Ask Five with....SHARON PAGE!!!

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Here's another treat for you...an interview with Sharon Page!

1. What is the title of your latest release and what’s it about?

My latest release is called Blood Rose, and it came out in early August from Kensington’s Aphrodisia line. Here’s a bit of the blurb:

Serena Lark’s erotic dreams of vampires are so vivid, so intense…could she be one? Drake Swift and Lord Sommersby, two daring vampire hunters, might know the truth about her past—and her future. The trio searches the dark streets of London for answers. She cannot say no when Sommersby and Drake introduce her to another existence entirely, one in which only extraordinary sensual pleasure matters—and Serena opens herself up to compelling desire…

I loved writing Blood Rose as it was a complex and challenging story, and I like to think it’s very erotic. It’s a menage story with a happily ever after ending. One of my heroes, Drake, is an ex-thief from London’s slums, cocky and reckless, but also emotionally scarred by his past. Jonathon is both a nobleman and a scientist, desperately hunting for a way to “cure” vampires before he loses the heroine to her destiny. When my heroine, Serena, learns of the power of a love shared between three, she must convince two powerful men, each determined to claim her for his own, to share.

2. How do you come up with ideas for your stories?

Ideas percolate for a long time, and bits and pieces of fascinating things (at least things that fascinate me!) all come together to create a full story. For example, I was reading the DaVinci Code when I started Blood Rose, and I knew I wanted to blend in a fast paced adventure with each character’s quest to understand who they really are. My heroine is a governess who was thrown out onto the street for falling in love—and I loved being able to draw from her background dealing with tempestuous children when she deals with the bad boy of the two heroes. I also loved Mary Higgins Clark’s advice to ask “What if?” I believe one of her examples was: “What if you’re alone in the house and then the toilet flushes?” I thought it was brilliant that a mundane event could be used as a springboard for terror. I also think asking “Why” generates a lot of ideas. Why do characters behave as they do?

3. What is the hardest part of writing?

The days when the words don’t want to come, when the ideas seem trite or unsophisticated, when a writer just gets down. The best thing is to keep working and keep the faith. I was working once on a proposal and watching Canada’s version of American Idol (called Canadian Idol). One of the judges advised a contestant to be honest. Don’t be cute, be real, be true to yourself. Suddenly I realized that trying to put in clever similes wasn’t going to work. What I needed was to mine deeply and capture the emotions of the characters. I also find each book gets harder. For erotic romance, sex is integral to the story so for each book it should be fresh, unique, interesting, fun, emotionally poignant…etc. It always feels like a lot to tackle. But books are created a page at a time and a word at a time. It’s important while writing to remember that.

4. How do you stay motivated?

Since writing is solitary mainly (expect for getting together with the critique group), and waits can be long—for contracts, royalties, etc., it’s easy to get worried and nervous. But I love the writing and when I’m writing and I’m in the characters’ heads, I’m having a great time. Even when it’s tough to find the right words, I’m still enjoying myself. I’ve realized that you just have to keep writing. You don’t know what will be around the corner. When a sale will come, or a terrific opportunity. When I first sold, I realized that having a file cabinet full of proposals and ideas was a good thing—I sold two additional proposals quite quickly. Also, those are the ideas that are always percolating. So time spent writing is never wasted, even if sales are a long time in coming. I do think it’s easy for artists or creators to have doubts. But it’s important, at the core, to believe in yourself.

5. What’s coming out in the near future for you?

In 2008, the last two books in my Regency erotic romance trilogy will be coming out. These are Black Silk and Hot Silk, and continue the stories of the daughters of the scandalous erotic artist Rodesson. One of the first love scenes in Black Silk is in a hot air balloon. Since I’m terrified of heights that was an exciting scene to write.
The first book in the series, Sin, was a Sept 06 Aphrodisia release. I’m proud to say that Sin won the National Readers’ Choice Award for erotic romance.

Thank you, Sharon! (and congrats!)

Spotlight Review: YOUR SAVING GRACE by J.L. Wilson

YOUR SAVING GRACE – J. L. Wilson
Cerridwen Press – http://www.cerridwenpress.com/
ISBN: 9781419909535
June 2007
Romantic Suspense

Minneapolis-St. Paul, and Savage, Minnesota – Present Day

Hannah Paxton was a witness to a murder, gave testimony, and the killer was sent to prison. Now, thirty years later, she is called for jury duty, serves as forewoman, and they find the man on trial guilty. When she begins receiving threatening notes and phone calls, Police Officer Jude Brenner remembers the cool, calm woman whom he interviewed during jury selection and goes to her home to talk to her. Jude is on light police duty due to a gunshot wound in his leg that is causing him a lot of pain.

After her abusive marriage broke up, Hannah began working at home and lives in the suburbs of Minneapolis-St. Paul in an isolated area of Savage, Minnesota. When she is attacked and left for dead in the snow, she ends up in the hospital. Jude goes to Hannah’s home to check on her cats -- unknown to him, someone is watching. This person is determined to see Hannah dead for what happened thirty years ago. Jude takes the assignment to watch over Hannah, hoping that it will bring him closer to full reinstatement of duty. He is worried that his leg isn’t healing as fast as it should, and doesn’t know what other kind of a work he can do. Jude wants to move out of snowy Minnesota and dreams about a warmer climate. The attraction grows between Hannah and Jude as the threats escalate.

