Q&A with Emery Lee!!!

Emery Lee, author of THE HIGHEST STAKES, answers questions for us today. Give her a big, warm welcome and say hi!

1. Tell us about your newest release.

The HIGHEST STAKES is an epic novel of thwarted love, ambition, deceit, betrayal, adultery, murder… and horseracing! The tale is set in mid-18th century England and Colonial Virginia, a time of high stakes gaming horseracing, when the thoroughbred as we know it today first emerged from the stables of the rich and powerful.

2. When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

Writing is something I have dreamed of all of my life, but never would have imagined actually doing. I have always had a decent command of the written word in a technical sense, but never believed that I possessed the imagination for creative writing. I took my first stab at writing a Romance back in 1986 but I never got beyond the first page!

I just never had a story until THE HIGHEST STAKES literally entered my dreams.

3. Where do you get your information or ideas for your stories?

THE HIGHEST STAKES was born out of my love for history and horses. My original premise for the novel was a pre-revolutionary drama/romance set in Colonial Virginia and the Carolinas in which the main characters were horse breeders. I read at least a dozen history books and spent hundreds of hours in research until I felt ready to write. I began the novel with a prologue set one generation earlier than my actual story. My intent was only to provide background for the characters and the horses, but these first figments of my imagination came to life in such a powerful way that they stole the story!

4. What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?

I don’t know if the same goes for most writers, but I have almost no command of my creativity. It, rather, commands me!

It is despairing at times to sit for hours staring at the computer screen while under a deadline, with my mind blank as a slate, only to awaken hours later in the middle of the night with all the thoughts and ideas that I couldn’t conjure up at a more reasonable hour!

I also never write without Bach or Handel setting my mood. Since I concentrate on the Georgian era, I only listen to baroque music. I never tire of it.

When engrossed in my story, I experience a state of utter timelessness, hours and hours passing like mere minutes.

5. What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your books?

That I can write! (I pray no reviewers will gainsay me on that declaration!)

6. What authors or friends influenced you in helping you become a writer?

I am ever thankful for the support of my fellow members of Georgia Romance Writers, author Diane Gaston, and my agent Kelly Mortimer, but I never would have even begun writing had it not been for my friend Diana Maynard.

September of 2007 while were riding the Rocky Gap horse trails, I first mentioned this crazy idea of writing a novel. Like the Nike ad, Diana said, “Just do it!” A week later, and coincidentally on my birthday, I found a package from Diana at my front door. It was a book on writing. I began that very weekend, completing my first draft fourteen months later.

While struggling to write, I received unfailing support from my husband and two sons, but once finished, I asked the most critical person I know, my sister Michelle, to be the first to read the manuscript. She was under extreme duress at the time, with no escape from the airplane cruising at 30,000 feet, but one chapter after giving me the death glare, she was irrevocably hooked.

7. What does your family think about your career as a published author?

My husband has been incredibly supportive of my every endeavor during our twenty- seven years together, but was certainly taken aback with the news of my novel's acceptance by Sourcebooks in January 2009.

My eldest son Sean tells me it’s a best seller! (The faith of a mustard seed…)

8. Can you tell us about what’s coming up next for you writing wise?

I am completely enthralled with the yet unwritten history of Philip and Sukey, two secondary characters that could have easily stolen the show. I hope that readers of the HIGHEST STAKES will agree, and their tale will be told.

Beyond that, I would like to continue the colonial equestrian theme and end the saga with my original book idea; otherwise, Ian Drake and Madeleine Roberts will only live to haunt my dreams!

A Perfect 10: Shalador's Lady by Anne Bishop

SHALADOR'S LADY - Anne Bishop
A Perfect 10
A Black Jewels Novel
Roc (Hardcover)
ISBN: 978-0-451-46315-9
March 2010
Fantasy Romance

Dena Nehele

In QUEEN OF THE DARKNESS, Janelle destroyed the corrupt and horribly evil queens and their warlord princes who had ruled the realms with a storm of power. She barely survived, but now lives in Kaeleer, the Shadow Realm, with her husband and consort, the Warlord Prince Daemon. Throughout the realms, all those with magic are of the Blood; those who wear jewels have the greatest power, and the darker the jewel, the greater the power. Jeweled Warlord Princes and Queens rule the other Blood and the landen, or non-Blood.

The territory of Dena Nehel and the Shalador reserves located within this territory suffered from malevolent queens before the witch storm. No Blood females remain who are capable of becoming queen. In SHADOW QUEEN, Theran, the last Prince of Grayhaven, asked Janelle for a queen. She gave him Lady Cassidy for one year. Cassidy is a Rose Jeweled Queen, tall, plain, hard working, and far from aristocratic. She came to Dena Nehele and Grayhaven Manor to serve a territory where the laden hate and distrust the Blood as much as the Blood distrust the queens and to a land nearly as broken and ruined as its people. She set to work and accomplished what only a good heart and caring soul could, but she had her demons, too. In her first court, her Warlords rejected her for a prettier queen.

