Amazon starts censorship

If you haven't heard or otherwise been hibernating today, it was discovered that Amazon has decided to censor erotic romance novels by removing rankings. When you would do a search of a favorite author, for example, Kate Pearce, the search would not find her Kensington Aphrodisia books.

You can read more about the Amazon censorship by going to the SmartBitches site or by going to the Dear Author site.

This is a terrible thing for the freedom of speech and what we choose to buy here in America. How dare Amazon do this??

To give a little shove them in their face, I'm running a contest and all you have to do is comment here to be entered.

The prize: A $10 barnes and noble egiftcard.

Winner announced later this week!

I hate censorship. I have been reading about this all day and it just makes me so mad. It is discrimination and it is unfair for those authors and readers affected by the new policy. Barnes and Noble and Borders will be receiving my business from now on. I hope major news outlets report on this issue.

I've been reading about this all day and agree with everything I've seen about it so far. What in the world could haven gotten into Amazon! And I'm glad to see the thought I had about giving away B&N gift cards/certificates is actually being done! Great job!

This seems completely insane--I signed the online petition against this. Argh!

I signed the petition against this. I think it is so wrong to do this.

What a stupid move! I hadn't read about this yet, but now I want to go see how in the world they're justifying such a boneheaded move.

I was planning on putting in an order today. Looks like Amazon lost a customer.

WHAT are they thinking???

I agree, I dont think they should be able to do this. Anxious to see what happens in the upcoming days.

I agree, this is so wrong. If I search for an author, I want to see all her/his books regardless of content.

I heard that Amazon is backtracking on this by saying it was just a "glitch." Hmmm...I think that they got so many complaints that they decided to pretend they didn't really say this. It is unbelievable that Amazon even considered doing our thinking for us.

I've been reading about this all day, too. Amazon will lose a lot of customers if they don't reverse their new policy.

I'm really disappointed in Amazon for taking this stand. I just hope enough of us use our rights for free speech to guide Amazon in the right direction.

I was in hibernation most of the day Sunday when this s**t hit the fan so I didn't start reading about it until Monday AM. I'm sitting here in utter amazement wondering when our flag changed from Stars & Stripes to the Swastika. Censorship in any form is wrong. Our right to buy and read what we wish is protected by our constitution. What is Amazon's purpose behind this obvious bigoted censorship? Now Amazon is saying this is just a 'computer glitch'? What were they trying to do that caused this snafu?

I have been reading about this but i have a feeling even if amazon does put things back the way they were, they have lost customers.. I have been a loyal amazon buyer, and a kindle owner.. this better get fixed..

I was flabbergasted to wake up and read about this situation. Totally unacceptable. I will be taking my business elsewhere from now on.

Note: My BDSM title Black Magic Woman is not only unranked, and gone from the main search engine like the rest of my titles, but it is also completely gone.

I wonder if it was the short m/m scene in the book, or the fact that it was basically a femdom romance?

Grrr. Shame on you, Amazon!

I think it is so wrong for them to do this.

I had been reading about this situation and was completely appalled. Of course, they are now saying it is a technical glitch that will be rectified.

I heard about this on sunday. It's gonna be interesting to see if they fix the "glitch" anytime soon.

I was reading about this and find it hard to believe that they would do this. It is not their place to censor what people read. I hope they fix this quickly.

So disappointing. I really hope this is in fact just a glitch.

What a stupid move. They are certainly going to lose a lot of my money.
I don' think they have the right to censor what anyone reads.

I can't believe Amazon did that - but even worse, their non response, and lack of apology.
Badly done, Amazon. Badly done.

I saw they now said it was a 'glitch' its always used as a excuse and its getting tiring.

Can't imagine if had to censorship books with violence in them. All those suspense books wouldn't be up there either.

So its self-explanatory that you don't pick! Let the reader do that.