Hannah is an interesting woman who is beginning to feel old as she thinks about her younger days when she attracted all the good-looking guys. Now, she worries whether Jude could find a forty-eight-year-old woman attractive. Jude is anxious to go back to active duty on the police force, but he fears that it isn’t going to happen. They are drawn to each other; Jude tries to keep his distance, but he likes Hannah and is determined to protect her. When the police finally catch the man they think is responsible and cease protection for Hannah, readers will be holding their breath, knowing there is more to the story! The secondary characters play minor roles but bring more excitement to the tale. Especially enjoyable are Hannah’s cats that make the story feel very realistic.

The story is well-paced with excellent dialogue, intriguing suspense, and an exciting ending. Of special interest are the protagonists who are a little older than in your usual romantic suspense, but sexy and still in their prime. YOUR SAVING GRACE is a tale to enjoy and savor. This reviewer will be looking for more books by this talented author.

Spotlight Review: DOMINANT TERRITORY by Cora Zane

DOMINANT TERRITORY - Cora Zane
Werekind, Book 3
Cobblestone Press - www.cobblestone-press.com
ISBN: 978-1-60088-149-7
July 2007
Erotic Paranormal Romance - Short Story

The small town of Silver and the surrounding area, Dover County - Present Day

While celebrating her newfound freedom from her cheating, lying, ex-husband Mark, Libby French and her friends decide to visit an out of the way bar called the Moonlight Run. It turns out the place is a biker bar, and the bikers are werewolves. Hmm, this might not be the best place for a group of single human women to hang out, especially when one of them, Libby, has already been picked out by a werekind named Drake Logan as a potential mate. But, on the other hand, if Libby can wrap her mind around the concept that werewolves, or at least one werewolf in particular, are way more appealing than any human males that she’s met lately, or ever, she may just celebrate this night forever.

Drake Logan nearly ditched his bike the first time he set eyes on Libby in Silver. Having her walk into his hangout seems like fate, and after one dance, he’s sure that his instincts are correct, Libby is meant to be his mate. Now he just has to convince her, fight off a potential rival, get the approval of the pack Alpha and help Libby overcome the prejudice that many humans feel against werekind. Sounds like a piece of cake, doesn’t it? ;-)

DOMINANT TERRITORY continues the Werekind storyline first begun in BONDING EXPERIENCE (August 2006). The pack in Silver is a blending of two separate packs whose members haven’t all accepted that they’re now one pack. Led by Cole and Laney Holbrook (CROSSING BORDERS, June 2006) the pack has a severe shortage of female werekind, that’s why Drake, and for that matter, most of the males in his pack would happily accept a human mate. It becomes quickly apparent that Drake and Libby are meant to be together, their chemistry is incredible and though it hits them both very quickly, love is definitely the best description for what they’ve found together. But Libby’s friends and some of the townspeople of Silver aren’t all that supportive of her relationship with Drake, and being with Drake may mean the end of relationships that are very important to Libby. Will she give up everything for Drake? You’ll have to get the book to find out.

Errol Harper, owner of Harper’s Market is one of many humans in Silver who hate werekind and anyone who associates with them. Roark Fallon is an original member of the Silver pack (some of whom believe they should have first choice of any females in Silver, including the human ones). Angie, Cheryl and Robin make up the group of friends who went with Libby to the bar that fateful night. All of these secondary characters make important contributions to DOMINANT TERRITORY.

If you’re looking for a story that combines emotion, sizzling sex and has a bit of danger for spice, head on over to Cobblestone Press and pick up your copy of DOMINANT TERRITORY today.

Ask Five with....SIDNEY CROFT!!!!

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Sidney Croft is a brand new author name for two authors who have combined their writing talents. Since they are new, I thought I'd post the bio blurb from their website at http://www.sydneycroft.com/index.php :

Sydney Croft is the alter-ego of two published authors who came together to blend their very different writing interests into adventurous tales of erotic paranormal fiction. Together, they developed a world where people with extraordinary abilities, like the power to control storms, could live and work with others like them. The series has been described as "Erotica meets the X-Men," and is unique in its own "super hero romance" niche.

The authors behind Sydney Croft live in different states and communicate almost entirely through email, though they often get together for conferences and book signings.

Now that you know a little about them, it's time to meet them!

1. What is the title of your latest release and what’s it about?

The novel is Riding The Storm, and it’s about a man who has a bizarre gift—the ability to control the weather. Unfortunately, the weather also controls him. Here’s the official back cover copy (Bantam’s cover copy rocks!)

The storm is over.

But the seduction is just beginning…

A storm’s rage. A woman’s desire. A man with the power to set them both free.

He can summon lightning at will. Emerge unscathed from the center of a tornado. Strip a woman down to her barest defenses through the sheer force of his sexuality. He’s gorgeous, dangerous and the target of parameteorolgist Haley Holmes’s latest mission. Haley has been dispatched to the Louisiana bayou to investigate the phenomenon known as Remy Begnaud – a man with a gift he never wanted: the ability to control a storm’s fury. But even a woman trained in bizarre weather phenomenon has no defense against the electrifying power of the ex-Navy SEAL…a power his enemies would kill to control.

With her agency monitoring their every move, Haley’s job is to seduce Remy, gain his trust – and help him harness his extraordinary gift. But who will protect her from this voracious lover who’s introducing her to a new world of erotic thrills – a man who grows increasingly insatiable with each new weather event? Haley knows a big storm is approaching – and with it will come unexpected delights. But, so, too, will the storm unleash her greatest fears: An enemy bent on destroying Remy. And her worst fear of all…falling in love with this magnificent man, then having to betray him…

2. Tell us a little about your daily writing life.

Larissa’s answer: I have a very non-structured writing life. It involves lots of coffee and lots of emails back and forth to Stephanie. We live states apart, so all of our co-writing is done through email and the occasional phone call. Generally, I work on one project at a time and write anywhere from 2-10 pages a day.