While Theran became First Escort in Cassidy's court, and one of the twelve Warlords in Cassidy's First Circle, he cannot accept her as Dena Nehele's Queen. When Lady Kermilla comes to Grayhaven to ask Cassidy for money, he meets the queen he is destined to serve. He is blind to her selfish greed, a trait that started the old queens down a road of ruinous corruption.

When Cassidy discovers the queen who took her court away from her once is welcomed in Dena Nehel, she fears her current court will desert her, so she flees. What she cannot imagine is that the rest of her First Circle will remain loyal and follow her. A schism between present queen and future queen soon begins to rip Dena Nehel apart, and it seems nothing can save the realm from more bloodshed.

This long introduction is necessary, for if you haven't read the Black Jewels novels, you will be confused by the story. However, the Black Jewel novels are seductive—once you start, you just cannot stop reading. There is the specter of battle and bloodshed, but threatened war is not all that drives the tension. Cassidy's plight, with the needs of Dena Nehele and its people and with the desperation of the Warlord Princes, will keep you on tenterhooks. SHALADOR'S LADY takes you on an emotional journey of dread and hope involved in an uncertain recovery. Characters from previous novels play important secondary roles, and Sceltie (pronounced 'sheltie'), Kindred dogs who also wear jewels of power, add humor while herding their people in the right direction. You must read this fantasy novel, but read a few of the other Black Jewel novels first so you can glean the greatest pleasure. Even given this small drawback, SHALADOR'S LADY still earns a Perfect 10.

Spotlight Review: Stolen Promise by Lisa Marie Wilkinson

STOLEN PROMISE - Lisa Marie Wilkinson
Medallion Press
ISBN: 978-1-60-542069-1
March 2010
Historical Romance

England and South Carolina - 1806

Jade has run away before and she will do so again if forced to marry the abusive Dimitri. A Gypsy woman has no choice but to obey the laws of her people. Now her father has told her of another tribe who has offered for Jade’s hand for a half-Gypsy grandson of the tribe‘s leader who will protect her from Dimitri. Before the families can make it official, though, Jade, with the help of her younger sister, Liberina, escapes the Gypsy camp and heads straight into trouble.

Evan Dark, half-Gypsy and an American plantation owner, is trying to get aboard ship to return to South Carolina when he encounters, and rescues, a beautiful Gypsy woman. Despite her wildness, Evan is intrigued and enchanted, but the only way for both of them and her sister to escape England safely is to work out a plan. Jade agrees to be Evan’s indentured servant in exchange for her sister’s passage. But can Evan keep his personal feelings separate from his new servant as they set sail for his home? How will his fiancée in South Carolina react to Jade’s arrival? And will Dimitri give up Jade so easily?

Although Jade and her sister are treated well at Evan’s plantation, her presence in his life has strained the relationship he has with his intended, Gloriana. Evan is torn between his obligation to Gloriana and his need for Jade. Outside influences, family involvement, and life in general complicate the future for both Evan and Jade.

STOLEN PROMISE has an interesting premise and two very engaging lead players. Jade tends to let her emotions rule her actions, but her yearning for a normal life keeps her going. Evan’s Gypsy side occasionally surfaces as he deals with the complications of life back in South Carolina and a not so loving fiancée. Secondary characters are extremely vital to the plot, and there is an exciting, although somewhat predictable, ending.

Plenty of adventure, some steamy interaction between Jade and Evan, and a glance into early plantation life in the United States make STOLEN PROMISE excellent entertainment.

Spotlight Review: NAKED EDGE by Pamela Clare

NAKED EDGE – Pamela Clare
I-Team Series, Book 4
Berkley Sensation
ISBN: 978-0-425-21976-8
March 2010
Romantic Suspense

Denver, Colorado – Present Day

Gabriel Rossiter works as a Boulder Mountain Parks Ranger and is living his life on the edge. He loves mountain climbing, the higher the mountain, and the harder and more risky the better. Three years ago his fiancée, Jill, died, and Gabe hasn’t been the same since. He has sex with indiscriminate women and leaves, never forging any kind of relationship; he’s only in it for the sex. One night Gabe is sent to a rockslide at Eldorado State Park where a woman fell during a rockslide. Against all odds, Gabe finds the woman dragging a broken ankle behind her as she tries to crawl to safety. Gabe learns Katherine James is a Dine’, or Navajo, and he’s astounded by her courage and strength. Three months later, Gabe is called to a sweat lodge inipi ceremony where he sees a woman dragged out of the lodge by her hair by a police officer. The Boulder Mountain Parks has jurisdiction at Mesa Butte, not the police, and when Gabe finds out the woman is Katherine, he jumps into action as other Navajo are forced out of the lodge. Grandpa Red Crow is the leader of the ceremony, and the Mesa is sacred Navajo land where they have Federal permission to perform their religious rituals.

