Q&A with Jeanne St. James!

Give a warm welcome to erotic romance author, Jeanne St.James!

1. Tell us about your newest release.

BANGED UP is my newest release which came out last month. I wrote BANGED UP when a scene popped into my head. It ended up being the beginning scene which is an injured FBI agent coming come to heal and being confronted in his own house by a gun-wielding stranger. The irony of him coming home and being put in harms way in his own “safe haven” was what got the story started.

Here’s the blurb for BANGED UP:

Two scarred souls: one physically, one mentally. Both on the mend, hiding from their pasts…

Mace Walker can’t wait to get home.

Being buried deep undercover for the past two years, on the most complex case of his career, has torn him down physically and mentally. Now the FBI agent has come home to recover after having his leg badly injured from a gunshot wound. Arriving home late one night, his relief is short-lived as he’s faced with a stranger pointing a gun to his head, acting like he is the one who doesn’t belong there!

Colby Parks, a biochemist at the local university, had come to town a year earlier to escape an abusive relationship. She vows never to put herself in that situation again.

Then the perfect opportunity comes along: house-sitting for Mace’s sister while making the house she purchased habitable. But she couldn’t anticipate this big snag: the one wearing the tight Levi’s and worn leather jacket, looking like he had just escaped prison.

Being forced to share a house creates sparks between them in more ways than one. However, things take a turn when their pasts catch up to them, threatening to pull them apart forever.

2. When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

Well, I started writing when I was 13 (many, many moons ago). So I guess I have to say then.

3. Where do you get your information or ideas for your stories?

Oh, it depends on the book. But I have a thing about men in uniform whether it is law enforcement or a football player.

4. What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?

I write in the evenings and at night. I can not write in the morning. I’m not a morning person and my creativity is at its highest later in the day.

5. What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your books?

That I can come up with some very kinky ideas. :)

6. What authors or friends influenced you in helping you become a writer?

I would say there were two authors that influenced me the most: Laura Kinsale and Katherine Sutcliffe. I loved their books and their injured heroes.

7. What does your family think about your career as a published author?

Honestly, I don’t know. I’ve never asked them. I know my husband is proud but doesn’t read my stuff. He’s just not a reader. We don’t have any children.

8. Can you tell us about what’s coming up next for you writing wise?

I am currently doing edits on Double Dare and Rip Cord. Rip Cord is my first male/male novella. It will be released 11/30 at Phaze as part of their Rebel-themed Heatsheets. Double Dare is my first interracial ménage a trois (male/male/female) which is going to be released in January with Loose Id. You can read more about them, including excerpts on my website. I am also working on two more stories for two different publishers. One is holiday themed and the other is fairy-tale themed.

Spotlight Review: Dragon Moon by Rebecca York!

DRAGON MOON - Rebecca York
The Moon Series
Berkley Sensation
ISBN: 978-0-425-23098-5
October 2009
Paranormal Romance

Pennsylvania and Otherworld - Present Day

Three months ago, Kenna was abducted from her job as a tutor and has spent the time since fearing for her life. An adept (person with magical abilities), Kenna has been preparing children for the adept school, and has had a fairly comfortable life. Then soldiers took her to their master, Vandar, who invaded her mind and uses her, as he does three hundred others, as a slave to his whims. Out of fear, she has performed the jobs assigned to her and done her best to keep from becoming Vandar’s next meal. When he summons her to his office, she’s terrified, but he gives her a new assignment, one that gives Kenna her first glimpse of hope. He is sending her as a spy to another universe to gather information so he can invade. Kenna learns that her chances of escaping are slim, and she’s going to have to do what Vandar commands, both thanks to the compulsion the powerful monster has implanted in her psyche.

After finding a buried box containing a million dollars, Talon Marshall knows that trouble will be finding him, but he hadn’t anticipated trouble being so beautiful. There’s something about Kenna that has Talon on edge. He senses that she may be important to him, and for a werewolf trying to avoid finding his lifemate, he’s not very comfortable. At the same time, he can’t completely trust a woman so confused by modern conveniences and ill at ease with the thought of the authorities. Exactly what is Kenna hiding from him, and does it have anything to do with the money Talon found?

The Marshall pack is back in DRAGON MOON, once again facing a threat from a parallel universe. Talon is aware of the fact that the mated Marshall men have come together in a way that’s been almost impossible since their family curse set in, but he hasn’t connected with the others yet. The oddities in Kenna’s behavior have Talon calling on Ross Marshall, a private investigator, but Talon couldn’t have predicted the strange things coming his way. Kenna had enjoyed a nice life prior to her abduction, but during her time as a slave, she has been pretty much on her own. The lying she is forced to do to Talon is tearing Kenna apart -–- literally -–- and the more time she spends with him, the more she regrets those lies, because the secrets and mistrust will make a lasting relationship impossible. Their romance starts off on pretty rocky footing, and the outside obstacles are only going to make things more difficult.

