Spotlight Review: IF LOOKS COULD CHILL by Nina Bruhns

IF LOOKS COULD CHILL – Nina Bruhns

December 2009
Romantic Suspense

St. Martin’s Parish, Louisiana – Present Day

Marc Lafayette works for Storm, part of a special ops team. Marc, Darcy, and Quinn worked undercover in Turkey to find the plans for a new bio-weapon, but failed in their attempt. Now, in Louisiana, they see evidence of the virus having been tested on animals. When State Trooper Tara Reeves sees the dead animals, Marc is told to neutralize her----he is not happy about baby sitting a police officer. Tara hires Marc to take her into the swamp. She wants to see first hand what is going on. The attraction between them sizzles.

A team of six from Storm has assembled in Louisiana hoping to find and destroy the terrorist cell operating in the bayou. Marc, Darcy, and Quinn are part of that team. Darcy and Quinn have had an on-again/off-again hot romance since meeting in Turkey.

Gina Capozzi, a scientist, is being held and forced to work on the virus by Abbas Tawhid, head of the Al Sayika terrorist organization. Rebel Haywood is looking for evidence on where she is, while Gina is praying for someone to rescue her from the terrorists. Alex Zane, who almost died on a mission for Storm, has just set the date to marry Rebel’s roommate, Helena Middleton; Rebel is heart-broken.

There is a lot of action in IF LOOKS COULD CHILL. It is anything but chilly---the sexual action is as hot and steamy as the action in the field. Members of the team don’t hesitate to make love or risk their lives hunting down the terrorists. Marc is a good guy, smitten by Tara, but will he be able to accept that it is love? And Darcy is tired of fooling around with Quinn; she wants a commitment. Rebel figures she doesn’t have a chance with Alex; can she forget him and meet someone new? The characters are all bold and colorful; the romance scenes are sensuous and intense. Chasing down the terrorists is frightening. Can they catch them before they kill a lot of people?

If you like a thrill a minute, you will enjoy IF LOOKS COULD CHILL. The gripping tale is well written and filled with intrigue and passion. With some threads left hanging, readers will look forward to the next book in this series, A KISS TO KILL.

Welcome to the Hotel Erotique, where sex is the main amenity.

Mild-mannered Jenna Banks has never considered sex a recreational sport, preferring instead to share herself one-on-one with a man she respects and loves. Then a friend secretly enters her in a contest—and to Jenna’s dismay she wins. It’s a two-week stay at the notorious Hotel Erotique, where every sexual fantasy comes true—in room after room, with stranger after stranger.

Even more unnerving for Jenna is Brent Powers, her wildly sensual personal guide, who can’t wait to put his degree in sexual psychology to work—by tapping into Jenna’s unspoken fantasies, and by allowing her to surrender her inhibitions and discover her true sense of freedom. But with the slow and steady seduction of Jenna come feelings that neither of them expected. And now where the final fantasy takes them depends on how far Jenna and Brent are really willing to go.

Want this?

To enter, tell us what you are going to be doing New Year's Eve? Any exciting plans, or in bed by 9:00?

I'll pick a winner on FRIDAY, the first of January.

Historical Romance

England and Scotland - 1860

Douglas Eston has arrived at the home of the Duke of Herridge to, hopefully, leave with an investment towards his invention. During the negotiations, the door bursts open and a vision of loveliness in the form of the duke’s daughter, Sarah, appears. She ignores Douglas, and with trembling hands and lips, demands that her father allow her mother to remain at their home instead of going to Scotland. The Duke ignores his daughter as he returns to Douglas’s query. When Douglas leaves, it is not only with the investment he came for, but with a wife!

Lady Sarah Baines is desperate to keep her comatose mother at home. Estranged from her husband, the duchess has wasted away, and Sarah knows that to move her would hasten her death. At odds with her father since birth, Sarah has always been terrified of the man, but the love for her mother is stronger, and her desperate attempt to keep the duchess in England has resulted in something she never anticipated...a husband. Sarah knows nothing about Douglas Eston and has no intention of consummating a marriage forced upon her, no matter how strikingly good looking her new spouse is.