Katherine was born to a Navajo mother and a white father, with whom her mother had an affair. She was never accepted by the rest of her family, and only her grandmother taught her the Navajo way. Kat moved from her reservation and is a reporter and member of the Denver Independent’s Investigative team (I-team). Grandpa Red Crow accepted her into Denver and was a beloved mentor and teacher for her of her heritage. When Kat tries to investigate why the police came to the sweat lodge to interrupt the group of Navajo’s weekly service she starts something that will start murder and torture before it ends.

Gabe is fascinated by Kat, but when he asks her out and she tells him she’s saving herself for a man who will love her and their children, he is immediately put off. He gets it and gets out, and he sees no reason to change that scenario even though Kat is definitely a woman different from any he’s ever met. After Grandpa Red Crow dies falling off Mesa Butte, or is murdered, Kat has several attempts on her life, and when Gabe gets fired, he assigns himself to be her bodyguard. But we all know what forced togetherness does; can Kat keep her vow to remain a virgin? Gabe will fascinate us as he tries to control himself and let Kat remain a virgin, too, despite what he really wants to do. Let’s hope they have more strength together than apart.

Pamela Clare has penned a story straight from the pages of today’s news. What I found fascinating was how the newspaper’s investigation is so important to the story, now that many newspapers are going under. The newspaper can obtain state records and go over them, take the time to inform the public for more than a two-minute sound bite as on television, and performs a necessary public service. Written from Gabe’s and Kat’s points of view, they are both wounded people: Kat by her upbringing and treatment by her family, and Gabe by the death of his fiancée. I guarantee by the end of the book your eyes will be tearing up over the emotions and love for the earth and her heritage that Kat will engender in you.

Secondary characters are Grandpa Red Crow and Kat’s co-workers, including some friends who know more about how to protect her from death threats. Sgt. Frank Daniels keeps up his goal of hurting the Navajos, and there’s Gabe’s boss, Chief Ranger Webb, trying to keep the peace between them, and other Navajos trying to live their quiet lives without disruption from the authorities.

NAKED EDGE is a different kind of story with emotion, Navajo heritage, and evil men trying to kill Kat—why, I’ll leave it to you to find out. I have talked to a Navajo I know and the story is culturally correct and will grip your senses. The I-Team Series includes EXTREME EXPOSURE (2005), HARD EVIDENCE (2006), UNLAWFUL CONDUCT (2008), and features stories about some of the other members of the I-Team that help Gabe and Kat. You’ll love this series and enjoy an afternoon immersing yourself in a culture that is fascinating.

Q&A with Jill Shure!!!

1. Tell us about your newest release.

The novel is called NIGHT GLITTER and it’s a sequel to my novel NIGHT JAZZ, a Ben Franklin Winner. The first novel begins in 1929, when my main character Jeri Devlin, a modern young woman accidentally goes back in time to the first day of the stock market crash of 1929. There she falls in love with Lex Rose. In NIGHT GLITTER her story continues. By now, it’s the Great Depression and she and Lex are facing challenges in their relationship as well as the times. So Lex has serious health issues and ends up in a sanitarium for long term care. On top of this, Jeri discovers they’re broke. In order to pay for Lex’s care, she heads to California hoping to find work in the movies which is much harder than it looks. She ends up fighting to sidestep some of the less savory things girls of the times did in order to survive.

I also finished a companion cocktail recipe book called NIGHT CAPS, which uses excerpts from both novels and uses drinks from the past and present to represent the characters in the novels.

2. Can you tell us a little about your favorite scene in the story?

It’s hard to choose just one! I have two sad ones. One when Jeri and Lex’s friend and employee Harris take Lex up to the sanitarium and have to leave him there. And the other when Jeri and Harris part at the old Pennsylvania station in New York before Jeri heads out along to California.
And I have two favorite funny scenes with a character named Lupe Cardona known as the Guadalajara Spitfire. One when she’s meeting her lover at a grungy bungalow colony at the beach. And the other is when she breaks into a producer’s office and makes all sorts of hilarious threats.

3. When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

I wrote stories as a child. My mother was very encouraging about it and hoped I’d become a writer.

4. Where do you get your information or ideas for your stories?

Everywhere. The ideas come in the shower, while driving, you name it. I have no shortages of ideas. I just don’t have the time to write them all.

5. What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?

I love going out to coffee shops to write, a popular thing to do these days. Writer Natalie Goldberg suggested this in one of her books years ago, and I found it really works for me. No interruptions, a certain amount of background noise, and the company of strangers.

6. What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your books?

How inspiring the process is. And sometimes there’s a moment when the writing flows so well and I know I’ve written something which pleases me and I know will please my readers. That’s always a great experience.

