a new job in Aspen but start a new life, she should be too busy to be looking for a relationship. But Christian catches her eye and she can’t help but fall for him. He’s kind and generous, even as he keeps her at arm’s length.

Christian had an instantaneous attraction for Erica, but to act upon it would be detrimental to his career. He’s not selfish, but logical, since he also supports his mother. Besides, he feels as though he owes the Jarrod family his loyalty. Would he give it all up for Erica? As he tussles with his decision, readers will be holding their breath, hoping things can work out for this endearing couple.

Having never visited Aspen, but after reading CLAIMING HER BILLION-DOLLAR BIRTHRIGHT, I’m ready to take the next plane out, especially if Christian, Erica, and the rest of the Jarrod family is there to greet me. A warm, feel-good tale that is filled with emotion and what-will-they- decide moments made this hard to put down. Don’t miss out on your copy of CLAIMING HER BILLION-DOLLAR BIRTHRIGHT.

Ask a question and enter to win a $25 gift card!

I will be having Carly Phillips later on as a guest on this blog and I thought for fun that I would ask her to answer your questions. Carly's newest release is KISS ME IF YOU CAN and will be released July 27th.

Here's a brief blurb:

Sam Cooper ("Coop") has just become the most eligible bachelor in New York City. Now that he has foiled a jewelry-store robbery and has been rewarded with the ring of his choice, single women all over the city are fawning over the crime reporter. But Coop isn't interested in the admirers sending racy underwear his way. His attention is centered solely on Lexie Davis, the only woman in the city who claims not to be interested in his bachelor status.
Instead, free-spirited Lexie is interested in Coop's antique ring, and its—potentially scandalous—history in her family. But Coop is quickly becoming more than just her route to the ring. When his investigation starts to uncover the truth, will she trust her heart—and her family secrets—to this most eligible bachelor?

You can learn more by visiting Carly's website at http://www.carlyphillips.com/

Now, for the contest...

Get your thinking cap on and think of what question you would want to ask Carly. The rules are that you can only enter a maximum of three times the whole contest. Out of the questions asked, I will choose ten for Carly to answer and send them to her PR person. But even if your question is not one of those picked, you're still in the running for the prize: A $25 gift card from your choice of Amazon, BN, Fictionwise or Walmart. You can buy Carly's new one and the one coming out in September, LOVE ME IF YOU DARE.

Contest ends Midnight EST on 8/1/10 and a winner will be announced a day or two later.

Romantic Comedy

Plainview, in the Midwest – Present Day

Andrea and Angela Wolkowicz are twins. Andrea, or Andi, has come home from Chicago where she was a marketing executive for a huge charitable organization. Business has always been her strong suit. In high school, they called her a geek, and she never once had a date. As soon as she graduated, she was on her way to college, as far away from Plainview as she could get. Angela, or Jelly, was less fortunate. Jelly has been brain damaged since birth. Even though professionals encouraged Walt and Ella Wolkowicz to put her in a home, they refused. Instead, they kept Jelly at home and raised her the best they knew how. Jelly does just fine now, she can’t read or write, but she has an amazing grasp on many things in life. And when Ella passed away several months ago, Andi quit her job and moved home to help her father take care of Jelly.

It has been a very long eight months, and Andi is still nowhere near finding a job now than she was when she arrived back in town. Today, her interview at Guthrie’s grocery store ended badly. The woman who took her resume barely gave Andi the time of day; she just insisted that Andi was not right for the position, when in fact, Andi could run rings around the Guthrie job. As Andi digs in her purse for bus fare and finds no loose change, she stops in front of her father’s old car wash, located right next door to Guthrie’s. She used to work here with her father when she was a teenager; now the old business is boarded up and empty. The Senior Guthrie, Hank, bought the property a couple years ago, and Andi wonders why he’s let it stay boarded up and deserted.

THE BIKINI CAR WASH opens up after lots of hassle and struggle between Andi and the town council, namely Hank Guthrie. Andi learned that her father still owns the property, and she needs a job, so why not reopen the car wash? Only Andi has a plan that the good people of Plainview will certainly object to. Her workers are all women and they won’t be wearing short shorts while they wash those cars; nope, it’s bikinis all the way.