The newlywed couple returns to Sarah’s home, Chavensworth, where Douglas sets up his laboratory in the hillside observatory that had been Sarah’s retreat. He hasn’t yet told his new wife what it is he is developing, but then, she hasn’t asked either. They sleep in the same room, but Sarah has moved a cot in for herself. It’s going to take a lot of work on his part to soften the prickly Sarah.

What neither Sarah nor Douglas knows is what the other has been through in life. Although Douglas is rapidly becoming aware of how Chavensworth has become Sarah’s obsession; she has a need to manage every little aspect of the great estate. She’s had nothing else to live for, and now with her mother dying, there is a sense of panic that she is losing the only person who has ever loved her, and the only one Sarah has ever loved. Douglas must tread carefully to show her that she is not alone. But he has his own secrets, and it’s not yet time to reveal them to his new wife.

I love Karen Ranney’s writing and her in-depth analyses of people’s foibles, good and bad. This character driven story grips the reader at page one when Sarah brushes aside her terror to confront her cruel, domineering father. It’s also when Douglas sees a little of himself as he conquered fears to become the man he is. While secondary characters are a strong part of the book, Sarah and Douglas dominate.

SOLD TO A LAIRD is another of Ms. Ranney’s wonderful Victorian-era novels that tell a powerful story and leaves a reader very satisfied.

A Perfect 10: HUNTER'S NEED by Shiloh Walker

HUNTER’S NEED - Shiloh Walker
A Perfect 10
The Hunters, Book 11
Berkley Sensation
ISBN: 978-0-425-23150-0
December 2009
Paranormal Romance

Anchorage, Alaska - Present Day

In the four years since Analise Morell used her psychic gift to lure Duke into the clutches of a feral vamp, thereby making it possible for the Hunters to rescue not only Duke, but also Ana and her brother Brad, she has learned a lot. Her time at Excelsior taught her to control her gift, that she’s not strong enough to be a Hunter, and finally, while they may have allowed her to live at the exclusive school, nobody really wanted her there. She still wants Duke, but after the way she betrayed him, Ana is lucky to be alive----hoping for anything more would be ridiculous. Knowing it was time to move on, Ana struck out on her own.

Now, a year later, Ana’s built a comfortable life for herself in Alaska, far from the paranormal and gifted beings. An encounter with a homeless man changes things for Ana. Initially suspected of killing his girlfriend thirty years earlier, Paul wanders the town, often talking to himself, and mostly people think he’s crazy. Ana sees the desperation in his eyes, though, and knows that he’s neither crazy nor a killer. She feels the pull to find out what happened to his girlfriend, and during her investigation, she realizes that there is something wrong in Anchorage. Something she needs a Hunter’s help for.

The last place in the world Duke Lawson wants to be is anywhere near Ana Morell. He can’t forgive her betrayal, but he also can’t forget how much he wanted her that night five years ago. With no one else able to travel to Alaska, Duke’s going to have to figure out a way to work with her. It doesn’t take him long to get the answer to a question that has haunted him for years though----Ana wanted him that night just as much as he wanted her----and she still does. As they deal with the mysteries she’s uncovered, Ana and Duke finally get a chance to explore what has been between them since their first meeting.

They’ve been fighting it for years, but things finally come together for Ana and Duke in HUNTER’S NEED. After being rescued, Duke and the other Hunters realized that everything that Ana did, she did to keep her brother safe, and while he can’t condone her actions, Duke at least understands. Forgiveness is another matter entirely, and impossible until Duke is willing to admit that he was emotionally hurt by her actions. Ana doesn’t expect forgiveness or anything else from any of the Hunters. She’s shocked to find out that Duke is still attracted to her and, though she knows she’ll be hurt when he leaves, Ana is willing to take what she can get.

Ms. Walker has created an interesting world with her Hunters series, and it is probably best to read the previous books in order to get the full impact. However, the relationship between Ana and Duke takes place far away from the other Hunters, and with minimal contact with any of them. This book also focuses so completely on their romance and the mystery they find in Alaska, that it does pretty well as a stand-alone tale. Either way, HUNTER’S NEED is a riveting tale that I couldn’t put down and wanted to read again as soon as I finished. Which is why I am awarding it a Perfect 10 and highly recommending you pick up your copy immediately.

Q&A with HELEN BRENNA and a book giveaway!