7. What authors or friends influenced you in helping you become a writer?

Herman Wouk, for starters. His MARJORIE MORNINGSTAR is still my favorite novel. I also love funny books so naturally I’m crazy about Janet Evanovitch, and Donald Westlake. In the historical vein, I adore Anne Perry and Fiona Buckley for their historical mysteries.

8. What does your family think about your career as a published author?

They’re all very excited and proud. My friends, too. They’ve become fans.

9. Besides writing, what other interests do you have?

I love to paint, read, see movies, travel, and play with my three long-haired dachshunds and my cats, namded Izzy, Roxie, Lucia, Elwood and Abigail van Puss Puss.

10. Can you tell us about what’s coming up next for you writing wise?

There may be a third book in the “Night” series which will move forward in time. Otherwise, I’m writing a really funny mystery series that I’m very excited about starting with the novel, A CLAUSE FOR MURDER.

Q&A with M.A. Ellis!!!

Please give a welcome to author M.A. Ellis! She'll tell us about her latest release, a little about herself and a peek into her future.

1. Tell us about your newest release.

NOT QUITE VANILLA is a sweet little tale of light bondage….and chocolate! I was finally able to blend a headstrong heroine with a man who realizes he’s been given the golden nugget of information that will allow him to break through her defenses. In this case, it’s learning that she’s has a secret yearning to be submissive in the bedroom.

2. Can you tell us a little about your favorite scene in the story?

It takes place in the hero’s gourmet kitchen with the heroine on her knees, handcuffed to the hanging pot rack while he does all sorts of torturously erotic things to her. Warning all….don’t try this at home unless all cooking vessels have been removed from the rack. I will not be held responsible for injuries resulting from flying All-Clad when the rack starts a rockin’.

3. When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

I’ve always loved reading, so I think it was always in the back of my mind, especially when I migrated from Miss Marple and Sherlock Holmes into the romance genre. I would say the real bug hit in 1987. I wrote a historical romance…a long one…when my twins were two years old. It took a year and I subbed it to New York and got a very lovely four page hand-written rejection letter. At the time, I just couldn’t revise a 100,000 word story, juggle temper tantrums and watch ongoing episodes of the Ninja Turtles. I filed it away and forgotten until I went back to college in 1998 and started taking writing classes. I had a great professor who was very encouraging. In fact, it was an erotic poem I wrote for my portfolio that put me on the path toward writing hotter romance.

4. Where do you get your information or ideas for your stories?

As for character traits-- I moved a lot as a corporate wife and met hundreds of people in different locales. Each little corner of the country has its own specific originality and I draw on that. Livelihoods--I usually pick ones that I would have loved as a vocation: baker, pastry chef, airbrush artist, bartender….a lot around food and beverage, apparently. I have a sequel I want to do with a secondary character who is a tattoo artist. And I just finished one with a jewelry designer. Information-- I’m forever cutting out articles and putting them in my ‘magical binder’ as my daughter calls it. There’s tons of stuff in there I’ll probably never use…but sometimes one little tidbit of random trivia is all it takes for a full story.

5. What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?

I practice, a loud, possible character dialogue quite frequently. I know immediately if it sounds stupid just by the cadence. More than a few family members have walked in on me doing that. I figure as long as I don’t have a crazed look in my eye, no one will speed dial an intervention team.

6. What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your books?

That I write really strong male point of view. I get a lot of feedback about that fact. Someone asked if I grew up surrounded by brothers since my “Hot Hendersons” series at Ellora’s Cave is comprised of six gorgeous siblings who love to verbally spar. I only have one brother. But I contribute the ability to write authentic manliness to the fact I’m a big sports fan and have many guy friends…and I actually listen when they’re ‘bro-ing’ it up. It’s educational, to say the least.

7. What authors or friends influenced you in helping you become a writer?

I belonged to RWA until recently and those chapters are so beneficial for aspiring writers. And I’ve mentioned that university professor who challenged us to write something different for our final portfolio. He made the dream seem as if it could become a reality. But the ultimate influence was my former husband who encouraged me to pursue the dream…to get out there and not be afraid to start writing again.

8. What does your family think about your career as a published author?

My ex, to this day, continues to promote my work to all and any, which is truly touching since when he urged me to ‘write’ he didn’t realize I was going to try my hand at erotic romance. He was a bit shocked, but is awesomely supportive. My twins are now in their mid-twenties so my son shows his support via his computer genius and technical design and my daughter is, quite simply, my biggest promoter.

9. Besides writing, what other interests do you have?

I love to bake and cook, which is obviously reflected in my stories. When I have a writer’s block, I go into full pastry mode. It’s doesn’t do a whole lot for my waistline, but it usually breaks through the wall. Sometimes it only takes a batch of brownies, other times it five dozen biscotti. You just never know. I’m a huge football fan and I love to fish. I spend the majority of my time in Florida now, so there are tons of water activities to be found….if I can force myself away from the keyboard. And I’m a pretty decent bowler.