Pete Guthrie is one of the boys who used to tease Andi back in high school, but Pete is all grown up now and he runs Guthrie’s grocery. His father, Hank, isn’t happy about Andi and her bikini-clad women and he plans to shut her down. Pete, however, is determined to help Andi succeed, and what follows is lots of fun as the town takes sides in the battle of the conservatives against Andi and her new venture.

Lot of secondary characters are in this story. Andi’s sister Jelly and her father Walt are her biggest supporters, along with her employees, Cher-L and Tiff. There are lots of laughs, a little bit of fun, and even a bit of mystery when THE BIKINI CAR WASH opens right on Main Street in Plainview. As in all small towns, people talk and point fingers, but it’s a whopping adventure as we watch Andi fight for free enterprise. And Pete? Well, he found a tiny pair of binoculars that he can use to watch Andi while she's down there working in her business suit...

Spolight Review: Twice Tempted by a Rogue by Tessa Dare

TWICE TEMPTED BY A ROGUE - Tessa Dare
Ballantine Books
ISBN: 978-0-345-51887-3
July 2010
Historical Romance

Buckleigh-in-the-Moor, Devonshire, England - Nineteenth Century

Rhys St. Maur, the new Lord Ashworth, isn’t sure how he survived the war, but here he is back where he grew up, where the awful memories lie, and where Meredith Lane lives. As a member of a private gentlemen’s society known as the Stud Club, Rhys has also just discovered that a fellow member has been brutally murdered. Bone tired and unsure of what the future will bring, Rhys steps into the Three Hounds Inn and back into the lives of the villagers who are not so happy to see him. Even Meredith seems shocked and, although now a widow, doesn’t seem to believe he’s back for good. It seems he has a lot to make up for after his late father’s desertion.

Meredith Maddox, nee Lane, is stunned when Rhys appears in her inn. For fourteen years, she’s kept track of his war escapades and dreamed of seeing him again. Since the devastating fire at his family estate that permanently injured her father and changed the lives of the villagers, Meredith has wondered if she’d ever set eyes on Rhys again. And here he is, big as life, and announcing to the room that he’s going to rebuild his family home and settle back in their lives. Oh, and marry Meredith. Meredith scoffs at both of these pronouncements. She has struggled for years to make the inn a comfortable stop for the coaches that rumble through on the main road, and her plans will not be shaken by Rhys’s sudden arrival. Or will they?

Hot on the heels of Rhys is fellow Stud Club member Julian Bellamy, who brings a young prostitute with him who witnessed their friend’s murder. He wants to keep her safe and hopes to enlist Rhys in helping find the murderers. Meredith kindly gives Cora a job at the inn as she tries to stifle her feelings for Rhys who has begun to try to wear her down with his constant talk of marriage. But Meredith has something to hide about her relationship with another man, and she is going to have to be stronger than Rhys. Somehow.

TWICE TEMPTED BY A ROGUE is a poignant story of two people with a long ago connection and the inability to forget things in their past. Rhys feels the deaths of every one of his men who perished on the battlefield, and cannot fathom how he is still alive and they are dead. When he sees Meredith for the first time in years, he is instantly aware of his need for her. Meredith, on the other hand, lives for her inn, and for years, has only thought of Rhys while in the arms of other men who were temporary escapes. How can these two heartsick souls overcome their secrets?

An excellent cast of secondary characters, a mystery, and more than a few surprises make TWICE TEMPTED BY A ROGUE a super summer read. I look forward to Julian’s tale next, THREE NIGHTS WITH A SCOUNDREL.

Spotlight Review: Almost Perfect by Susan Mallery

ALMOST PERFECT – Susan Mallery
A Fool’s Gold Romance, Book 2
HQN
ISBN: 978-0-373-77490-6
July 2010
Contemporary Romance

Fool’s Gold, California – Present Day

Best-selling author Liz Sutton grew up in Fool’s Gold on the wrong side of the tracks, but it didn’t stop her from loving Ethan Hendrix. However, their secret relationship soured when he publicly rejected her in front of friends. Humiliated, she left town to start a new life. Liz soon learned she was pregnant and two attempts to try to tell Ethan failed. Now, more than ten years later, she’s returned to town to claim her two nieces, who are parentless. First order of business is to finally inform Ethan that he is a father. She didn’t entirely expect his reaction, one of outrage that she kept his son from him, or that long buried emotional feelings for him would surface again.