The family dynamics and history, along with the parallel universe, are better understood if you’ve read the series in order. However, while the Otherworld is the same universe that the other stories were set in, the place where Vandar resides is not the city previously mentioned. For an engaging story that gives readers a chance to revisit the old characters, as well as introducing a few new ones, check out DRAGON MOON.

Elijah, Duke of Beaumont, did believe those rumors.

But the handsome duke needs an heir, so he summons his seductive wife home. Jemma laughs at Elijah’s cool eyes and icy heart—but to her secret shock, she doesn’t share his feelings. In fact, she wants the impossible: her husband’s heart at her feet.

But what manner of seduction will make a man fall desperately in love…with his own wife?

Spotlight Review: THE LONE TEXAN by Jodi Thomas

THE LONE TEXAN - Jodi Thomas
A Whispering Mountain Novel
Berkley
ISBN: 978-0-425-23062-6
October 2009
Historical Romance

Texas - 1859

It’s been four long years since Sage McMurray has seen her native Texas...and a lot has changed in her life. She is now a doctor, and she is also a widow. Her late husband was her mentor at medical school, and their brief marriage was more poignant than loving. Stepping off the ship in Galveston onto Texas soil is emotional and exciting for her, and for her traveling companion, Bonnie, a nurse from Boston, who will be working with Sage in her practice. But almost immediately, Sage is drawn into a situation that demands her medical skills. A woman and her two young sons have been rescued by Rangers and brought to Galveston. One of those involved in the rescue is Drummond Roak, the waif taken in by the McMurrays years before.

Drum has been waiting four agonizing years for Sage’s return, and just before he can welcome her, he’s drawn into the rescue of the small family. Sadly, the woman dies, but before she does, she begs Drum to keep her sons safe. The men who killed her husband want her sons dead too. Drum promises and then hopes that he and Sage can come to terms with their relationship. Sage is adamant that they have no relationship, and she wants nothing to do with a man who lives by the gun. But when Sage is kidnapped and taken to a dangerous, secret location, Drum sets off to rescue her.

The hidden valley where Sage is taken is run by a man known as the Count. He’s been shot and needs a doctor. But once Sage helps him, he wants her for his own. When she rebuffs him, he angrily puts her up for auction in his saloon. Who is the tall, dark stranger who bids two hundred dollars and wins her? And how will they escape the heavily guarded sanctuary?

The Whispering Mountain series concludes with THE LONE TEXAN. The McMurray’s beloved ranch is now filled with the families and offspring of Teagan, Tobin, and Travis McMurray, and they anxiously await the return of little sister Sage. They’re not so excited about Drum’s involvement with her, though. This tale is one big adventure, with lots of sweet, poignant moments. Secondary characters are many, but Bonnie’s story is especially satisfying ---- the plain old maid who finds love in a very amazing way. The mystery of the two boys becomes a strong background tale to the difficulties that Sage and Drum must overcome.

I’m going to miss the McMurrays! THE LONE TEXAN is a terrific ending to this excellent series. Once again, Jodi Thomas has penned a wonderful page-turner.

Spotlight Review: Long, Lean and Lethal by Lori O'Clare

LONG, LEAN AND LETHAL - Lori O'Clare
St. Martin's Press
ISBN: 978-0-312-94343-1
October 2009
Romantic Suspense

Lincoln, Nebraska - Present Day

A series of murders across multiple states have come to the attention of the FBI and specifically special agent Noah Kayne. Swingers groups, couples who like to switch partners, have become the target of a murderer. Most recently, three individuals have been killed in Nebraska. Noah is dedicated to his job, especially fresh from a break up with his fiancée. Coincidentally, the reason for their split is that she was into the swinging lifestyle and Noah is into monogamy. So, this case is already bringing up bad memories for Noah when he meets his new and deliciously beautiful partner, Detective Rain Huxtable.

Rain Huxtable is also dedicated to her job, and she also likes to work alone. She can crack the swingers case by herself and doesn't need the help of some hotshot FBI agent who doesn't know her city. Of course, her instant enthrallment with Noah doesn't help her focus her energies on the case as much as she'd like, and when they pose as husband and wife to go undercover in one of the groups, well, just how real will this 'marriage' get?

An intense attraction between two wary cops lies at the heart of the suspenseful, LONG, LEAN AND LETHAL. Rain and Noah are both used to working alone and don't believe they need help solving the case. But the temptation of their interest in each other soon overshadows the need to be top dog on the team. Setting up house together allows Rain and Noah to learn more about their new neighbors and each other. Both carry baggage from previous relationships, and the story starts slowly as they feel each other out. But as they mesh both their investigative and personal styles, the explosive attraction soon bursts into flame.

Lori O'Clare has penned an entertaining tale of love and murder. The search for a killer amongst the interesting cast of secondary characters serves as a compelling backdrop to the evolving romance between Rain and Noah. Pick up your copy of LONG, LEAN AND LETHAL and take a little swing on the dark side.