Steph’s answer: Ditto on the non-structure, coffee and plentiful emails. Except I need to work on more than one project for my sanity – I can generally get between 10 & 20 pages per day on various projects but somehow, the Sydney writing always goes faster because it’s a very exciting thing to build on Larissa’s scenes – there’s always an element of surprise.

3. I know Sydney Croft is two writing as one, and wonder if you ever argue over how a scene should be written?

Larissa’s answer: 99% of the time, we agree on everything. The remaining 1% usually involves rounds of discussion…but I wouldn’t say we argue. Generally, we talk our way through it. Every once in a while one of us just has to back down, because really, what it comes down to for me is that this series wouldn’t even be possible without Stephanie, so sometimes if I have to let her have her way on something, so be it. So far, I think we’ve always made the right choices in the long run.

Steph’s answer: I always tell people that I could never, ever write this series without Larissa. Never in a million years. And we’re usually very in-sync on scenes. What’s kind of cool is when we do have to figure things out, we’re so involved from our own character’s POV that that really helps. It’s not what’s best for Larissa and Steph, it’s, would Creed do this or wouldn’t Haley say this instead.

Larissa answers again: What Steph just said is very true. A lot of our choices are made for our characters and not for ourselves. People often say that they could never write with a partner because they couldn’t give up control, but I’ve never felt like I’ve given up control of anything in these books. Our choices are about what’s best for the book and the characters, not about what’s best for US.

4. Which authors have influenced you over the years, whether for their writing or for their friendship?

Larissa’s answer: My biggest writer influences have been Stephen King, Robert Jordan, Sharon Kay Penman, and Linda Howard. A strange mix, I know. But they are the writers who made me want to write from the beginning. Friends who have influenced me over the years? Alison Kent, for her incredible sexual tension, Stephanie Tyler for her amazing voice, Lydia Joyce for her unbelievable attention to detail, Lynn Viehl for her talent and capacity to endure. I have so many other amazing writer friends, and they’ll eventually all make it into my dedication pages!

Steph’s answer: My biggest writer influences, beyond Larissa, are Suzanne Brockmann, Tami Hoag and Linda Howard – love their alpha males. They’re the first authors that I read where I said, I can do this…I want to write this genre.

5. What is up next for you and your writing?

Larissa’s answer: Well, Steph and I are continually working on Sydney Croft novels…the second and third books in the Storm Series are due out in early 2008, and we were recently contracted for 3 additional Sydney books. Titles under my own name will be out in September (Snowbound,) and December (Secrets Vol. 21.) And I just finished the first book in my paranormal demon series, due out next summer from Grand Central Publishing (formerly Warner.)

Steph’s answer: Beyond the Sydney books, Sydney and Stephanie (I feel very multiple personalitied right now) are part of an anthology coming from Bantam in August 2008 – Sydney’s novella is Shadow Play, mine is Night Vision and the wonderful Eden Bradley is the 3rd author – her novella is called, The Art of Desire. I’m also finishing up a March 2008 Blaze and I’m working on book 2 of my Bantam Navy SEAL trilogy – right now it looks like all 3 books will be published very close together beginning in early 2009. So, Larissa and I are both busy and extremely happy.

Thank you ladies for a very fun and informative interview.

Be sure to check out their website at http://www.sydneycroft.com/index.php and to grab your copy of Riding the Storm, which should be appearing in bookstores anyday now.

Spotlight Review: STRIPPED by Juile Leto

For Cathie aka Caffey, who asked me the other night about Julie Leto's books.

STRIPPED – Julie Elizabeth Leto
The Bad Girls Club, Book 2
Harlequin Blaze #341
ISBN-13: 978-0-373-79345-7
ISBN-10: 0-373-79345-6
August 2007
Contemporary Series Romance w/Paranormal Elements

Chicago, Illinois ~ Present Day

Lilith St. Lyon let herself get carried away in a brief affair with Chicago Detective Mac Mancusi. Lilith is a witch and can read minds. Well, she used her powers unethically to control their sex life, but Mac found out and dumped her. Lilith’s sister, Regina, is the Guardian of Witches and stripped Lilith of all her powers. However, now Mac is after Lilith for her help on a case. But what help can a witch be without her powers?

Mac is still reeling from the knowledge that Lilith reads minds and she used them to manipulate him in bed. However, he has a criminal they’re interrogating and hopes Lilith can read the bad guy’s mind. Unfortunately, she doesn’t have the power anymore but that doesn’t stop her from trying to help Mac on the case. As Lilith and Mac get deeper and deeper into the investigation, the sexual pull rises once again between them. Will they be able to stop the bad guys? And will Lilith get her powers back?

STRIPPED is a captivating tale from the first page, blending a Harlequin Blaze with a paranormal twist. Lilith is really a witch, but don’t expect a vanilla type witch in the mold of Samantha Stephens from the Bewitched television show. Lilith was bad in using her powers to get what she wanted, namely Mac, and didn’t expect the council to come down so hard on her. With Mac wanting her help, she feels helpless without her powers, but she will do whatever it takes to be a part of his life again. Mac, for his part, doesn’t truly understand what Lilith is, but there is something about her that he cannot resist. Mix in some hot sex scenes with suspense -- Mac and Lilith try to prevent a huge drug shipment from arriving in Chicago -- and readers are in for an edge of your seat read.