Ethan’s the oldest of his siblings and the rock that runs the family business since his father’s death. When Liz comes back to town, he immediately spots her and makes contact with her, only to learn to his shock that she had his son. Angry, Ethan lashes out at Liz, while fearing that the son he just found will be taken away from him once more. But old feelings haven’t died, and he’s caught between hating her and wanting to make love to her. She makes it clear she still doesn’t trust him to not hurt her—or their son.

Meanwhile, Liz meets the nieces she never knew she had and adjusts to taking over their guardianship since her brother will be in prison for a long time and their mother is dead. Suddenly she’s the head of a family of three kids, while trying to keep Ethan from demanding she remain in town.

An emotional journey of rekindling love and finding a new life in a town she thought she’d left behind is in store for Liz in ALMOST PERFECT. Her childhood was raucous, with a drunken mother and being teased by classmates, but a shining light had been her love for Ethan. When he shattered that love, she did the only thing she could do, run away. A child conceived out of that love hadn’t been expected, but now she can’t imagine a life without her son Tyler. Liz didn’t waste much time telling Ethan he had a son once she was back in Fool’s Gold; however, that doesn’t matter to the man. Even as she defends her reasons, she can’t help but feel the attraction that still lies between them. But to get involved again would be a mistake.

Ethan once had a promising cycling career, but gave that up when he was injured and then his father passed away. As an honorable person, he would have married Liz if he’d known she was pregnant, and the fact she didn’t tell him leaves a black mark against her in his eyes. The information that she will be returning to San Francisco with their son once her business in Fool’s Gold is finished has him seeing red. He strikes out, suing her for custody. The judge orders them to remain in town for the summer and work out a deal. Can they, or have they reached the point of no return?

Chemistry burns hotly between Liz and Ethan in ALMOST PERFECT. The main focus is about learning to trust each other and building on the emotional connection that still burns, and melding together a family. Susan Mallery has penned a charming tale with ALMOST PERFECT that I found hard to put down, and I can’t wait to return to Fool’s Gold for more.

But how can she distract the brute from consummating their marriage until morning when she plans to steal away from the keep and return to the convent?

Lord Roland is very pleased with his bride. Besides the lands and fine castle she brings, she's pleasing to the eye and has a suitably demure demeanor. The only thorn in the ointment is he has no experience tupping a gentlewoman. Bedding his modest bride will prove a true test of this knight's steel!

Lyrael's Sacrifice By Jory Strong
Lyrael's blonde hair and blue eyes mark her as Azzura, one those raised to be given to the Djinn. When she dreams of a panther that shifts into a bird before changing into a serpent, she knows she will be the next Azzura sacrificed.

Whether she lives or dies will depend on her courage, her determination. And her trust in Asrafil, the Djinn prince who introduces her to carnal pleasure and will name her the wife of his heart, his flesh, his spirit—if she passes the tests necessary to enter the city of the Djinn.

A Perfect 10: TEMPTED BY A WARRIOR by Amanda Scott

TEMPTED BY A WARRIOR - Amanda Scott
A Perfect 10
Grand Central's Forever
ISBN: 978-0-446-56132-7
July 2010
Historical Romance

Annandale, Scotland, near the Border; Summer of 1377

Two years ago, the former Lady Fiona Dunwythie eloped with handsome Will Jardine, of whom her father disapproved. (It's so tempting to drop a few clichés here, e.g., Marry in haste, repent at leisure. Handsome is as handsome does. Never were they more true.) Will turned out to be a bully and a mean drunk. His father, Old Jardine, is no better, though bedridden. But now, after giving his wife a sound beating that could have imperiled the child she carries, Will has disappeared; some fear he's dead somewhere. Could Fiona be blamed for hoping?