Guest Blogger: Kate Pearce talks about Heroes and Crackers

First off, thanks for having me back on the blog, ladies! I’m sure you’re sick of the sight of me, but I always love coming here because you have such great readers :) Today I’m going to talk about heroes, specifically my heroes and why I mentioned crackers.

I love all my heroes, if I didn’t, I wouldn’t be able to write about them. For me they all have something that appealed to me and qualities that made me think about them when I was writing other books or just daydreaming. But most of my heroes are also dark complex men with baggage and if I met them in real life, I suspect I’d be right out the door.

Let’s be honest, most Romance Heroes are not like Real Men. Real men don’t angst about that much, unless its sports or that the pub has closed and they certainly don’t go on about their feelings all the time. And let’s be even more frank. Most of them aren’t sex-gods either. (My husband wishes me to point out that he is a sex-god and that I’m in no way referencing him in any of this blog.).

I love Roark from J D Robb’s “In Death’ series, but again, I couldn’t live with him-all that cryptic conversation would wind me into knots. I love Jamie Frasier from the Outlander series but he is almost too good to be true, and I adore many of Linda Howard’s heroes but they tend to be the sexy dark angry ones for some reason.

My Regency Rakes in the ‘Simply…’ series’ Great at inventive kinky sex but basically unlivable with-(well with the exception of the one I’m writing now for the sixth book, Gabriel, who just might be okay...) Lord Anthony Sokorvsky from my current book “Simply Wicked’ would drive me nuts, he’s just too much man. All that sex, all the time? When would I get my romance reading done? And sorting out all their problems? I think not. I have a hard enough time dealing with my own stuff and my 4 kids.

Now, my contemporary cowboy heroes from the Turner brother series? Much more livable with-except Jay from “Roping the Wind” who is far too argumentative. Writing his book exhausted me, so living with him would be ten times worse. I think if I had to pick one hero, I’d probably be okay to share a bed full of cracker crumbs with, it would be Grayson from “Where have all the Cowboys Gone?” And coincidentally, he is the hero who is most like my husband. :)

My point is that I’d still rather share my bed and eat my crackers with a real man rather than a real Alpha Romance Hero. So tell me-who is your favorite romance hero (or heroes) and share whether you’d be happy to live with them in real life.

Thank you, Kate, and we are always glad to see you here. :)

Contemporary Romance

Tennessee - The Present

Former Pop Princess Dakota Dunn is fed up with the bright lights and big city of Los Angeles. No longer the cute little America’s sweetheart, twenty-five year-old Dakota needs a fresh start. She owns a fishing retreat in Tennessee and plans to go there to have some peace and quiet in order to write music and work on becoming a country singer.

Trace Coleman, the new manager of Dakota’s marina, is a former bull-riding champion who was badly injured and is now retired from rodeos. Dakota’s arrival is hardly good news to him; he figures she’s a princess who will make things difficult. But he’s hardly prepared for the gorgeous woman who immediately makes an impression on him. Will she make demands on him, or will she threaten the job he enjoys? Trace quickly puts up a barrier around him that Dakota finds confusing.

Slightly klutzy, Dakota sets out to get her life in order. If only the mice and spiders would go away! They have caused a few uncharacteristic moments for her involving Trace. Dakota soon makes friends with the marina’s cook, Sierra, who wants to be more sophisticated, while Dakota is trying to be less big city girl. They decide to help each other accomplish their goals. If only Dakota can get Trace to stop treating her like a princess!

HE’S NO PRINCE CHARMING is a quirky chick-lit tale that is filled with laughs. Each of the characters has a past he or she is trying to leave behind, and a future goal to strive for. Romance sizzles amid the piney lakeside resort. There are lots of slapstick events early on, and plenty of fun, too.

Book Giveaway: THE FIRE KING by Marjorie Liu

THE FIRE KING -- Marjorie Liu
Out now!

Long ago, shape-shifters were plentiful, soaring through the sky as crows, racing across African veldts as cheetahs, raging furious as dragons atop the Himalayas. Like gods, they reigned supreme. But even gods have laws, and those laws, when broken, destroy.

Zoufalství. Epätoivo. Asa. Three words in three very different languages, and yet Soria understands. Like all members of Dirk & Steele, she has a gift, and hers is communication. When she is chosen to learn the dead language of a shape-shifter resurrected after thousands of years of icy sleep, she discovers a warrior consumed with fury.

Strong as a lion, quick as a serpent—Karr is his name, and in his day he was king. But he is a son of strife, a creature of tragedy. As fire consumed all he loved, so death was to be his atonement. Now, against his will, he has awoken. Zoufalství. Epätoivo. Asa. In English, the word is despair. But Soria knows the words for love.

Question for readers. How many books a week do you read approxmately?  Post your answer and be entered to win this book! Winner will be chosen Tuesday night.