Even though STRIPPED is part of the Bad Girls Club series, this book is a standalone as there is only one scene which connects the three stories to each other. Minor characters include Mac’s fellow cop Rick Fernandez and Lilith’s best friend Josie Vargas. These two get involved as a couple in STRIPPED as part of a secondary plot. Readers will also get a brief glimpse of Lilith’s sister Regina, who has her own story out in September called WITCHY BUSINESS. Can’t wait to grab my copy of that!

Mix a little witchcraft with some scorching love scenes and you get a very enchanting tale that’s sure to end up on your keeper shelf. Grab your copy of STRIPPED.

August 2007
Erotic Contemporary Romance

Vancouver - Present Day

Samair Jones isn't having a good day. Truth be told, it actually hasn't been a great life to date. Ever since she conformed to the future her parents wanted instead of the one she desired, Samair resigned herself to mediocrity -- average job, pedestrian boyfriend, vanilla sex. But no more. After quitting her job and walking in on her boyfriend having sex with her roommate, Samair has decided to take life by the horns, and the first step is to reconnect with her old friend Joey, a dancer at club Risque.

When the delicious blonde exuding sex appeal walks into his club, Valentine Ward is riveted. Who knew that someone so innocently dressed could also be so provocative without even trying. When he meets the lovely Samair for the first time, Val accepts her proposition of helping her explore her fantasies without question. Sex with no strings? Just what he is looking for.

Samair is happy to have found a man who she can have fun with and explore her wild side without worry of things getting sticky. She's decided to go after her dream and start her own clothing line and wants no distractions, which is just fine with Val whose got his own fish to fry. But what happens when the sex unexpectedly turns into something more?

TROUBLE is Samair's nickname, the name of her clothing line, and what she gets up to when she hooks up with Valentine Ward. Samair has played the good girl most of her life, but has decided it's not who she is. Meeting Val, who makes no bones about being a bad boy, brings out the sex kitten Samair always knew was there but was afraid to let loose. In the midst of their sexcapades, Samair blossoms into the woman she wants to be and Val works to overcome his trust issues with women. Watching their relationship develop is as heartwarming as it is sizzling.

Although the story is told mainly from Samair's point of view, readers get glimpses into Val's thoughts as well as Samair's friend Joey's. Ms. White has penned a story that is unabashedly erotic, but is also well-rounded with a good plot and interesting characters who make it enjoyable through and through.

Most people I've met have read at least one Secrets book and they're still as hot as ever. Amber Green is one of the authors and I've met her off and on in chats. She's a very nice lady and I'm thrilled to have her as the interview subject.

Plus, she is giving away to one winner their choice of either Secrets Volume 13 or 20 or a download of her upcoming Loose Id ebook Lights Out!

Meanwhile, sit back and meet....Amber Green!

1 . What is the title of your latest release and what’s it about?

The Subject, a novella in Secrets 20: Surrender to Passion.

Tyler, cheerfully single and the hottest game designer in North America, has everything she wants. When it's all snatched away, she must learn to depend on someone else. She chooses Esau (don't-call-me-werewolf) Kirkland, despite her well-founded suspicions. Esau has buried his entire existence in his duty to his pack. When his duty requires him to track down Tyler and deliver her to her enemies, he plots a counter scheme to bring her home as his Captured Bride, exploiting the strongest traditions of his heritage to save her life at the cost of her freedom. But Tyler, master gamer, reserves the right to turn the tables on everyone. When all forces gather for the showdown, Esau must give up everything he thought he had, and become more than he ever thought he could be.

2. Which comes first, the characters or the story?

Usually, neither. Either can change, and change the other, as the writing progresses.

I normally start with a scene, or part of one, from a scrap of a dream that sticks with me or comes back to me. This seed-scene is normally first person, intensely emotional, and so deeply internal that it could take place on a space station, a ranch, or a medieval castle with only minor alterations. Sometimes that seed-scene is pretty clearly from somebody else's book, but with a twist. Then I have to get a second scene (or partial scene) from a POV that complements the first one. Putting these together gives me an idea of how part of my story will work out, showing a couple of events and how they affect the protags (and how the protags shape the events). Those events suggest a premise, a skeleton of a story arc, and a couple more scenes. But not nearly the whole story.

Once I have that much, I can put the scenes in a setting and work out what kind of people would act/react in that way in that situation. Certain settings (say WWII) suggest certain personal histories (a childhood in the Depression) which suggest an array of characteristics. Where characteristics established in the seed scene conflict with the array suggested by the setting and the personal history, I have to figure out what gave rise to each of those characteristics. What kind of people the protags are will affect what happens, how they shape their world and are shaped by their world. Also, some mind-sets are entirely incompatible with some settings. Getting the characters firmed up can necessitate scrapping the setting and starting over. Since I'm a pantser more than a plotter, each scene is written separately and fitted in, like a color chip in a parquet floor, and most of them are pried out, reshaped or re-colored, and put back several times to get the right effect. (This is not at all efficient, but not living by my pen I don’t have to be efficient.)

On the other hand, each story seems to have at least one waitaminnit! moment: I suddenly realize -- or someone in my crit group points out -- that this character is too goal-oriented (or reckless, or hard-nosed practical) to plan/act/react that way. But the plot requires it. I'll spend a while trying to tweak the plot, and if I can't make that work I have to change the character. And changing the character essentially changes the plot; this character acts, reacts, and engenders reactions based on her new personality instead of the discarded one.

3. How do you stay motivated?

Money helps. Feedback from readers gives an immense boost. I also keep framed poster-sized prints of my covers in my office at the day job.