1. Tell us about your newest release.

Then Comes Baby, my December Superromance, is the 3rd in a so far 4 book series set on Mirabelle Island. (Three more books are possible for 2011.) This book takes us away from the quaint idyllic village to the secluded, rustic northwest end of the island where Jamis, a horror novelist, has attempted to isolate himself from the world. His peace is shattered when Natalie moves in next door and starts a summer camp for kids.

2. When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

I’ve always been a voracious reader, especially of romances, but never, ever imagined trying to write one. My undergraduate degree is in accounting, for heaven’s sake! But when I started staying home with my, then, two year old daughter, I decided to give it a try. What a roller coaster of a journey this has been!

3. Where do you get your information or ideas for your stories?

My information and ideas come from all over the place. Travels, newspapers, movies, music, books, brainstorming with my kids and writer friends. In the shower, driving, cooking, it can happen anywhere, anytime.

4. What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?

I’m not very interesting. Really. As for writing quirks … it used to be the only way I could write was at my computer in my office wearing a particular sweater. But then I suffered a herniated disk in my spine last year and had to learn how to write on my laptop while in a prone position. Now I’m not quirky any longer. I don’t even wear the sweater!

5. What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your books?

This is a tough question. I do a lot of research for my books. They’ve been set in the Bahamas, Peru, Greece, Argentina. I’m writing one now that takes place, in part, in Turkey and Russia. I’ve never been to any of these places, but I learn about languages, customs, food, you name it. It’s all good.

6. What authors or friends influenced you in helping you become a writer?

I had just finished reading a LaVyrle Spencer historical when I first got the urge to write. I then joined a critique group – we were all unpublished at the time – with Connie Brockway and Susan Kay Law, both of whom are now multi-published award winning authors. I would’ve never sold my first book years later without what I learned from that first critique group.

7. What does your family think about your career as a published author?

My family is extremely supportive. They think my writing is awesome. They cheerlead, cook and clean when I’m under deadline, pimp my books to their family and friends, and even brainstorm with me. Some even read my books and like them! At least that’s what they tell me.

8. Can you tell us about what’s coming up next for you writing wise?

The 4th in the Mirabelle series is out in June 2010. The book I’m writing now, as yet untitled, is the sequel to my October 2008 Superromance, FINDING MR RIGHT and features Maggie’s little sister, Kate, and her bodyguard from that story. It’s a romantic suspense/adventure that has Kate and Riley working against the clock to steal several statues in order to save Riley’s kidnapped sister. I just turned in a proposal for 3 more Mirabelle stories I hope to write for 2011. Sarah needs her own hero!

Thanks for having me at Romance Reviews Today. And double thanks for the Perfect 10 reviews!

You can learn more about Helen Brenna by visiting her website at: www.helenbrenna.com

Now, for an added treat, we want you to ask Helen questions or make comments because she has graciously agreed to give away a copy of her December book to one lucky reader!!!

Spotlight Review: MIDNIGHT PLEASURES WITH A SCOUNDREL by Lorraine Heath

MIDNIGHT PLEASURES WITH A SCOUNDREL - Lorraine Heath
Avon Books
ISBN: 978-0-06-173400-7
November 2009
Historical Romance

London, 1852

Miss Eleanor Watkins, daughter of an obscure viscount, has come to London for one reason...vengeance. She's willing to die if necessary, so long as the man who drove her sister to suicide dies first.

James Swindler has made a name for himself working for justice as Scotland Yard's most successful detective, a far cry from the orphaned thief he once was after he watched his father hang. His current assignment doesn't sit well with him; it's not one of the usual crimes he's good at solving. The Marquess of Rockberry reported a young woman wants to kill him. Swindler's assignment is to follow the woman and ascertain her intent.

As Eleanor trails Rockberry through a pleasure park at night, she has the uncanny feeling she is being followed instead.

Swindler wonders at the young woman putting herself in such danger and has to come to her rescue when three "gentlemen" accost her. In this way he meets his subject. Eventually, he decides he must woo her into revealing her motives for following the marquess around, though he can't imagine this young innocent represents any danger to the peer.

