Spotlight Review: DIVINE MISDEMEANORS by Laurell K. Hamilton
Merry Gentry Series, Book 8
Ballantine Books (Hardcover)
Los Angeles, California
It took a lot of courage but very little thought for Princess Meredith Gentry of the Sidhe to give up the Unseelie Throne. She chose love over a crown, and she's not looking back. Now, settled in L.A. with the men she loves at her side, Merry worries about getting everyone acclimated to their new lives and enough money to support an ever expanding household. Oh, and learning that not even the Sidhe are saved from morning sickness.
Called in to a crime scene for her preternatural assistance, Merry is witness to one of the worse atrocities she's ever seen. Even worse, the victims are demi-fey and supposedly immortal. A police investigation might just be enough to take her mind off of the familial drama overtaking her household. A woman's work is never done.
The next segment in Merry's life and adventures begins as she closes the door firmly on the Seelie and Unseelie Thrones and moves out into the human world in DIVINE MISDEMEANORS. Unfortunately, her new home brings along its own challenges, not to mention that just because she has renounced the Sidhe world, it doesn't mean that they're as willing to let her go. Readers will be happy to enjoy the return of Frost, not to mention that some familiar characters are getting more screen time than in previous years. I must say I was disappointed to see one of my favorite secondary characters be a bit more whiny, once he had the stage and the freedom, than one would expect of a former god. I hope to see him evolve with time and look forward to seeing him get his comeuppance in the future.
Merry may not be Queen, but she definitely has her own court, one that is more family than courtiers. This new chapter in her life looks to be as intriguing, adventurous and exciting as in the previous seven books of the series. Laurell K. Hamilton has penned another page-turner, and waiting for the next book isn't going to be any easier.