4. Which authors or friends have influenced you over the years, whether for their writing or for their friendship?
I could spend the rest of my life making this list. Everything I've ever read has influenced me, one way or another. If I'm not writing, I'm probably reading. That's what I do. MaryJanice Davidson wrote about a guy, trapped in an elevator with the heroine, who could save himself but instead saves the heroine by violently shoving her out of the elevator. Morgan Hawke also wrote about a guy thrusting the heroine out of an elevator, saving her while dooming himself. The stories are very different, but in each, the push altered the guy's status from villainous to heroic. I wrote a parallel scene for Lights Out!, but I couldn’t make it fit and had to discard it. I still have the image...eventually, I'll use it.

Everyone I talk to affects me as well. The premise for the current work in progress, Bareback, came from what Gordie Dickson told me the night he found out someone close to him had been shot, and that was more than 25 years ago. While I was writing The Subject, Tyler Blackwood gave crucial feedback at every turn. When my heroine had to be renamed, Tyler even let me steal her name. Then my editor, Alicia Rasley, explained why some emotionally overwhelming elements (like Esau's son dying in the earthquake) had to be scaled back. Members of my primary crit group, Romance Writers Unlimited, kept me typing when I really had other things to spend my time on. All in all, I've been extraordinarily lucky in the people who have reached out to me and helped me along.

5. What’s coming up in the near future for you?

Right now I'm nose-deep in Bareback, my first attempt at a contemporary or at a m/m. In this one, contrary to my usual pattern, the protags' personalities crystallized in the seed-scenes--Brian in the doorway taking charge of his own life, Joe turning away in the Dark Moment. Points like which of them is human have changed repeatedly, but the premise and the characters remain the same. I hope to send it to my Loose-Id editor, Judith David, before Labor Day.

Thanks, Amber! You can learn more about Amber by visiting her website here.

Post away to enter the contest. Ask Amber any questions or make comments. I will draw the one lucky winner on Sunday evening around Midnight Eastern time...so....post away.

Contemporary Romance with Paranormal Touches

Port Gamble, Washington – The Present

Lila Abbott works in Market Foods. Today she is handing out samples of Cheez Whiz on Ritz Crackers. Unfortunately, Emily Ruth Griffin drops dead a few feet from Lila after eating one of the crackers. The produce manager gives Emily Ruth CPR, but to no avail. By happenstance, Lucas Griffin, Emily Ruth’s ex, shows up at the store shortly after Emily has been wheeled out. He saw her Jag in the parking lot and came in to see if she was going to their scheduled meeting with a lawyer. Lucas is very vocal about his ex-witch. Emily Ruth had left her Pomeranian, Schatzie, in the Jag. The dog is barking its head off in the parking lot, and Police Chief Bob Boniford asks Lila to rescue Schatzie. At the end of the day, she ends up with the dog.

Police Chief Boniford believed Emily Ruth died of natural causes even as young as she was. He didn’t protect the scene, or for that matter take much interest in the case other than taking statements. Lila secured Emily Ruth’s shopping cart, wheeling it into a refrigerated unit. She found a list that makes her suspect Emily Ruth was shopping for a dinner date. Later it turns out Emily Ruth had a severe peanut allergy, often reacting within thirty seconds of ingesting anything with a trace of peanuts. When Emily Ruth starts haunting Market Foods each Monday at 10:36, the day and time she died, Lila, who is Port Gamble’s acknowledged ghost whisperer, tries to help Emily Ruth’s ghost finish whatever business is keeping her from heaven -- or in this case, maybe hell.

Port Gamble is a resort town and local girl Emily Ruth scored big when she married one of the summer boys who vacation in the huge beachfront mansions. Lucas divorced her after he found her in bed with his brother, Jason, but not before she ran through his trust fund. Now Jason is dead, and a judge gave bloodsucking Emily Ruth lifetime possession of the beach house, which has been in the Griffin family for over a hundred years. Motive for murder? While Lucas was in Iraq reporting on the war, Emily Ruth turned Lucas’s family against him and claimed she was pregnant, which is why his family didn’t contest the settlement. Lucas doesn't care that she is dead; she deserved it, but he claims he didn’t kill her. Then the police chief decides he was conspiring with Lila and they both come under suspicion.

Those are the important characters in this offbeat murder mystery romance, but there is a refreshing assortment of secondary characters adding humor and depth to the story. Lila and Lucas’s unlikely romance bounces down a potholed road of experience, preconceptions, and the dilemmas of their present situation. After all, a summer boy left Lila pregnant at sixteen and never looked back, and Lucas's experience with local girl Emily Ruth has already been mentioned. What’s great about THE FOREVER SUMMER is that the mix works. The characters are intriguing. The murder mystery is fascinating. Emily Ruth’s post-death appearances are both scary and funny. Lila and Lucas are just right for each other and, while their bodies speak to each other, they remain blind to the fact. Add the witty dialogue, both spoken and thought, and author Suzanne Macpherson has written a wonderful story that deserves a Perfect 10.

Spotlight Review: Charming Carmen by Madison Layle and Anna Leigh Keaton

CHARMING CARMEN - Madison Layle and Anna Leigh Keaton
Incognito, Book 6
Cobblestone Press - www.cobblestone-press.com
ISBN: 978-1-60088-124-4
Erotic Contemporary Romance - Light BDSM
Rating: Erotic

Club Incognito; Florida - Present Day

After a terrible incident at work, Carmen Fernandez packs up and heads to Florida to start over. She visits with her friend, Olivia Montgomery, and ends up going to Club Incognito for a fundraiser for a women's shelter. Once inside, Carmen is intensely attracted to Slave Carl. From his naked chest all the way to his gorgeous tight butt, Carmen wouldn't mind a piece of that. Too bad he's Mistress Katriona's own personal slave. A bright spot in Carmen's evening comes when a weekend with Carl is auctioned off. She wants that date and bids in the hopes of winning. Carmen wins and when her weekend begins Carmen is more than ready for anything Carl gives her. However, is she truly ready for what Carl wants to give her?