MIDNIGHT PLEASURES WITH A SCOUNDREL is the fourth novel in the Scoundrels of St. James series that chronicles the adventures of a group of slum children who once thieved for their living. One of them was found to be the lost heir of an earl, another became a wealthy owner of a gentleman's club, and the lone female married into the aristocracy. The four remain fast friends and, along with their spouse, come to Swindler's aid before the tale is over.

As in the earlier books, the main characters arouse compassion and admiration, and the plot is compelling. There is mystery and emotion enough to keep a body reading way past bedtime. It's not a light read; parts are quite dark and twisty, but the whole is riveting.

THE MANE SQUEEZE -- Shelly Laurenston
Out now! Available at most bookstores

Blurb:

Growing up on the tough Philly streets, Gwen O'Neill has learned how to fend for herself. But what is she supposed to do with a nice, suburban Jersey boy in the form of a massive Grizzly shifter? Especially one with a rather unhealthy fetish for honey, moose, and...uh...well, her. Yet despite his menacing ursine growl and four-inch claws, Gwen finds Lachlan 'Lock' MacRyrie cute and really sweet. He actually watches out for her, protects her, and unlike the rest of her out-of-control family manages not to morbidly embarrass her. Too bad cats don't believe in forever. At nearly seven feet tall, Lock is used to people responding to him in two ways: screaming and running away. Gwen - half lioness, half tigress, all kick-ass - does neither. She's sexy beyond belief and smart as hell, but she's born protector. Watching out for the family and friends closest to her but missing the fact that she's being stalked by a murderous enemy who doesn't like hybrids...and absolutely hates Gwen. Lock probably shouldn't get involved, but he will. Why? Because this is Gwen - and no matter what the hissing, roaring, drape destroying feline says about not being ready to settle down, Lock knows he can't simply walk away. Not when she's come to mean absolutely everything to him.

Centuries ago, by a scaffold in Manhattan, rose petals drifted gently to the ground...

...like snow on a wintry Massachusetts night. Melody Tarleton is driving home for Christmas when a man - clad in Revolutionary War-era costume - appears out of nowhere, right in the path of her car. Shaken, she takes the injured stranger in, listening with concern to Jake Mallory’s fantastic claim that he’s a Patriot soldier, sentenced to death by British authorities. The last thing he remembers is the tug of the noose.

Safe at her parents’ house, Melody concocts a story to explain the handsome holiday guest with the courtly manners, strange clothes and nasty bump on the head. Mark, her close friend who wishes he were more, is skeptical and her family is fascinated - though not half so fascinated as Melody herself. Jake is passionate, charming and utterly unlike anyone she’s ever met. Can he really be who he claims? And can a man from the distant past be the future she truly longs for?

With the aid of enchanted petals, ancient potions and the peculiar magic of the season, Melody and Jake embark on an unimaginable Christmas adventure - and discover a love that transcends time.

A Perfect 10: ICE by Linda Howard

ICE - Linda Howard
A Perfect 10
Ballantine Books (Hardcover)
ISBN: 978-0-345-51719-7
November 2009
Romantic Suspense

Mid-December; Wilson Creek, Maine

After losing his wife three years ago, Army Sergeant Gabriel McQueen hasn't been able to see his son Sam as often as he'd like. Gabe is stationed in North Caroline, while Sam lives with his McQueen grandparents in Maine. This trip home is especially precious with Christmas coming up. But for now, it's just a quick hello and goodbye because, with a wicked ice storm on the way, Gabe's father asks a favor of Gabe. Sheriff McQueen hasn't been able to reach Lolly Helton, who's alone at her parents' former home on a mountainside outside of town where cell phones don't reach. He wants Gabe to alert her to the coming storm and bring her into town. Gabe's less than enthused at leaving Sam or to confront the stuck-up girl he used to tease in high school. But as a military policeman, Gabe is used to heeding duty's call. It's a race to get to Lolly and back before the storm hits.

Gabe's training proves invaluable in the hours ahead, for when he gets to the old Helton place, he finds Lolly being held prisoner by armed meth-heads.

Lolly wasn't so much stuck up as insecure, but she's made a good life for herself in Portland; she came back to Wilson Creek to ready her old home for sale. But now she's sure she's going to die . . .