10. Can you tell us about what’s coming up next for you writing wise?

As far as releases, there will be one in August from Ellora’s Cave entitled “Filigree and Fantasy” about a jewelry maker who does an internship in Macedonia, a country renowned for its filigree work, and meets a sexy hero who is torn between his attraction to her and his duty to his family, some of whom are shape shifters. I’m also working on my final two brothers, the twins Sam and Matt, for my “Hot Henderson” series, and another Older Woman/Younger Man story. I love writing those….go figure.

Spotlight Review: SOMETHING ABOUT YOU by Julie James

SOMETHING ABOUT YOU Julie James

March 2010
Contemporary Romance

Chicago, Illinois ~ Present Day

Assistant U.S. District attorney Cameron Lynde doesn’t expect that a night spent in a nearby hotel while her house is unavailable would turn into overhearing a couple having loud, raucous sex—and someone getting murdered. But that is what happens, and with it brings danger to Cameron since she caught a glimpse of the alleged killer. She’s put into protective custody—and back into contact with FBI Special Agent Jack Pallas, a man who had an infamous run-in with Cameron that led to his being banished to Nebraska for the past three years. Jack is as thrilled to see Cameron as she is him, but protecting her is more important than their contentious squabbling. Of course, protecting her from the bad guy means 24/7 coverage. Will they be able to be around each other without killing each other?

Three years ago, Jack had worked long and hard on a case, only to see Cameron shoot it down. He spouted his mouth off to the press in anger about Cameron, which caused embarrassment to her and the FBI. He thinks she was the reason he got shipped off, and he’s not interested in being nice to her. Of course, Jack, being a dedicated agent, won’t let the bad guy have a crack at her, even if he is slightly tempted. And being up close and personal with Cameron suddenly has a certain part of his anatomy on full alert. Will he be able to keep his eye on—and his hands off—her?

A quirky beginning to SOMETHING ABOUT YOU sets the tone right away for readers in this engaging tale. What was supposed to be a night of relaxation soon turns into a horrifying nightmare when a woman is killed in the next room. Cameron has worked hard through the ranks at the U.S. District Attorney’s office, but she knows better than to argue with her superiors—or the FBI when she’s placed under protective custody. Of course, the last man she expected to be in charge would be Jack. The man is an annoying know-it-all who glowers at her and looks as if he needs a shave all the time. Okay, she can admit he looks sexy when he looks at her. Jack immediately puts a plan into place to guard Cameron, meaning he’s going to have to spend time around her. He still hasn’t forgotten it was she who sabotaged his investigation against a crime boss. But Jack soon realizes that Cameron isn’t the barracuda he thought her to be, even as it becomes harder and harder to hide his growing lust. Their sizzling chemistry is funny to watch, knowing it won’t be long before they give in to their passion. As for the murderer, well, readers learn about midway through SOMETHING ABOUT YOU who it is. It’s then a game of cat and mouse to see when Jack and Cameron figure it out—and how the person will be brought to justice.

Julie James has penned an entertaining, fast paced and well written tale to make it a highlight of my reading year. Make it yours by picking up SOMETHING ABOUT YOU.

Book Giveaway: The Mammoth Book of Irish Romance anthology

Too many names to list as to who all is in it, but if you love Irish romances, then this will be a book for you! It's currently out now and available at most online stores.

An enthralling collection of romantic tales set amidst beautiful Ireland’s lush ancient landscapes: pre-Christian ruins, green hills, rugged cliffs, and pounding Atlantic surf. These stories—by writers such as Roberta Gellis, Bertice Small, Jennifer Ashley, Claire Delacroix, and Mary Jo Putney—honor Ireland’s rich heritage as a land of poets, magic, and mystery. The publication will be just in time for St. Patrick’s Day.

Want this? Then tell us if you have any St. Patrick's Day plans. Wear green? Eat Irish food or drink Irish liquor?

Tell us!

And I'll pick a winner on Wednesday night, St.Patrick's Day, of course.

Q&A with Louisa Edwards... and a giveaway!!!

1. Tell us about your newest release.

Louisa: On the Steamy Side is the second book in my Recipe for Love series; it’s connected to my debut culinary romance, Can’t Stand the Heat, but if you haven’t read that one, don’t worry about it. On the Steamy Side can definitely be read as a stand-alone story! It’s about jaded, cynical celebrity chef Devon Sparks, whose entire life is being turned inside out. Here’s the blurb:

She’s Never Met A Man So Mouth-Watering

When Lilah Jane Tunkle fled her dull life in Virginia for the bright lights of New York City, she didn’t expect to wind up a nanny to a gorgeous celebrity chef’s ten-year-old son. Working for the delectable Devon Sparks is a sure-fire recipe for disaster, especially after Lilah gets a tantalizing taste of his perfectly seasoned kisses . . .