No one knows that Carl Thompson, personal slave to Mistress Katriona, is a fake. At least as her personal slave. In actuality, Carl and Katriona are friends and the personal slave business is only for show at the club. Carl's real job is that of bookkeeper for the club. Tonight his Mistress Kat is claimed by Master Dalton and Carl wishes for something like that. And he just might have found it when the Montgomery's enter with a guest...Carmen Fernandez. For most of the night Carl watches her from the shadows and is fascinated with her. When it's Carl's turn on the auction block, he begs Katriona to let Carmen win him even though she's not a member and is ineligible. Carl can't wait for his time with Carmen and when she arrives, he's ready. Only he's not ready to give up total control to a woman. In the club it's all for show, but here in his own private abode, can he, or should I say will he, submit to Carmen?

Each new book in the Incognito series is as captivating, if not more than the last. I've been anxiously waiting and praying that Ms. Layle & Ms. Keaton would give Carl his own story. They did, and it's worth the wait. Carl is a protector and a very good lover, at least from Carmen's perspective he is. He pampers Carmen giving her anything she desires, including sex with him, which by the way, was not part of the package. Carmen isn't too trusting of men, especially after her ex-lover framed her for stealing from the company, and she packs up and leaves without a backward glance. It wouldn't have done any good for her to stay and fight, because he'd covered all the bases. She's ready for a new start and exploring the Dom/sub lifestyle seems like the place to begin. Always fascinated with the aspects, Carmen soon learns that she's a Domm and after having Carl as her personal slave for a couple of days, she's ready for more. Too bad Carl can't be hers. Their relationship moves along quickly but not so fast that it seems unrealistic. The sex is teasing, wicked, and torrid. Secondary characters include Kat and Dalton (see COLLARING KAT) and Olivia, Dylan, and Ryan Montgomery (see SEDUCING OLIVIA).

Seduction is what readers will discover when they open up Madison Layle & Anna Leigh Keaton's latest, CHARMING CARMEN.

A Perfect 10: THE BRACELET by Karen Rose Smith

THE BRACELET - Karen Rose Smith
A Perfect 10
Harlequin's Everlasting Love #14
ISBN: 978-0-373-65416-1
August 2007
Contemporary Women's Fiction, Series

York Pennsylvania, Now and in Days Past

THE BRACELET is a powerful story of love and family. Its heroine and hero, Laura and Brady Malone, met in April of 1969. Laura had chanced upon a peace demonstration and joined in on impulse; then her eyes locked with those of a bystander and she felt an immediate connection. Brady saw that the demonstration was about to erupt into violence, so he made his way through the crowd to rescue the girl who had attracted him so suddenly. Now, the tie between Laura and Brady may be slightly frayed, but the two have always loved each other.

The two main points of view in THE BRACELET belong to Laura and Brady. Their memories of the good and bad times are laid bare: Brady's time in Viet Nam that changed him so; their marriage and Laura's miscarriages; the loss of their infant son; the adoption of Sean and Kat; and the building of Brady's successful robotics firm that took up so much of his time.

But what about the present? Two crises that affect the whole Malone family bring things to a head, crises that could mean the end of them as a family...or a new beginning. Eighteen year-old Sean's problems with his father and with life in general also play an important and moving part in THE BRACELET.

Karen Rose Smith is the author of many sweet and passionate series romances, but this extraordinary book may just prove a breakout for her. It contains everything found in a major single title novel. THE BRACELET takes Laura and Brady through almost forty years of ups and downs. Some of the experiences they face are heartbreakingly real, but so are their strengths and their love. So well written is THE BRACELET that I never felt I was being told a story; I felt part of the family and experienced all the fears and joys of its members. For that reason, and for the lesson in hope it provides for us all, I'm awarding THE BRACELET one of RRT's rare Perfect 10s.

Ask Five with....JANET MULLANY!!!

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Today we have Janet Mullany as our guest! She has a book out this month and also writes as Jane Lockwood. Definitely a multi-faceted writer!

Get to know...Janet Mullany:

What is the title of your latest release and what’s it about?

My book is The Rules of Gentility (Avon A) and I define it as a Regency chicklit. It’s about a husband-hunting fashionista heiress in Regency London. I started writing it as a joke and for my own comic relief, --a sort of Regency Bridget Jones’s Diary--after I’d finished a doom, gloom Regency-set (as yet unpublished). I also let rip with my own brand of humor and that was a lot of fun. It’s an affectionate spoof of Regency-sets but at the same time I think it’s the most romantic thing I’ve ever written. My editor, though, swears it isn’t a romance, which I find rather confusing, as I thought with this one I’d cracked the romance code.

What is the hardest part of writing?

Just doing it. Finding excuses to get off the Internet and stop Googling yourself and re-reading e-mail and all the other zillion wonderful distractions there are out there. And I’m a particularly terrible plotter.

How do you stay motivated?

I find that once I stop making excuses and start writing my subconscious kicks in and I get into what I call “the zone,” where everything flows and surprising things happen. That, for me, is the reward. I have to keep that feeling in mind. Of course, sometimes it’s just drudgery, squeezing out words and wishing I were doing something else.

Which authors have influenced you over the years, whether for their writing or for their friendship?