ICE is unique in my reading experience. It's a terrific novel of suspense in which two people are pitted against a killing storm and a pair of drug-crazed murderers. At the same time, it's a warming romance between the once shy sophomore and the popular high school senior on whom she had a crush. Even though Gabe and Lolly face horrific challenges, their growing relationship is a delight. So as the plot chills the bones, the romance warms the heart. One could call ICE a book of contrasts, for parallel with the heat and cold, the points of view alternate from Gabe's and Lolly's to Darwin's and Niki's, a nasty pair if ever there was one.

Talented author Linda Howard packed a lot of story and heart in just under 200 pages. ICE is a small masterpiece that still gives me pleasure when I think about it. It richly deserves a rare Romance Reviews Today Perfect 10.

A Perfect 10: Wedding at King's Convenience by Maureen Child

WEDDING AT KING’S CONVENIENCE – Maureen Child

Kings of California, Book 6
A Perfect 10
Silhouette Desire #1978
ISBN: 978-0-373-76978-0
November 2009
Short Series Romance

Ireland – Present Day

While negotiating with Irish sheep farmer Maura Donohue over rights to use her farm for a movie location, movie mogul Jefferson King sealed the deal by bedding her. He left the next day, their fling just that, never to see each other again. But Jefferson is called to Ireland four months later when problems on the movie set arise. The formerly friendly townspeople are downright hostile to him, with comments about his not doing the “right thing.” Then, he learns to his surprise when he shows up on Maura’s doorstep to confront her, that they are referring to the fact she’s pregnant—with his child.

Maura fell for Jefferson the night they made love. After she learned of her pregnancy, she tried to contact him, but could never get past his receptionist. Angry at what she sees as his brushing her off, when he arrives back in Ireland, she is not in a forgiving mood. Plus, when he orders her to marry him for the baby’s sake, well, she doesn’t have an Irish temper for nothing. No one, not even the rich and powerful Jefferson King, is going to tell her what to do. What ensues next is a battle of wills, as Jefferson tries to figure out the best way to win over the mother of his child. Too bad he doesn’t figure out love has a big advantage…

I absolutely loved WEDDING AT KING’S CONVENIENCE. It’s not just because the setting is in Ireland on a sheep farm, but because two entertaining and charismatic characters are the stars of this tale. Maura is strong and independent, yet she melts in the arms of Jefferson. At the same time, Jefferson King, who has avoided getting involved with a woman because he’s afraid of loving someone, shows his vulnerable and masculine sides at the same time. Their chemistry sizzles right from the start in WEDDING AT KING’S CONVENIENCE and continues even as they argue and she informs him she won’t marry him. Their love is a dance of romance that readers will adore. Jefferson won’t admit that Maura meant more to him than a casual fling, while each is stubborn in holding onto their ground. I could wax poetic on WEDDING AT KING’S CONVENIENCE all day and it would never be enough. It richly deserves Romance Reviews Today’s designation of A Perfect 10. Please, pick up this book, as I guarantee you won’t be sorry.

Maureen Child has skillfully filled the pages with descriptive scenery of Ireland and its people. It makes one want to hop a plane and visit this lovely country. If we can find someone like Maura, Jefferson and the rest of the people of the village near the sheep farm, then the visit would be perfect.

With a beautiful country for a background and an equally engaging couple as the main characters, readers are in for a special treat in WEDDING AT KING’S CONVENIENCE.

Q&A with Ryshia Kennie!!!! (with giveaway)

1. Tell us about your newest release.
Picture 1072 England in a place called Hafne. Everything is dreary and
dry. But it is a land that echos with the sighs of all things magical.
Long ago a Norman’s hand destroyed Hafne’s peace and laid the way
for the Ancients’ curse that has left the land barren and taken the gift of immortality.

Now the Normans have returned. Vala is drawn to one man, a Norman, and torn between two worlds human and Ancient. With one chance to break the curse and immortality hanging in the balance, will Vala choose the love of a mortal man over the gift of immortality?

2. When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?
There wasn't an actual moment. As a child I was always penning short
stories. By the time I entered my teenage years I knew I wanted to be
a writer – I just didn’t know how to accomplish that. I do
remember when I was twelve that my English teacher praised my opening line where the character dies. Yes, even then I had a fascination with the macabre. Maybe that’s why now, except for my first book, I can’t promise that despite the fact that it’s a romance, that every character will live until the end.