Old Jardine has a sister whose son is Sir Richard Seyton, knight, baron and laird of Kirkhill. Richard receives a message from Old Jardine summoning him to his deathbed as heir to his estates. When Richard arrives, things are not as purported. Will has only been gone a fortnight, and he leaves a wife and child on the way to inherit. With troubles stirring on both sides of the border, however, Richard agrees to find out what has happened to Will and, meanwhile, to act as Fiona and the babe's guardian. His uncle makes no bones about wanting only a male with Jardine blood to inherit. He has no use for his daughter-in-law (whom he suspects may have killed his son) or any female grandchild who might survive.

Fiona is understandably wary of trusting another man, but she dares to be impertinent to Kirkhill and gets away with it. Even though he seems to her to be a true gentleman, unlike her husband, she dislikes being under his thumb. As Old Jardine seems to have a ways to go before entering death's door, Richard heads for home to prepare for his absence once the old man dies; he stops at Fiona's old home at Dunwythie along the way to learn what he can. Once home, he finds his troublesome young sister testing her womanly wings and giving his old friend Tony, Sir Anthony MacCairill, a hard time. He also finds his uncle, Sir James Seyton, with news. Ambitious Scots and English have chosen now to foment trouble along the nearby border. He and Richard must be ready to join the Douglas forces headed by Archie the Grim (an actual person in Scottish history).

As June gives way to July, Old Jardine dies, Fiona begins a long labor, and Richard returns, this time with some of his men at arms.

Whew! So much goes on in TEMPTED BY A WARRIOR that I'm finding it difficult to briefly summarize, so I won't attempt any more of it. That's not because the plot is hard to follow, just the opposite. Ms. Scott writes with intelligence and clarity. Her books feed the mind as well as stir the emotions, and her characters breathe life. Fiona and Richard establish a prickly relationship made more so by the forbidden attraction they both feel. The large cast of supporting characters—her extended family and his, their friends, the various servants and retainers, and several persons out of history—all add to the interest and action of this rich novel and, in fact, the whole series.

This series began with TAMED BY A LAIRD and continued with SEDUCED BY A ROGUE. While reading pleasure would be enhanced by reading these titles in order, TEMPTED BY A WARRIOR can very well stand alone. It's a masterful blend of historical authenticity, exciting action, and people's personal stories. It definitely merits a Perfect 10 rating.

A Perfect 10: BARELY A LADY by Eileen Dreyer

BARELY A LADY – Eileen Dreyer
Drake’s Rakes, Book 1
A Perfect 10
Grand Central's Forever
ISBN: 978-0-446-54208-1
July 2010
Historical Romance

Charleroi and Brussels, Belgium – 1815

Olivia Grace is a chaperone in the crowded ballroom; while the ball commences, the men in the field nearby are preparing for the battle of Quatre Bras, Waterloo. Olivia meets Lady Kate, the Dowager Duchess of Murther, and her friend, Grace Fairchild. When the canons roar, people begin to evacuate back to England, and Olivia is left behind. She finds herself harassed by her ex-husband’s cousin Gervaise, a man she abhors, but one who is determined to have her. Lady Kate saves the day when she hires Olivia to be her companion. Olivia is sure that if Lady Kate knew who she really was, she would be ostracized, but she dare not reveal her past until she can safely get away from Gervaise. Grace asks Olivia to accompany her through the battlefield to look for her father; she has not heard from him since the battle began. They set out through the melee in a carriage seeing death and destruction everywhere.

On the battlefield, Olivia is shocked when she finds her ex-husband, Jack Wyndham, an English earl, in a French uniform. He is badly injured. They had a short eleven-month marriage and have been separated for five years. Even with what he put her through, she has to save him. After putting an English uniform on him, she takes him and a few other wounded men to Lady Kate’s home where a doctor is caring for the soldiers.

A few days later, Jack finally awakens and is happy to see Olivia, his Livvie. He remembers nothing of the last five years and nothing about what happened when he divorced her. In the meantime, two men are looking over the battlefield to find Jack Wyndham. One of them is called the Surgeon, but should have been called the Butcher. He knows that he may need his skills when he finds Jack. Is the other gentleman Jack’s cousin Gervaise? Will Olivia be able to keep Jack safe when she is barely hanging on?