And He Can’t Resist Her Down-Home Spice

Devon’s not sure he can handle one more surprise ingredient in his life—he left his popular TV show, his culinary reputation is on the line, and now the son he barely knows is back for seconds. Lilah’s Southern sass is supposed to keep the boy in line, but soon enough she’s teaching Devon a thing or two about homespun food . . . and turning up the heat.

2. Can you tell us a little about your favorite scene in the story?

Louisa: Ooh, that’s a tough one! I think I’d have to go with the scene where Lilah finally confronts Devon about his reasons for having been so hands-off with his son. Devon’s answers are not at all what she wants to hear, but Devon is unflinching about casting himself as the villain of the piece, and it becomes a real turning point in their relationship. It was exciting to write, because it felt fresh and different, and I’m proud of the way it turned out.

3. When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

Louisa: I think all writers are readers first. I got addicted to romance novels at a young age, stealing Harlequins out of my grandmother’s suitcase. As I devoured stories of knights, princesses, billionaire tycoons, and cowboys, the desire to spin my own stories grew in the back of my mind. I got sidetracked for a while by becoming a junior editor at a major publishing house, which was a job I totally adored. I learned a ton and enjoyed it a lot, but when we moved away from New York, I knew the time had come for me to give writing a real try.

4. Where do you get your information or ideas for your stories?

Louisa: I get inspiration from a lot of different sources—cooking TV shows, chef memoirs, cookbooks, and my own experiences in restaurants and in the kitchen.

5. What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?

Louisa: I’d say my favorite quirk is my fondness for romantic subplots—I just can’t get enough of them! They can be used to explore pairings that push the envelope of mainstream romance, a way to play with fresh, exciting stories that you might not otherwise have the chance to explore. I love to read them, and I love to write them.

6. What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your books?

Louisa: I was surprised to learn how willful characters can be sometimes. When I was an editor, I tended toward skepticism when authors would complain about their stubborn characters who wouldn’t do what they were supposed to. I would think to myself, “You’re the writer! Just write it the way you want it to be!” Now I understand a little better. It’s not that the characters are so intractable, it’s that sometimes the author’s subconscious sees through the story plan to what the core of a character should be. If you’re open to that kind of discovery, it can be both a revelation and a complete pain in the behind.

7. What authors or friends influenced you in helping you become a writer?

Louisa: My agent, Deidre Knight, was the one who first told me to quit writing to a trend and to write a book I felt truly connected to, and it was absolutely the advice that led to selling the Recipe for Love series to St. Martin’s Press. Before I started it, I was sure no one in NY would want a culinary romance with a chef hero—but it matched my interests so perfectly, I decided to write it for myself, without worrying about hitting the market or what an editor might think. It’s important to know your genre and your market, but getting too hung up on the current trends can be very stifling, creatively.

8. What does your family think about your career as a published author?

Louisa: My husband is wonderfully supportive and one of my first readers when I finish a draft of a manuscript. My other early readers? My mother and my sister. My writing career is a family affair!

9. Besides writing, what other interests do you have?

Louisa: Well, I love to cook, and I love to try new foods, which goes well with my interest in travel. Traveling is hard on my deadlines, though, so I try to supplement by being adventurous in what I cook. Every year, I set myself a culinary goal, either to attempt an unfamiliar technique, like making a terrine, or to tackle something I’m a little afraid of, like shucking oysters or boiling a lobster. Keeps things interesting!

10. Can you tell us about what's coming up next for you writing wise?

Louisa: The third Recipe for Love novel goes on sale August 31st. Just One Taste is the final book in what I’m calling the Market Trilogy, the first three books of the series, all of which center around the kitchen crew of a Manhattan eatery called Market. My next trilogy will be out in 2011, and it follows a group of talented, passionate young cooks as they compete for the title of Best American Chef. I’m so excited about everything that’s coming up with this series, and I hope readers are, too!

You can read all my Recipe for Love novels as stand-alones—and be just fine. But I know a lot of readers like to start a series at the very beginning, so from me to one lucky commentator today: an autographed copy of Can’t Stand the Heat, my very first Recipe for Love novel!

Spotlight Review: Chick With a Charm by Vicki Lewis Thompson

CHICK WITH A CHARM – Vicki Lewis Thompson
Babes on Brooms
Signet Eclipse
ISBN: 978-0-45-22936-6
March 2010
Paranormal Romance

Chicago – Present Day

Lily Revere is a witch and a bartender at the Bubbling Cauldron. Tired of waiting for Griffin Taylor to make the first move, even though she sees the attraction in his eyes, Lily brews an ‘adoration elixir’ to put in Griffin’s drink. She uses her dog, Daisy, as her familiar, and uses the dog’s devotion to her as part of the spell. Lily is determined to take the handsome lawyer to her sister Anica’s engagement party, even though using magic on another person is against the witches’ creed.