3. Where do you get your information or ideas for your stories?
My ideas for my stories come out of my own interests and travels. My first book was written because of the depression era stories that seem to haunt the prairies. My second came out of a love of history and all
things medieval. And the stories that follow dabble in modern day in other countries and cultures and another love, travel.

4. What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?
I can’t write a book without a title. The title always has to come first – it breathes life into the first lines of the story and gives me a rough compass. I didn’t know that myself until my latest story that was fumbling it’s way through the opening chapters. It wasn’t until I took another look at the title that I realized why – the title was just – wrong!

And there’s the collection of good luck charms I keep by my desk.
I’m not superstitious but I’m not taking any chances either…

5. What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your books?
I learned that a love of words, a good idea and the muse does not make a book, that there’s an apprenticeship like any other trade, where skills must be learned to create an enduring story.

6. What authors or friends influenced you in helping you become a writer?
The authors I read as a teenager influenced me the most as I think the teen years are a time when you look up to people for inspiration and guidance. That said I have to say my first influence, well before my teenage years was - Lucy M. Montgomery and Jack London and then as a teenager; Stephen King, Agatha Christie, Margaret Mitchell. Those authors solidified my intent to be a writer as their stories stuck long after the last page. There's been many authors in the years since - I wish I could list them all.

7. What does your family think about your career as a published author?
With each new book they’re excited and many have dived in and rolled up their sleeves to deliver the news as far as they can.

8. Can you tell us about what’s coming up next for you writing wise?
My next books are set in Asia where romance tangles with the undercurrents of crime. The stories travel everywhere from the Borneo jungle to Beijing and the shadow of China’s lost girls - through Burma with the scrutiny of an unforgiving military junta to Cambodia and an illicit drug trade.

Guest Blogger: Disappearing Act by Laura Griffin

(UNTRACEABLE is available from Pocket Star, Nov. 24, 2009 and will be in most bookstores)

Have you ever wanted to disappear? If your home is filled with visiting relatives this holiday, maybe you can understand this impulse. But I’m not talking about just taking a few hours off, I’m talking about really disappearing--vanishing from your life and starting over somewhere.

The heroine of my latest romantic suspense novel, UNTRACEABLE, makes people disappear. Her name is Alex Lovell, and she’s made a niche business for herself helping women whose lives are in danger drop off the radar. When one of her clients goes missing for real, Alex turns to sexy, cynical homicide cop Nathan Devereaux to help uncover the truth. When he finally agrees to launch a murder investigation, their adventure--and their romance--takes a dangerous turn.

Writing UNTRACEABLE was fun--almost as fun researching Alex’s unique profession. Who knew helping people get lost would be so difficult? Turns out, it is. We leave digital tracks everywhere, so disappearing from your life and starting over someplace isn’t just about changing your appearance, but dramatically changing your lifestyle, too.

UNTRACEABLE hits bookshelves this week, and I’m celebrating by giving away autographed books and gift cards just in time for the holidays! For a chance to win a signed copy of UNTRACEABLE and a $20 gift card to Starbucks, just drop me a line at laura@lauragriffin.com. Put “Romance Reviews Today” in the subject line, and I’ll enter you in the drawing.

Happy holidays and happy reading!

Book Giveaway: Falcon's Prey by Penny Jordan

FALCON'S PREY - Penny Jordan
Part of Harlequin's Famous Firsts
This is a reissue, originally published in 1981

Blurb:

Englishwoman Felicia Gordon should be floating on air. After all, she's engaged to a man who is kind, charming, considerate…. But he doesn't inspire the least amount of passion in her blood.

It isn't until Felicia flies to Kuwait to meet her fiancé's family that she finds the electricity she's been missing—in her fiancé's uncle, Sheikh Raschid al Hamid al Sabah! Raschid is hardly the "uncle" she imagined—tall, powerful, unnervingly masculine and shockingly arrogant. But beneath Raschid's contempt lies a passion that burns hotter than the desert sun, a fire Felicia never knew she craved…until now.

Question for readers (and a chance to enter to win a copy of this book)...

Do you remember the first romance novel you read? What was the title, or if you can't recall, then what was the plot?

I'll pick a winner on Wednesday night! Good luck.