Eileen Dreyer is a talented author who has written books in many different genres, including suspense, fantasy, and contemporary under the pseudonym of Kathleen Korbel. BARELY A LADY is her first historical in the Regency period, and she handles it beautifully. This woman can write anything and readers will want to read it. BARELY A LADY is a terrific romance with suspense and adventure. It is a meaty story which will leave readers gasping for more. Luckily, this story is the first of a trilogy.

Olivia is a wonderful heroine who had to handle the ostracism from her family, not to mention the unhappiness she experienced from her husband and trying to save her child. Jack is a hero who believed the wrong people and condemned his wife when he should have believed in her integrity. Is he a traitor or an honorable man? Secondary character Lady Kate is an intriguing woman who suffered through her own problems and rises above it; Gervaise is a despicable character always wanting what Jack has and willing to do whatever it takes to get it.

Readers will be turning the pages of BARELY A LADY and begging for more. Wonderfully written with excellent dialogue, plotting, and with delicious characters, it is an excellent tale that you won’t want to miss, worthy of an RRT Perfect 10.

Guest Blog: Tessa Adams asks 'Why are Shapeshifters So Sexy?'

When my editor first approached me about writing a paranormal series, I spent a lot of time thinking about kind of series I wanted to write. Did I want to do vampires, who are admittedly very sexy but at the same time have so many different series out that I wasn’t sure I could come up with an original idea? Did I want to do witches, who I love to read about or did I want to have the series be connected through my heroes instead of my heroines? Did I want to do fairies or immortal warriors or psychics? The list went on and on, but even as I considered each choice (all of which I really love reading) a part of me knew that I was going to write about shifters all along. There’s just something about them—the ability to change form, all that animal magnetism, all that heat and sexiness and darkness—that I just can’t resist, as a reader or a writer.

And that’s when my new series idea, Dragon’s Heat, was born—a group of dragon shifters who live in the caves of the modern day New Mexico desert. Struggling to keep themselves hidden despite their war with another clan and a disease ravaging their people, my shifters are searching for their place in a world that doesn’t believe in dragons. Tall, dark, tortured and sexy as all get out, it’s been a joy to write the first two books in the series and I’m looking forward to writing the third in the next couple of months.

But what is it about shifters that is so sexy? What is it about them that appeals to me so much? Is it the fact that most of them have dark, tortured pasts? Probably, as I love to put my characters through the wringer. Or maybe it’s the fact that they’re always walking a fine line between being in control and out of control. All that heat and passion and emotion right on the brink of exploding always gets to me. Whether I’m reading Nalini Singh’s Psy/Changeling series or Patricia Briggs’s Mercy series, I’m always sucked into the angst and struggle and search for identity that most shifters must go through.

So what do you think? What is your favorite type of paranormal creature to read about (if you like paranormal creatures, that is)? And if that type happens to be shifters, what is it about them that you find so irresistible? Since I’m anxiously awaiting the release of Dark Embers, my first Dragon’s Heat novel which hits shelves on Tuesday, I thought I’d give away a copy here. So leave a comment to be entered in the contest.

A TALE OF TWO DEMON SLAYERS by Angie Fox

Out now!

Blurb:

In the ultimate showdown for survival, may the best demon slayer win.

Last month, I was a single preschool teacher whose greatest thrill consisted of color-coding my lesson plans. That was before I learned I was a slayer. Now, it’s up to me to face curse-hurling imps, vengeful demons, and any other supernatural uglies that crop up. And, to top it off, a hunk of a shape-shifting griffin has invited me to Greece to meet his family.

But it’s not all sun, sand, and ouzo. Someone has created a dark-magic version of me with my powers and my knowledge—and it wants to kill me and everyone I know. Of course, this evil twin doesn’t have Grandma’s gang of biker witches, a talking Jack Russell terrier, or an eccentric necromancer on its side. In the ultimate showdown for survival, may the best demon slayer win.