Griffin is definitely attracted to the beautiful bartender, but she is too attractive and frivolous for him. He wants a sensible, down to earth woman...or does he? Why aren't the women he should be attracted to as good looking as Lily? Griffin and his friends attend their usual happy hour at the Bubbling Cauldron, and Lily serves him her special drink. Later in the evening, he begins to get very restless and desperate to see Lily. He asks Lily for one night—but only one night. Little does he know that one night will make the spell even stronger! Anica phones her sister trying to talk her out of going with Griffin. She reminds her sister what happened when she used magic on her fiancé and turned him into a cat! (See Anica’s romance in BLONDE WITH A WAND).

Lily agrees to go out with Griffin for coffee only, although that is not what he has on his mind. He can’t seem to stop panting after her! When Griffin meets Daisy, they have an instant rapport—has he met this dog before? Why does she seem so familiar? This is one smart pound dog! Griffin is very enticed and amorous with Lily. Is it the spell, or are his real feelings coming to the fore? What will happen when he finds out that Lily is a witch and he is under her spell? Griffin doesn’t know what hit him, and Lily is beginning to feel very guilty about the whole situation.

Another comical and sexy story from the pen of Vicki Lewis Thompson, CHICK WITH A CHARM is a sizzling-hot paranormal romance. It is a bedroom romp along with a light-hearted and entertaining story.

A Perfect 10: Some Like it Rough by Kate Pearce, Susan Lyons and Anne Rainey

SOME LIKE IT ROUGH – Kate Pearce, Susan Lyons and Anne Rainey
A Perfect 10
Kensington Aphrodisia
ISBN: 978-0-7582-3898-6
March 2010
Erotic Contemporary Romance Anthology

Some Like It Rough – Kate Pearce
Gulch Town, California

Luke Warner has returned to town to restore his family’s old pharmacy. Luke had left town hurriedly years ago, and his return is sure to raise a few eyebrows from the townsfolk, especially those of Julia and Paul. The trio was much more than friends as teenagers, but Luke’s sudden departure left a gaping hole in each of their lives. Julia and Paul are lovers, and Luke has a secret passion for the lady himself, but he’s not about to infringe on the couple’s relationship. That is, until he’s invited to a night of passion with Julia. And what about Paul and Luke? Is there also something between them?

Kate Pearce has penned a sizzling tale with Some Like It Rough. Gulch Town could be any rural, western town in the United States, but the close-then-ripped-asunder relationship of Luke, Paul and Julia isn’t. The chemistry and unspoken desire between the three percolates until it’s a raging river ready to spillover —or split their friendship. Luke has secrets he hasn’t told his friends. Is now the time to reveal it all? And how do Julia, Paul and Luke really feel about each other? Can they remain friends in the future—or are they daring to rip their lives apart?

Cowboys, sexy men and a scorching triangle. What more could a reader ask for in Some Like It Rough?

Private Eyes – Susan Lyons
Vancouver, British Columbia Canada

Ry Montana and Haley Croft are two of the detectives working for The Private Eye. Their current assignment involves the investigation of a woman who works at a strip club. The woman’s husband suspects she is cheating on him and has hired the PI agency to find out. The only way to get close to the suspect is to have a female PI pose as a stripper. Sweet, seemingly innocent Haley offers to go undercover (or get uncovered, so to speak). Ry is surprised at the offer and even more so when she turns into a tigress on the stage. He’s suddenly looking at her in a new way. For Haley, stripping gives her power she didn’t know she had, the ability to have men look at her as a sexually satisfying female. Especially, Ry.

Susan Lyons has exquisitely blended a story that’s both sweet and sensual in Private Eyes. A woman who enjoys stripping in front of a roomful of men isn’t your everyday heroine. Ry’s eyes are opened as he really looks at Haley for the first time and discovers he likes what he sees. Not because she is naked, but rather, for the person who she has now become, like a flower blooming on a warm spring day. There are multiple characters in Private Eyes, but this terrific tale focuses on the relationship between Ry and Haley.

Haley may be ready to strut her stuff, but she only has eyes for Ry. A tempting treat of a tale, Private Eyes will leave you smiling.

Cherry on Top – Anne Rainey
Zanesville, Ohio

Cherry Dubois runs a respectable massage therapy business, though her next door business neighbor Dante Ricci is suspicious of her. He also is irked because he wanted to expand, but Cherry took the space. This hasn’t stopped her from secretly lusting after him, with fantasies she knows could never come true with a man as distant and cold as Dante. They are nodding acquaintances, but one day he walks into her business and schedules a massage. When he comes onto her, she’s shocked, and refuses him, but he’s relentless. Finally, she gives in and agrees to dinner. Things begin to heat up and a dinner turns into a weekend spent having fabulous, mind-blowing sex with Dante. They learn they have a lot of things in common, such as when she agrees to have him be her Master in a submissive/Dominant relationship.

