Read the RRT review --> Servant: The Awakening.

[RRT Blog] Tell us about Servant: The Awakening.

[Lori Foster] SERVANT is the first of my books focusing more on the horror/urban fantasy element than on the romance. There is a romance, but it’s not as prominent as my Lori Foster books. In the first SERVANT book, The Awakening, I introduce the lead characters of Gaby and Luther. Gaby has a special gift – to see beyond the surface of normal people, to their demonic souls. Luther is a detective who is both drawn to Gaby, but suspicious of her.

[RRT Blog] Is this going to be a series and if so, how many books will there be?

[Lori Foster] It’s a series, and so far I’m planning on about 5 books. But if you’re familiar with my style, you know that could change. I write by the seat of my pants and sometimes (many times) things happen that I don’t expect.

Like new characters. New twists. New stories.

[RRT Blog]What made you decide to branch out into Urban Fantasy?

[Lori Foster] I’ve always wanted to write horror-type books, but I wanted to put my own stamp on them. That is, I wanted to do them my way, not any traditional way. My editor told me that SERVANT is more like romantic horror, but there are urban fantasy undertones too, so... I just hope readers like it!

[RRT Blog] With the release of Servant, does this mean you're cutting back on your steamy contemporaries?

[Lori Foster] Cutting back on ALL writing has been the plan for awhile. Right now, I’m hoping to do a romance, a horror/urban fantasy, and a novella each year. Other projects might come up, but I really want to give myself more down time.

[RRT Blog]What's coming up next for both Lori Foster and L.L. Foster?

[Lori Foster] The next Lori Foster single title will be Hard to Handle, a continuation of my SBC fighter series, out in Feb 08. But there are some novellas and reissues out along the way, too.

I’m currently working on the next L.L.Foster book, and that should be out in January 09. (That date *just* got changed from Dec 08)

Thanks, Lori!

Hi Lori,

I absolutely love your brand of contemporary novels. You got me hooked and craving for more. I never knew that you had branched out into Urban Fantasy.

How do you go about inventing a character? Do you discuss many characters with your family or friends?

Best of luck in everything you do.

Mahaira said...

After creating lots of characters and books, has there been any character/situation/dialogue that has stuck with you? What do you do when this sort of thing happens?

Hi Lori,
Servant sounds like an appealing read. I was wondering if you helped with the cover design? It has one of those faces that get stuck in our head.
Hugs, Danette

Hi Kim! Thanks. I'll be sticking with romance for sure. And you know, maybe after I get a backlist of urban fantasy/horror, I'd like to try children's books. :-D We'll see!

Mahaira, hello! Thanks for dropping by.
I'm not entirely sure HOW I create characters, but nope, I don't discuss them much with my family. We've always go so much going on in the Foster household that my writing is only a very small part of it. ;-)
My husband usually knows what I'm working on, as in "another fighter book," the next in "the scary series." That kind of thing. But we do get indepth with the characterization.
I guess characters just sort of show up for me. Suddenly they're there in my brain, and little by little, their story comes to me, and then I write it. LOL
I've never figured out how it all works, but luckily, it does!

Hi Danette!
Publishers have a whole department of people who work on and design the covers. I'm lucky enough that I get cover approval, and every so often I make a request for a change. But mostly I trust them to do what they do.
My only issue with Gaby's portrayal on the cover was her boobs. She's stacked, and in my book, she's sooooo NOT! LOL
But hey, my boys liked the cover and they read more of that kind of thing than I do, and they reminded me how chesty Laura Croft is, so... I trust readers to figure it out on their own. ;-)

Mahaira - I'm not sure what you're asking. Do you mean, were there characters who were unforgettable? Or do you mean situations where I got stuck and couldn't write? Sorry. Maybe I need more coffee this morning. LOL

Lori, success to you with this new series.

Will Gaby be featured in all 5 books you have planned, or will each successive book feature a different H/h?

At some point will Morty be more hero like? I mean for some reason I feel that he has great potential for being a bigger help to Gaby than he has already. Am I even close?

Anonymous said...

Geez I guess I feel closer to Mort than I thought...gave him the nick name Morty...LMBO

Lori Foster said...

Hi Pam. This series is all about Gaby. When I finish with it, I'll create new people and start over again!

LOL. Leann, I'm glad you like Mort/Morty -I think I called him both in the book, so no problem. I liked him too. He grew on me. At this point, I'm not sure what will happen with him. You know how I write - I just make it up as I go along. ;-)

Your interview was interesting and informative. Love that striking cover. Did you ever realize how multi-talented a writer you were. Ilook forward to your series. Congrats on this new release.

Your fighter series is about Extreme Fighting, isn't it? Are you a fan and that's how you came up with the idea or was it another way?

Am interested in this new concept that you created. How unique and special. What brought on this inspiration for the new series. ALl the best and much success.

Hi Lori, I am a fan of reading your books, which is how I first got into reading more romance novels.

What started you to write in Urban Fantasy?

Congrats on your new release!

anne said...

This new series sounds appealing and intriguing. I am certainly going to be reading this new book. How does your imagination have the ability to write such diverse books. Best wishes on the series.

Lori Foster said...

Ruth, bless you! Multi-talented? Moi? I'm blushing. Thank you so much!

Hi Maureen! Oh boy, am I ever a fan! I'm a HUGE fan of the UFC and Pride. I'll be going to my second live competition on the 20th. Can't wait. It's just incredible. My absolute favorite sport ever!

Diane, do you mean the urban fantasy/horror series? You know, I have no idea where this stuff comes from. It's just sort of in my head. And because of that, I have to write it to get it semi-out of my head. LOL. I've always been a big fan of horror movies, so that's probably where the kernel of it all began. :-)

acdaisy and Anne, I really don't know the answers to those questions. Writing for me is just a part of me, like how I talk and what I like to wear. It's just me. I can't say how or why it's there, or how I know to use it.
I've never really analyzed it much - probably because I'm always too busy writing. LOL
I love what I do, and I love the fact that I got established enough in romance that I could try something new. It's exciting!
Some day I'd also like to try straight horror - like the really gruesome stuff, and maybe kids' books too, for pre-schoolers.

I have a million ideas of things I want to do. I'm mega-lucky that I've already gotten to do some of them!

hey girlie. Hope you are staying warm. Big change from Monday huh???

I can't wait to start Servant though it scares me some. LOL

Lori Foster said...

Hey Judy! How ya doing? Yeah, it's one heck of a temp change! Geez Louise! But I've been in all day, so it hasn't bothered me much.
Sure is pretty, even if it's chilly!

Hi Lori!

If you had to hook someone into buying your new book with just three sentences, what would you say to make them want to buy it?

Lori Foster said...

Oh geez, Rachel! That's really, really tough. I don't handsell my books, and never have. It's too humbling. LOL.
If someone ASKED, I think I'd tell them that if they're familiar with my romances, they'll like the hero in this series, that the chemistry and dialogue is similar, and that so far I've been told the pacing is fast, so it goes quickly. LOL
I don't know if that's helpful or not, but it's the best I can come up with!

That's good Lori! Thanks!

Love the new L.L website, and Servant definitely has me intrigued. Is the horror storyline suspense scary or blood and guts scary?