My favorite books, which I re-read fairly regularly, are Wives and Daughters by Mrs. Gaskell, Emma by Jane Austen, Villette by Charlotte Bronte, and Daniel Deronda by George Eliot. I like Nick Hornby, Sarah Waters, Pam Rosenthal, Colleen Gleason, Anna Maxted, Jude Morgan, Terry Pratchett, Jennifer Weiner, and Angela Carter (in no particular order). I have a lot of great online writing friends, in particular the Bad Girls Critique Group and the Wet Noodle Posse, http://www.wetnoodleposse.com.

Looking in your crystal ball, tell us what’s coming up in the near future for you.

I have an erotic historical romance, Forbidden Shores (Signet Eclipse) coming out in October under the name of Jane Lockwood, You can find out more at http://janelockwood.com/. And I’m working on a new idea for Avon that is in the deep thought stage and also some erotic romance novellas underway.

Thanks for having me visit!

Thanks, Janet! You can learn more about Janet by visiting her website at http://www.janetmullany.com/

And if you have any questions for her, be sure and post them and she just might pop in to answer them!

Historical Romance

England - 1818

Eve Dearing lost her mother, Antonia, in a suspicious accident when she was twelve. The last words her mother spoke to her have stayed with Eve ever since, and she has vowed to discover the real cause of Antonia's death. Moving in with her aunt after her father's remarriage, Eve has devoted her life to writing novels about brave heroines. Each year, she and her aunt attend a women writers' symposium. The women in Eve's family have all possessed some form of "charisma," or ability to either see or feel things that have happened or will happen. At the symposium, Eve is stunned when she is overwhelmed with feelings of intense hatred by one person there, although she has no idea who it is.

After years of fighting the French, Ash Denison prefers a life of peace and quiet. But a friend has asked him to attend a writer's symposium to try to discover which author has been sending short stories to the newspaper -- stories that have shaken some members of the ton in the revelations not so nicely hinted at in each tale. When Ash reads one of the articles and recognizes the story of the death of his own brother, he is determined to discover the mysterious writer. At the authors' meeting, Ash is immediately drawn to Eve Dearing, a.k.a. the author Mrs. Barrymore, and wonders if she is the secretive "Angelo" who has been sending the stories to the paper?

Eve's first impression of Ash is that he is rude as he stares through his quizzing glass at her. His sardonic behavior upon being introduced does nothing to change her mind about him. Ash, on the other hand, sees through her dowdy appearance to the lovely young woman she is, although she seems a bit snippy towards him. After the affair, the small group of writers gather at Lady Sayer's home, but one night one of them is stabbed. Ash and Eve both think that because the woman who was injured had hinted at being "Angelo," that someone is trying to prevent her from publishing anymore revealing stories. Eve's premonitions and the similar feelings she experienced at the symposium have her determined to discover the truth behind the stabbing and to prevent any further danger. And she comes to the realization that she doesn't mind at all that Ash is by her side during the search. Has the debonair Ash melted Eve's coolness toward him?

Ms. Thornton ends her Trap series (THE MARRIAGE TRAP and THE BACHELOR TRAP) with another spectacular trip to Regency England and yet another excellent mystery which had me puzzled to the very end. The finish is exciting and surprising, and the story line is a real page turner. Eve and Ash are delightfully romantic, witty, and intelligent. The sparks that fly between them and their determination to solve the mysteries of the deaths of their loved ones makes for great reading. The other authors, the waif, Nell, and Eve's aunt are well-rounded secondary characters who make the story real and even more emotional. And I could hardly fail to mention Eve's devoted Labrador Retriever, Dexter, who plays an important role in the book.

Beautifully written and filled with exciting scenes and memorable characters, THE PLEASURE TRAP is a not-to-be-missed summer sizzler.

Truly, Idaho ~ Present Day

Two lives shaped by a murder years ago come together…

True crime writer Maddie Dupree arrives in Truly looking to probe into the double murder-suicide that involved a prominent married couple, Loch and Rose Hennessy, and a waitress, Alice Jones. Maddie has heard about the sexy appeal of the Hennessy men and meeting Mick Hennessy, she can see why. Mick is irresistible, but lets everyone know he isn’t looking for commitment. Maddie, for her part, can’t let an affair with Mick sidestep her investigation. Besides, there’s a little piece of information she hasn’t yet told Mick -- Maddie’s mother was the waitress Mick’s mother killed.

Mick grew up under the shadow of the murder-suicide scandal. Whatever drove his mother to murder his father and the waitress and then kill herself is anyone’s guess. He runs two of the town bars and keeps fairly busy. A little fling now and then provides for any needed sexual relief, and when he spies Maddie in his bar, he can tell right off that he doesn’t want to get involved with this smart mouthed, sexy lady. She’s trouble with a capital “T.” However, when Maddie starts asking too many questions about the past, he knows he’s going to have to deal with her. Well, what his brain tells him to do and what another part wants, that’s another thing. Like a train wreck waiting to happen, you know it’s all going to boil over when Mick learns the truth about Maddie.

What a fun read TANGLED UP IN YOU is! Maddie has grown from being a motherless little girl into a top selling author. The death of her mother has always haunted her, and she sees writing a book about it as a way to deal with the past. She’s well aware that she can’t get too close to the Hennessy family (Mick has a sister and nephew living in Truly also) but Mick is tempting. The confrontations Mick has with Maddie after he learns about the book she’s writing sizzles with high energy and sexual chemistry. Maddie, meanwhile, settles into Truly in a house she bought and gets to know the citizens up close and maybe a little too personal.