Anne Rainey knows how to turn up the heat in Cherry on Top. Dante is an alpha male extraordinaire, while Cherry just wants to make a success of her life after a disastrous marriage and isn’t looking for a guy to share it with. Their interactions are combustible, both in and out of bed, leading to some scorching sex. Better plan on wearing asbestos gloves while reading Cherry on Top! If you like some BDSM with your romance, then this tale is definitely one I highly recommend for your reading pleasure.

When Dante finally gets to claim his Cherry, get ready for a steamy read you won’t forget in Cherry on Top.

Each tale stands alone, but each one brings together some terrific writing from three outstanding authors. By the time I finished SOME LIKE IT ROUGH, I knew it richly deserved a Perfect 10 and would go on my keeper shelf. If you are looking for a sizzling read that is time well spent, then pick up SOME LIKE IT ROUGH.

Q&A with Erica Ridley!!!!

1. Tell us about your newest release.

Too Wicked To Kiss is a Gothic romance with a murder mystery at its core. The hero is the most likely suspect, and the heroine is determined to unmask the killer... no matter who it might be. Here is the back cover copy:

HIS TOUCH HOLDS HER CAPTIVE...

From the ravens circling its spires to the gargoyles adorning its roof, Blackberry Manor looms ominously over its rambling grounds. And behind its doors, amid the flickering shadows and secret passageways, danger lies in wait.

TO HIS EVERY DARK DESIRE...

Evangeline Pemberton has been invited to a party at the sprawling estate of reclusive Gavin Lioncroft, who is rumored to have murdered his parents. Initially, Gavin's towering presence and brusque manner instill fear in Evangeline...until his rakish features and seductive attentions profoundly arouse her. But when a guest is murdered, Evangeline is torn. Could the man to whom she is so powerfully drawn, also be a ruthless killer?

TOO WICKED TO KISS

2. When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

Before kindergarten... I literally cannot remember a time when I didn't want to be a writer. I wrote short stories, long sagas, many a first chapter or first-hundred-pages that went nowhere, poetry, songs... just about anything. I was on both my high school newspaper staff as well as the yearbook staff, and loved it. Shortly thereafter I read my first romance novel (Once a Princess, by Johanna Lindsey) and from then on, my course was set!

3. Where do you get your information or ideas for your stories?

I like to daydream about redoing something familiar in an unfamiliar way. If I see an interesting idea in, say, a horror movie or a comedy sitcom, or read a strange-but-true fact in the newspaper, I'm instantly brainstorming, "What if this happened in Regency England?" and combining one element with another until I have something totally new.

4. What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?

As my friend Carrie Ryan would say, I have plenty of myths about how I write. Gotta be first thing in the morning, no music or other distractions, 1.5 cups of coffee down the hatch already... And truly, those are my ideal conditions. I've discovered, however, that I can write hunched over a table in a busy cafe, or with the window open to the sound of children shouting in the park below. Just like when I'm reading a good book, when I'm immersed in the lives of my characters, reality disappears, and the only world I'm aware of is the one I'm creating with my keyboard and my imagination.

5. What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your books?

That it's harder than I ever anticipated... and twice as fun! Pushing myself through the rough patches really helped me to grow as a writer. Sharing scenes with my critique partners and talking shop with my published friends really helped me to achieve a more balanced view of the industry as a whole. So I guess the most surprising thing was that no matter how solitary the physical act of writing is, I very much feel part of a tight, supportive community.

6. What authors or friends influenced you in helping you become a writer?

Oh man, this is going to be a list! LOL. First and foremost, joining Romance Writers of America was the smartest thing I could've done. Joining TARA (my local writing chapter) was the second. The Tampa chapter boasts treasures like Betina Krahn, Virginia Henley, Julie Leto, Karen Rose, Roxanne St Claire, Sue Kearney, CL Wilson, and Diana Peterfreund, all of whom are savvy, classy, friendly, talented authors. My critique partners (the one-time Manuscript Mavens) are Darcy Burke, Jackie Barbosa, and Lacey Kaye. And I would not have found them if it weren't for the infamous Avon FanLit of a few years ago, where I also met my friends and fellow writers Tessa Dare and Courtney Milan. Eloisa James is one of my all-time favorite people--to know her is to love her. There are so many others who have befriended me or shared knowledge with me or dished industry news with me over margaritas that I can't even begin to count!

7. What does your family think about your career as a published author?

At the beginning, my grandmother was pretty much the only other person of my acquaintance who thought "career" and "writing" sounded just fine together in the same sentence. My family is well-meaning, but thought a "real job" might be the wiser pursuit. Four years later, I've finally got a book on the shelves and they couldn't be prouder of me. In fact, as soon as pre-orders became available, my mother drove straight to the closest bookstore and ordered 22 copies!

8. Can you tell us about what’s coming up next for you writing wise?

A connected book tentatively titled Too Sinful To Deny will be out in 2011. And in the meantime, I'm working on proposals for more Gothic historical romance!