Besides the blistering chemistry between Mick and Maddie, other characters provide a bit of comic relief, even if unintentional. Like ninety-year old Harriet telling Maddie about the certain attributes of Hennessy men. The neighbors know what’s going on in small town Truly and aren’t afraid to stick their nose in. Mick also has to deal with his sister, Meg, who still has her own issues over the murder-suicide. There are even some very laughable and cute scenes involving a stray cat that will have cat lovers nodding their head. Ah, yes, TANGLED UP IN YOU is as witty as it’s enjoyable.

Halfway through reading TANGLED UP IN YOU, I came to realize that I was reading a story that, in my mind, had to be a Romance Reviews Today’s Perfect 10. The question would be whether it would continue to be as fantastic all the way to the end. Well, I wasn’t disappointed at all, and TANGLED UP IN YOU solidly deserves its stellar rating. It’s definitely going to be one of my best reads of 2007.

I highly recommend that you put TANGLED UP IN YOU at the top of your book shopping list.

Ask Five with....Susan Grant!!!!!!

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Wow, Susan Grant has some sexy Extraterrestrials! If you haven't read her "ET" books, then what are you waiting for? Crazy Mo calls Susan's latest book "awesome!" I know it's on my tbb list!

Sit back and get to know...Susan Grant!

1. What is the title of your latest release and what’s it about?

It’s called How to Lose an Extraterrestrial in 10 Days. It’s the third book in the light-hearted Otherworldly Men series concerning a California political family (think: the Kennedys) and the alien invasion they must thwart. “ET,” however, takes a more serious turn due to some of the subject matter. Reef, the newly dismantled bio-engineered assassin from book 1 and 2 must finish his rehabilitation as a normal human in the home of a suburban single mom and her two children. I feel it stands alone well because I wrote it to be that way.

A cool fact about this book: In the beginning of writing the series, I never dreamed Reef would be a hero. Hell, I didn’t even think he’d survive the first book! Not only was he a career killer, he wasn’t 100% human. He was as cold and heartless as the hardware installed inside his body. It wasn’t until he was settling in for a long night in a vacant warehouse that I saw what he’d been hiding: My ruthless, extraterrestrial killer was in fact lost and alone--and had every reason to feel that way. From then on, the guy fascinated me. Knowing what I now did about his background, I was determined to give him the happy ending he deserved. And the heroine he deserved. I loved writing this book. Fans of my Star series of books will find a lot to enjoy about this one, I think!

2. How do you come up with ideas for your stories?

My life! I live an adventure-filled, often surreal life, and bits and pieces of what I experience and who I meet inspire countless ideas and make their way into every book even as I am writing them.

3. What is the hardest part of writing?

Probably the day to day grind of writing on a deadline.

4. What’s the most interesting thing about you that very few people know?

Assuming most people know I fly 747s for United, and most know I was one of the first female graduates of the US Air Force Academy, I’ll throw this one out there: I spent a few summers working in a prison camp! Okay, it was a simulated prison camp but pretty darn authentic! I acted in the role of an enemy interrogator and prison guard for USAF survival, resistance, and escape school. It was fun playing one of the bad guys, speaking in an accent, wearing a foreign uniform.

5. What’s coming up in the near future for you?

I am incredibly excited about my next book. It’s called Moonstruck: A Tale of the Borderlands. It’s a darker, more complex series spin-off of the Otherworldly Men series, and kicks off the Borderlands books, what I hope will be an ongoing SFR series. Moonstruck takes place almost entirely on a spaceship after the Drakken surrender and concerns the difficulties in combining the former enemies (as well as Earth) in a cohesive force. They have to learn to work together, and it makes for some great conflict! I pair a female admiral, who I loved writing, paired with a Hordish second-in-command and former pirate, and a mixed crew of Drakken, Coalition, and Earthlings. It’s steamy as hell, too.

I’ve already got a quote: “Susan Grant exceeds expectations with MOONSTRUCK! Grant delivers a riveting plot, compelling characters and a heart wrenching love story in this action-packed science fiction romance that centers around an unlikely peace treaty and a clash of cultures. Admiral Brit Bandar is an outstanding heroine who buries her traumatic past under devotion to her career—and her hatred of the Drakken Horde. Warleader Finnar Rorkken is an incredible hero, a street-fighter who straddles the line between his brutal Hordish heritage and his innately ethical core. This is a can’t-put-down read that draws you in from the first page and doesn’t let go until the tension-filled final chapters. MOONSTRUCK is terrific. I highly recommend it.” ~Linnea Sinclair, RITA award winning author of GAMES OF COMMAND and THE DOWN HOME ZOMBIE BLUES

And here’s the back cover copy as I know it:

PEACE IS FOR LITTLE GIRLS.

And Coalition starship admiral Brit Bandar is one tough woman. A mere intergalactic treaty could never get her to trust the Drakken Horde. There was too much bad blood between the Coalition and the Horde and, for intensely personal reasons, Brit wasn’t sure that she was through spilling it! But now a peaceful accord has made Finn Rorkken, a notorious Drakken rogue, second-in command on her starship – and through some grand cosmic irony – front and center in her thoughts…and her heart.

WARLEADER. PIRATE.

Either title sat easily on Finn’s battle-hardened shoulders. Though second-in-command to “Stone-Heart” Bandar? That would take some getting used to. Peace required as much sacrifice as war, so he’d comply even if his reaction to the gorgeous admiral fell decidedly outside protocol. But would he end up kissing or killing her if the galaxy’s tentative truce turned into all out war?

Can I say again how excited I am for this one to come out? It’s due on the shelves end of May 2008.

Also due out in 2008 (It’s a really busy year for me) is Mysteria II (Berkley), a non-paranormal military suspense for Silhouette Suspense. Also, another full-length novel for HQN, a second Borderlands book!

Thanks, Susan!
